SUE CHESSHIR

Sue  Johnson Chesshir of Floydada, after fighting a short but courageous battle with cancer, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, May 25, 2007.

Sue was born in Luxora, Arkansas to Doc and Juanita Boleyn on March 27, 1940. In 1948 her loving parents, Dewitt Talmage and Eula Mae, (Daddy  Johnson and Momma Johnson), brought her into their home and raised her before officially adopting her in 1957.

Sue was a member of the Church of Christ. Her home congregation was West College and Third in Lockney.

She attended schools in Three Way and Bula. On August 15, 1958, she married Donald Rhea Chesshir in Bula. They lived in numerous communities around west  Texas until settling in Floydada in 1973.

Sue worked for the Floydada Independent School District from 1976 until retiring in 2003. She served the schools as Duncan Elementary cafeteria manager, was a migrant clerk, PEIMS clerk, office secretary and bus driver. After her retirement, she continued part-time as the speech therapist secretary and bus driver until 2007.

Sue was a member of the Whirlwind Sams where she held several offices, served on the board of the Floydada Senior Citizens, served as president of the Women's Chamber of Commerce and for many years oversaw the Floyd County Stock Show concessions for both Floydada FFA and Floyd County 4-H.

Besides her beloved husband Don, the pride and greatest joy in her life were her children, grandchildren and great grand daughter and she was eagerly looking forward to the birth of additional great grand children.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Donald Rhea; two daughters and their husbands Donna and Charles Keaton of Lockney, Tammie and Bobby Shuping of Hale Center; one son and his wife, Don Garner and Christina Chesshir of Floydada; grand children, Charissa and Cory Golden of Brownfield, Rusty Keaton of Lubbock, Kami Keaton of Lubbock, Zach and Kristi Logan of Floydada, Zane and Cammy Logan of Canyon, Michael Shuping of Hale Center, Tyler Chesshir, Dillon Chesshir and Syndi Chesshir all of Floydada; and one great grand daughter, Taryn Golden of Brownfield.

She is also survived by three brothers and their wives, James and Sandra Boleyn of Littlefield, Buddy and Gwen Boleyn of Amherst and Big Boy and Cuc Boleyn of Nacogdoches; one sister and her husband, Ruby and Bill Isenberg of Denver City and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by both sets of parents and two infant twin brothers.

Her last wish was to donate her body to the  Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 10 A.M. at the West College and Third Church of Christ in Lockney, under the direction of Freeman-Abell Funeral Directors. The family will welcome visitors at any time. Memorials can be sent to the Ronald McDonald House of Lubbock or the American Cancer Society.

OSCAR G. LAMB

Oscar G. Lamb, 76, of Floydada passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007 at his residence. Prayer service was held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2007 at Lemons Funeral Home Chapel of Plainview. Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the Halfway Baptist Church. Burial was in the Halfway Cemetery under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview.

Oscar was born September 28, 1930 in San Diego,  Texas to Guadalupe Lamb and Simona Garcia Lamb. He married Ruby Mae Trevino on January 20, 1952 in Alice,  Texas.

KENNETH MAYFIELD

Kenneth Eugene "Gene" Mayfield of Henrietta,  Texas , passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2007. He was born on March 17, 1930 near Whitney, in Hill County,  Texas and moved to Floydada,  Texas when an infant. He was a graduate of Floydada High School and West  Texas State University where he received a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a men's counselor at WT, and then was employed by the U.S. Air Force Civil Service for 37 years, until his retirement in 1990. He served as a scout master for many years and received the highest awards for distinguished service from the Boy Scouts of America, the Silver Beaver and the Koskalakas. In Henrietta, he was active in the First Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon; a member of the Lion's Club and past Chairman of the Senior Citizens Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Murl Mayfield, and infant brother, Billy of Floydada,  Texas . He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary E. Moreman Mayfield; his son Bill Mayfield, his wife Brenda, and their sons, Matt and Kenny of Divide, Colorado; his son Kenneth Mayfield, his wife Jolene, and their children, Sarah, Anna, and Jake of San Antonio,  Texas; his daughter Polly Mayfield Johnson, her husband Steve, and their daughter Gracie of Austin,  Texas; and his grandson Jeremy Mayfield and his wife Dara of Norfolk, Virginia.

Viewing was from 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Davis Funeral Home in Henrietta,  Texas. A memorial service was held at the First Christian Church of Henrietta at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Graveside services were held at Rushing Chapel (Fairview Community) Cemetery near Floydada ,  Texas at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007.

His family would like to thank their many friends in Henrietta and family who have been so supportive over the years and particularly in the last 5 months. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ken's honor to the First Christian Church of Henrietta, the Clay County Senior Citizens‚ Center Building Fund, the Clay County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, or to the charity of your choice.

A St. Patrick's Day baby and an Irishman at heart, the family would like to leave you with a passage from one of his favorite songs, "The Land Across the Irish Sea".

"And if there is going to be a life hereafter

And somehow I am sure there's going to be

I will ask my God to let me make my heaven

In that dear land across the Irish sea."

GENE MCCLELLAND

Gene Allen McClelland, 87, a former resident of Lockney and a physician for thirty years, passed away Monday, May 20, 2007 in Fort Worth,  Texas.

Graveside Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery in Clarksville. Memorial: Gifts in Gene Allen's memory may be made to the Samaritan House, 929 Hemphill St., Ft. Worth, TX 76104; or American Diabetes Association, 4150 International Plaza, Ft. Worth, TX 76109.

Gene Allen was born in Gilmer on Sept. 18, 1919 to Marguerite and Allen McClelland. A graduate of Gilmer High School, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of  Texas at Austin in 1941, and his medical degree from Southwestern Medical College in Dallas in 1944. He completed his internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his practice in Lockney. In 1957, he relocated to Fort Worth where he began his residency at John Peter Smith Hospital. Dr. McClelland entered into private practice at Northwest Hospital in Fort Worth and retired in 1987.

McClelland entered the United States Army Reserves in 1942, was on active duty from 1945-1947, and was discharged as a Captain. He made numerous voyages from San Francisco to Japan on hospital ships transporting soldiers back to the United States.

Gene and Mary Louise Allen had many life long friends in Lockney and spent time with them throughout the years. In his fifty years in Fort Worth his interests included a passion for ballroom and round dancing, bridge, chess, beekeeping and managing his ranch in Upshur County,  Texas.

Dr. McClelland was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Witmer McClelland; and his brother, Harrod Hunt McClelland. Survivors: His daughters, Marsha Scarbrough of Reston, Virginia, and Charlotte Ice of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Anna Weatherly and her husband, John, Jason Johnston and his wife Amanda, Rachel Ice, Ranjit Kapila, Charlotte Lee Ice, and Amanda Ice; great-grandson, Joshua Weatherly.

CARL KIRBY ARNOLD

Carl Kirby Arnold, 84, of Amarillo, died on July 1, 2007 at his residence.

Carl was born on September 14, 1922 in Petrolia, TX. to Carl and Gladys Neff Arnold.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the Floydada Cemetery. Pastor Les Hall officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

MAMIE HAYES

Mamie Hayes, 89, longtime Lockney, TX resident passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the Lockney Health and Rehab Center in Lockney, TX.

Celebration of life services are under the direction of Parkside Chapel Funeral Home of Hereford, TX and will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Lockney with Reverend Kyle Brock officiating. Interment will follow in Lockney Cemetery.

Mrs. Hayes was born October 2, 1917 in Collin County, TX the daughter of William and Lula Eaves. She married George Hayes on December 18, 1939 in Lubbock, TX. Mrs. Hayes was a hard worker, many times hoeing cotton from sunup till sundown. She also loved dolls and quilting.

Survivors include 5 sons: Alvin Hayes, Roland Hayes, Cleatis Hayes and wife, Betty all of Lockney, TX, Ronnie Hayes and wife, Hopie of Farmersville, TX, Joe Hayes and wife, Tina of Caddo Mills, TX, 4 daughters: Shirley Hayes, Lesca Durham and husband, Danny of Lockney, TX, Rita Brown and husband, Benton of Lorenzo, TX,

June Hays and husband, Tommy of Plainview, TX, one daughter-in-law: Maryland Hayes of Plainview, TX, 22 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, 2 sons: Larry and Royce Hayes, 1 great-grandson: Rylee Cayden Hayes, 5 brothers and 6 sisters.

The family request memorials to the W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital, 320 N. Main Lockney, TX 79241.

MELTON "SONNY" LEE

Funeral services for Melton "Sonny" Lee, 72, of Plainview were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Rix Funeral Chapel in Hereford. Burial was held at Rest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors of Hereford.

He died Friday, June 29, 2007 at Covenant Medical Center in Plainview.

Lee was born April 15, 1935 in Matador to the late Homer Lee and Bessie Cranford.

Local survivors include cousins, Jimmy and Darlenda Marquis of Floydada.

SAMUEL DANIEL ROE

Samuel Daniel "Pete" Roe, 91, a lifelong resident of Floydada, passed away on June 28, 2007 in Floydada, TX.

Pete was born on December 22, 1915. He married Inez Pharis on February 14, 1937 in Clovis, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on June 2, 2003.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by one sister, Syble Patterson of Sundown, TX; one son, Sam Roe of Amarillo; two daughters, Sandra Turner and husband, Elton Turner of Flagstaff, AZ; and Linda Ramey of Houston; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Inez Rose; his parents, Newton Noblett and Allie Glover Roe; one infant brother; one sister, Betty Stackhouse; his daughter-in-law, Kay Roe and one infant granddaughter.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2007 at Floydada Cemetery. Pastor Henry Russell officiated. Burial was held in the Floydada Cemetery under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada, TX.

His memory will always be close to our hearts.

JOSEPHINE SWITZER

Margaret Josephine Switzer, 88, of Amarillo, died on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at her residence.

Mrs. Margaret Josephine Switzer was born September 22, 1918 in Chest Mound, TN to the late William Julius Waller and Jennie R. Young. She was married to G. W. Switzer on January 3, 1938 in Floydada. They were happily married for almost forty years. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1977. They moved from Floyd County in 1999 to be closer to her family. In her free time she loved gardening, knitting and crocheting. Josephine was a member of the First Baptist Church of Floydada.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, G. W. Switzer and her parents, William and Jennie Waller.

She is survived by two sons, Don Switzer and Glen Switzer, both of Amarillo; one daughter, Peggy Leopold of St. Cloud, FL; three sisters, Ina Jean Anderson, Eva Richardson, both of Lubbock and Vera Thornton of Tulia; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Mrs. Switzer were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the Floydada Cemetery. Glen Switzer officiated. Burial was under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

WANDA M. WARD

Graveside services for Wanda M. Ward, 80, of Lubbock, were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 2, 2007 at the Floydada Cemetery. The Reverend John Ballard officiated. She died Friday, June, 29, 2007 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Ward was born June 4, 1927 to Austin and Josie Heard. She attended Floydada schools and graduated from Lockney High School in 1945. She married Denver Ward on May 23, 1945 and they moved to Lubbock in 1948.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Ronald and wife, Faye of Grand Prairie; son, Larry and wife, Dianne of Plainview; daughter, Sue Cockrum and husband, Bob of Lubbock; four grandsons; two great-grandchildren and a brother, Jim Heard of Roswell, N.M.

Services were under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.
