William Dreher
Funeral services for William Hiram “Jack” Dreher, 79, of Bay City will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. military honors provided by P.H. Parker VFW Post No. 2438 of Bay City.
Mr. Dreher passed away Oct. 20, 2002. He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Rockdale to Jerome J. Dreher and Myrtle Rozell Dreher.
He was a lifelong resident of Bay City, he was a renowned and avid fisherman, a retired paint contractor, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shriner’s and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Flossie Gentry Dreher of Bay City; daughter, Denise Gentry Phillips of Houston; son, Robert W. Gentry of Houston; sisters, Vera H. Robinson of Houston, Estelle Muston, Jeraldine J. Hosek, Peggy L. Hosek, Marilin Orsak and Johnnie Sue Roberts, all of Rockdale; and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Florine Hawkins
Funeral services for Florine Hawkins, 76, of Hungerford, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Seven Star Baptist Church with Dr. R.I. Campbell III officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-9 p.m. at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Hawkins died Oct. 17, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1926, in Wiergate to Alvin and Mahilda Brooks Dean.
Survivors include brother, Jessie Dean of Liberty; sisters, Telson Warren of Liberty, Betty Jo Joiner of Shankleville and Bobbie Harris of Houston.
George Krenek
George P. Krenek Jr., 79, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in a Wharton nursing home after a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 12, 1922 in Hungerford, to the late George and Annie Ondrias Krenek.
He was a self-employed farmer and rancher until he retired in 1981. Mr. Krenek entered into the security business graduating from the Texas Armed Guard Professional Security Training Academy.
He was president of K&K Security for five years. He worked for MI Drilling Fluids for 13 years for different companies, clients and employees. Mr. Krenek retired from MI in 1994.
He was a graduate of Wharton High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. Mr. Krenek was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper in Okinawa, the Philippines, and was among the first troops to land in Japan in 1945. He served as president for the Wharton County Farm & Ranch Improvement Council and served as chairman for the Egypt Community ASCS Board. Mr. Krenek also served on the St. John’s Catholic Church Parish Council for a number of years and was also a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Hungerford School District. He was also a former reporter from Hungerford for the Hallettsville Tribune in 1939-1940 and for the Wharton-Journal Spectator and the Eagle Lake Headlight in the mid 80s.
Mr. Krenek was a member of American Legion Post No. 87 and VFW Post No. 4474, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years. He was a life member in the 11th Airborne Division Association and the Lone Star Chapter of the 11th Airborne Division. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford.
Mr. Krenek married Vlasta Zahn on May 17, 1951, and she preceded him in death in 1987. He was also preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Martha Murray, Georgia Henderson, Sister M. Martina and Anne Obenhaus; and brothers Pete and Paul Krenek.
He is survived by daughter, Mary Lou Krenek of Sugar Land; daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Richard Koch of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Phyllis Krenek of Egypt, Gerard and Theresa Krenek of Wharton and Mark and Pam Krenek of Wharton; grandchildren, Jonathan, Valerie, Travis, Kimberly, Amanda, Hannah, and Colleen Krenek and Amber and Matt Koch. He is also survived by special friend Helen Bena, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home and after 6 p.m., at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford.
A rosary was recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford.
Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford.
Pallbearers included his grandson Jonathan Krenek and nephews Douglas Krenek, Phillip Krenek, Dennis Krenek, Edward Krenek, Thomas Murray, Richard Zahn and Thomas Zahn.
Honorary pallbearers include Travis Krenek, Richard Koch, Francis Krenek, Frank Konvicka, Edmond Boatwright, James Blair, Lawrence Hiles, Ludy Zahn, David Zahn, Louis Palinek, Gordon Peikert, Allen Peikert, “Cat” Mata, John O’Dowd, Kevin O’Dowd, Verlie Sherrill, Herb McCown, Gene Monroe, Dr. John Fink, Bobby Jones, Larseen Thompson, Anthony Armstrong, nephews and all members of the Co. E 188th 11th Airborne Division.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Scholarship Fund in memory of George Krenek, the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
Julia Campos
Funeral services for Julia Perez Campos, 80, of Wharton, were held Thursday at New Faith Church with Rev. M.E. Matthews officiating. Burial followed in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.
Mrs. Campos died Dec. 17, 2002, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born May 21, 1922, in Cuero to Nicholas Perez and Odelia Cruz.
She had been a resident of Wharton for 46 years. Mrs. Campos was a housekeeper and Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Sanchez Campos and all of her brothers and sisters.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Bill Torres of Houston, Christina and Ron Riggs of Lake Jackson, Carman Limas of Wharton, Juanita Gutierrez of Wharton, Lupe and Ben Campos of Wharton, Delia and Michael Panchero of Houston and Esther and Clayton Coats of Wharton; son, Joseph Anthony Campos Sr. of Wharton: 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Claudia Watson
Claudia V. Watson, 84, of Bay City died Dec. 19, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton. She was born Sept. 2, 1918, in El Campo, to the late Jesse J. and Lois Lola Billings Terrell. Mrs. Watson was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, in which she was actively involved for many years, and was a resident of Bay City since 1962.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Karl B. McLeod of Iago and Wanda Kay and Owen W. “Bill” Parker of Palacios; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Rufus Edward Watson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Interment follows at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.
Pallbearers are her grandsons Wesley D., Darrel E. and Jay B. Hearn, Jeffrey K. Blackmore, James P. “Pat” Conroy Jr. and Michael L. Parker.

Annias Davis
Funeral services for Annias Davis, 87, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Union Baptist Church with Rev. E. Bon officiating. Burial will follow in Union Baptist Cemetery.
Mrs. Davis died Feb. 4, 2003, at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Pledger to Edgar Batties and India Spradley.
She was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and worked as a nurse’s aide. Mrs. Davis was Baptist by faith.
Survivors includes son and daughter-in-law, Clarence and Mary Batties.

Sam Gonzales
Following cremation, memorial services for Sam Gilbert Gonzales, 67, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.
Mr. Gonzales died Feb. 6, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home after an extended illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Corpus Christi, the son of the late Francisco and Juanita Munjuia Gonzales.
He married Isidra Castillo on April 8, 1965, in Wharton. He was a longtime resident of Wharton and member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Survivors include wife, Isidra Gonzales of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Jose Muniz of Wharton; sons and daughter-in-law, Richard Gonzales of Lake Jackson, Andrew Gonzales of Wharton, Vincent and Beth Gonzales of Lake Jackson, Frank Gonzales of Wharton and Johnny Gonzales of Wharton; sisters, Alicia of Austin, Estella Rosa of Hockley, Theodora and Rosa, both of Houston; brother, Ray Carrales of Houston; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bentana.
Elizabeth Longoria
Funeral services for Elizabeth Longoria, 15, of Eagle Lake, were held Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Rev. Lawrence Matula officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nada. Rosary services were held Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Elizabeth died Feb. 3, 2003, at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston after an extended battle with Leukemia.
She was a homebound student who participated in the Special Olympics from 1995 to 2000. She was a lifelong resident of Eagle Lake and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include parents, Pete and Carmel Longoria of Eagle Lake; sister, Connie Longoria of Eagle Lake; grandmothers, Aurelia Leal of Crescent and Flora Longoria of Bonus; a niece and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mrs. Phoenix died Feb. 5, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1928, in Columbus to Jimmy Banks and Essie Lee Woods Banks.

Funeral services for Mary Prazak Viktorin, 93, of East Bernard, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. A wake service was held Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Mrs. Viktorin died Feb. 5, 2003, at Czech Catholic Home in Hillje.
She was a homemaker, member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, KJZT and charter member of St. Bernadette Court No. 1108 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Mrs. Viktorin was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Otillie Prazak; husband, Henry Viktorin Sr.; son, Henry Viktorin Jr.; grandson, Jeffrey Viktorin; sisters, Annie Macha, Tillie Dusek, Frances Viaclovsky, Agnes Muras and Angeline Prazak; brothers, John Prazak, Blaze Prazak, Frank Prazak, Albert Prazak, Sylvester Prazak and Vencil Prazak.

Mr. Wilson died Feb. 5, 2003, at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was born Jan. 2, 1965, in Wharton, to John and Geneva Byrd Wilson Sr.

Vera Butcher
Vera L. Butcher, devoted sister, wife, mother and grandmother passed away Wednesday morning, April 16, 2003, at The Hampton in Pearland. Born Aug. 6, 1915 to Charles and Louise Moulliet in Ponchatoula, La., she was preceded in death by her parents, brother Victor, and her beloved husband of 56 years, Dr. Percy C. Butcher Jr.
Mrs. Butcher was a graduate of St. Mary of the Pines in Chatawa, Miss., a longtime volunteer in various Little League and Catholic organizations including St. Joseph’s Women’s Center and charter member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Mother of Unity. A member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church since 1975, she and Dr. Butcher were previously 21-year members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Houston.
She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Moulliet of Metarie, La.; brother, Charles Moulliet of Ponchatoula, La.; sisters-in-law Doris Moulliet of Ponchatoula, La.; Florine Jones of Beaumont; and Mary Butcher of Houston; sons, Dr., Percy C. Butcher and wife Patsy of Houston, Chuck Butcher and wife Linda of Boling and Paul Butcher and Janet Jones, Houston; and daughter, Anne Regier and husband Gary of Pearland. She will be missed by her grandchildren Scott Butcher and wife Dr. Monica Lee of San Antonio, David Butcher of Austin, Leslie Butcher of Houston, Chris Butcher of Houston, Elaine Butcher of Rosenberg, Dustin Regier and Brent Regier, both of Pearland, and Ryan O’Connell of San Antonio. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Jacob Lee Butcher of San Antonio.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 19, at Earthman Funeral Home on the Gulf Freeway from noon until 2 p.m. with a rosary at 2 p.m. Funeral mass will be Monday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church followed by interment at Forest Park Cemetery, Lawndale.
