Pauline Powers
Funeral services for Pauline Maxine Tyson Powers, 86, of Edna and formerly of Wharton, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna.
Mrs. Powers died Feb. 20, 2006, in Edna. She was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Wichita Falls.
She married Charles Roy Davis in 1942 and moved to Louise where they reared their two children. In 1972 she married Ira W. Powers, an apartment contractor of Houston. They made their home in Rosenberg. She moved to Edna in 1999 to be close to her children and grandchildren. The last four years she has been a resident at Southbrooke Nursing Home.
Mrs. Powers is preceded in death by an infant daughter; her husband, Ira W. Powers; a brother and a sister.
Survivors include son, W.A. “Billy” Davis and his wife Carol of Edna; daughter, Doris D. Farquhar of Edna; four grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Johnny Shorter
Funeral services for Johnny Lee Shorter, 56, of Bonus, were held Saturday at Sand Ridge Baptist Church in Egypt with Rev. A.C. Gardner and Rev. Coby Shorter Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Sand Ridge Cemetery.
Mr. Shorter died Feb. 15, 2006. He was born July 29, 1949, to Dolly and Dan Shorter Sr. in Wharton County.
He joined Sand Ridge Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member there. Mr. Shorter was ordained a deacon in 1979 and also served as church treasurer. He attended Bonus Elementary School and graduated from Hungerford High School in 1967. Mr. Shorter was employed by Imperial Sugar for 24 years.
Mr. Shorter was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ernest Lee Shorter.
Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnathan and Bobbie Shorter, Dan and Pat Shorter Jr. and Sherman and Regina Shorter; sisters and brother-in-law, Evada Shaw and Savannah and Alex Gardner; and a number of nieces and nephews, one great-nephew, aunts, uncles and other relatives.
Brandi Ward
Brandi Nicole Ward was born Dec. 30, 1980, in Wharton. After a courageous battle with a brain tumor, Miss Ward entered Heaven on Feb. 17, 2006.
She was reared in East Bernard and attended East Bernard Independent School District, where she participated in athletics, UIL, 4-H and band. Miss Ward was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Graduating from Texas A&M University in 2003, she began her teaching career in Bryan and spent the last two years teaching kindergarten at East Bernard Elementary. Her love of teaching is evident in the many young lives she has touched and her legacy will live in the children that she loved so dearly.
She is survived by her mother, Marguerite Ward, and her sister, Jamie Ward, both of East Bernard. She is also survived by her grandparents, Jim and Patricia Caraway of East Bernard; aunts and uncles, Kenny and Dinah Ward of Wallis, Rudy and Bonnie Hibbeler of Jewett, Augie and D.J. Sommers of Wallis, Donna and Jay Newsom of Marble Falls, Robbin and Roberta Ward of Snook; great-aunt, Twyla Kellogg of Victoria; cousins, Rose Caraway, Dink and Amanda Weeks, Nathan Ward, Jason and Monica Ward, Britney Hibbeler, Sierra and Savannah Sommers, Macy Ward, Wendy Tankersley, Quinton Quiros, Suzy Hickerson, Jayda Ward, Caitlin Ward and Aaron Ward-Weeks. Miss Ward is also survived by special friends, Sheree Beal, Holly Wagner, Sabrina Duffy, Lorie Hicks, Amy Viertel, Emilie Naiser, Rachel Bosworth, Shae Stelzel, Sandra and Brannon Dusek, Danny and Cindy Gertson, Mike and Mickie Farrell, Roland and Shirley Orsak, Mark and Rita Jochec, and many, many other good friends.
Miss Ward was welcomed into Heaven by her Daddy, Ronald Dale Ward. Others there to greet her were John B. and Penny Ward, and her great-grandparents Elmer and Rita Stone.
Pallbearers were Chris Young, Dustin Guthman, Jarrod Beal, Tanner Stade, Nathan Ward, Jamie Reber, Daniel Gertson and Christopher Gertson.
Honorary pallbearers were Miss Ward’s students and little friends from school, and her “adopted” children, Catie, Colin and Quinn Dusek.
A scholarship fund has been set up in Brandi’s memory at Amegy Bank, East Bernard, TX 77435. The family has asked that any memorials be made to the Brandi Ward Memorial Scholarship.
Francis Britton
Funeral services for Francis Pauline Britton, 66, of Wharton, were held Monday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Lynn officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Britton died Feb. 10, 2006, in a Bay City nursing home after a lengthy illness. She was born on Aug. 20, 1939, in Brawt, Fla., the daughter of the late Fletcher Cooper and Lizzie Gilchrist Cooper.
She had been a resident of Wharton for the past 45 years and was a member of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker all her life. Francis married Norbert E. Britton on Dec. 17, 1955, in Eagle Lake. Besides her parents, Mrs. Britton was also preceded in death by her husband on July 10, 1991, and two sisters.
Survivors include her children, Mary Shanks and husband, Don Mack Shanks, of Wharton, Carl Britton and wife, Roweena, of Wharton and Earl Britton and wife, Tracy, of Linden, Tenn.; sisters, Daphine Smith, Betty Ann Fernandez and Lucille Cooper all of Florida; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Marion Flynn
Marion Williams Flynn passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, in Tomball. She was born in Glen Flora on July 28, 1920, to Clarence and Myrtle Williams.
Mrs. Flynn was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Flynn, Jr., her sister, Louise Griffin, and her brother, Robert Williams.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Elizabeth Flynn Adams and Anthony of Nassau Bay, Patrick Flynn and Kathryn of Sherman and Sarah Flynn Hancock and Charles of Spring. Also surviving her are a sister, Eleanor Henderson of Kerrville; sister-in-law Lannie Williams McMillan of Wharton; and brother-in-law, Henry Griffin of Dallas.
Her true pride and joy were her grandchildren, Paul Hancock and spouse, Kimberly, Jeffrey Hancock, Chris Adams, Bryan Flynn, Kevin Flynn and great granddaughter, Emily Louise Hancock.
Marion attended Texas State College for Women in Denton and received a Bachelor of Science degree, later earning a Master of Science Degree from Lamar University. She taught in the Port Arthur Independent School District for 27 years as a first grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School.
Her hobby was playing bridge with her dear friends, and she was particularly proud of earning the Life Master’s Award in duplicate bridge.
While living in Port Arthur she was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church which later became First United Methodist Church.
The funeral service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Chapel of Resurrection Mausoleum in Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Byron Jarratt officiating.

Rosalva Garza
Funeral services for Rosalva Martinez Garza, 66, of Bay City, will be held 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Pena officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Garza died Feb. 13, 2006, in Bay City. She was born on May 20, 1939, in Newgulf, daughter of the late John Manuel Martinez and Herminia Sandoval Martinez.
She was a homemaker and a member of Agape House Ministries in Bay City. Mrs. Garza was a 20-year resident of Bay City and a former resident of Freeport.
Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Castillo and husband, Rudy, of Bay City; son, David Garza of Houston; sisters, Rosalinda Mireles and Delia Luera, both of Bay City, and Olga Blanco of Corpus Christi; brothers, Oscar Martinez of Ashwood and Lalo Martinez of Boling; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Elva Pena and Herminia Garza; and brother, Ernest Martinez.
David Mazel
David John Mazel, age 58, of Wharton, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at El Campo Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on May 23, 1947, in Wharton, the son of the late Sylvester Joe Mazel and Matilda Emily Kostka Mazel.
Mr. Mazel was a longtime resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He was a former resident of Breckenridge. He was a 1965 graduate of Wharton High School and later attended and graduated from Tarleton State University with a degree in business administration. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict having served in the U. S. Army. Mr. Mazel was the owner of the Wharton Farm and Ranch Store in Wharton. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton.
A Rosary was recited Sunday evening, Feb. 12, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.
Graveside services followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.
Survivors include his very best friend, Linda Bijarro of Wharton; daughters, Sandra E. Morris of Azel, and Sarah Mazel of Breckenridge; son and daughter-in-law, Will and Amanda Mazel of Cisco; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Donald Rejsek of Rosenberg; grandchildren, Lane and Luke Morris, Reece and Emily Jo Ann Mazel; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a niece and nephew.
Pallbearers were Charles Mazel, James Mazel, Dennis Mazel, John Evans, Jim Evans and Charles Grant.
Honorary pallbearers were all the members of the American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton.
Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
Thelma King
Memorial services for Thelma King, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Lance Ousley officiating.
Mrs. King died March 8, 2006.
She and her husband, Capt. James W. King, lived various places as he was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. Wharton became their home in 1982.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, James King, and brother, Henry Everheart of Dallas.
Survivors include her son, Larry King and wife Pandy, of Wharton; four grandsons, Larry Don King of Wharton, Michael King of Austin, Michael Taylor and wife Nicki of Austin and Kent Taylor and Denise Jolly of Basalt, Colo., and three great-grandchildren, Trey Brandon King, Matthew Michael Taylor and Ayden Lynn King.

Virginia Cloud
Virginia Jeane Cloud, age 64, of Boling died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in Ben Taub hospital following an extended illness.
She was born on July 29, 1941, in Richmond, the daughter of the late Julius James Gresham and Dorothy Marie Grigar.
Mrs. Cloud was a lifelong resident of Boling and Wharton County and was Baptist by faith. She graduated from Boling High School in 1959 and attended business school in Houston for two years. Jeane married Troy Cloud on June 19, 1971, in Boling.
Mrs. Cloud worked as a special education teachers aide for Boling Independent School District at New Gulf Elementary School for 28 years until her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed fishing, baking, cooking, making crafts by hand, listening to Bobby Jones music and attending the Kolache Klobase Festival. Mrs. Cloud had a favorite saying, “Life is too short to not do what makes you happy.” She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Lester Lee Gresham.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at First Baptist Church of Boling with the Rev. Skip Holman officiating. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
Survivors include her husband Troy Cloud Sr. of Boling; sons, Troy Cloud Jr. of Boling and David Green and wife Lisa of El Campo; daughter, Dorothy Green of Houston; and brother, Jay Sam Gresham and wife Debbie of Canyon Lake; and her precious grandchildren, Taylor and Casey Green.

Albert Dusak
Albert Alvin Dusak, age 78, of Wharton died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born on Sept. 8, 1927. near East Bernard, the son of the late Jakup Dusak and Angeline Jurecek Dusak.
Mr. Dusak was a lifelong resident of Wharton and Wharton County and was Catholic by faith.
He married Mildred Bernice Marling on Aug. 1, 1949, in Wallis and she preceded him in death on June 29, 1996.
Mr. Dusak worked as a truck driver for Wharton Hydro Gas until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four brothers.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.
Survivors include his daughters, Debra Goad of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Linda Bowen of Cresthill, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Ashley Dusak of Wharton; sisters, Bert Engelhardt of East Bernard, Sophie Hajdik of Rosenberg and Lucy Prazak of Houston; grandchildren, Heather Koudela, Joshua Bowen, David Goad and Lorri Dyer; great-grandchildren, Dustie and Justin Koudela, Conner and Brooke Dyer, Cheyanne, Morgan and Kaylie Goad.
