Mary Roades
Mary Ann Rider Roades, age 73, of El Campo, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on April 17, 1930, in Newgulf, the daughter of the late Frank Lee Rider and Edith Hairgrove Rider.
Mrs. Roades was reared in Newgulf and was a 1947 graduate of Boling High School. She later attended Wharton County Junior College. Mrs. Roades married Edgar Roades on July 9, 1949, in Newgulf. She worked as an executive secretary at Texas Gulf Sulphur Company for 26 years until her retirement in May of 1990. Mrs. Roades was a former member of the Newgulf Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church of Wharton and is a current member of the First Presbyterian Church of El Campo. She was a member of various organizations including the El Campo Garden Club, El Campo Museum, Hospice Volunteer, Gulf Coast Medical Center Pink Ladies, SHARE volunteer and Community Bible Study. Mrs. Roades was a former Sunday School teacher for 20 years, Girl Scout area chairman, and a member of the Wharton County Junior College Phi Theta Kappa. Her favorite hobbies were playing bridge, Mah jongg, square dancing and working crossword puzzles.
Following private family graveside services and interment in Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo, memorial services were held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton with The Reverend Richard Gould officiating and The Reverends Kenneth Goodell and Paul Thomasson assisting.
Survivors include her husband, Edgar Roades of El Campo; daughters, Pamela Henson and husband, Randy, of Spring and Patricia Roades of Greenville, N.C.; brother, Franklin Rider of Sherman; grandchildren, Jon Henson of Spring, Erik Henson and wife, Patty, of Cypress and Michael Quinn of Wharton. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Rider.
Pallbearers were Jon Henson, Erik Henson, Michael Quinn, Roger Rider, Paul Rider and Richard Rider.

Rumaldo Salas
Funeral services for Rumaldo Salas Jr., 74, of Wharton, were held Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited before the service.
Mr. Salas died Dec. 3, 2003, in a Richmond hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Wharton County on Jan. 30, 1929, the son of the late Rumaldo Salas and Lina Olivo Salas.
He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mr. Salas was a carpenter until his retirement. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include daughters; Gabriela Salas, Rebeca Salas and Lina Salas, all of Wharton; step-daughter, Sonia Ynfante of San Angelo; sisters, Manuela Peña and Victoria Salas, both of Wharton; and two grandchildren.
Irene Chadwick
Mrs. Irene Clara Chadwick, age 91, of Wharton, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. She was born in Iago on Aug. 29, 1912. the daughter of the late Henry J. Wilke and Ida Lamensky Wilke.
Mrs. Chadwick had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a life member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton. She married Jesse Franklyn Chadwick on Jan. 1, 1933, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1993. She was also preceded in death by three sisters.
She was a graduate of Wharton High School, a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church Ladies Aide Society and worked as a bookkeeper for Frazier Construction Co.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Barry Sharp officiating. Interment followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Floyd Janek of Spring; grandchildren, Kathy Frost, Vicki Kuciemba, Randy Janek and Patti Toller; great-grandsons, Nathan Frost, Keith Frost, Larry Kuciemba Jr., Rusty Kuciemba, Nicholas Janek, Mitchell Toller and Matthew Toller.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Randy Janek, Terry Frost, Greg Toller, Larry Kuciemba Jr., Vernon Ullmann and Delvin Wuthrich.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 614 Pecan Street, Wharton, TX 77488.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
Franklin Fojtik
Franklin B. Fojtik of New Braunfels passed away Monday, November 17, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital in San Antonio after a lengthy bout with cancer.
Mr. Fojtik was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Adelle Fojtik of Needville.
He is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Kristi Fojtik of Van Nuys, Calif., Charlotte and Fernando Montes of Lake Jackson and Cheri Fojtik of Austin; sisters and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Pat Reagon of Richardson and Jeraldine Fojtik of Houston and Jerry Fojtik of Needville.
He will be laid to rest at sea in a private ceremony.
Robert Johnson
Funeral services for Robert Oliver Johnson, 63, of Phoenix, Ariz., were held Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Ariz. Burial followed in East Resthaven Park Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson died Nov. 26, 2003. He was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Wharton to Marie Johnson.
He was a member of New Zion Bethel Baptist Church and was valedictorian of the 1959 graduating class of Wharton Training High School. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Prairie View A&M University. He then spent four years in the U.S. Army.
In 1965 he moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and was employed by the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation (later known as the U.S. Department of Energy) for 35 years. Mr. Johnson was a lifetime member of Alphi Phi Alpha Fraternity, Prairie View Alumni Association and “All God’s Children” Collector’s Club.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and held many offices in the church and was a member of the choir. He married the former Betty Joyce Young.
Survivors include wife, Betty Joyce Johnson; daughters and son-in-law, Ann Marie and Derek Everett and Sharon Elizabeth Johnson; step-mother, Lola Hawks; sisters, Ida Pritchard, Doris Smith and Ora Dean Cooper; brothers, George Hawks and Sterling Hawks; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Joe Mata
Memorial services for Joe B. Mata, 68, of Charlotte, N.C., and former longtime resident of Wharton County, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Wharton Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. the same day at Wharton Funeral Home. The family will gather after the services at the Boling Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Mata died Nov. 24, 2003, at his residence after a sudden illness. He was born July 2, 1936, in Lane City to the late Emilo and Ella Mata, formerly of Lane City.
He was a retired contract worker and was a veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He married the former Yvonne Mata.
Survivors include wife of 46 years, Yvonne Mata; children, Lorraine Gardner of North Carolina, Diane Lopez of Dickinson, Cynthia Rodriguez of Clear Lake, Victoria Lynn Perez of Bay City; step-daughter, Annette Whitecotton of North Carolina; step-son, Dwayne Plyler of North Carolina; sisters, Beatrice Palido of Houston, Santos Valerio, Dora Negrete and Lupe Enriquez, all of Boling, Mona Mata of Bay City and Mary Mata of Houston; brothers, Catarino Mata and Alex Mata, both of Wharton, Demas “Red” Mata and Nick Mata, both of Houston, and Emilo Mata III of Victoria; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Allen Miller
Memorial services for Allen W. Miller, 77, of Wharton, were held Saturday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home with J.B. Scarlett officiating.
Mr. Miller died Nov. 23, 2003, at his residence. He was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Wharton.
He is survived by a host of relatives and friends.
James Richardson
James “Doc” Leven Richardson, age 90, of Boling, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in Wharton. He was born on July 31, 1913, in Hardy, Ark., the son of the late Soloman and Zelma Sellers Richardson.
James married Hazel Marie Hoffman on May 17, 1935, in Bay City. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Force. Mr. Richardson worked for Texasgulf Sulfur in the production department and as a station operator from Feb. 1935 until his retirement in August of 1973. He lived his entire adult life in the Boling area and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wharton and Masonic Lodge No. 621 AF & AM. He enjoyed gardening, saltwater fishing, hunting and ranching.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Kersten officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Hazel Richardson of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Faye Richardson of Wharton and Jim and Cindy Richardson of London, England; sisters, Nelle Carmichael of Wichita, Kan., and Zelma Lawson of Wichita, Kan.; brother, Loyd Richardson of Springfield, Mo.; grandchildren and spouse, Melissa and Curtis Crow of Sugar Land, Matt Richardson of Boling, Ashley Richardson of Denton and David Richardson of London, England. He was preceded in death by one sister and seven brothers.
Pallbearers will be Ernest Hoffman, Harold Hoffman, Max Hoffman, Don Hoffman, A.C. Shelton and David Looper.

Viva Bennett Mitchell
Viva Fay Bennett Mitchell, 86, of Danbury passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2003 in Lake Jackson. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, November 29, in the First Baptist Church of Clute with Brother Mark Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the Danbury Cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell was born September 11, 1917 in Guy, Texas to James M. and Rosa L. Gryder Bennett. She graduated from Texas State College for Women. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Clute and retired from Danbury I.S.D. after 20 years of teaching. Mrs. Mitchell loved to paint and work in her garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Coy Mitchell; brother, James W. Bennett and sisters Ruth O. Josey and Mattie J. Matula, a granddaughter, Melissa Kay Meier; and son-in-law, Greg Morris.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Bud Meier of West Columbia, Cindy and Mike Konvicka of Hungerford; one brother, Ervin Bennett of Point Comfort; granddaughters, Wendi Peavy and Amanda Meier of West Columbia; great-granddaughters, Allison Peavy, Katie Scarlett Peavy and Mallory Peavy all of West Columbia.

Thomas Wayne Brown
Thomas Wayne Brown, age 17, of Wharton, died Tuesday night, Nov. 25, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following an automobile accident. He was born on June 24, 1986, in Wharton, the son of Earl Gene Brown and Teresa Lynn Lloyd Brown.
Thomas was a junior at Wharton High School. He was a former member of the Wharton FFA and worked at the Wharton Livestock Auction. He was Protestant by faith.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Hill officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his parents, Earl and Teresa Brown of Wharton; brother and sister-in-law, Todd Earl and Nicole Brown of Wharton; grandparents, Ernest Brown of Lane City, Judith Bennett of Groesbeck and Roger Lloyd of Comanche; great-grandmother, Margie Pokluda of Arkansas and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and one nephew.
Pallbearers were Billy Schwertner, John Atkinson, Jesse Garza, Mark Duncan, Jody Fucik and Richard Lockley.
Honorary pallbearers were all of his friends, neighbors and classmates at Wharton High School.

Irene Chadwick
Funeral services for Irene Chadwick, age 91, of Wharton, will be held Monday, December 1, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Wharton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, November 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Chadwick died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in Wharton following an extended illness.
Mary H. Gavranovic
Graveside services and interment for Mary H. Gavranovic, age 92 of Wharton, will be 2 p.m. Saturday November 29, 2003 in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Hungerford with Father Henry Rachunek officiating.
Mrs. Gavranovic died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 in Wharton. She was born on October 8, 1911 in Austin, Texas, the daughter of the late Ostosa Muniza and Marie Ondrias Muniza.
Mrs. Gavranovic was a lifelong resident of Wharton County, having lived in Hungerford and Wharton. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Johns Catholic Church in Hungerford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Gavranovic in 1980 and sons, Donnie Gavranovic and Lee Roy Charles Gavranovic.
Survivors include her three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and daughter-in-law Helen Gavranovic of Somerville.

Nancy Lovett
Nancy Christine Lovett, age 60 of Wharton, Texas, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at her home. She was born on August 28, 1943 in Wharton, the daughter of Robert F. Winston and the late Christine Hamilton Curley Winston.
She was a graduate of Brazosport High School and worked as a self-employed bookkeeper. She was a longtime resident of Houston and had lived in Wharton for the past 14 years. She was a member of the Golden Girls Coffee Club and loved to play bridge.
Following cremation, a celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at her residence, 1409 Halfmoon Drive in Wharton with Rev. Don Storey officiating.
Survivors include her daughters, Allie Christine Howard of Sugar Land, and Tracy Lynn Lovett of Houston; father, Robert F. Winston of Wharton; sister, Susie White of Houston; brothers, Dr. Leland Alfred Winston of Houston, Charles M. Winston of Houston, and Dr. Thomas P. Winston of Wharton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Don and Bonnie Waits of Shreveport, La. for the love and care they gave our mother and sister.
