Vallie Mae Godfrey

Vallie Mae Godfrey, 89, of Austin, passed away Friday, July 18. She was born Sept. 7, 1913 in Palestine to Fount Lee and Maude Morris.
Vallie was valedictorian of her graduating class at Palestine High School. She also was head librarian for several years while living in Crystal City.
She married Thomas H. Godfrey on May 30, 1935, in Palestine.
Vallie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was greatly loved and will be missed. Vallie was very giving and always there for her family and friends.
She was a member of the Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; one brother; and her husband.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia G. Oxford and husband Emory of Fair Oaks Ranch; son, H. Lee Godfrey and wife Sandy of Houston; grandson, Thomas Oxford of Beaumont; granddaughters, Teresa Oxford and Diana Oxford, both of San Antonio, Lindsey Summers of Seattle; great-grandchildren, Brett Oxford, Ryan Oxford, Ciarra Oxford, Coleman Oxford, Isabel Oxford and Thomas Summers.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Sunday July 20, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville.
In lieu of floral contributions, the family requests memorials be made in Mrs. Godfrey's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Association of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cook Walden Funeral Home, Austin.

Mr. Barnett died Saturday at his residence.

Nancy E. Muse Taylor

Services for Nancy E. Muse Taylor, 87, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Revs. Robert L. Franklin, Tommy L. Calhoun and R.C. Emanuel officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mrs. Taylor died Sunday at MYA Health Care following a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 15, 1916 in Anderson County, the eighth of nine children born to Lewis and Celia Beason Muse.
Mrs. Taylor was a member of Mount Vernon A.M.E. Church since 1938 and during that time she served as a trustee, Sunday school teacher and president and stewardess of the Women's Missionary Society.
She was a very active member of the Anderson County Historical Commission, the Negro Historical Preservation Society and the Anderson County Preservation Society. She worked tirelessly doing extensive research documenting the history of Mount Vernon A.M.E. Church. As a result of her efforts, the church is recorded in the Texas Historical Landmark, a local landmark and a National Register Property of Historic Places.
Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; sisters and brothers; and her husband, George F. Taylor.
She is survived by sons, Jesse L. Taylor and Joann of Dallas, James J. Taylor and Azalean of Palestine, Lewis E. Taylor and Geraldine of Houston, and Kenneth E. Taylor and Pamela of Moreno Valley, Calif; daughters, Alma J. Paris of Dallas, Ruby J. Deadmon and Lee of Dallas and Bernadine Taylor of Palestine; an adopted daughter, Mary Birdow of Palestine; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Fred DeCluette, Ronnie Evans, Charles Muse, Clarence Muse, Edward Muse and James Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be Vernon Denmon, Jim Evans, Albert Gilbert, Newell B. Kane, Jimmy Odom, Hugh Russell, Chester Thomas and Gary Williams.
Condolence calls will be received from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Services for Viola Blanche Morrison Kageler, 74, of Grapeland will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Grapeland with the Rev. David Bradley officiating. Burial will follow in Augusta Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mrs. Kageler died Tuesday at Lady of The Lakes Hospital in Baton Rouge, La.

Patrick Tate "Cannon" Dyess

Patrick Tate "Cannon" Dyess, 29, died at Brenham State School.
He was born June 23, 1974 in Houston to Pat Cannon Dyess and Dean Dyess.
Mr. Dyess moved to Palestine in 1980. He attended Palestine schools and graduated in 1995.
He was a member of Christ Community Church. He enjoyed Special Olympics and summer camp. His hobbies were movies and music. He loved to talk, laugh and dance.
More important than his achievements was his unconditional love for his family. In return he was dearly loved by family and friends.
Mr. Dyess moved to Brenham State School in May 2003. He was employed at Blue Bell Creameries. Patrick was an excellent worker and loved his job.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Pet and Jim Cannon, and Bill and Avis Dyess; uncle, Jack Cannon.
Mr. Dyess is survived by his mother, Pat Cannon; father, Dean Dyess of Buffalo; brother, Darrell Cannon; sister-in-law, Jodi "Eady" Cannon; nieces, Kayla, Kara, Katelyn and Kortney Cannon and Danielle McClinton of Oakwood; and loving niece, Ember Gentry of Gatesville.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Christ Community Church with the Rev. Robert Roper officiating.

Milton Marshall Evans

Services for Milton Marshall Evans, 76, of Cleburne will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Cleburne Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Charles Payne and David Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow at Baker-Lain Cemetery in Johnson County.
Mr. Evans died Friday in Fort Worth.
He was born Nov. 9, 1927 in Dallas, to Roy Lee Evans and Susan Pearl Branch Evans.
Mr. Evans married Juanita Fillip in 1975 in Galveston.
He formerly lived in Palestine for 40 years. He enjoyed golf, singing in area nursing homes and participating in "The Promise" in Glen Rose. At the time of his death he was employed by the Morgan Texas School District. He graduated from the Institute of Radio Broadcasting in Dallas in 1948. His first job was in Jasper at KTXJ Radio. Then he worked at KLTI in Longview until 1954 when he became a partner at KNET Radio in Palestine. He sold his interest in KNET in 1968 and established an insurance agency in Palestine. He operated the insurance agency until his retirement in 1989. He served in the Merchant Marines and Navy during World War II and was a Shriner.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his sister Mona Worley.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Evans of Cleburne; sons, Marshall Duane Evans and wife Deb of Forney, George Fillip of Joshua, Danny Fillip and wife Kristy of Palestine; daughters, Kim Conner and husband Russell of Mexia, Kelli Frasier and husband Vince of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; brothers, Duane Evans of Washington, D.C., Chene Evans of Reddings, Calif., John Evans of Bosier City, La.; sisters, Vera Holder and Myra Johnston of Granbury and Zane Mentor of Midlothian.
Pallbearers will be Joe Lain, Ray Sanders, Dr. Jack Thompson, Carlton Crook, Buddy Brock, Wayne Turbyfill and Bob Miller. Honorary pallbearer will be J. W. Adams.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
