Funeral services for Joe Garza, IV infant son of Joe Garza III and Michelle Spring Garza are pending with the Wharton Funeral Home. He died on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 in a Wharton Hospital following a sudden illness.

Karl A. Long

Funeral services for Karl A. Long, are scheduled for today, Saturday, February 14 at 11 a.m. in Macedonia Baptist Church, 1019 Spanish Camp Rd., Wharton. Interment will follow.
He died February 8, 2004. A wake was held Friday evening at Southwest Chapel in Stafford.

Charlie Svoboda

Funeral services for Charlie Frank Svoboda, age 95 of Hungerford, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 15 at St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry C. Rachunek celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Interment will follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 14, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 4 until 9 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Svoboda died Thursday, February 12, 2004 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. He was born on October 14, 1908 in Smithville, the son of Frank Svoboda and Mary Barina Svoboda.
Charlie married Agnes Sisak on June 5, 1930 in Cistern. She preceded him in death on September 14, 1995. He moved his family to Wharton County in 1937 where he farmed row crops and raised cattle until he retired in 1979. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Othelie and Ray Viktorin of Hungerford; son and daughter-in-law, John and Sue Svoboda of Angleton; sister, Kathy Pesl of Smithville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Adolph and Elsie Svoboda and Louis and Evelyn Svoboda, all of Smithville; sister-in-law, Millie Svoboda of New Braunfels; grandchildren and spouses, Ray Viktorin, Jr. and wife, Sharon of El Campo, Pat Cervenka and husband, Dennis of Wharton, Sandra Smith and husband, Ricky of Sugar Land, Larry Viktorin and wife, Dee Ann of Wharton, Susan Johnson and husband, Jimmy of Victoria, Sharon Shaver and husband, Charlie of Ridgefield, CT, Sam Svoboda and wife, Kim, Suzanne Thibodeaux and husband, Tim, and Sara Dahl and husband, Jeff, all of Angleton, and Stephen Svoboda and wife, Donna of Georgetown; 22 great-grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Barina Svoboda; wife, Agnes Sisek Svoboda; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank Svoboda, Joe and Matilda Svoboda and Willie and Annie Svoboda; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and George Zapalac and brother-in-law, Cyril Pesl.

Pallbearers will be Ray Viktorin, Larry Viktorin, Dennis Cervenka, Ricky Smith, Jimmy Johnson, Sam Svoboda, Stephen Svoboda, Tim Thibodeaux and Jeff Dahl.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448 or a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Erlinda Trevino

Funeral services for Erlinda Trevino, age 50 of Pledger, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 16 at the Wharton Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 15 at the Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation from 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday, February 15, at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Leroy Kurtz

Leroy B. Kurtz, age 88, of Wharton, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on May 16, 1915, in Fayetteville, the son of the late Frank and Julia Startz Kurtz.

Mr. Kurtz married Gladys Victoria Brandt on Dec. 24, 1941, in Wharton. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Kurtz lived in Houston for 41 years and worked as a machinist and superintendent for Hahn & Clay for 39 years prior to retiring in 1982 and moving to Wharton. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. “Leory was taken from us while working too hard putting in his spring garden.” His family was his life and he loved to tend his garden, fruit trees, cows and his most favorite fishing location in Matagorda, “Leroy’s Cut.”

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2004, in the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery. Friends may call for visitation from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2004, and the family will be receiving friends from 5 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Kurtz of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Lee Campbell and husband, Dennis of Houston and Marie Vincent and husband, Rick of Friendswood; son and daughter-in-law, Frank Allen Kurtz and wife, Becky of Pearland; brother, Warren Lloyd Kurtz of Wharton; grandchildren and spouses, Donna and Billy Lott, Kim Campbell, Josh and Amy Graves, Julia Vincent, Andy Smith and Amy Kurtz and great-grandchildren, Brian Lott, Ashley Lott, Karsen Graves and Carli Graves. He was preceded in death by brothers, Willie Kurtz, Henry Kurtz, Charlie Kurtz, Theo Kurtz and Arthur Kurtz; sisters, Toni Callahan and Ida Hosea and grandsons, Aaron Frank Kurtz and Jeffrey Lee Graves.

Pallbearers will be Roy Kurtz, Sonny Kurtz, James Turner, Robert Newlin, Bert Lee Hosea and Ray Kacer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Blair, Bill Hudgins, Jerry Campbell and Marcus Melnar.

Anita Northington

Anita Williamson Northington, age 83, of Egypt, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, in Wharton. She was born on Dec. 14, 1920, in Nashville, Tenn., the daughter of William and Anita Nunn Williamson.
Mrs. Northington spent her first six years of life on Green Hill farm in Tennessee, which was land granted to her great-great grandfather, John W. Williamson, for service in the Revolutionary War. She attended grade school in Old Hickory, Tenn., and graduated from Ward Belmont High School. She earned a B.A. degree and master’s degree from Vanderbilt University. She married George Heard Northington III on April 3, 1943. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1982. They moved to Egypt in 1946 and she had lived there ever since. Mrs. Northington taught school for 25 years in Wharton County, starting in the "two room schoolhouse" in Bonus in 1957 and later teaching in Hungerford, Wharton and East Bernard prior to retiring in 1982.She served as a board member of the Wharton County Texas Historical Commission and the Wharton County Museum.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson and Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Interment followed in the Northington Family Cemetery in Egypt.

Survivors include sons, George H. “Bud” Northington IV and John Williamson Northington, both of Egypt; brother-in-law, Dr. Harold Northington of Wharton; grandchildren, George H. “Baron” Northington V and Paula Northington Reed, both of Egypt, and great-granddaughter, Bailey Rene Northington.

Pallbearers were George H. “Baron” Northington, V, Tom Northington, Mac Northington, Guy Northington, Don Al Middlebrook, Harold Mortensen, Robert S. Mortensen, Russ Matthys and Mike Mortensen.

Honorary pallbearers were all of the members of the Wharton County Texas Historical Commission, Wharton County Museum, her bridge club, Don Middlebrook, Paula Reed, Melody Peacock, Val Voulgaris, Clinton White, Merle Hudgins, Dr. John Wynn, Dr. Harold Northington, Kay Franke Holmes, Rochelle B. Simpson, Joe Tom Davis, and William A.Cline.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Egypt Plantation Museum, P.O. Box 219, Egypt, TX 77436; to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488; or First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1292, Wharton, TX 77488.

James Quinn

James David Quinn, age 69, of Wharton, died Wednesday April 21, 2004, in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Dec. 5, 1934, in Kerens, the son of the late Alton B. Quinn and Johnnie Kate Quinn.

Mr. Quinn was a graduate of West Columbia High School and he received his master of music degree from Sam Houston State University. He served in the U. S. Army. Mr. Quinn moved to Wharton in 1961 and was employed by the Wharton Independent School District for 15 years as a Government and History teacher and Choir Director. He later received his real estate brokers license and founded Quinn Properties in Wharton. For the past 6 years he has been associated with Schneider/Quinn in Houston as an appraiser. Mr. Quinn was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wharton where he served as church choir director for many years. He was a member of the Wharton Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and being with his many friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 am., today, Saturday April 24, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow at 2 pm Saturday in the Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery in West Columbia.

Survivors include his daughter, Beth Toon and husband, Tim of Walla Walla, Wash.; sons, Paul David Quinn and wife, Terri of Wharton and Michael David Quinn of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Christopher Quinn, Chad Quinn, Collin Quinn, Kevin Toon and Parker Toon. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Renfro.

Pallbearers are Charles Chambers, Doug Moses, Walter Joe Mangum, John Schneider, Bubba Miller, Bob Creamer and Neil Reynolds.

Honorary pallbearers are Jack Waters, Donnie Witwiski and David Brewer.

Elizabeth Thompson

A memorial mass for Elizabeth C. “Betty” Thompson, 86, of Philadelphia, Pa., was held Tuesday, in St. John of the Cross Church in Roslyn, Pa. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, Pa.

Mrs. Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa., died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Doylestown Hospital. She was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Harry S. Carolan and Mary Elizabeth Hesson.

She was the wife of the late George L. Thompson. Mrs. Thompson was a resident of Wharton for 17 years before moving to Philadelphia in l995. She was a retired Bell Telephone operator and member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and John Malizia of Chalfont, Pa.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Thompson of Roslyn, Pa.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Thomas of Vineland, N.J.; brother and sister-in-law, James and Lillian Carolan of Wharton; and sister Ann M. Laurich of Warminster, Pa. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Edris Toney

Edris Marie Cook Toney, age 79, of Wharton, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in Wharton following a sudden illness. She was born on March 31, 1925, in Bartlett, the daughter of the late Herman Edward Cook and Katy Lee Goss Cook.

Mrs. Toney married L.A. Toney on Oct. 22, 1949. He preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1986. She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and worked for 41 years as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. Mrs. Toney was a member of Abell Street Church of Christ, where she also had worked in the church office. She loved spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Gene Polvado officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Glenda Toney of Magnolia; daughters and son-in-law, Carol and John Hobbins of Wharton and Donna Fawcett of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Kenneth Toney, April Kindred, Wesley Toney, Jason Fawcett, Scott Hobbins and Holly Hobbins and great-grandchildren, Derrick Toney, Joshua Toney, Jaimee Toney, Blake Kindred, Paige Toney and Tyler Kindred. She was prceded in death by her brother, Edward Glen Cook, and sisters, Nola Stone, Lorene Lowe and Katy Kemp.

Pallbearers are Kenneth Toney, Wesley Toney, Jason Fawcett, Scott Hobbins, Brian Kindred and Travis Garza.

Honorary pallbearer is Derrick Toney.

Kevin Taylor

Graveside services for Kevin Dale Taylor, 26, of Gilmer, were held Sunday at Willow Oak Cemetery in Gilmer.

Mr. Taylor died July 6, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Tyler. He was born Feb. 13, 1978, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to James and Suzanne Hardeman Taylor.

He worked at Jason Deli in Longview.

Survivors include parents, James and Suzanne Taylor; grandparents, Dale and Betty Hardeman, George Taylor and Barbara Scott; sister, Karrie Taylor of Gilmer; aunt, Sally Hardeman, formerly of Hungerford; nephews, Sebastian Taylor and Seth Osborne.

Funeral services were under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.

John Brooks

John E. Brooks, 69, of Brazoria passed away Sept. 5, 2004. Born in West Columbia on Jan. 19, 1935, he was a graduate of Sweeny High School. Mr. Brooks attended the University of Houston where in addition to his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he achieved his doctorate of education. He was an educator for more than 30 years and retired from Wharton County Junior College as vice-president of adult and continuing education.

Mr. Brooks was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brazoria. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Brazoria Masonic Lodge No. 327 A.F & A.M. and Brazoria Eastern Star Chapter No. 874 D.E.S. Mr. Brooks is greatly loved and fondly remembered by many as a husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Doy Brooks of Brazoria; son, John Brooks, and fiancé Kelly Hughes, of Seabrook; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Terry McCoy of Georgetown; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Vivian Brooks of Sweeny; sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy and Ed Duke of Brazoria and Eddie Faye Caldwell of Brazoria; grandchildren, Jason M. Brooks, Jessica M. Brooks, Justin M. Brooks, Hannah R. McCoy, Claire McCoy, Shelby R. Hughes and Ryan P. Hughes.

Mr. Brooks was a kind, generous, loving and intelligent man with a great sense of humor and a tremendous faith in God. He will be sorely missed by all.

Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Brazoria at 4 p.m. with Brother Jim Doyle officiating. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery in Sweeny.

Otis Brooks

Funeral services for Otis H. Brooks, 73, of Egypt, will be held Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. C. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Brooks died Sept. 6, 2004, at his residence. He was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Egypt to David and Raddie Tanner Brooks Sr.

Survivors include wife, Ellen Edwars Brooks of Egypt; sons, Otis Brooks Jr. and Davy Brooks, both of Egypt; daughters, Genfore Moore of Richmond, Carol Aldridge of Kendleton, Joyce Jackson of Wharton, Kayland Jones of El Campo and Theis Autry of Needville; brother. A.C. Brooks of Egypt; sister, Reva Hurd of Los Angeles, Calif.

Robert Carson

Funeral services for Robert Carson, 73, of Sugar Land, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Knesek and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Johnston officiating. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum in East Bernard.

Mr. Carson died Aug. 30, 2004, in Houston. He was born in Houston to Richard and Minnie Johnson Carson.

He married Nelva Sliva on June 9, 1956, in Wallis. Mr. Carson worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a district engineer.

Survivors include wife, Nelva Carson; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and James Winkel; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary Carson Jr. and Clint and Kelly Carson; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and sister, Jane Boulden. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Carson III.

Pazatie Frazier

Funeral services for Pazatie Frazier, 88, of Wharton will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Prairie Grove Baptist Church with Rev. T. Baines officiating. Burial will follow in Boones Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-9 p.m. Friends may call after I p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Frazier died Sept. 4, 2004, in Houston. She was born Oct. 12, 1915, in Wharton to Moses and Pazatie Warren White.

Survivors include sons, Robert Frazier of Dallas and Lora James Frazier of Wharton; daughter, Dorthea Hatton of Houston; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
