Essex C. Brooks passed on December 6, 2002. He was born January 11, 1923 in Anthony, New Mexico. He was the elder son of E.B. Brooks and Edmonia Boyer Brooks. He grew up in and around Las Cruces, New Mexico and graduated from Lincoln High School in Las Cruces. In 1943, he entered active military service with the U.S. Army. He served with the 1314th Engineer Regiment in the U.S. and Europe during World War II. He was wounded and discharged in 1946. He married Lula Lois Runnels in 1947, They were married for 28 years and three sons were born to this union, Karl, Wayne and Brian. He loved airplanes. He got a pilot’s license and worked as a commercial pilot in San Antonio. He worked at Kelly AFB for 39 years, retiring in 1986 as an Aircraft Maintenance Quality Inspector. After retirement, he remained extremely active with his church, traveling and spoiling his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Wayne Bernard Brooks in 1999. Survived by his sons, Brian E. Brooks, San Antonio, TX and Karl E. Brooks and his wife, Margaret, Texas City, TX; sister, Lareene Dixon and husband, Nathaniel, Stockton, CA; brothers, Alfonso Brooks and wife Shirley, Rio Linda, CA, James Cooper, Phoenix, AZ.

Milda Hofferichter Stolte
Born in Converse, TX on Jan. 26, 1917
Died Dec. 9, 2002 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Milda Hofferichter Stolte died peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2002 surrounded by her family. She was born on January 26, 1917 on a farm near Converse, Texas.
Milda lived an interesting and unusual life, being raised in a German farming community, speaking fluent German. She was an avid gardener, hard worker, gifted with needle and thread, and devoted to her family and volunteer work in her church, Christ Lutheran Church. She also completed writing and illustrating her autobiography, “Mein Leben” (My Life) in 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lina Hofferichter, her husband, George Hugh Stolte, her son-in-law, David McCaskill, her sister, Edna Schwab, her sister-in-law, Evelyn Stolte, and her brother-in-law, Ervin Buchholtz.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Stolte Bruton and Peggy McCaskill Foerster; sons-in-law, Tony Bruton and Paul Foerster; grandchildren, Scott McCaskill and wife, Heather, Robert Hugh Bruton, Cristin Lea McCaskill, and Elizabeth Aubrey Bruton; step grandchildren, Jill Foerster Clark and husband Reverend Bill Clark, David Foerster, Holly Foerster Kramaley and husband Nick. Step greatgrandchildren are Christopher, Annie, and Sam Clark. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Hugo C. Stolte Jr and Berta Schwab; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Buchholtz; and many friends and family.
The family thanks the many caregivers that gave tender loving care to Milda in her last years and days.

Joseph Andrew Hons
Born in Hobson, Texas on Aug. 8, 1918
Died Dec. 11, 2002 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Joseph Andrew Hons, age 84, died on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. He was born at home in Hobson, TX, August 8, 1918.
The oldest of eight children, parents Joseph Bedrick Hons and Mary Brigid Rohan. He married Edna Mary Jauer on August 20, 1949 St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson. They made their home in San Antonio, and had 52 years together before her death on October 5, 2001.
Joe graduated from Karnes City High School. As a young man of the Depression era, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was proud of the work he did in many of the Texas State Parks.
Joe worked at Kelly AFB for 38 years and was recognized for his meticulous work and attention to detail. He was a quiet, very intelligent, hardworking man. He loved to be outdoors, and his favorite family vacations were car trips taking Edna and Susie to places such as Big Bend National Park and Yellowstone National Park. He could fix anything, and enjoyed tinkering in his workshop.
A devout Catholic, he grew up attending St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson, and in San Antonio he and his family attended, St. Cecelia’s, St. Margaret Mary’s and lastly, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Leon Springs. He always volunteered at church, as an usher, and also delivering food from the Food Bank.
Over the years, he was active in many church organizations, such as the Parish Council, Mens Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by daughter, Susie, son-in-law, Frank D. Goza, grandson, Eric Goza; brother, Vincent Hons and wife, Grace; sisters Martha Fey, Esther Nester and husband Johnny, Elizabeth Dziuk, and Mary Jarzombek and husband Joe; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends will miss him.
His family gives a special thanks to the four wonderful caregivers who made this last year a good one. Also thank you to Christus Santa Rosa Hospice.

Sam McClung
Born in Ochiltree Coounty, TX on Apr. 30, 1915
Died May. 9, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Sam McClung, age 88, of San Antonio, died Friday, May 9, 2003 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was a fine gentleman with compassion for his fellow men. A person who left you feeling better than when he arrived. Sam was a graduate of Perryton, TX high school. He attended McMurry College in Abilene, TX when he earned two degrees. He did graduate work at West Texas State where he also earned his private pilot’s license for small planes. Sam spent 36 quite successful years with the Federal Government in Washington D.C. When the agency was transferred to Cincinnati, Ohio in World War II he was there for a year, also spent a year in New York City and one year in Dallas, Texas and 4 years in Battle Creek Michigan with Fed- Civil Defense when transferred there. Sam is listed in Who’s Who in the SW. He did his civic duties and more. And one day he retired from employment and enjoyed a different life. He retired in 1971 and in 1978 moved to San Antonio because no snow and ice was here. He was a man of many hobbies, including, Golf and photography. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Reba McClung.

Lee Ellis Shivel, age 81, died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at Methodist Hospital, San Antonio, Texas.
He was born in McAllister, Oklahoma on August 12, 1921, and grew up in San Antonio. He graduated from Texas A&M; College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He went into the Army Air Corps in January 1942 as a cadet and served as an officer during World War II. He was attached to the 345th Bomb Group, 500th Squadron (Air Raiders). He worked with Monsanto for 15 years. He retired from S.I.P. (Parsons International) in Houston, Texas after 25 years of service.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Masonic Lodge # 189 A.F and A.M., San Antonio A&M; Club, and the 500th Bomb Squadron Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Clemmie Holt Shivel; and sister, Margaret Shivel Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vera; nieces, Margaret Ann Davis and husband, Chester Tiseth, Linda King and husband, Craig; nephews, Roland Davis and wife, Debbie, and Ben F. Davis and wife, Susan; brother-in-law, Glenn Harris and wife Kathryn; 11 great nieces, 1 great nephew, 4 great great nieces and 7 great great nephews.

Thomas James Hebert, age 48, of San Antonio, entered into eternal rest Sunday, May 4, 2003, with his family at his side.
He is survived by: his loving son, Matthew Thomas Hebert; his beloved parents, Dr. Thomas and Reva Hebert; brother, J. Randall Hebert; and cherished sister, Patricia D’Ann Frazor; nieces, Candace, Chelsea and Stephanie Frazor; and dear friend, James S. Pacheck, all of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Hebert.

John Wayne Scott

John W. Scott, age 48, of San Antonio, died Monday, August 19, 2002 after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was a member of Cornerstone Church. J.W. was a 1978 graduate of Texas Tech University and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) Fraternity. He had been employed by Frost Bank as Senior Vice President in Corporate Support. John was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Neal Scott in 1990 and father, Wayne Scott in 1963. He is survived by wife, Olivia L. Scott; son, John “Jack” Scott; brother, James B. Scott; nephews, Austin and Travis; cousins and numerous friends.The Rev. B.A. Levine officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Austin Scott, Travis Scott, Carlos Lopez and Joe Lopez. John composed his own eulogy and to quote him, “Life is a wonderful thing! I have had a life full of wonderful experiences and fun and very few regrets.”

Claudia Riggs Collins
Born in Uvalde, Texas on Jan. 11, 1905
Died Feb. 15, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Claudia Riggs Collins entered heaven on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at the age of 98.
She was preceded in death by Hobart Riggs, husband of 51 years; and Carlos Collins, husband of 7 years; granddaughter, Shirley Mason; and great-granddaughter, Tanaya Otterpohl; and longtime friend, Harold Wilson.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie and husband, Lucky Stokes of San Antonio, Frances and husband, Jim Young of Houston, Arlene and husband, Ted Sellars of San Antonio; 5 grandchildren, Tom Otterpohl, Jay Young, Gay Young Sharman, Jeff and Brad Sellars; 13 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren.
She was a faithful servant of the Christian faith, past-president of the Ladies Society of Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen Lodge #381, and a life member of the PTA.
The family expresses great appreciation to the staff of The Heights Assisted Living and VistaCare Hospice.
