Mrs. Banta
Alene Augusta Banta died June 7, 2002 at Forest Oaks Nursing Home. Funeral services were held June 9 at Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Walter Albers officiating. Burial was at Live Oak Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 23, 1914, the daughter of James C. Hyles and Winnie Chumney. She was married to George S. Banta on May 12, 1934. He preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1984.
Mrs. Banta was a long-time faithful member of the Littleville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters and an infant granddaughter, Linda Marie Banta.
Survivors include seven children, Marjorie Rudolph and husband Charles of Fort Worth, J.C. Banta and wife Pam of Asheboro, NC, Reba Johnson and husband Ray of Granbury, Ruth Zschiesche and husband Will of Burleson, Riley Banta and wife Carolyn of Brownwood, daughter and companion Nancy Banta of Hamilton, son, John Paul Banta and wife Cynthia of Waco.
Also, twelve grandchildren, Keith Rudolph of Fort Worth, Pattie Banta Davis, Jimmie Banta and wife Aimee, all of Asheboro, David Johnson and wife Bridget, John Johnson of Conchas Dam, Albuquerque, NM, Chris Johnson and wife Robin of Breckenridge, Colo., Kim Zschiesche Bell and husband Andy of Clifton, Karen Zschiesche Murray and husband Michael of Southlake, Donald Evetts and wife Lisa of Brownwood, Jessica Alene Banta Morgan and husband Dereck of Granbury, Jason Banta of Amarillo, Amy Banta of College Station;

Mrs. Chumney
Mary Katherine Clem Chumney, 87, died at Hamilton Hospital May 29, 2004. Funeral services were held June 1 at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Dick Stovall officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Chumney was born Feb. 6, 1917 in the Ohio Community near Evant, the daughter of DeWitt Clem and Jewell Sutton Clem.
She was married to W.W. (Kido) Chumney on Dec. 20, 1933 at Evant. He preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1987.
Mrs. Chumney was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
She worked at Perry’s Variety Store, Pattie’s of Texas, delivered the Fort Worth Star Telegram and worked at Hamilton Floral. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include four children, Wilma Drury of San Antonio, Anita Adams of Hamilton, Douglas Chumney of Fort Worth and Lonnie Chumney of Austin; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jo Sturdivant of Hobbs, New Mexico; two half-sisters, Diane Clem and Dora Gossage, both of California and one brother Al Talmadge Clem of Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two children, Dora Gholson and W.C. Chumney; two sisters, Margaret Mair and Nadine Stofa; two great-grandchildren, Leslie Jan Johnson and Marcus Layne Chumney and one half brother Gordon Clem.

Mrs. Craig
Nettie Louise Craig, 85, died in Austin July 17, 2004. Graveside funeral services were held July 20 in New I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Rev. Ken Craig officiating.
Miss Craig was born September 7, 1918 in Hamilton County, the daughter of Robert Elvin and Jeanetta (Nettie) Norilla Walker Craig.
She was a college graduate, receiving her degree from T.W.U. at Denton. She made her home in Dallas where she was a member of the Eastern Star, active in the Woman Republican League. She was also very active at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where she was an elder.
She worked as an executive secretary for the F.E. Biegert Co. that was later known as Know Tile Company until her retirement. She had made her home in Austin the past two years.
She is preceded her in death her parents and seven brothers.
Survivors include a brother A.B. (Andy) Craig of Killeen; a sister-in-law, Lucy Helen Craig of Houston and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Crane
Sylvia Ann Crane, 69, died after a courageous battle with lung disease on July 12, 2004. At her request, a private family service will be held later.
She was born Oct. 30, 1935 in Alvarado. She graduated from Alvarado High School and attended Texas Wesleyan College. She went to work for Southwestern Bell and retired as a supervisor after 28 years of service.
She was extremely outgoing, knew no strangers, loved to entertain guests and was a great cook. She was an avid reader, a master of crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing a variety of games.
While living in Hamilton, she did volunteer work for United Care and the Public Library. Her residences have included St. Louis, Houston, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Arlington, Hamilton and Cleburne.
Perhaps the greatest gift she left her children was the obvious love and devotion she had for her husband, Joe. She had a great passion for her friends, family and especially her grandchildren. Words are inadequate to express how much she will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar “Lefty” Sockwell and Ruth Sockwell.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Crane, who faithfully and unselfishly gave his time in constant care of his soulmate; daughters and sons-in-law, Christy and Danny Thacker, Helen and Pat Gibson and Cathy Harmon; grandchildren, Bryan and Lauren Thacker, Patrick, Michael and Jennifer Gibson and Scott Harmon; brother Don Sockwell of Huntsville; sister, Catherine Gilbert of Las Vegas, Nev.; a number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and a little dog named Pearl.

Mrs. Slone
Ola Bell Carter Slone, 85, died in Temple July 18. Funeral services were held July 19 in the Evant Funeral Chapel with Roy Shave and George Tolbert officiating. Burial followed in Kingsbury Cemetery.
She was born at home in Nacona on Oct. 7, 1918, the daughter of Walter Lee and Maggie Florence Honeycutt Carter.
She lived in the West Texas area until the age of ten when her family moved to Blair, Okla. She attended school and graduated in 1937, then went on to attend Altus Junior College.
While visiting her grandparents in Wilson, she met J.R. Slone on a blind date and they were married on Aug. 22, 1941 in Wilson.
After Mr. Slone was discharged from the Army in 1946 they farmed cotton in Wilson and started a family.
In 1951 they moved to Evant to ranch. Mrs. Slone worked at Inabnets Grocery and with Home Health. The couple later bought Inabnets Grocery in 1972 and ran it until 1975.
Mrs. Slone loved to cook for her kids and grandkids when they came to visit. She also loved to sew, crochet and quilt. She was a member of the Evant Church of Christ for almost 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Lee and Maggie Florence Carter and a brother, Thomas Alton Carter.
Survivors include her husband, J. R. Slone Jr. of Evant; a son, James Lee Slone and his wife Chyrl of Evant; a daughter, Sandra Florence Blansit and her husband Johnny of Goldthwaite; a brother, R.D. Carter and a sister, Velma Carter, both of Goldthwaite; five grandchildren, Shelly Wenmohs and Lance, James Slone and Misty, Justin Slone, Melissa Deweese and Tracy and Misty Ott and Clifton; nine great-grandchildren, James Warlick, Jadyn Deweese, Bridgett Blansit, Kelli and Coty Ott, Dixon and Slone Wenmohs and Shayna and Jace Slone.

Everett John (Blackie) Blackwell, 91, died July 19 in Hamilton. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. July 21 in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.
Mr. Blackwell was born in the Hurst Community near Star on Sept. 29, 1913 to early pioneers Boss John Blackwell and Lillian Walton Blackwell.
As a young man while still in school, he went to work as an auto mechanic. He continued to do mechanic work on automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment. He was a successful rancher, service station owner and operator and heavy equipment owner and operator doing a vast amount of stock pond building and other dirt work projects.
He was married to Veda Etheleen Boler in 1934. She preceded him in death on July 11, 1992.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nell Strickland.
Survivors include two children, James W. Blackwell of Hamilton and Patricia Ann Windham of College Station; seven grandchildren, James E. Blackwell, Phil Blackwell, Peter Blackwell, Mary Jackson, Sandra Windham, Brian Windham and Ray Windham; 11 great-grandchildren, John Blackwell, Jason Blackwell, Cheyenne Blackwell, James A. Blackwell, Tanner Blackwell, David Parrish, Sara Parrish, Carolyn Windham, Preston Windham, Riley Windham, Seth Windham and nephews, C.W. Strickland and Ken Nicholson.
Pallbearers will be Brian Windham, Ray Windham, James E. Blackwell, Peter Blackwell, David Parrish and James Allan Blackwell.

Mr. Vasser
Roy Durwood Vasser, 88, of Hamilton died July 10, 2004. Services were held July 13 at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Andy Bratcher officiating. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
He was born May 13, 1916 in Chilton, the son of Charles Gibson and Julie Tull Vasser. He was married to Gertrude Drews on March 10, 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marlin. Pastor Streater officiated.
They lived in Marlin until 1997 and then moved to Hamilton to be near their daughter Carol because of their declining health.
Mr. Vasser graduated from Chilton High School in 1935. He was employed by W.E. Shankle of Chilton from February 1936 until February 1942, working with crops and livestock. He also went to the South Western Aeronautical School in Dallas.
Mr. Vasser was a veteran of World War II and served between 1942 and 1946 in the Army air corps, receiving technical training and worked on P-38 fighter planes in 1944. He received an honorable discharge as a sergeant in the 51st. Fighter Squadron. He spoke much about his time serving in the Panama Canal Zone in 1945.
After his discharge, he bought a Farmall tractor and farmed in the Chilton area, working with cotton and corn. After marrying Gertrude, he went to work for his father-in-law, A.O. Drews and his brother-in-law Ben Drews, helping build many houses in the Marlin area. He also worked some years for Louis Rochell of Marlin. He retired as a maintenance man from the Marlin I.S.D. in 1990.
Mr. Vasser was known for his love of fishing in the Brazos River, especially his trot line catches, often bringing any excess to his friends along the way. He also loved to garden and raised big sweet potatoes and lots of red plums. He spent the last years of his time in Marlin volunteering by delivering food to shut-ins with the food kitchen at the First Baptist Church, where he had attended since 1969. He loved to attend Dr. Dwayne Fitte’s Bible class.
He spoke of a specific time when he asked Christ to come into his life at a Baptist summer tabernacle service in Chilton. He lived his life quietly, was a good husband and father and followed the verse in I Thess. 4:11 – “and that you study to be quiet and to do your own business and to work with your own hands as we commanded you.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Willy Vasser and his sisters, Luetta Douglas and Zoleta Reid.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Vasser of Hamilton; a son, Dr. Donald Vasser and wife Debbie of Waterflow, NM; a daughter, Carol Marie Radle and husband Paul Wayne of Hamilton; a brother, Hollis Vasser of Rosenthal; grandchildren, Sue Ann, Murray and Mindy Vasser of Waterflow, NM; Caleb Paul and Bethany Radle of Hamilton.
Pallbearers were his nephews.

Mathilda Alice Marwitz, 89, died in Lampasas July 25. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 28 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville with Pastor Perter K. Anderson officiating. Burial wilkl follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Marwitz was born June 8, 1915 in Washington County, the daughter of William Stegemoller and Henrietta Schultz Stegemoller.
On October 17, 1935 she was married to to Henry L. Marwitz. He preceded her in death on January 23, 1994.
Mrs. Marwitz was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Ella Hopper and Nelda Kunkel and one brother Roy Stegemoller.
Survivors include two children, a son Alton Marwitz and his wife Carole of Lampasas; a daughter, Linda Garza and her husband Marvin of Austin; five grandchildren, Greg Marwitz, Doug Marwitz, Glenn Garza, Lynnette May, Melannie Clack and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Roach
Rick D. Roach, 49, died July 26 in Wichita Falls. Funeral services were held July 30 at University United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls with additional funeral services at Pettit Baptist Church in Gustine with Rev. Ronnie Calcote officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Gustine.
He was born July 22, 1955 in Hico, the son of V. Leroy and Peggy (Jones) Roach. He was married to Marcene Luker on June 25, 2003 at Pettit Baptist Church in Gustine.
He was a graduate of Tarleton State University and a member of the Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Masons Texas Cattle Feeders Association and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association.
Mr. Roach was involved in banking, farming, ranching, commercial and residential properties and oil and gas production since 1977 and was involved in the development of First State Bank, Graham’s Possum Kingdom Lake Branch. He served as the CEO of the Production Credit Association and Federal Land Bank Association.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Mark Roach and his grandparents, Jake and Gertie Jones.
Survivors include his wife; parents; sons, Justin and Taylor Roach and stepchildren, Angela Gibbons and Kari and Luke Fanning and his brother, Craig Perkins.
