Royal Byars ‘R.B.’ Cravey
Nov. 15, 1930 — Jan. 4, 2001

JEWETT — Services for Royal Byars “R.B.” Cravey, 70, of Marquez are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Ephesus Baptist Church in Jewett.

Bro. Ray Payne of Ephesus Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Marquez Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Ricks Funeral Home in Jewett.

Mr. Cravey died Thursday in Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler.

He was born in Concord, Texas, and lived in Marquez since 1984. He was a former resident of Bakersfield, Calif., and was a Baptist. He was a member of the Jewett Masonic Lodge No. 427.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Cravey of Marquez; a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Jamie Padgett of Marquez; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kim Cravey of Marquez; two brothers, James W. Cravey of Jewett and Bobby Jack Cravey of Marquez; two sisters, Ruby Lee Speer of Concord and Imogene Posey of Centerville; and two grandchildren.

Garrett Henry Gaskamp
Dec. 23, 1916 — Jan. 5, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Garrett Henry Gaskamp, 84, of Brenham are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill.

The Rev. Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mr. Gaskamp died Friday in a Houston hospital.

He was born in the Prairie Hill community of Washington County and served three years in the U.S. Army 44th Division in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill, where he served on the council. He was a salesman for Pioneer Flour Mills and was retired from the Washington County Road and Bridge Department and was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam Gaskamp of Brenham; a son, Gary Wayne Gaskamp of Gay Hill; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Rueben Gaskamp, Louis and Loretta Gaskamp and Perry and Rosa Lee Gaskamp; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearl and Melvin Hugo and Betty Lou and Roland Lueckemeyer; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Charlie and Gladys Steinfield, Lillian Payne and Floy Steinbach, both of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Gay Hill Building Fund.

Dorothy Nell Harrington
May 28, 1928 — Jan. 4, 2001

NORMANGEE — Services for Dorothy Nell Harrington, 72, of Mexia, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Flynn Baptist Church in Flynn, Texas.

Bro. Ross Newton of the Flynn Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Creek Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Cozart Funeral Home in Normangee.

Mrs. Harrington died Thursday in the Haven Nursing Home in Mexia.

She was a member of the Flynn Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Harrington of Mexia; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Don and Beth Harrington of Kingwood, Texas, Mike Harrington of Houston and Kenneth Harrington of Huntsville, Texas; two brothers, Roger Brooks of Magnolia, Texas, and Starling Harold Brooks of Flynn; five sisters, Lucy Cobb, Angie Duncan and Ophelia Walker, all of Flynn, Etta Hearron of Centerville and Jean Watson of Marquez; and two grandchildren.

Amelia Rose Johnson
June 29, 1925 — Jan. 5, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Amelia Rose Johnson, 75, of Houston are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Anderson.

The Rev. Louis S. Sikorski of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Johnson died Friday in Tomball, Texas.

She was born in Dayton, Texas, and was a cashier at the Ramada Inn. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Carl Johnson.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Tena Johnson of Montgomery, Texas; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Phillip and Juanita Cone of Dickerson, Texas, and Harold Cone of Onalaska, Texas; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Christine Komincak of Houston, Virginia and Samuel Bova of Kemah, Texas, Helen Kimich and Martha McCleney, both of Anderson; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rubyn Richardson
May 20, 1912 — Jan. 2, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Rubyn Richardson, 88, of Doylne, La., are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Madisonville.

The Rev. Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in West End Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Richardson died Tuesday.

Survivors include a son, Edison Muniz of Madisonville; a sister, Clara Brooks of Houston; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Dena Holden Wheat Pantalion
Sept. 5, 1919 — Jan. 5, 2001

Dena Holden Wheat Pantalion, age 81, of Bryan passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2001, in the St. Joseph Manor. Mrs. Pantalion was born in Poplarville, Mississippi, to George and Corine Holden. Dena moved to Bryan in July of 1953.

She was a long time entrepreneur, owning and operating Perfecto Cleaners and Dena’s Hair Fashions Beauty Shop as well as being a nurse with Hearne General Hospital and was employed with Humana Hospital in College Station until her retirement.

Dena was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church, an active member in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as President of both Auxiliaries and the founder of the local Young at Heart Chapter.
Dena is remembered as a loving, caring mother and grandmother. She took the time to care for many needy friends during their retirement years.

She is preceded in death by a son, Edwin O. Wheat; and husbands, William Otis Wheat and Charles A. Pantalion.

She is survived by one brother, J.D. Holden of Poplarville, Mississippi; a son and daughter-in-law, James O. “Joe” and Norma Kindt Wheat of Spring, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Deloris Faye Wheat and Sam Cook of College Station; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Wheat of Fort Worth, Texas. Nine grandchildren, Edwin O. Wheat Jr. and wife Leah, Wayne Wheat and wife Kathryn, D’Ann Wheat Winslager and husband Leslie, Buck Wheat, Shannon Wheat, Melody Wheat Laughbaum and husband Kyle, Michele Rudasill McNew and husband Kyle, Gardner Rudasill and Shawn Rudasill.
Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hillier Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Hillier Funeral Home with the Reverend David Murphy of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Kurten Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.

Fox Campbell Dowden
Dec. 4, 1904 — Jan. 6, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Fox Campbell Dowden, 96, of Bedias are set for 3 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of Bedias.

The Rev. Vicky Averitt will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mr. Dowden died Saturday.

He was born in Livingston, Texas, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bedias for 40 years. He was a self-taught soil conservationist and received many awards from the state and county on his work in this field. He was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Jim Teer of San Angelo, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Francis Dowden of Houston, Ann Dowden of Sheperd, Texas, and Ruth Dowden of Conroe, Texas; three granddaughters; two nieces; six nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Bedias.

Adrian M. Garcia
June 14, 1900 — Dec. 30, 2000

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. — Services for Adrian M. Garcia, 100, of Casa Grande were held Friday at Simes Mortuaries Casa Grande Chapel.

The Rev. Antonio del Carmen officiated. Burial was in Valley Memorial Park.
Mr. Garcia died Dec. 30.

He was born in Yurecuaro, Mexico, and lived in Arizona since 1924. He lived in Coolidge, Ariz., for many years and worked for 34 years at Southwest Lumber Co. in Flagstaff, Ariz., as a trimmer and grader. He coached Little League, umpired softball and owned two semipro baseball teams, the Corsairs and the Aztecs. He was an ordained Methodist minister and was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista del Sur of Casa Grande.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Garcia.

Survivors include two daughters, Tillie Garcia Picazo of Bryan and Virginia Garcia del Carmen of Arleta, Calif.; three sons, Gilbert Garcia of San Diego, Raul Garcia of Coolidge and Adrian Garcia Jr. of Whittier, Calif.; a sister, Juanita Garcia of Yurecuaro; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Harold Dean Griffin
Oct. 11, 1922 — Jan. 5, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Graveside services for Harold Dean Griffin, 78, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Madisonville City Cemetery.

The Rev. Dean Ferguson will officiate.

Visitation will be held graveside prior to the services Monday.

Arrangements are under the direction of J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville.
Mr. Griffin died Friday at his home.

He was born in El Paso and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked as a TAG Plant Supervisor for 20 years for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in El Paso and the Optimist International.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Barrett Griffin.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Louise Griffin of Bryan and David and Becky Griffin of Baytown, Texas; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Eunice Maude Hill
Nov. 13, 1904 — Jan. 5, 2001

CENTERVILLE — Graveside services for Eunice Maude Hill, 96, of Centerville are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Centerville City Cemetery.

The Rev. Charles White of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Mrs. Hill died Friday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center in Madisonville.
She was born in east Leon County and lived in Centerville for 69 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, was a charter member of the Centerville Chapter No. 1002 Order of the Eastern Star and was a former Leon County district clerk. She owned and operated the first flower shop in Leon County, the Centerville Flower Shop, from 1952 to 1988. The Eunice community of Leon County was named after her by her father and she was the last living member of the Leon County Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion of World War I.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. “Bill” Hill; and a daughter, Winona Hill.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Julia Hill of Crockett, Texas; a daughter, Essie Hines of Centerville; a sister, Olli Belle Biggs of Buna, Texas; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Martha Schumacher Kelm
Jan. 12, 1916 — Jan. 6, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Martha Schumacher Kelm, 84, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

The Rev. Jennifer Grant will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Mrs. Kelm died Saturday in Brenham Rest Home.

She was born in the Zionsville community of Washington County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert G. Kelm.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Janice Kelm of Burton; a sister, Elsie Schumacher of Rosenberg, Texas; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

William Gerald Lucey Jr.
March 13, 1943 — Jan. 4, 2001

Services for William Gerald Lucey Jr., 57, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Joseph Frazier will officiate. Burial will be in Houston National Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
Mr. Lucey died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Fort Worth and lived in Bryan for most of his life. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1966 and was a projectionist for Schulman Theatres. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, John S. and Maureen Lucey of Houston; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patricia and George Burks and Marjorie Lucey, all of Houston; two nieces; and numerous cousins.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840-2811.
