Marion Earls
Funeral services for Marion Leon Earls, 60, of Wharton will he held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church with Rev. A. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery. Visitation will be fro m 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.
Mr. Earls died June 17, 2004, at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was born Dec. 19, 1943 in Wharton to Harold and Blanch Sanford Earls.
Survivors include his mother: Blanch Sanford Earls of Wharton; sons, Carl Earls and Deon Earls, both of Wharton; daughters, Regina Earls of Wharton and Sheila Hayes of Houston; brothers, Alex Earls Sr. of Missouri City and Arthur Lee Earls Sr. of Houston; sister, Bonnie Earls Gray of Wharton; and 12 grandchildren.
Alyce Mechura
Funeral services are pending for Alyce Jean Mechura, 69, of Lane City at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mechura died June 21, 2004, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness.
L.V. Brooks
Funeral services for L.V. Brooks, 63, of Edna, were held Monday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Washington Cemetery.
Mr. Brooks died June 16, 2004, in Edna. He was born Aug. 17, 1940, in Wharton to the late Kenneth and Bernice Prince Sayles Brooks.
He worked as a carpenter and was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include daughter, Regina Brooks of Edna; sons, Jonathan Brooks of Austin, Gregory Brooks of Laredo and Leonard Brooks of Garland; sisters, Celesteen Mike of Victoria, Creola Barnes of Edna, Karlene Barnes and Ruthie Sayles, both of California; brothers, Kenneth Brooks of Edna, Robert James Brooks of Victoria, Ernest Brooks of Omaha, Neb., Dimple Lee Sayles of California, Victor Sayles of Houston and Dudley Sayles of San Antonio; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Neil Weldon
Neil W. Weldon, 73, of Bay City died June 17, 2004, at his resident. He was born May 21, 1931, in Pushmatha County, Okla., to the late Hiram Newton and Celia Jane Scott Weldon.
Mr. Weldon was a member of First Baptist Church and a resident of Bay City since 1984. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, a member of and past president of Matagorda County Crime Stoppers, and was a petroleum engineer.
Survivors include: wife, Peggy Elkins Weldon of Bay City; daughter, Jennifer Weldon of Bay City; sons and a daughter-in-law, David N. and Teresa Weldon of Arlington and Michael S. Weldon of Sugar Land; granddaughters, Audrey and Claim Weldon, both of Arlington; nieces, Lana Weldon Nielsen of Humble and Jenel Weldon of Freeport; nephew, Larry Leon Weldon of Bay City; great-niece, Amber Nielsen of Humble. He was preceded in death by his two brothers Paul E. and Larry Weldon.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Bay City with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dana Nielsen and Bob Freeman.

Irene Williams
Funeral services for Irene Moses Williams, 57, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at New Horizon Holiness Church in Bay City with Rev. Charles Roberson officiating. Burial will follow in Ashwood Union Baptist Cemetery.
Mrs. Williams died June 17, 2004, at her home. She was born Sept. 6, 1946, in Wharton to Harbert and Nellie Davis Moses Sr.
Survivors include parents, Harbert and Nellie Davis Moses Sr. of Egypt; son, Charles K. Williams Jr. of Houston; daughter, Chrisandra Williams of Wharton; brothers, Harbert Moses Jr. of Egypt and Otis Moses of LaGurdria, Calif.; sisters, Gloria Delcambre of Hitchcock, Nellie Abbot of Ashwood and Roberta Calhoun of Walnut, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Mary Hermes
Funeral services for Mary L. Hermes, 91, of Yoakum, were held Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home with Rev. Charles Sonnier officiating. Entombment was held at St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum. Wake services were held Sunday at Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum.
Mrs. Hermes died July 30, 2004. She was born Jan. 18, 1913, in Lavaca County to the late John and Annie Jalufka Jurena.
She married John Hermes and he preceded her in death. Mrs. Hermes was a homemaker and Catholic by faith.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Smolik of Wharton, Betty Stevens of La Grange and Jeanne Weber of Yoakum; sister, Ella Sitka of Wharton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Annie Hanus and Millie Marek; and brothers, John Jurena, Gus Jurena and Emil Jurena.

Delbert Brod
Delbert Elmer Brod, age 73, of Wharton, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on Nov. 4, 1930, in Louise, on Webbs Ranch to Elmer J. and Marie Barnett Brod.
Mr. Brod was a 1949 graduate of Wharton High School where he was an outstanding football player. He attended WCJC and later served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Mr. Brod was a self-made entrepreneur who owned several businesses including A-1 Driving School, Brod Farms Egg Company, land investments and cattle ranching. He was Baptist by faith.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Wharton with Dr. Gene Wofford and Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Brod is survived by his wife, Marianna Burton Brod of Wharton; sons, Delbert Brod Jr. of Missouri City and Max Earl Brod, II of Wharton; step-sons, Thomas Humphreys and wife, Becky, of Wharton and Kenny Humphreys and wife, Debbie, of Spring; step-daughter, Renee Humphreys of Houston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and J.C. McFarland of Caldwell and Dorothy and Gene Wofford of Missouri City; brother and sister-in-law, Max and Bobbie Brod of Wharton; grandchildren, Brian Tritico and wife, Lisa, Lauren Schuck, Kyle Humphreys and Keith Humphreys; and a host of other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Tom Hudgins, Sonny McCurry, Marcial Sorrel, Timmy Barker, Ray Reed and Eric Muegge.
He dearly loved his family and continued to cherish a host of friends he made throughout the years. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Hildegard Farmer
Funeral services for Hildegard Farmer, 81, of Boling, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Skip Holman officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Farmer died July 28, 2004. She was born on July 16, 1923, in Rosenberg.
She was a nurse at Gulf Coast Medical Center for many years.
Mrs. Farmer was preceded in death by husband of 54 years, Robert Farmer; mother and father, Eugene and Frances Ganske; and brother, George Ganske. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Dorothy Ganske of Boling; sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Ed Moore of Waco; daughters and sons-in-law, Olivia and Charles Brower of West Columbia and Jean and Terry Wunderlich of Huntsville; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ginny Farmer of Conroe and Douglas Farmer of Forney; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruby Norris
Funeral services for Ruby Bernice Norris, 83, of Houston, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lane City with Rev. B. Sanford officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Norris died July 28, 2004, at her residence. She was born in Wharton to Abram and Charlotte Ivory Myers.
Survivors include sons, Clyde Owens and Ned Norris, both of Houston, and Darryl Norris of Lane City; and 14 grandchildren.

Peter Brooks
Peter Gautier Brooks, 83, born April 18, 1921, in Wharton, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Houston. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen Douglas Frazar and his parents, Edward Gautier Brooks and Marie Harrison Brooks.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife, Jane Moody Brooks; daughters, Susan Inge Brooks and husband John Salzman and Sarah Brooks Eilers and husband Eric E. Eilers; sons, Dr. Edward Gautier Brooks II and wife Dr. Helena Lekan Brooks and Peter Moody Brooks and wife Carla Escoda Brooks; seven grandchildren, James, Ellen and Harrison Eilers, Antonia, Gayla and Paloma Brooks and Rachel Brooks; and nephews, Brig. Gen. Joe N. Frazar and Dick Frazar and their families.
He attended Kemper military Academy, graduated from the University of Texas, where he was in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and received an MBA from Wharton Graduate School. Mr. Brooks was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II and made his lifelong career in banking.
He was vice-president of Bank of the Southwest, CEO, chairman of the board and president from 1958 until 1973 at Western National Bank and chairman of the board, CEO, president, 1975-1979, at South Main Bank. Mr. Brooks was member of the Houston Country Club, a lifelong member of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, Brenham Rotary Club and member of St. John the Devine Episcopal Church. He was dedicated to historic preservation and served as chairman of the advisory board at Winedale Historical Center of the University of Texas. He loved his farm, Windhill, in Brenham, and raised quarter horses there.
Honorary pallbearers were Lars Bang, Jack Bowen, Conrad Bering, Cliff Wilson, Pharr Duson, Carlton Newman and Gen. Joe N. Frazar Jr.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004, in the chapel of St. John the Devine Episcopal Church, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston with Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall officiating.

Harry Lobpries
Harry D. Lobpries, age 83, of Garwood, passed away at his residence quietly in his sleep the early morning hours of July 26, 2004.
He was born June 26, 1921 in Beaumont, Jefferson County, and lived most all his life in Garwood, Colorado County. Mr. Lobpries was a graduate of Garwood High School Class of 1939, and served honorably with the U.S. Army Air Corps 8th Bomb Group in England during World War II.
Mr. Lobpries’ careers included serving as a bus driver and maintenance man for the Garwood School District for 33 years, owned and operated a waterfowl processing plant, and Harry’s Café a number of years. He also served as water superintendent for the Garwood Municipality, operated a welding shop and served as an electrician, plumber and carpenter when called upon. He loved and served his community with the Garwood Lions Club and coaching Little League and Babe Ruth League for 40 years. Lobpries was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada and former member in the Knights of Columbus. He married Rae Stewart in Chester, England on Aug. 2, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 1984, following an auto accident. On July 25, 1986, Mr. Lobpries married Rosie Konvicka in Garwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lobpries and Mary Pauler Lobpries; his first wife, Rae; a brother, Howard Lobpries. Survivors include his devoted wife, Rosie of Garwood; daughter, Margaret Sitka and husband, A.J. of Wharton; son, David Lobpries and wife, Terri, also of Wharton; step-children, Charles Tise of Arkansas and Shelley Lovett and husband, Chad, of Lufkin; sisters, Annie Russo of Houston, Edna Whitus of Spring, Louise Dunn of Houston and Madeline Pavlu of Garwood; seven grandchildren, Kelly Matula and husband Bryan of Sugar Land, Kara Lockley and husband, Richard, of Wharton, Kristen Cranek of Wharton, Kyle Cranek and wife, Evelyn, of Columbus, Leigh Ann Sitka of Wharton, Kristi Lobpries and Jami Lobpries, both of Wharton; step-grandchildren, Danielle Kramer and Krystal Kramer both of Victoria; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and loved ones including brother-in-law, Duncan Stewart of Lumberton.
A rosary was held 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, from the chapel of Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake led by Deacon Alvin Matthys from Holy Family Parish in Wharton. Funeral services followed 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2004, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nada with Rev. Joseph Kobel, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish, presiding. Cremation followed. The family assembled for private committal services at St. Mary’s Cemetery of Nada with military honors under the auspices of the El Campo V.F.W.
Pallbearers were Kyle Cranek, Thomas Kallina, Greg Lobpries, Howard Lynn Lobpries, Fred Wesselski, Paul Bittner.
Honorary Pallbearers were his grandchildren, all former Little League and Babe Ruth Players, and all former student bus riders.
