Mrs. Chambers

Rena Rovella Huckaby Chambers 93, of Burnet, formerly from Evant, died on March 1, 2007, in Scott and White Hospital in Temple due to complications after falling and fracturing her pelvis. A memorial service was held at the Burnet Primitive Baptist Church on March 8, with Brother Mark Richards and Brother Royce Cockrell officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas, Texas.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1913 the daughter of Henry Lafeyette Huckaby and Isadora Coreen Carter in North Bennet, Texas near Goldthwaite. She had three brothers, Charles (Fadie), Jesse, and Edward Vernon, and four sisters, Myrtle Barkley, Belle Blackwell, Ella, and Estilla Huckaby.
She lived in Blanket during her teenage years and moved to many different locations around the state because her family followed the crops. She lived with her sister Belle near Three Rivers, Texas for several years where she worked in a meat market owned by her brother-in law.
When her brother in-law died she and her sister moved back to Evant where they both met the love of their lives. She met Elijah Jackson Chambers on a blind date set up by Doc Blackwell. She married at the age of 32 in a double wedding ceremony on Oct. 19, 1946, with her sister Belle and Doc.
She worked her entire life, raising her children and running her ranch 10 miles south of Evant. She was a very loving and devoted mother and housewife. For many years she was a member of the Caradan Primitive Baptist Church and raised her family in the church.
After her husband died on Jan. 7, 1984, she continued to run the ranch in Evant for 10 years. She moved to Gatesville and lived near her sons for 12 years. At this time, she joined the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church near Izora. On October 21, 2006, she moved to Burnet to live in Country Oaks Assisted Living to be near her daughter and she joined the Burnet Primitive Baptist Church.
During her retirement years, she worked with all her grandchildren on 4-H projects of clothing and sewing. She went to every stock show, 4-H contest, and school function that her grandchildren were in and that she could work into her busy schedule. She said for years she kept the road hot between Burnet and Gatesville, trying to not miss out on anything.
She was a very devoted member of the Primitive Baptist Church and in her retirement years, she spent many hours in front of the TV listening to preachers of other faiths and following them in her Bible. She loved listening to gospel music. Rena loved her church, her family, loved to play dominos and other games, and she loved to travel and shop. She kept her bags packed all the time so if someone called and wanted her to go somewhere, she could be ready to go quickly. She had many life long friends that would call her on the phone and spend hours visiting and asking her advice. She was such a special friend, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be loved and forever remembered for being the wonderful person she was.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; her parents; all her sisters, and two brothers.
She is survived by her sons, Jackson Edward Chambers and wife Bonnie of Albuquerque, N.M.; Elisha Weldon Chambers and wife Charolett of Gatesville; and Elijah Eldon Chambers of Brownwood; daughter Virginia Dare Halfmann and husband Bobby Halfmann of Burnet; brother, Edward Vernon Huckaby of Missouri City; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Coy Chambers, Adam Chambers, Cole Chambers, Travis Halfmann, Kyle Jurney and a friend Ryan Sartor.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Burnet Primitive Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1258 Burnet, Texas 78611.

Mrs. Gardner

Susie Dee (Wilson) Gardner died on March 9, 2007, at a Kerrville care facility. Funeral services were held March 12 at Grimes Funeral Chapel, in Kerrville with Dr. George Harris officiating.
She was born in Hamilton on July 13, 1915, the daughter of Eddie and Mattie Wilson. She lived in the Hamilton area until after her graduation from Hamilton High School.
She was married to Bradley L. Gardner, on June 9, 1934, in Stephenville. He preceded her in death on Sept .9, 2006. She was a homemaker until she and several of her friends decided to go to college in 1952. They commuted to Tarleton State College for two years, then transferred to Howard Payne University, where Mrs. Gardner received her Bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1957. She later returned to school and received a Master of Science in Education degree from Southwest Texas State College in 1962.
Mrs. Gardner was offered a teaching position at Tivy Elementary, in Kerrville, and taught there until her retirement in 1977.
She and her husband enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer, square dancing, and managing their rental property. She was also an accomplished seamstress and quilter, and shared many of her quilts with her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, and American Association of University Women.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Jouett) Gardner, of Lake Jackson; a daughter, Carmin (Doug) Graham, of Kerrville; seven grandchildren, Gary (Kathy) Gardner, Jr. of Friendswood, Colleen (Oliver) Hicks, of Lake Jackson, John Gardner, of Galveston, Brad Gardner and Jack Gardner, of San Marcos, Susan (James) Lamb, of Beeville, and Catherine (Steve) McBrayer, of Victoria; ten great-grandchildren, Shelby, Hayden and Lara, of Friendswood, Evan and Jill, of Galveston, Brian, John and Peyton, of Beeville and Haley and Chase, of Victoria; a sister, Clara Smith, of Hamilton, three sisters in-law, Zula Hunter, of Glen Rose, Maggie Gardner, of Hamilton and Mary Lois Gardner, of Marion, Iowa, numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a sister, Novella Trimble in 1966.
Pallbearers were Gary Gardner, Jr. John Evan Gardner, Brad Gardner, Jack Gardner, James Lamb, and Steve McBrayer
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Les Sherman Memorial Scholarship Fund, administered through the First Baptist Church of Kerrville, or the Hill Country Youth Ranch, P.O. Box 67, Ingram, Texas 78025.

Mr. Sills

Billy West Sills died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at Polytechnic United Methodist Church in Fort Worth with burial at Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park.
He was a nationally recognized and award-winning teacher and educational administrator whose career spanned 50 years with the FWISD and Texas Wesleyan University.
A resident of Fort Worth since 1945, he received undergraduate and graduate degrees from TCU and completed post-graduate work at Vanderbilt University and NTSU. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from TCU and completed post-graduate work at Vanderbilt University and NTSU. In 1993, he was named the first FWISD consultant for secondary social studies.
Mr. Sills was active in state, local and national social studies organizations including Texas Council for the Social Studies and Texas Social Studies Supervision Association. He was founder of the Fort Worth Area Council for Special Studies and was instrumental in the establishment of the Metroplex Social Studies Supervisors. He held various positions in these organizations including TCSS president and TCSS Membership Chair. These and other contributions gained him respect from his peers, who in 1985, established the Billy W. Sills Outstanding Social Studies Educator Award. Most recently he participated actively in the Fort Worth retired School Employees Association.
In 1996, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University for “Epitomizing the Wesleyan tradition of knowledge and vital piety – truly ‘A Man for all Seasons.’
Recognized as a historian, he was instrumental in founding and maintaining the FWISD archives that were designed to preserve the history of the FW Public School. The archives center was subsequently named the “Billy W. Sills Archives Center of the Fort Worth ISD. He was appointed a member of the Tarrant County Historical Commission, receiving a Jary Award for service.
He was the church choir director of Englewood UMC and a soloist and long-term choir member at Polytechnic UMC where he served as Sunday school teacher, administrative council chairman and in numerous other capacities.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years Barbara; three sons, Bart and wife Alice of Arkansas, Barry of Houston, Blake of Fort Worth; a daughter, Beth Miller and husband Jeff of California; six grandchildren, Adam, Andy, Amber, Abby Malia and Nathan; a brother, Ashley Harold Sills, DDS of Hamilton; a sister, Ann Helbert of Fort Worth and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He leaves behind a host of friends and colleagues who will miss his leadership, compassion and integrity.

Mr. Reesing

Michael Dohn Reesing, 51, of Waco died Sept. 2, 2002 at his residence. Services were held Sept. 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6125 Bosque Blvd. with the Rev. Donald L. Olson Jr., pastor, officiating. Burial followed at Waco Memorial Park.
Mr. Reesing was born July 26, 1951 in Hamilton, the son of Walter and Frances Wiede Reesing. He graduated from Richfield High School in Waco and attended North Texas State University and McLennan Commuity College. He was employed for more than 26 years with the State of Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waco, serving as an elder for many years.
He was a loving husband to Vicki since 1991 and a devoted father to three daughters.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Reesing and father, Walter Reesing.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Nikki Skeen and husband Billy of Waco, Cheryl and Katrina Cook; his mother, Mrs. Frances Wiede Reesing of Waco; a brother, Steve Reesing and his wife Debi of Austin; nephews, Kyle and Todd Reesing and niece, Megan Reesing of Austin.
Pallbearers were Danny Eppers, Ken Perry, Allan Aars, Tommy Stewart, Kyle Reesing and Todd Reesing.
Honorary pallbearers were Rick Woodward, Mike Fanning, Cecil Padgett, Bob Dieterman, Ben Gorham, Ken Abood, Steve Short, James Herring, Lynn Janek, Dan Monagan, Gary Daily and Dan Ryan.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Mr. Gromatzky

Erwin Albert (“Sam”) Gromatzky died Sept. 6, 2002 in Sealy. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
He was born March 11, the son of Anna Marie Riewe and Carl August Gromatzky on March 11, 1921 at their ranch home outside of Priddy.
Mr. Gromatzky graduated from Priddy High School, Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University. He retired after 37 years with Texaco Inc., where he was Chief Gas Engineer.
He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Bellaire where he served several terms as congregational president.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Frieda Kluge; his parents; a brother, Arthur Edmund Gromatzky; a sister, Irene Marie Gromatzky and two infant children.
Survivors include his two daughters, Jacqueline Gromatzky Blackman and Kathleen Gromatzky Morrow; his sons-in-law, Patrick Blackman and Mark Michael Morrow; grandchildren, Carolyn Blackman Janse, Julie Blackman Philpott, Nicholas Albert Morrow, Michael Morrow, Gracelynn Marie Morrow, Jeremy Matthew Morrow and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Jeske Gromatzky.
The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to Zion Lutheran Church in Priddy or Brazos Valley Hospice.

Mr. Streger

Jerry Milton Streger 49 died in Temple Sept. 8, 2002. Graveside funeral services were held Sept. 10 at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with Rev. Brad Davis officiating.
Mr. Streger was born February 9, 1953, at Gatesville, the son of Milton R. and Carra Vivian Davis Streger.
He was christened as an infant at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Aleman. He grew up in the Pottsville community where he graduated from Pottsville High School.
Mr. Streger made his home in Hamilton for five years prior to moving to the metroplex where he lived for fourteen years. He returned to Hamilton five years ago where he was employed by Eagle Con-struction.
He was married to Sandra Kay Beeman, January 20, 1977.
Survivors include three children Dewayne Streger of Bedford, Misty Middleton and her husband Michael of Cleburne and Rodney Streger of Joshua; one sister Kitty Stevens of Hamilton; one brother Jimmy Streger of Burleson and many other relatives, nieces and nephews survive.

Mrs. Jones
Nannie B. Jones, 88, formerly of Tucson, Arizona, died September 7, 2002 at Hamilton, Texas.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on September 11, 2002 at Capital Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Pflugerville, Texas with Rev. Logan Cummings officiating.
Mrs. Jones was born and raised in the Austin, Texas area. She married Ernest Jones of Austin, on June 27, 1933.
She was a long time resident of Tucson, Arizona and was employed by the Tucson school system. She retired after many years of service and continued to make her home in Tucson where she enjoyed the mountains and activities with friends.
In 1997, due to declining health, she moved to Hamilton to be near her sister, Annie and her nephew Brady Arbuckle and his wife, Clarlynn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Christian and Elsie Kretschmar Peterson, three brothers, Arthur, Lawrence and Willie, three sisters, Ruth, Annie and Edna and her husband, Ernest.
Survivors include her step-daughter, Helen Alford and her step-granddaughter, Nancy Crimmings, both of Phoenix, Ariz. and a number of nephews, nieces and special long-time friends in Tucson.

Christopher Edward Manzanares
Christopher Edward Manzanares, 20, of Woodway, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at a Waco hospital.
Chris was born September 11, 1982, in Caracas, Venezuela, to Carlos and Deborah (Toon) Manzanares. He moved to the U.S. when he was 1 year old and was fluent in both Spanish and English. He had previously lived in Evanston, IL and Holland, MI and moved to Texas when he was 5. He later moved to Woodway but his favorite house was always on Oklahoma Avenue in Hewitt.
He graduated from Midway High School and had just finished his first semester at TSTC, majoring in computer graphics. He also worked part-time at El Conquistador as a waiter. Chris was a gifted artist and guitarist and had a heart the size of Texas.
He would take people into his apartment when he thought they needed help and was always very generous with whatever he had.
Animals always held a special place in his heart, especially his precious Goldie. In addition to art and music, he most enjoyed fishing, camping, and swimming in the woods and the South Bosque River behind his house, with his ?big brother Charlie?, whom he adored. They were inseparable from the day he was born.
Chris had absolutely boundless energy from his first breath, filled his home as a child with spare parts to use for his inventions, and collected special rocks wherever he went. Had it not been for art and music, he might have been a geologist or an engineer.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Pedro A. Manzanares and his beloved grandmother, Maria Manzanares, his great-aunt, Graciela Ibarra and his aunt, Carleen Richeson. He is survived by his parents, Carlos and Deborah Manzanares, his brother, Charlie and sister, Christina, his grandparents, Herod and Dorothy Toon, his aunts and uncles, Terrence Toon, John and Beth Crider, Ward and Tami Wojciehowski, Pedro and Susana Manzanares, Antonio and Fannery Manzanares, Carlos and Myriam Romero, Luis and Hortensia Manzanares, Luis and Maribel Moyano, his cousins, Sarah and Ashley Crider, Drew, Abby, Aidan and Austin Wojciehowski, Eduardo, Cesar, Patricia, Graciela, Gabriella, Oswaldo, Jose David, Yndira and Ydabel Manzanares, Carlos Eduardo, Carlos Oswaldo and Maria Auxiliadora Romero, his special friend, Savanna Bleidt, and his lifelong friend, Remy Lavadia.
Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 5 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard. A memorial videotape of Chris' life prepared by OakCrest Funeral Home will be shown during the visitation. Samples of his art work will also be on display. Bruce Berg, Concert Master of the Waco Symphony Orchestra and Professor at Baylor University will perform a violin solo and memories will be shared.
A Funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 9820 Chapel Road in Hewitt, with Father Don Loftin officiating. Musica di Neglia (strings) will provide music during the mass.
Memorials can be made to Fuzzy Friends Animal Rescue or the Waco Humane Society.

Curtis Cathey
Curtis O'Daniel Cathey, 63, of Waco, passed away suddenly Sunday morning, May 4, 2003, at his home.
SERVICES: Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque. Burial will be at Oakwood.
VISITATION: Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial videotape of Curtis' life created by OakCrest Funeral Home will be shown during visitation.
PERSONAL LIFE: Curtis was born January 13, 1939, in Oglesby to Herman and Bertha (Bragewitz) Cathey. He was a retired title setter.
Curtis was a talented craftsman known for his paintings and woodcarvings. He loved southwest themes so his art beautifully portrayed Cowboys, Indians, and eagles. Some of the art will be displayed during visitation.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd Cathey.
SURVIVORS: Survivors include his wife, Linda Cathey of Waco; son, Michael Cathey and wife Traci of Waco; daughters, Sheri Cathey of Waco and Malynda Cathey of Elm Mott; step-daughters, Eva and Dina Petty, both of Waco; brothers, Paul, Jack, Harold, and Audy Cathey, all of Waco; two sisters, Dorothy Cranfield of Abilene and Adeline White and husband Jackie of Waco; 5 grandchildren, and 8 step-grandchildren.
PALLBEARERS: Michael Cathey, Kevin Cathey, Joe Cathey, Josh McGowan, Lonnie Cowen
