A.B. Herring
July 26, 2004
CORRIGAN -- M.Sgt A.B. Herring (retired) of San Antonio was born on November 6, 1922 and died, Tuesday, June 29, 2004.
Funeral service was at Porter Loring Chapel in San Antonio with the Rev. Sue White officiating
A.B. Herring was born on November 6, 1922 in Benford, Texas to Bill and Daisy Herring. A.B’s family lived off the land by farming and hunting. His father was a Baptist preacher and he was raised in the Baptist faith. A.B. was the first of seven children and spent his childhood years growing in the Piney Woods of East Texas. He often told his children he attended a one-room school house and that he had to walk for miles to get there. Although A.B. never graduated from high school, he did obtain his GED and always stressed with his children the importance of education.
He left East Texas during the Great Depression at the very young age of 16. Although he didn’t meet the age requirements he managed to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. which he always referred to as Tree Monkey Camp. Work at the camps was centered on conserving our nation’s natural resources and introduced him to the world outside of the Piney Woods.
In 1942, A.B. joined the U.S. Army and spent the next 30 years of his life serving our country. He fought in Italy during World War II and also served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. The military provided an opportunity for A.B. to travel the world and he spent the majority of his time serving on foreign soil. During these assignments A.B. took the time to go outside the confines of the military and embrace the various cultures where he lived. He even learned to speak French while living in France and also German when stationed in Germany.
It was in Germany where he was to meet his bride, Hannelore, who also shared his love for travel. A.B. and his wife had four children and lived the typical military life of moving every two to three years until he retired from the military in San Antonio in 1972. After retiring from the Army, A.B. continued to work for several years before going into full retirement.Retirement for A.B. was not a quiet time. It was a time filled with helping raise grandchildren and traveling the world with his wife. Some of his fondest memories were those summer vacations when he and his wife would load up the RV and take their grandchildren Kristina, Brandon and Tammie with them. They traveled to many places across the United States...Colorado, New Mexico, Missouri, Arkansas, Florida and many other places.
When his granddaughter Megan was born in Australia he didn’t let the Pacific Ocean or an ailing heart prevent him from seeing his newest grandchild. He traveled to Australia at the age of 72 with Hannah where they cared for Megan for two months. While there he visited many parts of Australia. His most memorable part of the trip was doing a four-wheel drive to the top of the Snowy Mountains where he donned an Akubra Hat, a Dry as A Bone coat and sang Waltzing Matilda as he cooked billy tea over an open fire.
During the latter part of his retirement years A.B. took up goat ranching at his beloved El Rancho in Sisterdale. He spent many hours tending to his goats and sitting on his porch looking over the Texas Hill Country.
A.B. will be greatly missed by his wife Hannelore, his children Evelin, Ramona, Veronicka and Michael, his 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his sisters and many other relatives and friends but they know he is now in a better place and probably tending to a new herd of goats.
Mr. Herring was preceded in death by his parents, Daisy and Bill Herring; brother, Lloyd Herring; and sisters, Norma Dee Smith and Geneva Herring.
He is survived by his wife, Hannelore Herring, daughters, Evelin Turtzo and family, Romona Ball and family, Veronicka Maguire and family; and son, Michael Herring and family; sisters, Faye Smith, Bobbie Williams and Betty Perkins.
