Roy Mendiola
Roy Raul Mendiola Sr., age 49, of Wharton, died March 1, 2004, in Wharton. He was born on June 4, 1954, in Newgulf, the son of the Frank Mendiola Sr. and Maria Zavala Mendiola.
Mr. Mendiola had been a resident of Wharton County all of his life. He married Diane Valdez on May 26, 1972, in Wharton. Mr. Mendiola worked as a foreman with Protherm Services in Freeport for the past 3 years. He was preceded in death by his father.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Mendiola officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Mendiola of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law Tina and Eduvi Garza of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Tanya Mendiola Jr., Bruce Lee and Tracy Mendiola, Scott Mendiola and Duran and Christan Mendiola, all of Wharton; mother, Maria Z. Mendiola of McAllen; sisters, Sandra Mendiola and Rose Mary Mendiola, both of Houston, and Jessica Mendiola and Jane Mendiola, both of McAllen; brothers Frank Mendiola of Wharton, Ray Mendiola and Ruben Mendiola, both of Houston; grandchildren, Roy Christopher and Madison Mendiola, Skye Marie and Allison Garza, Cecelie Yvette and Fabian Mendiola, Scott Mendiola Jr. and Jazlyn Mendiola.
Pallbearers were Roy Mendiola Jr., Bruce Mendiola, Duran Mendiola, Frank Mendiola Jr., Eduvi Garza, Johnnie Orta Sr. and Roy Christopher Mendiola.
Honorary pallbearers were Ron Majors, John NeSmith Sr., John NeSmith Jr., Henry Gusman, Richard DeLaRosa and Vincent Alvarado.

James Moore
Funeral services for James Moore, 56, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Kendleton Missionary Baptist Church The Temple of Glory with Rev. Alfred Banks officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.
Mr. Moore died March 3, 2004, at his residence. He was born Aug. 14, 1947, in Wharton to Willie and Virgie Payne Moore.
Survivors include mother and father, Willie and Virgie Payne Moore of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Tawanda and Claudis Johnson of El Campo; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Wilma Moore of Wharton; brother-in-law, Johnny Sanders of Wharton; and two grandchildren.

Bob Richards
Funeral services for Bob Richards Sr., 57, of Kendleton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Little Zion Jerusalem Baptist Church with Rev. C. Drayden officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Bowden Cemetery.
Mr. Richards died March 3, 2004, at his residence. He was born June 21, 1946, in Wharton to Willie and Willie Richards Ray.
Survivors include, mother, Willie Richards of Houston; wife, Emma Jean Spears Richards of Beasley; sons, Bob Richards Jr. and Damen Richards, both of Beasley; daughter, Tamika Charles of Houston; brothers, A.L. Joseph Talafuse
Joseph Peter Talafuse Sr., age 86, of East Bernard, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in a Richmond hospital following an extended illness. He was born on March 18, 1917, in Austin County, the son of the late Peter Thomas Talafuse and Pauline Kosik Talafuse.
Mr. Talafuse was a former longtime resident of Victoria before moving back to East Bernard in 1997. He married Lillie Lepik on June 4, 1946, in Wharton. While living in Victoria, Mr. Talafuse was employed as a electronics technician with the Victoria Sears Roebuck Store for 15 years before opening his own business, City Radio and Stereo, in Victoria. He retired in 1965. Mr. Talafuse was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and American Legion Post in Needville. He enjoyed tinkering in his workshop and fishing.
Funeral mass services were held 2 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Interment followed in Holy Cross Cemetery. Rosary services were held Thursday evening at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie Talafuse of East Bernard; daughter, Cathy Casdorph Mitchell and husband, Billy, of Orange Beach, Ala.; son, Joe Peter Talafuse Jr. and wife, Jana, of Rosenberg; sisters, Mary Ann Kainer of El Campo, Annie Glasser of Sugar Land and Elsie Moch of Houston; grandchildren, Chris Watkins, Jennifer Casdorph, Amy Casdorph, Amanda Talafuse, Joseph Talafuse III and Reba Talafuse. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Josephine Talafuse; sisters, Dorothy Andrejczak, Katie Brandl and Elizabeth Laxton; and a brother, Peter Talafuse.
Pallbearers were Joseph Talafuse III, James Talafuse, Billy Mitchell, Chris Watkins, Eddie Zahradnik and Jeff Andrejczak.
Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Kainer and Richard Zahradnik.

Carrie Temple
Funeral services for Carrie M. Temple, 100, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at St. Stephen’s Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Kemper Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pilgrim Cemetery.
Mrs. Temple died March 3, 2004, at her residence. She was born Aug. 15, 1903, in Wharton to Mark and Louzia Warren Ward.
Survivors include sons, Lavern Jack Temple of Wharton and L.C. Temple of Houston; daughters, Valerie Thomas, Eugenia Trahan and Shirley T. Lott, all of Houston, and Lena Temple of Wharton; 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 54 great-great-grandchildren.

Isabel DeLeon
Funeral services for Isabel DeLeon, age 78 of Wharton, were held Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Thursday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. DeLeon died April 26, 2004, in a local hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on Jan. 22, 1926, in Mackay, the daughter of the late Rosendo Escobedo and Feliciana Orosco Escobedo.
She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Wharton. Mrs. DeLeon married Abundio Miniel on Sept. 16, 1944, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1952. She later met and married Fedencio DeLeon on August 20, 1981, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 1983. Mrs. DeLeon was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Felipe Cortez of Abilene, Janie M. Garza of Wharton, Lucy and Guadalupe Mata, Virginia and Israel, Isabel Mata and Betty Zavala, all of Wharton and Esther and Jose Zavala of Lake Jackson; sisters, Ramona Valdez of Surprise, Ariz., Betty Alaniz of Torrance, Calif., Julia Gonzales of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., and Christine Gurule of Torrance, Calif.; brothers, Pedro Escobedo of Surprise, Ariz., and Guadalupe Escobedo of Arizona; 26 grandchildren and t26 great-grandchildren.
Mae Evans
Funeral services for Mae Ella Evans, 60, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Lyons Unity Missionary Baptist Church in Houston with Rev. W.A. Jordan officiating.
Mrs. Evans died April 27, 2004, at Triumph Healthcare after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 30, 1943, in Wharton.
She married Percy Evans of Houston and was a member of Lyons Unity Baptist Church for more than 20 years.
Survivors include mother, Annie M. Ford of Wharton; sons, Rodney, Kevin and Demond Evans of Wharton; granddaughter, Ferrari Evans of Wharton; aunts, Irma Warren, Hazel Sanders and Mittie Bailey, all of Wharton; uncle, Fred Sanders of Bastrop; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Vallie Faulker
Graveside services for Vallie Datel Faulkner, 75, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at East Gate Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. Visitation will he held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday prior to service time at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Mrs. Faulkner died April 29, 2004, at Green Acres in Baytown after an extended illness. She was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Lampasas to the late James Samuel and Ester Wall Chambliss.
She was a longtime resident of Dayton before moving to Wharton 30vears ago. While living in Dayton Mrs. Faulkner worked for Dayton Independent School District, was a member of the PTA and the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband Frank Datel and later married Kenneth Faulker, who also preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her sister, Prebble Melton. After moving to Wharton she was a member of the Senior Friends of Wharton and active in a bowling league.
Survivors include her sons, Jimmy Datel and wife Jodie of Dayton and Sam Datel of Atascocita; step-daughter, Rachel Faulkner; brother, James Kenneth Chambliss of Lake Mary, Fla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rex and Mary Mayfield of Longview, Louis and Pris Datel of Lafayette, La., John and Dean Datel of San Antonio, John and Louise Adams of Dayton, Julia and Buster Ripkowski of Dayton, Tom and Grace Faulkner of Victoria and Stephen Faulkner of Marlin.
Clyde Hensley
Clyde Wayne Hensley, age 75, of Wharton, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in Richmond. He was born on Aug. 23, 1928, in El Campo, the son of the late Otto and Jewel Neeley Hensley.
Mr. Hensley graduated from Wharton High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952 and later served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Hensley married Mary Ann Zubicek on Nov. 19, 1953, in Wharton. He was employed as an electrician by Texasgulf Sulfur Company until his retirement in 1986. He was a former youth baseball and softball coach and member of the Lions Club. Mr. Hensley was a lifelong resident of Wharton and enjoyed drinking coffee and visiting with his many friends.
Following cremation, memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Doyle officiating. A private family interment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Hensley of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Hensley Wood and husband, Robert, of Santa Fe and Nancy Sakellaridis and husband, Travis, of Brazoria; son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Patricia Hensley of Austin; sister, Eunice Studeny of Port Neches; and granddaughters, Melody Sakellaridis, Sheri Kucera and Denise Wood.
Honorary pallbearers were his coffee drinking buddies.

Funeral services for Maggie Adelle Little, 98, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Ms. Little died April 30, 2004, in Wharton.
Maria Tijerina
Funeral services for Maria E. Tijerina, 84, of Wharton will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call for visitation after 6 p.m. Sunday the funeral home and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Tijerina died April 29, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness.
Astrid Williams
Astrid Agnes Jensen Williams, age 80, of Wharton died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land following a sudden illness. She was born on Nov. 16, 1923, in Danevang, the daughter of the late Anker Jensen and Bessie Marie Treumer Jensen.
Mrs. Williams had been a resident of Wharton since 1947 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in El Campo. he graduated from El Campo High School and then graduated from the Lilly Jolly School of Nursing at the University of Houston in 1946. Mrs. Williams then moved to Abilene and worked as the head nurse at St. Ann’s Hospital for one year. She married Cyrus Paul Williams on Aug. 3, 1947, in Abilene and he preceded her in death on March 6, 2002. Mrs. Williams was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Skow and Ellen Skow, and a brother, Chester Jensen. She moved to Wharton in 1947 where she worked in various nursing positions until her retirement in 1986.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Danevang Lutheran Cemetery in Danevang and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Gould officiating.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Nancy Yuill and Dr. Richard Yuill of Sugar Land and Evelyn and Tony Simmons of Chicago, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald Williams and wife Suzie of San Antonio; sisters, Edith Gann and Marie Meek both of El Campo; grandchildren, Kevin Bennett, Jennifer Bennett, Lori Yuill, Megan Yuill, Paul Williams and Elizabeth Williams and great-grandchildren Cassandra Bennett and Avery Paul Williams.

Dorothy Kucera
Dorothy Kucera, age 69, of Wharton, died Friday, July 16, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 2, 1934 in Fort Bend County, the daughter of the late Paul Dominic Kosik and Matilda Wetz Kosik.
Mrs. Kucera had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters, the KJZT and the SPJST. Mrs. Kucera married Ervin Martin Kucera on Aug. 26, 1953, in East Bernard. She was a graduate of East Bernard High School. Mrs. Kucera worked in accounts receivable at the Wharton County Courthouse for 22 years until her retirement on March 31, 1997. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul R. Kosik, and a son-in-law, Danny Malota. She enjoyed traveling and playing slot machines.
A rosary was recited at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
Survivors include her husband, Ervin Kucera; a daughter, Denice Malota and a son, Ervin A. “Bo” Kucera and Krista Spano, all of Wharton; sister, Joyce Randolph of Wharton and a brother, Daniel Kosik of Wallis. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers were Glenn Kosik, Myrvle Lindberg, Frank Hlavinka, Larry Jenkins, Charles Havemann and Pete Kucera.
