Chuy De La O passed away in April 2002. A native El Pasoan, he was the second youngest of 22 brothers and sisters. Blind since infancy due to the administration of nitrate rather than silver nitrate in his eyes, he attended the Texas School for the Blind for almost 12 years, but eventually regained sight in one eye. At the age of seven, he distributed leaflets for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and in his adulthood became a mainstay of the El Paso political scene, participating in many political races. He was known for commanding the dance floor at political parties, jitterbugging in his own unique style. He had a small speaking role in “Lone Wolf McQuade,” filmed in El Paso. He ran for mayor and city council and was twice defeated. He met governors, celebrities and many people, and never passed up an opportunity to pin an El Paso pin on their lapels. Ana Maria Ponce passed away Thursday, April 11. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Elias Ponce and Juanita Ponce, and by her brother, Manuel Ponce Jr. She is survived by her husband, George H. William “Bill” Ayres passed away Friday, April 12. He was a resident of Chaparral for 40 years and was a retired master sergeant from the United States Army after 22 years of service, including WWII and the Korean War. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nickie Ayres. He is survived by his children, Doug Ayres and his wife Michele Ayres; Debbie Cordova and her husband Phillip Cordova; Barbara Bennett and her husband David Bennett; granddaughters Heather Ayres and Renee Bennett; and his sister, Louise McCormick. Carlos Filiberto Saenz passed away Saturday, April 13. He was a retired gunnery sergeant from the United States Marine Corps. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rafael Carrasco. He is survived by his parents, Rafael and Rosa Saenz, and by his wife, Rosa O. Gregory Martin Jensen passed away Saturday, April 13. He retired from the United States Army after 23 years of service. Viola T. Passero passed away Saturday, April 13. A longtime El Paso resident, she was the past president of the Hotel Dieu Auxiliary and a member of the Catholic church. Luis “Louie” Montes passed away Saturday, April 13. He was born in San Elizario in 1922 to Jose Jesus and Romanita Montes. He was a platoon sergeant in the United States Army during WWII, assigned to Company B, 71st Infantry Regiment, 44 Div., serving in Eastern France, Germany and Austria as a squad leader in a rifle company. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the WWII Victory Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Manuel Montes, Francisco Montes, Conrado Montes and Antonio Montes/; and his sister, Aurora M. Lara. He is survived by his daughters, Maria Teresa Martinez and Roberta Laguna; sons, Ruben Montes, Luis Montes and Michael Norris; brothers Jose Jesus Montes II, Maximo Montes, Carlos Montes and Oscar Montes; sister Maria Teresa Maldonado; twelve grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Lloyd Z. Purvin, LTC, US Army (Ret.), passed away Monday, April 15. He had been a resident of El Paso for 42 years and was a member of Temple Mt. Sinai, the Retired Officer’s Association and the Jewish War Veterans, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Alice T. Grover C. Stewart Jr. passed away Sunday, April 21. He moved with his family from a turpentine plantation in Florida to El Paso in 1926, graduated from Austin High School and scored the first touchdown in McKee Stadium. He majored in speech and drama at the University of Southern California, completing his degree at the University of New Mexico. Stewart flew DC-6s for American Airlines, retiring as Captain (a Grey Eagle) to join his father in their expanding lumber business, and he established Southwest Moulding Co. in Dallas in 1951, importing Mexican lumber from his father in Durango. The business grew to include warehouses in Dallas, the International Brick Company, Southwest Frame and Millwork Co., Stewart Moulding and Frame, and the Bent Tree division in Denton.
Over the past two years, Stewart and his wife Carolyn, along with members of their church, conceived, planned and constructed the Stewart Family Life Center at Western Hills United Methodist Church, which will be dedicated May 19.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his children, Trink Karen Day Stewart and her husband Ronnie Crouch, Anne and Charlie Smith, Dr. John and Mary Kay Guggedahl, Lynn and Michou Lopez, and Nancy Guggedahl; his grandchildren: Katreena, Danielle Crouch, Alexandria Crouch, Kyle Lopez and his fiancée Heather Willbrand, Matthew Lopez, Phoenix and Benny Odle and Marie Guggedahl; and his beloved dog, Lady. Elta Mae Haugland passed away in Silver City, NM, Sunday, April 14. She was widowed twice, preceded in death by her first husband, P. R. Pennington, and by her second husband, Judge Andrew Haugland. She is survived by one daughter, Prestene Pennington Dehrkoop and her husband, Clinton Dehrkoop; two grandchildren, Terry Lee Dehrkoop and his wife Donna Dehrkoop, and Penny Lynn Gould and her husband Kelly Gould; four great-grandchildren: David Dehrkoop, Stephanie Dehrkoop, Ryan Scott Gould and Shannon Leigh Gould. Kenneth Martin Spencer passed away April 11. He retired from the United States Army as a sergeant first class after 21 years of service. Michael Medrano Sr. passed away Sunday, April 14. He was a longtime residsent of El Paso and a member of the Catholic church. He is survived by his son, Michael Medrano Jr.; his wife Belinda Sanchez; two step-children, Aaron Venegas and Alyson Venegas; his parents, Jesus and Estela Medrano; his brothers, Arthur Medrano and his wife Susana Medrano, Gabriel Medrano, Frank Medrano and his wife Nadia Medrano, and Paul Medrano; his sister, Naomi M. Ramirez and her husband George Ramirez; nieces and nephews: Tanya, Joey, Isaac, Crystal, Karissa, Sevian and Sofia. Interment took place in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Aubrey Laneave passed away Sunday, April 14. A longtime resident of El Paso, he served for 27 years in the United States Army, and was a veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietname War. He received numerous citations and medals, including the Presidential Citation-Combat American Division on Guadalcanal. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. His survivors include his wife, Mary L. Reverend Father E. Hubert Ruble passed away Friday, April 12. He spent 22 years and 6 months in the United States Army, serving his country during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietname War, and was a qualified Sharpshooter U.S. Army rifle M. 1903, expert U.S. Army rifle M-1, Sharpshooter U.S. Army M-45, qualified by field range firing of U.S. Army Automatic Weapon Rifle Bar, U.S. Army Machine Gun .30 caliber and .50 caliber and U.S. Army Major 60 mm., qualified first aid technician (Red Cross certified), qualified Chemical Warfare Specialist and Emergency Demolition Specialist. He received the Good Conduct Medal with two Silver Knots, the American Defense Theater Army Reserve Medal, Southwest Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Medal. Upon his retirement from the military, he attended the University of Texas at El Paso and ultimately received two masters degrees in philosophy and sociology from 1972 to 1980. Upon receiving his degrees, he became a Cannon 8 priest in the Episcopal Church serving the Trans Pecos Region in Van Horn and Horizon City, Texas. He became an Associate Priest at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in El Paso. He was also a Ltc. in the Civil Air Patrol as the Chaplain for Group 16 Texas Wing. He was a 66-year, 32nd degree Mason and Scottish rite Shriner of Mooreland, Okla., and El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies and El Maida Temple. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Lions Club. He was a committee member of Precinct 68 in El Paso. He is survived by his wife, Helen Townsend Ruble; his sister, Justine Brown; son Bruce Frank Ruble and his wife Diana Ruble; stepdaughter Lea Rea Hugo; stepson L. Grant Rogers; six grandchildren: Leslie D. Hugo and his wife Donna Hugo; La Nell Amparan and her husband Mike Amparan; Glenn R. Hugo Jr., David Gardner and his wife Kim Gardner, Ronda Aycock and Melissa Ann Ruble; great-grandchildren Dalton and Dillon Hugo, Kira Crider, Ty David Gardner, Madison Aycock, and Brandon Aycock. Roland Riches passed away Thursday, April 18. He was a resident of El Paso for 42 years, a veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Army Infantry, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars #8919, Wallace Hughston #1393 AF and AM, El Maida Shrine Temple, the Bowlers Unit and the Jesters. He was also a retired foreman of the training AIDF at Fort Bliss. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene M. riches; his daughters, Paula Earl and her husband Jonathan Earl, and Elizabeth Rosenborough and her husband Tom Rosenborough; his sons, James D. Riches and John R. Riches; five grandchildren: Nathan, Andrew, Laurel, Nicolas and Alexander Earl; brother, Benjamin Riches and his wife Carol Riches and brother-in-law Benjanin Nathan and his wife Lilnda Nathan. Marta Arat passed away Tuesday, April 23. Born in Juarez, she was an artist and arts activist, a former advisory board member for the city of El Paso Arts Resources Department, and the founder and past president of the JUNTOS Art Association. She served on the Twelve Travelers of the Southwest advisory committee.
She created many paintings for the city’s art department, including the popular “Mona Lisa a la Mexicana,” a depiction of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa wearing a Mexican-style dress and reboso and bright ribbons and flowers in her hair.
She was among 16 El Paso artists whose work was included in the book “Desert Echo: Women Illuminate the Sacred,” published in 2000 by The Woman’s Museum in Dallas. Her painting, “La Perla,” was featured on the cover.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Arsavir Arat; her son, Sarkis Arat; her daughter, Claudia Segrest; and two grandchildren.

Guy Milton Decker of Edmond, Okla., passed away Wednesday, April 3. He was a former resident of El Paso, where he graduated from Eastwood High School, and from the University of Texas at El Paso with a master’s degree in geology. He is survived by his wife, Michal; his two daughters, Lauren and Paige; his parents, Ralph and Janice Decker; his sister Dawn Skinner and her husband Jack Skinner; his brother Matt Decker and wife Vicki Decker; sister Gay Forrister and her husband Wade Forrister; sister-in-law Marce Bullock; grandmother Naomi Decmer Jensen; and three nephews and three nieces.

John C. Barry passed away Friday, April 26. He retired from the United States Army and went to work for NASA and continued his career in the Department of Defense. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Barry; his sons, John E. Barry and his wife Suzanne, and Robert M. Barry and his wife Karen Barry; granddaughters, Jennifer Barry, Karina Barry and Erin Barry; great-grandson Daniel Barry; brother Robert Barry; and his sister Bonnie Cason. Bernardino Prati passed away Sunday, April 28, two months before his 90th birthday. He was born in Lipari, Italy, and his family brought him to America when he was four years old. His uncle, Bartolo, owned and operated the Model Bar, located on the corner of San Antonio and Stanton, which was frequented by prominent businessmen and the famous Pancho Villa. Prati and his family moved to the family farm in 1918, and he attended school at the one-room Ysleta Mission schoolhouse. His family built Tri-State Lumber Company on the old county road, and grew the business to include housing construction, a motor court, a gas station and a grocery store. In 1935, Prati became the manager of Prati’s Grocery Store and Rome Courts, and was then drafted into the Army in 1942, where he was an armorer handler and manager of a PX in India during WWII. In 1956, he joined his brothers, Silvio and Joe Jr. in Prati and Prati General Contractors. They built many schools, churches, hospitals and military buildings in the El Paso area. He and his brothers retired in 1987. Prati was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Prati was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Mae Crutcher Prati, and his sister, Connie Caldarella. He is survived by his children, Lela Prati Selby and Paul B. Prati; his grandchildren Gina Selby, Erin Selby, Carissa Prati, Jenna Prati, Paul Bennie Prati Jr. and Ryan Harding; and his great-grandson, Skyler Houston Prati. He is also survived by his brothers, Silvio Prati and Joe Prati Jr. and his sister Rosalind Prati.

Dr. Antonio Dow passed away Monday, April 22. A native El Pasoan, he graduated from the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy, now known as UTEP, and graduated second in his class at St. Louis University with a doctorate in medicine. After an internship at St. Louis University School of Medicine, he served as a Captain in the United States Army and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for 18 months. He completed his residency in general surgery in Youngstown Hospital in Ohio, where he met his bride-to-be, Jane Gotti, a surgical scrub nurse.
He opened his general surgery practice in El Paso in July 1953, practicing until his retirement in 1991. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a senior member of the Texas Surgical Society, and certified by the Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He was a delegate to the Texas Medical Association for six years, and a member of the Council for Member Services for nine years. A member of the El Paso County Medical Society for four decades, he was presented with the society’s S. T. Turner Award honoring his dedication to the practice of medicine and his contributions to the El Paso medical community.
Dr. Dow served as chief of staff and chief of surgery at Providence Memorial Hospital, where he was also honored as a doctor of the year. His colleagues voted him the most popular and outstanding surgical member of the staff in 1990 at Providence Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian Dow and Julia Jabalie Dow; his grandson, Christopher Michael Dow; his brother, George Dow; and his sister, Rose Dow Ocoha. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Dow; his daughters, Debbie Dow Amezcua, Sherry Dow Rios, Sandy Dow Mapula; his son, Dr. Charles A. Dow; Michelle Rios Perez; and their spouses and children: Robert W. Amezcua, Catherine J. Amezcua, Jennifer M. Amezcua, Dr. Jesus A. Rios, Ricardo Rios, Thomas Rios, Steven Mapula, Kevin Mapula, Summer A. Dow, Caitlyn A. Dow and Matthew C. Dow.
