Fannie Fae Brown passed away Sunday, July 28. She was a graduate of Bonham High School, East Texas State Teachers College and UTEP. She was a teacher in the Texas schools for 41 years, including 31 years in the Ysleta Independent School District where she was a kindergarten teacher and a supervisor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer L. Brown. She is survived by her nephew, David Little of Dallas, and by her longtime friend, Evelyn Vernon of El Paso. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Marian S. Adkins passed away Sunday, July 28. She was born in Hoboken, N.J., and raised in Union City. She served in the military from June 7, 1945, through July 9, 1948, with service in the European Theater of Operations in Italy and was the recipient of several commendations. After her service in the Women’s Army Corps, she attended college in New York City, and began a civil service career in 1951. For most of her career, she was assigned to Fort Bliss. She received several awards during her time in civil service, and retired in 1982 after 31 years of service.
She loved roller skating, receiving several medals in competition. She also enjoyed square dancing and swimming.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Eugene E. Adkins; her daughter, Jeanne Wagner; and by her grandson, Stephen J. Wagner. Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to any cancer research fund. Janie S. Huston passed away Saturday, July 27. She was a foster mother for Lee and Beulah Moor Children’s Home for over 20 years and cared for 134 children. She is survived by her husband, Robert Huston; her mother, Billie Van Huss; her sons, Robert Huston Jr. and James Huston; by her daughter, Jennifer Huston; three grandchildren; her brother, Jerry Van Huss and her sister, Tanya Johnson. Interment took place in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lee and Beulah Moor Children’s Home, or Zion Lutheran Church.

Duane Kelly “Kell” Benortham passed away Saturday, July 27. He graduated from Crowley County High School, and returned to El Paso in 1980, taking a civil service position at Fort Bliss. He became a self-employed truck driver, and worked for Mesilla Valley Trucking.
He is survived by his mother, Vera Benortham of Chaparral, N.M.; his father and stepmother, Doyle and Joyce Benortham; his brothers, Don, Daryl, Doyle Dean and wife Jo Ann, Dolan and step-brother Kyle Bryan of Albuquerque; his niece, Katrina Benortham; and nephews Daniel, Dennis, Dorin and David Benortham, all of El Paso. Interment took place in Restlawn Memorial Park.

Colonel (Ret) William Donovan Ziler passed away Tuesday, July 30. He was born in Big Spring, Texas, and was a lifelong resident of El Paso with the exception of the 30 years he spent in the military. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and served most of his military career in the Army Airborne. He was one of the planners of the famous Airborne Assault in the retaking of Corregidor Island in the Pacific during WWII. His overseas assignments included El Salvador, Panama, Japan and Turkey. He also served at Fort Bragg, N.C., in several capacities in the 82nd Airborne Division, 18th Airborne Corps, and in Army Airborne Research and Development at Fort Monroe, Va. He was a member of the 503rd Airborne RCT Association, the Retired Officers Association and the Cavalry Association. During his career, he received the Legion of Merit award, the Bronze star, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Master Parachutists Badge, a Commendation Ribbon, an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, an American Defense Medal, a WWII Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
He is survived by his longtime friend, Ursula Cottle of El Paso; his brother, Doyle Ziler of Dell City; his three daughters, Diane McConnell of Little Rock, Ark.; Jeanie Calhoun of Roanoke, Va., and Sally Ettlinger of Lilncolnshire, Ill.; grandchildren Darcy McConnell of San Antonio; Dan Morgan of Dallas, Katie Ettlinger, Jake Ettlinger and Kelsey Ettlinger, all of Chicago; nieces Patty Attel of El Paso and Mary Fleming of Dell City and nephew Donny Callison of Dell City. Joseph William “Bill” Bombach passed away Friday, July 26. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a UTEP graduate. He was a commercial real estate broker throughout the southwest, and a member of the El Paso Board of Realtors. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
He is survived by his mother Adalberta (Nena) Bombach; his brothers, John Bombach, Rick Mojica, Peter Bombach, Larry Bombach and John Switzer; his sisters, Mary Mojica, Veronica Switzer, Beverly Bombach and Eunice Bombach; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Interment took place at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Kate Blaugrund passed away Saturday, Aug. 3. She had lived in El Paso for over 50 years, and was an active life member of Hadassah, B’Nai Zion Sisterhood, the National Council of Jewish Women and Congregation B’Nai Zion. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Maurice Blaugrund and Sidney Peckman, and by her sister, Sarah Cohen. Kenneth D. Jones, a longtime El Paso area farmer and businessman, passed away in Ruidoso Downs, N.M., on Friday, Aug. 2. He owned and operated J&S Auto Parts for over 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Fort Hancock Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He served as a steward of the Fort Hancock Methodist Church, on the Hudspeth County Board of Reclamation and on the Fort Hancock School Board for many years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernice Jones; his son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Nancy Ann Jones of El Paso; daughters Nancy Williams and Karen Jones; grandchildren Kelly Mulvey, Leslie Gwinn, Kristina Jones, Susan Kester, Tim Morton, Karrie Melendrez and Joe Mathis; and six great-grandchildren. Interment took place at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Mary Ann Wardy Smith passed away Friday, Aug. 2. She was a native El Pasoan, and was involved with the Coldwell and Austin High School PTAs, St. Joseph’s Church and the El Paso Women’s Dental Auxiliary. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Zearl W. Smith; her parents, Daher and Rhamey Wardy; sister Ruby Wardy; and her brothers, Abie Wardy, Jimmy Wardy and Joe Wardy. LCDR Alfred Joseph “Joe” Carpenter, USNR (Ret) of El Paso, formerly of Pecos, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, at White Acres Nursing Home in El Paso. He was born in El Paso on Oct. 13, 1916, and graduated from El Paso High School and Texas College of Mines. He worked for Fabens Motor Company and McCormac Tractor and Implement Company. He served aboard the U.S.S. Murphy DD-603 during the invasion of Normandy, including the bombardment of Cherbourg in June 1944. He moved to Pecos in the early 1950s, where he owned the Ginger Blue Ranch until the early 1970s. He also worked for the Texas Employment Commission, where he was manager from 1963 to 1978. In Pecos, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the American Legion, the Pecos Gun and Rifle Club and Leroy’s Coffee Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ninya and Joseph Carpenter; his father-in-law, Jim McCormac; his wife of 56 years, Marion McCormac Carpenter; and his daughter, Linda Carpenter Faulkner.
He is survived by his brother, Andrew H. Carpenter; his daughter, Nancy Tyler, and her husband, Harry Tyler; his grandchildren, Christopher Tyler and Natalee Tyler; and by his huskies, Rio, Fresca and Presley.
Interment took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Bernardo S. Gonzales passed away Sunday, Aug. 11. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso, and a U.S. Army WWII veteran. He was wounded while serving in the Army Cavalry Division. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Isabel Gonzales, his sons, Bernardo Gonzales Jr., Alfredo Gonzales, George Gonzales, James Gonzales and Edward Gonzales; daughters, Christina Pickett and Annette Davila; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burdette (Bud) Lee Wilcox passed away Monday, Aug. 12. He graduated from El Paso High School in 1939, and served his country for six years in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Machinist Mate. He served in the South Pacific in WWII. After his time in the armed forces, he entered the automotive business with his father, Guy Earl.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Casciano Wilcox; children, Burdette Lee Wilcox Jr.; Bonnie Lee Matuz and Scott Lee Wilcox; and six grandchildren: John, Daniel, Jared, Danica and David Matuz and Drake Wilcox. Sheryl A. Scott passed away on Monday, Aug. 12. Originally from Concordia, Kan., she was a longtime resident of El Paso. As a certified public accountant, she was the president of Oxford Professional Services, P.C., and the chief financial officer for TABCON Inc.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Clarence and Alma Fleming. John Robert Daniel
John Robert Daniel, 53, marketing coordinator and DECA sponsor at Hanks High School, passed away August 20, 2002. Daniel was a football coach at Hanks from 1979 to 1987. Prior to that he had coached freshman basketball. He has taught with the Ysleta Independent School District for 26 years, and was recently recognized for “Outstanding Contributions to our Youth” with the 2002 Excellence in Education Award.
Daniel was active on the Sun Bowl Team Host Committee for 12 years and was involved with the Senior All Star Bowl Football Classic. He was on the executive board of the Southwestern International Livestock Show and Rodeo as vice-president, and a member of the USTRC (United States Team Roping Championship) and the Ysleta Rough Riders. Daniel graduated from Fabens High School and the University of Texas at El Paso. He is a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Nancy Sue Daniel; his daughter Whitney Shea, a junior on the tennis team at Western New Mexico University; his sons Jason Aubrey Amis and wife Garette of Arlington, Texas, Cody Rene Amis of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Landon Kyle Amis of El Paso. He is also survived by his parents, Rosalind and Wesley Defoe; his sister Julie Roseanne Johnson and husband Ken Johnson; aunts and uncles Julia Laughlin of Premont, Texas, Carolyn and R. E. (Dick) Batchelor of Chula Vista, Calif., Patricia Miller of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Myrlene and A. J. Scott of Sweetwater, Texas; his nephew, Edgar Savage Brown III, stationed in Seattle, Wash., with the U.S. Navy; two nieces, Rebecca and Sherry Reynolds of El Paso, and nine first cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, the late Robert Thurman (Dan) Daniel.
Pallbearers were C.E. Murray Jr., Ken Johnson, Jason, Cody and Landon Amis, and Edgar Brown III. Honorary pallbearers were, in John Daniel’s words, “everyone.” He was a best friend to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. Interment took place at Evergreen East Mausoleum. Hudnel “Doc” Jones was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Fort Davis, Texas; he passed away Thursday, Aug. 22. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and had been in the lumber business for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lois Jones. He is survived by his son, Hudnel Jones Jr., and by two grandchildren, Jacqueline Marie and Julianna Jones of Odessa. Jack Price Jr., 71, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, after a battle with lung cancer. Born in El Paso, he joined the El Paso Police Department in 1954. By his retirement in 1976, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to law enforcement in 1988, serving with the El Paso Community College Police Department, from which he retired in 1996. He and his wife had relocated to Houston in 1999 to be close to their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Iva Mae Davis and Jack Price. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Price; his sons, Jack Price III and his wife Kathy Price, and Joe Gerald “Jerry” Price; his daughters, Joanne Williams and her husband Bob Williams, Patricia Sistrunk and her husband Laurence Sistrunk, Linda McMahon and her husband Scott McMahon; his grandchildren, Lara, Michael, Suzanne and Jennifer Williams; and his sister, Thelma Hawkins. Elvira Williams, 75, passed away Aug. 21. Viola D. Campbell, 87, passed away Aug. 21. She was born Feb. 24, 1915, in Hickory, N.C.
She was an emeritus missionary to Mexico and the Baptist Spanish Publishing House. She was a member of Gethsemani Baptist Church in Juarez and later of First Baptist Church in El Paso. She is survived by four nieces and three cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Spanish Publishing House Foundation or to the First Baptist Church Foundation of El Paso.

Edna Estella Rey, 72, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, in Houston. She attended Loretto Academy and graduated from Austin High School, and went on to receive a bachelor’s of art in sociology from Loretto Heights College near Denver. She was a social worker in Child Protective Services after college, and taught second grade children at Burleson Elementary. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and was president of the Hillside PTA. She was director of methods and procedures at R. E. Thomason General Hospital and was director of Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics and administrator of several family enterprises.

Jean Lapowski Schecter passed away Saturday, Aug. 31. She was the daughter of Eleanor and Errold Lapowski. She was a native El Pasoan and attended Dudley School, El Paso High School and the University of Texas at Austin. She became a registered dietitian and worked at Southwestern General Hospital, Hotel Dieu, Providence Memorial Hosptial and Sierra Medical Center. She was active in the American Dietetic Association.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Irving Schecter; by her daughter and son-in-law, Erline and Bruce Gordon; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Schecter; two grandsons, Scott Michael Schecter and Craig Ryan Schecter; and her sister, Emily Lapowski. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, Candlelighters or any other charity.
