Rebecca Vasquez

Rebecca Cerrillo Vasquez, age 38, of Tomball, died Friday, April 22, 2005 in Tomball. She was born in Wharton on Jan. 24, 1967, the daughter of John Cerrillo and Frances Cruz.

Mrs. Vasquez was raised in Wharton. She was a former longtime resident of Houston before moving to Tomball in 2000. Mrs. Vasquez was employed as a secretary for the Weatherford Dirt Service for the past two years. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Tomball.

Following cremation, a memorial funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Guerra officiating. Graveside services and interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughters, Natasha Cerrillo and Terra Cerrillo, both of Tomball; mother, Frances Cerrillo of Tomball; brothers, John Cerrillo and wife, Susan, of Houston and Phillip Cerrillo of Tomball; nieces, Alyssa Cerrillo and McKayla Cerrillo, both of Houston, and nephew, Phillip James Cerrillo. Mrs. Vasquez was preceded in death by her father, John Cerrillo.
If desiring, memorials may be made to the Mental Health Association; or Domestic Violence; or the Kidney Foundation.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Raymond Bankston

Funeral services for Raymond Earl Bankston, 69, of Egypt, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. R. Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today.

Mr. Bankston died May 4, 2005, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Egypt to Porter and Alberta Blunston Bankston.

Survivors include son, Bobby Bankston of Dallas; daughter, Joyce Gordon of Hungerford; brothers, Cornell Godsey and Dornell Godsey, both of Houston; sister, Leola Godsey of Houston; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lee Foss

Lee Roy Foss, age 82, of Glen Flora, passed away on May 3,2005, from injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident. He was born in Cottonwood on May 22, 1922, to the late Fred and Aggie Freudensprung Foss.

Mr. Foss was reared in Rosenberg and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Theresa Niscavitis in Flatonia and reared three children. Mr. Foss was employed for 16 years by Westinghouse and 20 years for General Electric as a truck driver in Houston. He was an energetic, brave, generous, devoted family man and lived his life as he died, courageously and fighting untill the end.

He is survived by his son Fred Foss and wife Emily of Wharton; daughters, Cynthia Wendel and husband Larry and Kathy Hines and husband James, all of Glen Flora; grandsons, Randy Hines of San Antonio and Jimmy Hines of Glen Flora; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Theresa Niscavitis Foss, in 2003; and his 28-year-old grandson, Kevin Lee Hines, in 2004.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, Friday, at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are James Hines, Larry Wendel, Jimmy Hines, Randy Hines, Shannon Stranadel and David Spain.

Memorial donations in memory of Lee Roy Foss may be made to the City of Wharton Animal Shelter.

Arthur Wilson

A memorial service for Arthur A. Wilson, 74, of Bryan is set for 10 a.m. today, Friday, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeremy Lightsey officiating.

Mr. Wilson died May 2, 2005, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. He was born in Wharton on Feb. 3, 1931.

He had lived in Bryan since 1961. Mr. Wilson received his associate’s degree from Bee County College and later worked there as a supervisor for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a drummer in the Air Force Band. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Wharton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula D. Wilson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Herbie Richards and Marcia and Mike Lightsey, all of Bryan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rudy and Jane Wilson of Live Oak, Fla., and Weldon and Nettie Lou Wilson of Freer; a sister, Freda McCarty of Van Vleck; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Scott & White Cancer Research Center, 2401 S. 31st St., Temple, TX 76501.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Silas Jacobs

Funeral services for Silas Jacobs, age 99, of Wharton, were held at 1 p.m., Friday July 15, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Jacobs died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 in a Wharton hospital. He was born on May 5, 1906 in Columbus, the son of the late Andrew Jacobs and Willinema Keck Jacobs.
He married Frances Cecilia Wisnieski on July 30, 1924 in Wharton. She preceded him in death on February 11, 1993. Mr. Jacobs was a self employed rancher and farmer, a 91 year resident of Wharton and was Protestant by faith. His favorite pastime was hunting fox with his fox hounds.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Forrest Thompson of Cleburne, Rosalie and Kenneth Jones of Houston, Dorothy Mae Janko of Houston and Ruby and Hubert Sliva of Giddings; son, Billy Ray Jacobs of Houston; 28 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Mr. Jacobs was preceded in death by sons, Lester John Jacobs, Louis Silas Jacobs and Robert Lee Jacobs; sisters, Lucille Velar and Annie Kowis; brother, Lester Jacobs.
Pallbearers were his grandsons. Memorials may be made to your charity of choice.

Viola “Nanny” Melton

Viola “Nanny” Melton, age 69 of El Campo, passed away on July 12, 2005 at her home. She was born on February 10, 1936 in West Palm Beach, Florida to the late Walter Scott Steele and Simmie Docie Clayton Fowler.
She had been the manager of the Stoneridge Apartments in El Campo for the past 10 years and was involved in civic and community organizations.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Pamela and Robert Hubenak of Wharton, Marsha and Dudley Wooten of Humble; a brother Edward Steele of Lake Worth, Florida; grandchildren Chad Hubenak, Nikole Nelson and Autumn Wooten; great grandchildren Lexie Nelson and Brittani Hubenak; and nieces and nephews, Katherine Steele, Gloria Cockrell, Phoenix Steele, Ed Steele, Jr., and Daniel Steele.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Oliver Steele.
Visitation was on Thursday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Triska Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, at Triska Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Pitts officiating. Interment followed at the Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton.
Pallbearers were Steve Saenz, Joe Lyons, Chad Hubenak, Roland Larch, Shawn Ferguson and Raymond Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers were Gonzalo Medrano, Dr. Tom Baccam, The El Campo Police Department and El Campo EMS.
Memorial donations in memory of Viola Melton may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Isaac Miller

Funeral services for Isaac Miller Jr., 47, of El Campo, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.
Mr. Miller died July 12, 2005, at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was born Jan. 1, 1958, in El Campo to Georgia Brown and Isaac Miller Sr. He worked in construction.
Survivors include mother, Georgia Miller; son, Isaiah Miller; and sisters, Melissa Miller and Mary Brown. Contact Matthews Funeral Home.

Garion Henry Sikora

Garion Henry Sikora, 58, a Pilot and Instructor, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2005 in Euless.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m., Monday, July 18 at J.E. Foust and Son Memorial Chapel in Grapevine. Visitation wil be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the funeral home.
Mr. Sikora was born January 12, 1947 in Wharton, to Simon And Marie Sikora. He graduated from East Bernard High School in East Bernard and was a graduate of Lamar College. He served three years in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War. Sikora worked for CAE Simuflite for 16 years as a pilot and instructor.
He was preceded in death by his father Simon. Garion was a very loving and devoted father, son and friend.
Survivors are daughters, Daniele Sikora, Laurie Case and husband Ricky and Courtney Sikora; mother of Garion’s children, Dena Matter; mother, Marie Sikora; brothers, Dale Sikora of Hungerford and Simon Sikora of Houston; and the many friends who knew and loved him.

Arthur Edward Zahn Sr.

Arthur Edward Zahn Sr., age 71, of Wharton, died Wednesday July 13, 2005 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born on June 15, 1934 in Wharton, the son
of the late Fred Zahn and Matilda Schmidt Zahn.
Arthur was a life long resident of Wharton and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mr. Zahn was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U. S. Army as a Defense Acquisition Radar Crewman. He married Shirley Jean Macha on November 19, 1961 in Wharton. He was employed as a Parts Man for the S. L. Miori Co. for 25 years and for the past five years as a Security Guard for Wharton County Junior College.
Mr. Zahn was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus member and a member of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87. He loved raising cattle and gardening.

Funeral mass services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday July 16, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating. military graveside services and interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87.
Rosary and Wake services were held Friday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home with Mr. Bill Kincer and Mr. Tim Duyka officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Zahn of Wharton; daughter, Nicole Orsak and husband, Jeffrey of Wharton, son, Arthur Zahn Jr. and wife, Donna of Wharton; sister, Alma Buenger of Wharton; grandchildren, Dustin Zahn, Sara Zahn, Britney Orsak and Amber Orsak.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Zahn; brothers, Alfred Albert Zahn Sr., Walter Ervin Zahn, and Willie Zahn; brothers-in-law, Daniel Buenger and Johnnie Jedlicka and by nephews, Stephen Jedlicka and Tommy Buenger.

Pallbearers are Butch Harris, Wilbert Hundl, Freddie Zahn, Ed Orsak, Irvin Ullmann and Jason Peter. Honorary pallbearers are Ludy Zahn, Richard Zahn, David Zahn, Robert Stolle, Elo Stolle, Anton Peter, Bubba Macha, Vervon Ullmann, Bennie Konvicka, S. L. Miori, his nephews, his many friends, all security guards and friends at Wharton County Junior College.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Jerry Duquette

Gerald Joseph (Jerry) Duquette, age 81 of Wharton died Saturday, July 16, 2005 in a Wharton Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on June 4, 1924 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada the son of the late Louis and Elsie Chasley Duquette.

Mr. Duquette had been a resident of Wharton for the past 58 years and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He worked with Schlumberger for 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a piano technician and owner of Duquette Piano Service in Wharton for the past thirty five years. He was also a musician and played drums for Henry King, Freddy Gibbons, Dick Krueger, Jimmy Mardo, the Norman Brown Trio and Russell Jackson. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Wharton and a veteran of World War II. He married Doris Marie Valenta on April 7, 1947 in Wharton.
A Rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church and a Funeral Mass followed at 10 a.m. with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Duquette of Wharton; a son, Mark Duquette of Wharton; brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Lillian Duquette of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and a nephew, Gary Duquette of Fort Lauderdale.
Pallbearers were Norman Brown, Scottie House, Ernest Giesie, Ed Joyce, Danny Ratliff and Bernard Orsak.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second St., Wharton, TX 77488.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

R. T. Edwards

Funeral services for R. T. Edwards, age 75, of Louise, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005 at First Baptist Church, 210 Depot, El Campo. Visitation will be Friday at Holy Temple Church of God In Christ, Louise from 6 to 9 p.m.
He was born on May 30, 1930 in Louise, Texas to Maple and Herman Edwards. He died on July 14, 2005.
Mr. Edwards married Doris North and to this union four children were born. R. T. was employed by Kainer Welding in El Campo and El Campo Rice Mill, Louise.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Andrew Harvey; sister, Bernice Edwards Wiley and brother, Walter “Red” Edwards.
His survivors include his wife, Doris Edwards, two daughters, Doris Jean (Kwaku) Tenah of Gainesville, Fla. and Norma Jean Edwards of Louise; two sons, Louis Ray and Bertha Edwards Sr. of Wharton and Odis Ray Edwards of Louise; one brother, Clifton Edwards Sr. of Houston; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends Gooden- Hatton Funeral Directors, Wharton, Texas in charge.

Hattie Mae Ephran

Funeral services for Hattie Mae Ephran, age 100, of Wharton, will be held Saturday, July 23, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Mother Zion Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Darryl Bailey of Houston presiding. Visitation will be Friday July 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home in Wharton. Burial will be in Wharton City Cemetery.
She died Sunday, July 17, 2005 in a Sugar Land hospital. She was born January 1, 1905. Her parents were Jessie Evans and Mary Roberts. She was a housewife.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Effie Bailey of Wharton, Ruby and Ellic Bailey of Victoria, Anna Moore of San Antonio and Yvonne Bailey of Huntsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Sophie Ephran and Edward and Mabel Ephran all of Wharton; as well as 34 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Ellie Pittman

Georgia Eleanore (Ellie) Pittman, 84, of Wharton died Friday, July 14, 2005 in a Houston hospital. Following cremation, a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
