Jaylon Vega

Graveside services for Jaylon Taylor Vega, one day old infant son of Richie Vega and Victoria Ramirez of Wharton, were held March 7, 2007, at Evergreen Cemetery in Wharton with Rev. Carlos Lynch officiating.

Jaylon died Friday, March 6, 2007, in a Bay City hospital. He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Pauline Ramirez.

In addition to his parents, survivors include grandparents, David and Gloria Ramirez and Baltazar and Gloria Vega, all of Wharton; great-grandparents, Simon and Paula Salvador and Josephina Vega and Guadelupe Ramirez; three aunts, three uncles and six cousins.

Johnnie Collins
Funeral services for Johnnie Collins, 93, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Herbert A.R. Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today.
Mr. Collins died July 6, 2002, at Triumph Hospital North Houston. He was born April 30, 1909, in Kendleton to John and Sarah Furin Collins.
He is survived by many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives.

Virginia Earls
Funeral services for Virginia Ann Earls, 63, of Wharton will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mother Zion Baptist Church with Rev. C.L. Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.
Mrs. Earls died July 8, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born May 6, 1939, in Wharton to Albert and Viola Steamer Young.
Survivors include husband, Arthur Earls Sr. of Houston; son, Arthur Earls Jr. of Houston; daughters, Janice Eddington of El Campo and Patricia Earls of San Antonio; brother, Henry Lipkins of New York City, N.Y.; sisters, Hazel Young of Oakland, Calif., and Lorine Young of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Modesta Escamilla
Funeral services for Modesta M. Escamilla, 54, of El Campo, were held Thursday at St. Robert’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary was recited Wednesday night at Triska Funeral Home.
Mrs. Escamilla died July 8, 2002. She was born Dec. 17, 1947, in Wharton County to the late Daniel and Simona Castillo Mata.
She married Robert L. Escamilla and was a homemaker. Mrs. Escamilla was a member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margarita Mata; brother, Robert Mata; and infant brother, Victor Mata.
Survivors include husband, Robert L. Escamilla of El Campo; twin daughters, Nancy Escamilla and Patricia Escamilla, both of El Campo; son, Robert Daniel Escamilla of College Station; sisters, Janie Sanchez of Needville and Mary Jones of Palestine; brothers, Daniel Mata and Guadalupe Mata, both of Wharton.

Patricia Hoke
Mrs. Patricia Ann Hoke, age 58, of Wharton, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. She was born on Feb. 6, 1944, in Stamford, Conn., the daughter of Raymond M. and Vera Toother Smith.
Mrs. Hoke had been a resident of Wharton since 1972 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She was a former assistant principal at Wharton Junior High School and has been an assistant principal at Dawson Elementary School since 1993. Mrs. Hoke worked with the Wharton Independent School District for the past 24 years. She married Jerry C. Hoke on August 26, 1965, in Fairborn, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father.
Following cremation a memorial funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating.
Survivors include husband, Jerry C. Hoke of Wharton; sons, Michael Hoke of Wharton, Jonathan Hoke of Houston and David Hoke of Melbourne, Australia; mother, Vera Smith of Tuczon, Ariz.; sister, Veronica Sullivan of Los Altos Hills, Calif., and Alison Smith of Tuczon, Ariz.; brothers, Raymond Smith of Santa Luisa, Calif., and Robert Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and grandsons, Christopher Hoke and Patrick Hoke.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to Habitat For Humanity, c/o Colorado County HFH, Eagle Lake, Texas 77434-0456.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Carlyne McLeod
Funeral services for Carlyne Walker McLeod, 70, of Angleton, were held Friday at Second Baptist Church in Angleton with Rev. C.E. Tipton, Rev. D.O. Foster and Rev. Mike Mills officiating. Burial followed in Angleton Cemetery.
Mrs. McLeod died July 9, 2002, in Angleton. She was born April 24, 1932, in Wharton to Carl and Alma Lucille Walker.
She had lived in Angleton since 1952, and retired after a long career with Brazoria County. Mrs. McLeod was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include husband of 50 years, James “Jim” A. McLeod of Angleton; son, Jimmy McLeod Jr. of Angleton; daughter and son-in-law, Nina L. Jerry Hall of Angleton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church Building Fund.

William Wearden
Funeral services for William George Wearden Jr., 81, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Wearden died July 11, 2002 in Wharton.

Josephine Hearse
Funeral services for Josephine Hearse, 84, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Hearse died July 4, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Wharton to Will and Mary Jane Hearse.
Survivors include daughter, Johnnie Mae Hearse of Wharton; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rivers Mackie

Funeral services for Rivers Mackie, 95, of Grand Prairie, will be held today, Saturday, at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, La., with Fred Luker Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivette Cemetery in New Orleans, La.

Mrs. Mackie died Jan. 21, 2003, at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. He was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Lindsey, La.

He was a longshoreman and member of ILA Local No. 300. Mr. Mackie was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Raymond Woodard of Dallas; sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny B. and Ardelia Hayes and Theodore Hill; and 14 grandchildren.

Lucy Peterman

Funeral services for Lucy Peterman, 79, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Seven Star Baptist Church in Hungerford. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Ms. Peterson died Jan. 23, 2003.

Willie Sanders

Funeral services for Willie Mae Sanders, 58, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at The Temple of Glory in Kendleton with Rev. A. Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanders died Jan. 19, 2003, at Memorial Hermann Hospital. She was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Wharton to Willie and Virgie Payne Moore.

Survivors include parents, Willie and Virgie Moore, both of Wharton; husband, Rev. Johnny Lee Sanders Sr. of Wharton; son, Johnny Lee Sanders Jr. of Wharton; daughters, Patricia Ann Sanders, Christine Green and Regina Jerrois, all of Wharton; brothers, James Moore and Patrick Moore, both of Wharton; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

Reatha Scarlett

Memorial services for Reatha Deloris Scarlett, 74, of Wharton, were held Friday at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall.

Mrs. Scarlett died at her home Jan. 19, 2003. She was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Wharton to Guy and Millie Myers Ford.

Survivors include sons, Ronald Hicks of Houston and Charlie Hicks of Rosharon; daughters, Rita Hicks of Houston, Wilma Edwards of Fort Worth, Linda Hicks of Houston, Laverne Baker and Pamela Roberts of Seat Pleasant, Md.; sister, Mittie Bailey of Wharton; nine grandchildren with a host of other relatives and friends.

Sybil Shanks

Funeral services for Sybil Inez Shanks, 66, of Wharton were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Shanks died Jan. 21, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born May 10, 1936, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Floyd Barker and Ollie Waters Barker.

She had been a life-long resident of Wharton and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wharton. Mrs. Shanks worked as a dispatcher for the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Wharton for 16 and one-half years until her retirement in 1997. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Sue Shanks in 1979, and a brother, Edgar “Pistol” Barker in 1970.

Survivors include her son, James Keith Shanks of Mississippi; sister, Kathy Sikes of Richmond; brother, Joe Barker of Wharton; and one granddaughter.

Honorary Pallbearers were all current and former members of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Department and the Wharton Police Department.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1292, Wharton, Texas; or Wharton Volunteer Fire Department, 319 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Lillie Shaw

Funeral services for Lillie Lee Shaw, 82, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with her nephew William Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery in West Columbia.

Mrs. Shaw died Jan. 23, 2003, in Bay City. She was born April 6, 1920, in Gore, Okla.

She was a lifelong area resident and member of the West Columbia Church of Christ.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Joe and Dianne Shaw of Goliad and Earl L. “Boogie” and Norma Shaw of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Ann and Clinton Long of Wharton and Judy Gail and Greg Goodwin of Justin; brother and sister-in-law, James and Ruth Edwards of Huntsville; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Adeline T. Kughn

Adeline Thekla Kughn, age 82, of Wharton, died Thursday, March 21, 2003, in a Hillje nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 14, 1921, in New Braunfels, the daughter of the late Albert Ferdinand Klatt and Rosalie Mathilda Kunde Klatt.

Mrs. Kughn had been a resident of Wharton County most of her life. She attended schools in New Braunfels, Seguin and Crescent. Mrs. Kughn was Lutheran by faith and formerly attended the Methodist Church in Glen Flora. She married Jake William Kughn on Jan. 1, 1950, in El Campo and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1988. Mrs. Kughn assisted her husband at the Taiton Feed Mill and with the family farm. Three brothers also preceded her in death, Raymond A. Klatt, Adelbert Klatt and Albertus Klatt; and one sister, Telka Treybig.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Cartwright officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Laverne Rose and Leroy Bacak of El Campo, Cathy Diane and Robert Cartwright of Alvin, Carol Ann and J. Mark Gresham of Wharton and Linda Faye and Abel Gonzales of Wallis; sisters and brother-in-law, Roma R. Stancliff of El Campo, Zora D. and Edmund Chaka of Wharton and Delrose A. Stevens of Wharton; brother and sisters-in-law, R.R. and Pauline Klatt of El Campo and Edna Guess of Hillje; grandchildren include L. James Bacak, Lachelle Pasak, Ryan Cartwright, Raymond Cartwright, Rachel Cartwright, Jennifer Hart, Lori Krpec, Amy Gresham, Savannah Gresham, Adam Gonzales, Kate Gonzales and Micah Gonzales; eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Pallbearers were James Cartwright, Hart Cartwright, Ryan Cartwright, Adam Gonzales, Melvin Klatt, Jerry Fabrygal, James Chaka, Al Klatt Jr. and Lloyd Klatt.

Honorary pallbearers were Christian Bacak, Bailey Pasak, Jacob Schulz, Shane Ryan, Jessica Hart, Kevin Krpec, Mycol Tong and Anthony Tong.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, Texas 77057, or Wharton County Library, 1920 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488 or a church or charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Ramiro Mendoza

Funeral services for Ramiro Mendoza, 51, of Bay City, were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery. A rosary service was held Monday at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mr. Mendoza died March 23, 2003, in Hermann Hospital in Houston after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1952, in Rio Grande to Ignacio Mendoza and Eduvijes Diaz.

He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and married Tomasa Mendoza. Mr. Mendoza worked as a truck driver and was Catholic by faith.

Survivors include wife, Tomasa Mendoza; daughter, Mary Ann Mendoza; sons, Ramiro Mendoza Jr. and Roman Perez; sisters and brother-in-law, Lidia and Victor Bentacur, Julie Mendoza and Rosa Mendoza; brothers, Joe Mendoza, Miguel Mendoza and Rafael Mendoza.

Richard Seydler

Following cremation, private memorial services for Richard Warren Seydler, 80, of East Bernard, were held.

Mr. Seydler died March 21, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on July 25, 1922, in El Campo, the son of the late Henry Seydler and Edna Kleckler Seydler.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County living in East Bernard. Mr. Seydler married Ella Mae Hensley on July 31, 1942, in Wharton. He was a farmer and rancher since 1942.

Survivors include wife, Ella Mae Seydler of East Bernard; daughters and son-in-law, Geneva and Pat Viaclovsky of Wharton and Margaret Wall of Phoenix, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Nancy Seydler of East Bernard; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Hospice, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.
