E. Luise Hayward
Born in Heidelberg, Germany on Dec. 11, 1910

E. Luise Hayward, 92, formerly of Winfield, Kansas, died February 11, 2003 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born December 11, 1910 to Cora and James Parker Blunk in Heidelberg, Germany, where Dr. Blunk was engaged in postgraduate studies in eye, ear, nose, and throat specialties at the University of Heidelberg. Her family moved to Ottawa, Kansas where she graduated from Ottawa High School in 1924. Luise graduated from Ottawa University in 1932 with a B. S. degree in Zoology and from McCormick Seminary in Chicago, Illinois in 1933, earning an M.A. in Christian Education. She married Francis Hayward in 1935, and together they served Presbyterian pastorates in five Kansas communities including Winfield and Prairie Village (Johnson County). In 1958 she received certification as a medical technologist from St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and worked as a medical technologist at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City until 1963. Luise was an accomplished musician. She sang, played the violin and the viola, and directed children’s and adult choirs in a number of the churches she and her husband served. She was gifted in the arts of quilting, toll painting, sewing and needlepoint. In 1963 she and her husband became fraternal church workers in the West Indies for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and served the Church of Scotland in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica, where Luise played viola with the Jamaica National Symphony. Upon their retirement in 1976, Luise and her husband moved to San Antonio, Texas where she remained active for years, working in family businesses and singing in the choir at Madison Square Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. Luise is preceded in death by her husband, Francis H. Hayward. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Conners, Wichita, Kansas; one son, Bart Hayward and wife, Virginia, San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Jerry L. Copeland
Born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma on Nov. 29, 1935
Died Feb. 11, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.
Service: Thursday Feb. 13, 2003
My loving and devoted husband, Jerry L. Copeland, age 67, of San Antonio, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two of his brothers. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Copeland; son, Justin Copeland; children, Michael K. Copeland and his family, Sandy Copeland Hutton and her family, and Danny Copeland and his family; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry was a loving and caring man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Margaret P. Walton, age 78, died on Monday, February 10, 2003 in San Antonio, TX.
She was preceded in death by, her husband, Howard V. Walton.
She is survived by her children, Howard T. Walton and wife, Linda and Gary D. Walton and wife, Dorothy; grandchildren, Tommy Walton, Bobby Walton, Brian Walton and Elizabeth Walton, Christopher Graham, Tammy K. Deppe, Jason H. Blair, and James K. Blair.

Donald Edward Zboray
Born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania on Apr. 23, 1917
Died Feb. 12, 2003 and resided in New Braunfels, TX.

Donald Edward Zboray, age 85, passed away on February 12, 2003.
He was a retired Major of the U.S. Air Force and Veteran of World War II. He held a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration and was an Alzafar Shriner.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; four step-sons; three step-daughters; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Lt. Col. Jack H. Grizzard, U.S. Army (Ret.)
Born on Mar. 11, 1920
Died Feb. 10, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Jack H. Grizzard, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (ret.), died February 10, 2003, after a brief illness. Col. Grizzard was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on March 11, 1920 and grew up in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Trinity University in 1955. He entered the service in 1942, retiring in 1966. During his military career, he commanded every type of medical department unit, including a medical battalion, and received numerous awards and citations, including the Bronze Star for his service in the Korean Conflict. After his retirement, he continued to serve his country as a civilian employee, teaching medical field subjects, and was chief of the the correspondence course branch at the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston from 1970 until his retirement from Civil Service in 1983. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Katherine Cook Grizzard, of San Antonio. He is also survived by son Leon J. Grizzard, daughter Claire L. Ducker, granddaughters Katherine Gill, Eleanor Price, and Ocea Grizzard, and greatgrandsons Connor and Duncan Gill, all of Austin. He was preceded in death by granddaughter Anna Maria Price.

Elfriede M. Adkisson

Died Feb. 8, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Elfriede M. Adkisson of San Antonio, age 75, beloved wife and mother, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2003.
She was born in Eberstadt, Germany, December 30, 1927.
She married George Adkisson on October 7, 1974.
Elfriede was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Therese Meckel.
She is survived by her husband, George O. Adkisson of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Susan T. Paloczy of San Antonio, TX; brother, Helmut Meckel; sisters, Edith Owczarek and her husband Heinrich and Ilse Schmidt and her husband Rolf; numerous nieces and nephews, all of Germany.
The family would like to express special gratitude to Dr. Basel Dabas of Dabas Cancer Institute for all his help over the past 7 years.

LTC. A. W. (Al) Henzler USAF (Ret.), age 63 of San Antonio, TX died Thursday, February 6, 2003 of natural causes.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Vonne Nye and Blake; grandchildren, Rachael and Daniel Nye, all of Sterling Heights, MI; mother, Gertrude Henzler of Oklahoma City, OK; brother, Fred Henzler and wife Jeanette; nephew, Matthew Henzler, all of Arlington, VA; companion, Caryl Hill of San Antonio, TX.

Effie L. Sneckner
Born in Sayers County, Texas on Oct. 9, 1910
Died Feb. 7, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.
Effie L. Sneckner age 92, died Friday February 7, 2003. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and matriarch of four generations of offspring. Born in Sayers County in 1910, Mrs. Sneckner was raised and attended school in South Texas. She married her husband, of 51 years, in 1928 and they raised their family of three children in San Antonio.
During the World War II military service of her husband, Bill, Mrs. Sneckner worked for Western Union to support their family until his release from active duty and reemployment. In later years, after her husband had been transferred to Harlingen to manage the Rio Grande Valley branch of the Champion Paper Co. (later Bancroft Paper, Co.), Effie joined Bill in the principal management role within the branch office. Her skillful efforts contributed to a remarkable turn-around and the widely acknowledged success of the Harlingen branch.
Effie Sneckner received company wide recognition for her performance and the role that she played in the progress made by the company. She was known throughout by her colleagues and clients alike through the simple dictum that was her homespun code of business ethics, “If you can’t make it on the ‘Up and Up, ’ forget it!”
Effie and Bill returned to San Antonio upon their retirement from the Bancroft Paper Company in 1975 where they were welcomed home by dozens of their family and legions of old friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. (Bill) Sneckner, and daughter, Barbara Held. Effie is survived by son, Sunny Sneckner and wife Lova; daughter, Shirley Herres and husband Robert; son-in-law, Gene Held all of San Antonio, TX; eleven grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.

Efrain Morales Barrera
Born in Del Rio, Texas on Oct. 22, 1948
Died Feb. 7, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Efraín Morales Barrera, age 54 of San Antonio, died on Friday, February 7, 2003 as a result of an automobile accident in South Texas.
He was born in Del Rio, TX to Espectación and Guadalupe Barrera. He was a proud son of migrant farm workers. He graduated in 1967 from San Felipe High School. Mr. Barrera graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and was a devout Longhorn fan. He served as a VISTA Volunteer and was a strong advocate of the civil rights movement.
Mr. Barrera was a pioneer in the field of bilingual education and proudly served in that field for over 30 years. He was a lifelong educator, as well as a lifelong learner.
He was a kind and compassionate man with a loving and gentle spirit. His first love was his wife and his family. His charismatic personality attracted numerous friends. His other passion included caring for his many beloved pets.
He touched the lives of many and will always be remembered and loved.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Ana Isabel Barrera; his parents; and his two sisters, Emma B. Cervantes and Elsa Guadalupe Barrera. He is survived by his wife, Mary Barrera, daughter, Andrea Barrera Vazquez and husband Roland of San Marcos, TX; son, Tommy Felton, III and his wife Esmeralda and their daughter, Teresita all of Santa Teresa, NM; daughter, Lisa Felton of San Antonio; brothers, Espectación Barrera, Jr. and wife, Dora of Del Rio, TX, Enrique M. Barrera and wife, Leticia of San Antonio, Elliott Barrera and wife, Esmeralda of Ozona, TX; and Edmundo M. Barrera of Del Rio, TX; sisters-in-law, Diamantina Paolini of Arlington, TX and Hortencia Garcia and husband Roberto of San Antonio; brother-in-law, Nicolás Cantu of Del Rio, TX; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
