Mrs. Thompson
Phelo Mae Resek Thompson died March 3, 2003. Funeral services will be held March 5 at 2 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home in Hamilton. Dr. Richard Chaffin will officiate and Rev. James Ballard will read the eulogy. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery.
Phelo was born June 5, 1911 in Kopperl, Bosque County, Texas the daughter and only child to Maude and Joseph Resek. Her dad was a devoted employee and station agent for the Santa Fe Railroad Company, for fifty years. As a child, Phelo spent many enjoyable hours playing around the depot and watching the trains go by.
In 1918 the family moved to Eden, Texas where Phelo started school. Because her parents taught her to spell, read, count, and write, Phelo was far more advanced than the other students and was promoted to the third grade her first year! In 1919 they moved back to Kopperl and lived there many years. In about 1923, the new Baptist preacher, Rev. Thompson and family moved to Kopperl. It happened they had a son about the age of Phelo and immediately the two became very close friends. Then in 1926 Phelo graduated, and in the fall started to Meridian College. That same year, the Thompson family moved away, so the two friends lost contact for about five years.
Phelo attended North Texas State two years and Texas Tech her senior year. At 18 years old, she was the youngest student to ever graduate from Texas Tech University. She taught school at Byers, Texas the following year. Her high school boyfriend found out where she was and they began corresponding regularly. During the school year, he came all the way to Texas from Indiana with a friend and paid her a surprise visit. They renewed their old friendship at once, and were soon married on August 28, 1931 at the home of her aunt, who was living in Topeka, Kansas. After visiting both his and her parents in Texas, they returned to Indiana and lived there about a year and a half where A.G. started flying airplanes.
On a visit to Texas they decided to buy a small grocery store and stay in Kopperl. Three years later, in 1936, they moved to Hamilton where they raised their children and became very active in the community. Here they operated a very successful grocery store for over 50 years. A. G. was an avid flier, which allowed them to fly extensively to interesting places and make wonderful new friends. They were happily married for 65 years.
Phelo is survived by her children, Gaye Thompson of Grants Pass, Oregon, Dorothy Atwater of Richmond, Texas, and Joe Thompson of Ft. Worth, Texas; one granddaughter, Kim Henderson and husband, Mark of Richmond, Texas and one great-grandson, Justin Wayne Henderson of Richmond.
She was preceded in death by her husband A. G. and an infant son, Jim.
Education and learning were important to Phelo and A. G. They both enjoyed intellectual pursuits. Therefore, some of the charitable gifts were for the education of the children of friends in Mexico City. A very generous endowed scholarship was set up for Hamilton graduating seniors…a gift that will live beyond all our lifetimes. Phelo and A. G. gave generously to New Horizons Ranch, for children, in Goldthwaite. In addition to providing major funding for the first new group home on the ranch, they continued to remember each child with gifts at Christmas.
A generous gift to the Hamilton Hospital made possible the purchase of CAT scan equipment. This gift may well have saved the hospital financially and continues to save lives every year. The Thompsons donated the land for the beautiful library in Hamilton. But, their caring extended beyond their own area when Phelo made a wonderful and generous contribution to the Cross Plains Public Library.
There are many other caring gestures known only to the ones who benefited from these special gifts. And who can measure the worth of their loyal and faithful friendships - with the love they gave to so many?!!
Immortality: Isn’t it sharing a part of you that will live on after we are all gone? This is what Phelo and A.G. have done.
