Richard Johnson

Richard Philup “Bear” Johnson Jr., 57, of Wharton died Sept. 1, 2005, in a Wharton hospital after an extended illness.

Following cremation, memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Ernest Waddell

Funeral services for Ernest Waddell, 77, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Miller-Gordon Cemetery.

Mr. Waddell died Sept. 1, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Wharton to Johnny and Lola Ray Waddell.

Survivors include daughter, Alee Tolden of Lane City; brother, Griffie Waddell of Kendleton; sister, Theresa Farris of Wharton; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Gail Dickson

Gail Dickson, age 91, of Memphis, Tenn., and a former longtime resident of Wharton, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at the Bright Glade Convalescent Center in Memphis following an extended illness. She was born on Aug. 28, 1914, in San Antonio, the daughter of the late Joe Bravenec and Irene Gullett Bravenec. She was a Texan at heart having lived there for 88 of her 91 years.

Mrs. Dickson was a longtime resident of Wharton and moved to Memphis in December of 2002. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton. She married Thomas Edwards Dickson on June 23, 1935, in Lake Charles, La., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 2002.
Mrs. Dickson was also preceded in death by her son, Tom Dickson. She was a dear, sweet mother, grandmother, wife and friend. Mrs. Dickson was a volunteer with the Caney Valley Hospital Auxiliary in Wharton for many years. She also devoted much of her time to First United Methodist Church in Wharton, helping on various projects including organizing a group of ladies to make needlepoint kneelers. Mrs. Dickson was a Girl Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Mother and many other things that great mothers are.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Kay and Randy McCloy of Memphis; two grandsons, William Vernon Uhlhorn II and Thomas Dickson McKellar McCloy; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Dickson of Houston.

Pallbearers were Harold Northington, Charles Chambers, Johnny Allen, Charles Dickson, Jesse Dickson, Richard Arnold and Louis Priesler.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Jerry Marek

Jerry Henry Marek Jr., resident of Wharton, formerly of the Pierce Community, passed away on Sept. 1, 2005, at the age of 79. He was born on Aug. 6, 1926, in Pierce to the late Jerry H. and Lurlene Werlla Marek. He was a farmer and a retired operator for Transco.

He is survived by his wife Ornlise Berberich Marek; three sons, Thomas Edward Marek of El Campo and wife Veronica, Terence Duane Marek of Wharton and wife Susan and Travis Lynn Marek of Wharton and wife Tina; and one daughter, Debra Gay Marek Wheeler of Austin and husband Roy; 11 grandchildren, Christian Joseph Von Drehle, Kelly Virginia Von Drehle, Cody Austin Von Drehle, Ann Marie Marek, Philip Michael Marek, Joshua Jay Marek, Didi Lynn Marek, Jenna Paige Wheeler, Courtney Michelle Wheeler, Jay Allen Marek and Sara Marie Marek.

He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Gloris Ella Janssen Marek; and sister Maebelle Barr.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Visitation will begin today, Saturday, at noon at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be on Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton with Pastor Laura Olson officiating.

Graveside services will be at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at Oaklawn Memorial Park in El Campo. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to: St. Paul Lutheran Church, 225 NE Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Alfred Mattheaus
Alfred R. Mattheaus, age 90, of Wharton, went to be with his Lord Wednesday morning Aug. 31, 2005. He was born on Aug. 31, 1915, in Alfred, the son of the late Frederick Mattheaus and Julia Anna Wornat Mattheaus.

Mr. Mattheaus had been a resident of Wharton since 2004 and was a former resident of Needville, Beasley, Webster, Dickinson and Boling.

He worked as a farmer from 1930 until 1946 and for a short time worked as a butcher at the Rosenberg Meat Market.
Then in 1946 he went to work for Union Carbide and worked as an operator in the polyethylene section until his retirement in 1978.

He married Veronica Bialas on Oct. 23, 1935, in Beasley. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton and enjoyed raising cattle and farming.
Besides his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter, LaVern Fay George; two brothers, August and Theodore Mattheaus; two sisters, Selma Ohl and Elsie Sydow; and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Laura Olson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica Mattheaus of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Kay and Wayne Popp of Wharton; son, Kenneth Dale Mattheaus of Boling; sisters, Lenora Wilson of Florida, Julie Deshazo and Hilda Morris, both of Rosenberg; grandsons, Luke Anthony Popp, Nicolas Wayne Popp and Jake Matthew Popp.

Pallbearers will be Luke Anthony Popp, Nicolas Wayne Popp, Jake Matthew Popp, Wayne A. Popp, Gerald Mathis and Joe W. Mask.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of his many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 325 N. East Ave., Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lonnie Owens

Funeral services for Lonnie A. Owens, 89, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at GHFH Chapel with Rev. P.A. Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Mr. Owens died Aug. 31, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Wharton to Alex and Cherry Lee Johnson Owens.

Survivors include son, Francis M. Owens of Humble; brother, Alex Young of Houston; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pete Padia

Funeral mass for Pete Padia, 63, of Rosenberg, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Rosenberg. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Rev. Lee Flores will officiate the services.

A rosary was recited at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wharton.

Mr. Padia is survived by his wife of 19 years, Delia Padia; children, Rick Padia and wife Carol, Steven Padia and wife Valerie, Susan Faix and husband C.D., Peter Padia, Mario Gonzales and wife Terri, Rebecca Gonzales and Andrea Ibarra and husband Andrew; brothers, Tom Padia and wife Tina, Raymond Padia and wife JoAnn; sister, Susie Valdez and husband Mike; grandchildren, Rikki, Alexa, Bradley, Taylor, Torie and Luke Padia, Alyssa Gonzales, Meredith and Travis Faix, Katalina and Kanaan Ibarra; along with other numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Cantu, Bradley Padia, Joseph Padia, Robert Padia, Andrew Ibarra and Jimmy Medina.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B. F. Terry Blvd., Rosenberg.

Lloyd Robinson

Funeral services for Lloyd James Robinson Sr., 88, of Beasley, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Booker officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mr. Robinson died Aug. 30, 2005, at Brazosview Healthcare Center in Richmond. He was born Feb. 28, 1917, in East Bernard to the late Sylvester and Burnetta Craven Roberson.
He married Eddie Mae Roberson on Dec. 27, 1939.

Mr. Robinson was a senior deacon of his church and a longtime resident of Kendleton and Fort Bend counties. He was a laborer for the railroad until his retirement.

Survivors include wife, Eddie Mae Robinson of East Bernard; son, Lloyd Robinson Jr. of Jasper; daughter, Emma and husband Harvey Hayes of East Bernard; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony R. Robinson; and daughter, Judith Faye Robinson.

Ted Sanders

Rabbi Ted Sanders passed away in Houston, Wednesday August 31, 2004, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Sanders; four children, JoAnne Berman, Mark Sanders, Kenneth Sanders and Ronald Sanders of Wharton; two step-children, Richard Bookbinder and Helene Bookbinder; grandson, Zachary Sanders; sisters and brother, Annie Goldberg, Minnie Offstein, Jeanette Gerhman and Irvin Sachs.

Graveside funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at 3 p.m. in Beth Jacob Cemetery with Rabbi Jack Segal officiating.

Rabbi Sanders had been the rabbi at Congregation Shearith Israel in Wharton.
He later served as chaplain at the Texas Medical Center and as chief Jewish chaplain for the Texas Dept. of Corrections.

L.M. Shorter

Funeral services for L.M. Shorter, 70, of Egypt, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Shorter died Aug. 31, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Wharton to Isaac and Alberta Harris Shorter.

Survivors include son, L.M. Bryant of Van Vleck; daughters, Alberta Brown and La Rose Bolden, both of Egypt, Renae Shorter of Virginia and Roxane Thompson of Killeen; brother, Clarence Shorter of Richmond; sisters, Lizzie Smith of Bay City and Elnora Bankston of Elm Grove; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Waldo Zahn

Funeral services for Waldo Werner Zahn, 71, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery.

Mr. Zahn died Aug. 31, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 20, 1934 in Wharton, the son of the late Rudolph George Zahn and Daisy Mae Maloy Zahn.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton.

Mr. Zahn married Betty Jo Simms on Feb. 20, 1958, in Wharton.

He worked as a foreman at Wharton Livestock Auction until his retirement in July of 1995.

Mr. Zahn was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Dee Prince, and a sister, Olga Kohleffel.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Zahn of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Sam Jaquez of Wharton; sisters, Myrtle Ustynik and Margaret Nitsche, both of Wharton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second St., Wharton, TX 77488.
