Cira (Mama) Lightbourn, 90, passed away May 1. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church who provided a foster home for more than 300 children. She is survived by her children — Ramon Lightbourn Jr., Gloria Lightbourn, Arturo Lightbourn and his wife Mary Elsa, Salvador Lightbourn and his wife Vicky, Alicia Armenta and her husband Magdaleno, Margarita Harbeck and her husband Earl, Lucila Lightbourn, Elizabeth Nuñez and husband Agustin and Rosa Maria Fonseca and her husband Edward — 32 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. Burial was May 4 in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Joe Davis Murry, 82, passed away May 1. The longtime resident of El Paso was a WWII Army veteran and was the owner of Murry Auto Parts, retiring after 25 years of service in the El Paso area. He is survived by his nephew Randy Hamilton, his niece Jackie and her husband Luis Hernandez and his great nieces Mindy and Jodi Cooper. Burial was May 4 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Durwood Drew Roberts, 79, passed away May 2. The longtime El Paso resident was the owner of Ma and Pa’s Pet Shop for 15 years. He is survived by wife Dorothy Winfrey Roberts, stepsons Joel and John H. Kendrick, seven step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, one brother and one sister. Burial was private.

Manuel Rosas Mendoza, 85, passed away May 4. He was a retired foreman with El Paso Water Utilities, a Navy veteran of WWII and loved to play golf. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Petra H. Mendoza and their children — Manuel Mendoza and his wife Martha, Ricardo Mendoza and his wife Esther, Maria Luisa Duran and her husband Ed, and Patricia Mendoza Lucas and her husband Grant. He also has seven grandchildren — Mark Mendoza and his wife Gaby, Mike Mendoza and his wife Sue, Ricardo Mendoza, Dominic Mendoza, Robert Lucas, Kathleen Mendoza and Mariella Mendoza — and four great-grandchildren. Interment was May 7 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents Valentin and Eulalia Mercado, his wife Natividad Mercado, their children — Pedro I. Mercado, Cesar Mercado, Gabriel Mercado and Alfredo I. Mercado — and their grandchildren — Pedro Valentin Mercado, Miguel Mercado, Carlos Mercado and Bailey A. Mercado. Interment was May 7 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Marie Bowling Provencio, age 80, passed away May 2. She was a longtime Anthony, N.M., resident and a retired secretary with the Gadsden school district. She is survived by her husband Ramiro Provencio, their children — Gene Provencio and his wife Olga, Bobby Provencio, Marty Brito and her husband Ray — six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter Christie Thomas. Cremation followed a May 7 prayer vigil and funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Anthony. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Re-search Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Adel C. Schrein, 86, passed away May 8. She had lived in El Paso since 1973 when she moved from Alamogordo where she and her late husband R.T. Schrein owned Apache Van and Storage. She is survived by her children — Connie Jackson, Kathie Adkins and Jigger Staby — nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. After a memorial service on May 8 at Sun Valley Baptist Church, her cremains were interred at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

Interment was May 7 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters — Sylvia Cease, Phyllis Simon, Linda Green, Debbie McElwain, Monica Rogers and their families — eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a nurse at Providence Memorial Hospital for 15 years. Burial was May 4 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested that donations be made in her memory to the El Paso Cancer Treatment Center.

Tulia Faye Winton passed away April 27. She was a graduate of Bowie High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Baylor College and a master’s from Texas Western College. She was a retired teacher with 45 years of teaching in primary schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women and received awards as an author and poet. She is survived by her sister Vona Winton and her brothers Robert Winton and Glenn Winton. A memorial service was held May 2. Interment was at the family gravesite in Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie, Texas.

Roberto (Beto) Chavez Sr., 74, passed away May 1. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and retired from Rust Tractor Co. as a welder. He is survived by his son Roberto Chavez Jr., his mother Petra Chavez, his sister Lilia C. Torres and her husband Luis Sr., his brothers — Lorenzo Chavez Jr. and Rodolfo Chavez and his wife Socorro. Interment was May 8 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Dr. Cesar Guarjado, 76, passed away May 4, 2001. He was a longtime resident of El Paso, and a physician, who practiced in Juarez and then in El Paso until his death. He is survived by his wife Helen B. Guajardo, their children — Dr. Alicia G. Murphy and Cesar Luis Guajardo — four grandchildren and one brother, Mario Guajardo. No services were held and in lieu of flowers, the family suggested that contributions be made to a favorite charity.

Victorine “Vicky” Adler, 90, passed away May 9. She was a 25-year resident of El Paso, a Red Cross Volunteer at William Beaumont Army Medical Center for 25 years as well as a member of the Catholic Wives Association and the Officers Wives Association. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph M. Adler, their daughters — Dr. Diane Adler, Kathleen Adler and Marilyn Koepp and her husband Dennis — four grandchildren, a great-grandson, two sisters and one brother. A memorial Mass took place on May 12. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The Child Crisis Center of El Paso, 2100 N. Stevens, El Paso, TX 79930.

She is survived by her children — Crispin Armendariz, Justa Herrera, Esperanza Madero, Gloria Armendariz and Hidelia Calderon — 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and a sister Dominga Juarez. Lilia D. Arrambide, 93, passed away on May 8. She settled in El Paso after the Mexican Revolution and became a co-founder of Pancho’s Mexican Buffet with her late husband Jesse Arrambide. She was a member of the Third Order of Franciscans, the Catholic Daughters of America, Club de Mujeres Internacionales and Damas Leonas de Cd. Juarez. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Carolina Arrambida and her children — Maria A. Carrea and her husband Al Correa and Lilia A. Reade and her husband Luis P. Reade. Her grandchildren are: Al Correa Jr., Leticia Arrambide, Jesse G. Arrambide III, Lilia Carmona, Lilia P. Pellicano, Carmella Ramer, Rosa A. Saenz, Sandra Lockwood, Cindy Gallardo, Roland Correa, Mary Correa, Laurie Acosta, Nancy Cortez, and 17 great-grandchildren. Interment was May 11 at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
