Mrs. Garza
Linda Faye Garza, 62, died Jan. 23, 2005, at her residence in Austin, surrounded by loved ones. A memorial service was held at St. Barnabas the Encourager Evangelical Church in Austin on Jan. 29.
Mrs. Garza was born November 25, 1943 in Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Henry and Mathilda Marwitz. Survivors include her husband, Marvin Garza; her son, Glenn Garza of Dallas; daughters, Lynnette May and Melannie Clack, both of Austin; five grandchildren; and a brother, Alton Marwitz of Lampasas.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Garza had requested that donations be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, 500 NE Spanish River Blvd., Suite 8, Boca Raton, FL 33431 www.ovarian.org.
Mr. Burkett
Joe Burkett, 79, of Evant died Jan. 26 at Hamilton General Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at Briggs-Gamel-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas with Joe Banta officiating. Burial followed at Townsen Cemetery near Adamsville.
Mr. Burkett was born Dec. 23, 1925 in Burkett, the son of Joe Bailey and Gacia Walker Burkett.
He was married to Jaxene Banta on Aug. 16, 1944 in Lampasas.
Mr. Burket was a retired auto mechanic and member of the Christadelphian faith. He had lived the past seven years in Evant, moving there from Houston.
Survivors include his wife, Jaxene Burkett of Evant; a daughter, Annette and husband Troy Haltom of Fruitport, Mich.; five sons, Billy Joe Burkett Jr. of Channelview, Robert Neal Burkett and wife Janice of Phoenix, Ariz., Steven Bruce Burkett of Evant, James Paul Burkett and wife Cyndee of Cedar Park and John Howard Burkett of Evant; a sister, Audrey, Jean and husband E.J. Chambers of Lampasas; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stevens
Margie Kay Boone Stevens died Dec. 10, 2004 in Artesia, NM where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was born at San Salines, on Aug. 30, 1906 and grew up around Leon Junction
She was married to West Sheldon in 1921 at Mount Calm. He preceded her in death in May, 1941. The couple had two daughters and four sons.
She was married to Connie Balera in 1963 at Sea Graves. They had two boys. The couple owned the CM Diner in Yuma for many years.
Three of Mrs. Stevens’s sons, a daughter and a grandson were killed in a car wreck in November, 1976.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
She was married to Bill Stevens in May, 1985. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Stevens was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as a good friend and neighbor.
She attended church for many years at Victory Temple in Hamilton.
Mr. Daniel
Brent J. Daniel, 72 of Comanche died Jan. 28, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at graveside in Toliver Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Calcote officiating.
He was born Jan. 26, 1933 in Hamilton, the son of William Harvey Daniel and Dorothy Doris (Priddy) Daniel. He was reared in the Gustine and Lamkin area and retired as Comanche County Commissioner of Precinct 3. He was a veteran, having served in the Army in the Korean War and he was a Methodist.
Mr. Daniel was married to Neta Sue Hayes on Dec. 18, 1953 in Comanche County.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda and husband Ken Milburn of Lamkin; a son, David and wife Dana Daniel of Lamkin; granddaughters, Crystal and husband Carl Landes of Stephenville, Cheyenne and husband Lee Adcock of Stephenville and Deidre Daniel of Lamkin; grandsons, Jerrod and wife Kayla Hicks of Gustine and Calvin Milburn, of Lamkin; great-grandchildren, Carissa Landers of Stephenville, Grady Hicks of Gustine,; a brother Gary and wife Lana Daniel of Kyle; a sister Nelda Lee of Anson; a friend, Jane Evans of Temple; sisters-in-law, Betty Hayes of Gustine and Edgilee Parker of Arlington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Neta Sue Daniel on Oct. 17, 1988.

Mrs. Simpson
Zonell Simpson, 77, of Castroville, formerly of Hamilton, died Jan. 3, 2005. She lived the last five years with her son Bob and wife Linda Simpson. Burial was in Levelland Peaceful Gardens Cemetery on Jan. 7.
Mrs. Simpson was born Nov. 6, 1927, the daughter of J.L. and Grace Funk. They lived in the Carlton area and she graduated from Carlton High School on May 25, 1945.
She was married to R.T. Simpson Jr. on March 2, 1947. The couple lived in Levelland for many years. They had a daughter, Rebecca Nell and son, Robert L. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R.T. Simpson; daughter, Becky; four brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include a brother, Lloyd and a sister, Loretta as well as other loved ones in the area.

Valeta Fae Collins, 79, of Fort Worth died Jan. 31, 2005 at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Feb. 2 at Riley Funeral Home in Hamilton with Rev. Keith Felton officiating. Burial will be at the Pearl Cemetery.
She was born Oct 8, 1924 in Evant. She married Wilber Lawrence Collins on June 6, 1947 and raised her family in Groves. She then lived in Hamilton until 1998 when she moved to Fort Worth to an assisted living home.
Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by her husband, Wilber Lawrence Collins, a daughter, Nancy Joyce Dietrich, sisters: Juanita Collins Lovell, Leona Bilberry and Violet Freeman; brothers: Graves, Autry, Hershel (Boots) and Forrest White.
Survivors include her daughter, Katie Bray and husband, Leo of Fort Worth; granddaughters, Stephanie Merling of Highland Village, Stacey Morrow of Indianola, Miss, Bobbie Werth of New Orleans, La., and Lauren Bray of Fort Worth; grandsons, John Allums, Jeffery Dietrich and Lawrence Kellar of Port Neches; sister, Verda Calhoun of Evant; twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nelson
Sherman Ray Nelson, 60, died Jan. 29, 2005 in the Hamilton General Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 31, in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Calcote officiating. Burial was in Board Church Cemtery.
Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 12, 1945 at Comanche, the son of A. J. Nelson and Patricia Pettijohn Nelson.
He graduated from Gustine High School in 1963. On Oct. 3, 1966 at Abilene, he was inducted into the Army as a Private and discharged from the US Army Personnel Center Oakland, California one year, eleven months and twenty-two days later with a rate of E-5. He served eight months and eleven days foreign service in Vietnam.
Mr. Nelson retired from the post office with thirty-five years of service. He loved to fish, to do wood working, carpentering, country dancing and helping others. He loved people and will be missed by his family and his many friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, A. J. Nelson and a sister, Carolyn Nelson.
Survivors include his three children, Jarrett Nelson and his fiancé Tammy of Austin, Julie Weaver and husband Larry and Jenny Rumbolz and her husband Jason, all of Hamilton; his mother, Patricia Nelson of Comanche; five grandchildren, Austin, Jordan, Ty, Kayleigh and Chase and a brother, Doyce Nelson and his wife Lillie of Zephyr as well as a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Bobby Pettijohn, Don McDonald, Vernon Gromatzky, Russ Calcote, Todd Jordan and Travis Johnson.

Mrs. Howerton
Cynthia Gail Howerton, 43, at Hamilton Thursday January 27, 2005. Graveside funeral services were held 10:00 A.M. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with Pastor Russell Nebhut officiating.
She was born June 6, 1961 at Dallas, the daughter of Horace Lee Long and Dorothy DeHart Long. Mrs. Howerton was a homemaker a home health worker and a Lutheran by faith. In 2004 she was married to Hugh Mack Howerton at Hamilton.
Survivors include her husband, Hugh Mack Howerton of Hamilton; four children, Janson Manning and Alan Manning, both of Hewitt, Charlie Bosse and Cynthia (Cindy) Bosse both of Hamilton; her father, Horace Lee Long of Flat; mother, Dorothy Silva of Lewisville; two brothers, Eddie Long of Evant and Joe Long of Navasota and one grandchild, Jesse Manning.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Troy Long.
Pallbearers were Alan Manning, Charlie Bosse, Apollo Long, Buck Long, Justin Blackwell and Jason Manning.

Madeline Virginia Jackson Burt, 75, of Round Rock died Feb. 1, 2005 in Round Rock. Graveside services were set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at Gentry’s Mill Cemetery with Pastor John Selle officiating.
She was born May 23, 1929 at Lamkin, the daughter of John Sloan Jackson and Annie Mae Smitherman Jackson.
Survivors include her two children, Terrie Ferguson of Florence and Barry Keith Burt of Houston.
She is preceded in death by a sister, Emily Phelps and two brothers Clyde and Denvey Jackson.

Mrs. Galindo
Maria Galindo 88, died at Hamilton Jan. 30, 2005. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Galindo was born Oct. 16, 1916 at Barksdale, the daughter of Juan Jose Lopez and Paula Ramirez. On October 15, 1937 at Lampasas, she was united in marriage to Frank Galindo Sr. He preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 2004.
Mrs. Galindo was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She had a full time job at home raising her ten children. She made sure that food was always ready for the family and anyone that the children or Frank brought home. By some, she was called Grandma Tortilla.
The children knew that Maria and Frank were the heart and soul of the Galindo family and counted it a blessing to have them as their parents.
Survivors include her ten children, Natalie Martinez of Weatherford, Maria Perez of Fort Worth, Rudy Galindo of Evant, Mike Galindo of Glen Rose, Frank Galindo Jr. of Belton, Ramona Lopez, Tina Flores, Annie Gonzales, Frances Galindo and John Galindo all of Hamilton; 43 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews, two of whom she was especially close to, Lorenza Pina of Lubbock and Pauline Salazar of Waco.
She is preceded in death by three grandsons; Danny Lopez Sr., Ryan Galindo and Jessie
(Cooter) Galindo; a sister, Ann Herrera and a brother, Floyd Gracia.
Pallbearers were: Daniel Galindo, Arthur Perez, Rocky Galindo, Randy Galindo, Steven Mendez, Michael Galindo, Mark Flores, Gabriel Lopez, Alisa Gonzales and Ronda Gonzales.

Mrs. Applewhite
Elizabeth Applewhite died Feb. 21, 2005 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Ozona Methodist Church. Burial was at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 22, 1920 in San Angelo, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Coose of Juno and later Ozona. She was reared and educated in Ozona and graduated from Draughon’s Business College in San Antonio. While in school, she worked as secretary of Ozona Public Schools.
She worked for Crockett County Water Control for 38 ½ years in an office shared by Bright Baggett’s Insurance Agency whom she worked for as well. Mrs. Applewhite was active in her community.
She was married to Charles Applewhite on March 14, 1946. After retirement, the couple worked as Helping Hands Volunteers, delivering Meals on Wheels.
She was known for her love of life, her positive attitude and her love of the Lord. She was a devout member of the Ozona Methodist Church.
Mrs. Applewhite was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Johnny Childress; a grandson, George Austin Preston; her parents, Modenia and Steve Coose and a sister, Jo Nell Corder.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Richard Preston of Eldorado; a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Shelley Applewhite of Hamilton; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Kip Nichols, also of Hamilton; grandchildren, Trey and Hunter Preston, Clifford and Emily Nichols, Derek Nichols, Randy Moore and Shannon Moore, Amberlie Applewhite, John Clayton and Megan Childress and Courtney Childress; great-grandchildren, Charles Russell Childress and John Cole Childress; a sister, Willa V. Baggett of Peach Tree, Ga; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Alex Applewhite of Hamilton, Billie and wife Mae Applewhite of Granbury; several nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friend Dorothy Friend of Ozona.
