Mrs. Bailey was born Sept. 19, 1925, in Elkhart to Jacob and Virgie Matthews.
She had lived in the Cherokee County area most of her life. She was a member of Corinth Road Church of Christ.
Mrs. Bailey's nursing career spanned 35 years, having worked in this area for the entire length. She began working at the Nan Travis Memorial Hospital in 1963. Mrs. Bailey also was one of the original nurses chosen to open the first intensive care unit at Nan Travis Hospital. Another highlight of her career was co-founding and being co-partner of East Texas Home Health Agency for 10 years before slowing down and spending the rest of her career in the nursing home field.
Her three greatest joys in life were her nursing, her church and her family. There was never a person she met or one of her children brought home that needed food, shelter or medical care that she didn't provide. She never acquired great riches or wealth because of this, but she raised children who were dedicated to her day and night until her death. God's riches were waiting for her when He called her home. That is her legacy. May we all live up to it and be the kind of person Winnie Bailey was. She will be greatly missed by many.

Leonard of Jacksonville; a daughter, Susan Graham and husband, Rodger Graham of Jacksonville; a sister, Flora Jean Harrison of Malakoff; granddaughter and husband, Tina Baggett and Richard Baggett of Gallatin; great-granddaughter and great-grandson, Jayanna and Jason Baggett of Gallatin; grandson and wife, Keith and Crystal Priestly of Berryville; grandson, Anthony Priestly of Jacksonville; grandson and wife, Berl and Tammy Schmitz of Houston; great-grandsons, Reed and Rhett Schmitz of Houston; sister-in-law, Lula Matthews of Palestine; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, brothers and sisters in Christ.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
