GLENDA OKERSTROM
Glenda Fay Meek Gay Okerstrom passed away from this life Saturday, November 13, 2004 at home. She was born March 1, 1936 in the little farming community of Floydada, Texas to Ollie and Opal Meek.
Glenda was brought up in Floydada, where she graduated from high school as salutatorian. Then she moved with Ollie, Opal and sister Joan to San Diego, Calif., a long time dream of hers. There she met and married Charles Gay. A few months later, she and Charles moved to Gainesville, Florida where Charles attended and graduated from the University of Florida.
A year was then spent in Akron, Ohio where Charles worked for Goodyear Tire and Glenda worked for Goodyear State Bank. Ohio wasn't their idea of a place to live so they returned to Fla. where they lived in Eau Gallie (presently Satellite Beach) and Charles worked for General Dynamics at Cape Canaveral. Charles Gregory Gay and Richard Allen Gay were born during this period. This marriage didn't work out, and Glenda married Charles Merald Okerstrom and they moved to Lompoc, Calif. where Charles "Chuck" worked for General Dynamics and Glenda for Crocker National Bank. Then Chuck obtained a position with Aerospace Corp. and they moved to Riverside, California where Glenda was transferred with Crocker Bank.
Aerospace moved to El Segundo, Calif., and so Chuck and Glenda also moved to nearby San Pedro, Calif., a sleepy little fishing village that is in the harbor of Los Angeles. At this point, Glenda was assistant manager in San Pedro. The traffic was horrific, so Chuck asked for and received a transfer to Cape Canaveral, Fla.
Glenda retired from banking at this point, and pursued "Duplicate Bridge" with a passion. She came within a few points of making life master before deciding that the stress and work of commuting to games wasn't worth it.
Next, Chuck and Glenda moved from their beachside condo in Cape Canaveral to a little home in Titusville where Chuck retired in 1988 and they spent six months of each year traveling, bird watching and taking in the fabulous scenery of the West. Then in 2003 the work started outstripping the pleasure, and they traded in their pickup and RV for a car and the comfort of staying home all year.
Glenda leaves her beloved husband, Chuck, two sons, Charlie and Rick Gay with wives Laura and Pattie, four grandchildren, Sunny and Skylar; Nicole and Patrick. Also, two stepsons, William Charles "Chuck" and Randy Paul Okerstrom, with wives Maureen and Mary , and grandchildren, Karen, Robbie and Jeff; and Keith, all of whom Glenda loves very dearly. That present tense is intentional; we do not believe that life and love ends just because we no longer have a body.
Glenda had an abiding faith in GOD, Jesus and His message in "A Course In Miracles" taught by Chuck since 1984. This philosophy teaches that there is no death, only a passage from one experience to another.
Memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday November 18th at Unity Church, 2000 South Street in Titusville.
North Brevard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
