David Barnes
Funeral services for David Lafayette Barnes Jr., 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bible Truth Apostolic Church with Rev. Don Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Barnes died Sept. 10, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 9, 1947, in El Campo to David Lafayette and Estella Webb Barnes Sr.
Survivors include wife, Rosie M. Shorter Shelton of Wharton; brother, Alfred Barnes of El Campo; sisters, Eloise Barnes, Connie Barnes and Pearlie Barnes, all of El Campo.

Perry Schumacher
Memorial services for Perry William Schumacher, 73, of Glen Flora, were held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, at Dobie Funeral Home in Mathis.
Mr. Schumacher died Sept. 11, 2004, in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born July 26, 1931, to the late Perry and Elsie Schumacher.
He serve in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 until 1953. Mr. Schumacher married Bobbie Ruth Laird in 1952 and she preceded him in death in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Woody; and son, Mark.
Survivors include sons, Duane Schumacher of Corrientes, Argentina, and Steve Schumacher of Orange Grove; brothers, Charley Schumacher of Beeville and Davy Schumacher of Bluntzer; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Irene Buss
Irene Ida Sklar Buss, age 85, of Wharton, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton following a courageous battle against cancer. She was born on Oct. 31, 1918, in East Bernard, the daughter of the late Edward E. and Frances Opella Sklar.
Mrs. Buss married Rueben Walter Buss on June 4, 1940, in East Bernard. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1960. She was a longtime employee of Mary’s Dress Shop and Margie & Lee’s prior to retiring in 1982. She had been a resident of Wharton since 1950 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mrs. Buss was also a member of the Holy Family Altar Society and S.P.J.S.T. She was a caring mother whose grandchildren were the love of her life.
A funeral mass was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Wally Rodriguez officiating.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Linda Buss of Bay City; daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis and Marvin Reavis of Round Rock and Sharon Richardson of Bay City; grandchildren, Lynsey Buss, Brandon Reavis, Kate Reavis, Rebecca Richardson and Rachel Richardson. She was preceded in death by her brother, Victor Sklar.
Pallbearers were Marvin Reavis, Brandon Reavis, Larry Buss, Bobby Jones, Edward Opella and Ronnie Ondrias.

Funeral services for Loretta Byars, 67, of Kendleton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newmann Chapel United Methodist Church in Kendleton.
Mary Dawson
Mary Jane Dawson, age 66, of Wharton, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born on Aug. 15, 1938, in Pataskala, Ohio, the daughter of the late John C. Watson and Mary V. Eyman Watson.
Mrs. Dawson had been a resident of Wharton since 1996 and was a former 25-year resident of Houston. She was a graduate of Watkins Memorial High School in 1956. Mrs. Dawson married Gail Ray Dawson on Sept. 9, 1959, in Pataskala, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Dawson was a homemaker and was Methodist by faith.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday evening, Feb. 21, 2005, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Story officiating. Burial followed in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
Survivors include her step-daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Charles Eing of Canal Winchester, Ohio; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Bill Love of Granville, Ohio, Martha and Bob Adams of Grove City, Ohio, and Pat and Fred Barnhill of Pataskala, Ohio; special friends, Jean and Ron Shultz of Wharton; grandson, Michal Butler of Columbus, Ohio; and great-granddaughters, Aly Butler and Celsey Butler of Lancaster, Ohio.

Carlos Driscoll
Carlos Driscoll Jr., age 71, of Houston died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on June 22, 1933, in Mackey, the son of the late Carlos Driscoll Sr. and Manuela Barrera Driscoll.
Mr. Driscoll had been a resident of Houston since 1955 and was bus driver for the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority for 15 years until his retirement in 1996. He married Alicia Arevalo on April 29, 1987, in Wharton. Mr. Driscoll was a former resident of Midfield and enjoyed fishing. He graduated from Tidehaven High School in 1953. He was a member of the Catholic Charismatic Center in Houston. Mr. Driscoll was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Driscoll; sisters, Victoria Martinez and Amelia Gonzales; and brothers, Ishmael Driscoll and David Driscoll.
A rosary was recited Sunday evening at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held on Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Alicia Driscoll of Houston; daughters, Angelique Luera of Houston, Carolyn Luna of Sugar Land and Emma Martinez of Freeport; sisters, Mary Rodriguez of Boling, Alice Yanez and Carolyn Driscoll, both of Houston; brother, Fidel Driscoll of Needville; grandchildren; Carlos Driscoll, Armando Enriquez, Damien Luera, Monica and Gabriel Luna, Ernest Martinez, Elaine Mallory, Elizabeth Davis and Elisa Martinez; and great-grandson, Ethan Davis.
Pallbearers were Carlos R. Driscoll, Edward Gonzales, Fidel Driscoll Jr., Rudy Ramirez Jr., Richard Martinez and Steven Driscoll.

Elizabeth Koch
Elizabeth Anne “Liz” Krenek Koch, age 50, of Wharton died Saturday, Feb. 19 , 2005, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 21, 1955, in Wharton the daughter of the late George Paul Krenek Jr. and Vlasta Albina Zahn Krenek.
Mrs. Koch was reared in Egypt and graduated from Hungerford High School in 1973. She also graduated form Lamar University in Beaumont. Mrs. Koch married Richard Lynn Koch on June 15, 1985, in Hungerford. She was a former teacher for 15 years at the Louise Junior High School and has been a teacher and coach for the past 13 and one-half years at Needville Junior High School in Needville. Mrs. Koch was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford, the Catholic Daughters and the St. John’s Altar Society. She was a member of the Needville Band Boosters, Phi Theta Kappa and Delta Psi Kappa sororities and the Referees Volleyball Association. Mrs. Koch also taught CCD at St. John’s Catholic Church for 12 years.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Cremation will follow.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Koch and daughter, Amber Leigh Koch, both of Wharton; step-son, Matt Colin Koch of Austin; sister, Mary Louise Krenek of Stafford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tim and Phyllis Krenek of Egypt, Mark and Pam Krenek and Gerard and Theresa Krenek, all of Wharton. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers will be Travis Krenek, Jonathan Krenek, Brent Acuff, Brett Acuff, Matt Koch and Kyle Koch.
Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her godchildren, K.K. Truitt, Daniel Hunziker, Valerie Woodruff, Colleen Krenek, Cassie Baudry and all of the Needville Junior High School teachers and staff.

Edward Turner
Funeral services for Edward Charles Turner, 65, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Crematory. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home.
Mr. Turner died Feb. 17, 2005, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home. He was born May 24, 1939, in Wharton to the late John Monroe Turner and Willie Mae Mayberry.
He was a retired laborer.
Survivors include spouse Thelma Lee Taylor Turner; mother, Willie Mae Mayberry; daughters, Teresa Woods and Charlotte McGrew; sons, Edward Charles Turner Jr., Troy Richardson, Marvin Holmes and Harvey Lee Phynon; siblings, Jack Bennett, Kenneth Bennett, Ray Turner, Nicey Ramsey, Hurvie Lee Ramsey and Madeline Walker; 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Norma Westerman
Norma Kathryn Sipe Westerman, 61, former resident of Wharton, passed away Feb. 18, 2005, in Houston.
She is survived by her husband, Chuck Westerman of Houston; daughter, Julie Stovall and her husband Mike of Houston; son, Lane Westerman of San Marcos; mother, Loraine Sipe of Houston; grandsons, Chance and Collin Stovall; sisters, Phyllis Truex of The Woodlands, Barbara Hogberg of Pasadena, Calif., and Annelle Mehaffey of San Antonio; brothers, Gary Sipe of Waller, Brooks Sipe of Pasadena; and numerous other relatives.
Visitation was held at 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at the Klein Funeral Home in Houston. Interment was at 2 p.m. at the Coshatte Cemetery in Bellville.

Bennie Hood
Bennie Ray Hood, 64, of Bay City, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Houston. He was born March 5, 1941, in Plainview, to Homer Lawrence Hood and Alma Jane Walker Hood.
He was a resident of Bay City since 1999 and was a retired carpenter from Phillips 66 in Old Ocean.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Eloise Hood of Bay City; his sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Paula Hood and Brandon and Shelby Hood of Bay City; and two grandchildren, Braeden Hood and Jase Hood of Bay City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Alma Hood; his sister, Bobbie Jo Morrison; and his brother, Dewey Clydean Hood.
Funeral service were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Bay City with Rev. Michael Zimmerman officiating.
Pallbearers were Ed Knight, Bobby Smith, Doyle Keith, Chad Yaklin, Felix Cruz and Kenny Pucket.
Honorary Pallbearers were all the carpenters of Conoco-Phillips and Chevron-Phillips.

George Shoppa
George Shoppa, age 76, of Wharton died Monday, April 25, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Feb. 22, 1929, in Wharton, the son of the late Adolph Shoppa Sr. and Christina Tracy Keller Shoppa.
Mr. Shoppa had been a longtime resident of Wharton and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He married Josephine S. Moeller on Sept. 19, 1950, in Wharton and she preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1998. Mr. Shoppa was also preceded in death by a sister, Nollie Socha. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired on Dec. 31, 1969. Mr. Shoppa was a member of the American Legion Post No. 87 and the Wharton V.F.W. Following his active duty service he went to work for the railroad as an electrician. He was a coin collector and an avid bowler. Mr. Shoppa enjoyed making numerous trips to Las Vegas. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Wharton.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Graveside service followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.
Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice Sliva of Bay City, Loraine Anders of Wharton, Betty Ann and Raymond Shindler of Nacogdoches and Shirley and Ron Swinford of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Adolph and Kay Shoppa and Lloyd and Betty Jean Shoppa, all of Wharton; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Jim Shoppa, Chris Shoppa, Joey Sliva, Larry Shoppa, Ronnie Shoppa and Edward Socha.
Honorary Pallbearers were Perry Young, Ronnie Swinford, Freddie Siska and all members of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton and the Wharton V.F.W.

James Stafford
James Wilburn Stafford, age 76, of Boling died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in a Richmond hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 1, 1928, in Fairfax, Ala., the son of the late Jesse Dennis Stafford Sr. and Alvie Lee Carmack Stafford.
Mr. Stafford had been a resident of Boling since 1959 and was the athletic director and coach for many years at Boling Independent School District. He was the middle school athletic coordinator at Sweeny I.S.D. for 10 years. Mr. Stafford was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He married Annie Alice Riley on Aug. 21, 1952, in Meridian, Miss. Mr. Stafford was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wharton, Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a board member of the ARC in Wharton and a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.
He graduated from Southwest Texas State University and received his master’s degree in physical education from Prairie View A&M University. Mr. Stafford started his teaching career in Pettus in 1957 coaching football, baseball and track and won the regional championship in baseball. In 1972 his football team won the State 2A Championship and he was honored as Texas High School Coach of the Year in 1972 in all classifications. During his teaching career he taught driver’s education, biology and physical education. Mr. Stafford coached basketball, football, baseball and volleyball, boys and girls track and golf. His girls golf team placed second in the state in 1980. He also taught swimming for many years in Boling.
Friends may call for visitation after 5 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005, at Wharton Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with Rev. Debbi Cenko officiating. military graveside honors will be provided by American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at the Boling High School Gym in Boling.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Stafford of Boling; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John E. Melton of Edna; grandchildren, Lea Elizabeth Melton and John Douglas Melton.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Ella Matthews and Katherine Stafford and a brother Jesse Dennis Stafford Jr.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Crabb, J.B. Johse, A.C. Shelton, Jim Williams, Bill McGonagle, Bobby Pyssen, Ronnie Krejci, David Brehm and Pete Kucera.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Merrill “Doc” Barfield, Bert Davis, all members of the Boling Lions Club and all faculty and staff of the Boling I.S.D. and Sweeny I.S.D.
