Ana Maria Perez-Escudero, born August 9, 1917 in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, passed away January 3, 2003. She was the founding president of the Club Damas de Puerto Rico en San Antonio and was recently honored at their 25th Anniversary Gala Ball. She was also an honorary member of the Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Other affiliations include the Marianist Mothers Club, San Antonio Women ‘s Federation and the Council of International Relations. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Edmundo. She is survived by her four children and their families: Edmund Escudero and his spouse Mary Ann O’Donnell-Escudero of Cincinnati, OH, and their children Jamie, Mia and Marisa; Emilio Escudero and his spouse Tani Fernandez of Berkeley, CA and their children Andrea and Chris Carroll, Diego and Sofia; Edna Escudero-Boggess of San Antonio and her children, Jennifer and Fred Garza, Jonathan and Kara Boggess, Joey Boggess and Hallee Martin; Ana Maria (Nita) Escudero-Hotard and her spouse Rick Hotard of San Antonio and their children, Anne Marie and Lee Weldon, Rickey, Christy, Katie and Teresa and a great-grandson, Zachary Edmundo Garza. She is also survived by her brother Jesus Perez-Mandez of Catano, Puerto Rico, two sister-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Elaine Small, age 84, of San Antonio, died Thursday, January 9, 2003.
Mrs. Small was a member of Congregation Temple Beth El. For 55 years she and her husband owned and operated the Trading Post in Bandera, and will be remembered for her sense of humor and love of travel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A.B. Small. Survivors: sons and wives, Bill Small and Melanie of Houston, and John Small and Marsha, of London; sister, Jewel Hoffman, San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Jennifer Small, Stephanie Friedman, Dan Small and Shana Small.

Catherine Ann Gramling, a Registered Pharmacist, age 41, lost a 30 year fight with diabetes on Thursday, January 9, 2003. Cathy graduated with honors from Churchill High School in 1979. She attended Texas A & M and graduated from the University of Texas School of Pharmacy at Austin, in 1985. She was the first Staff Pharmacist hired at St. Rose Hospital. Cathy was the beloved daughter of Robert and Patricia Gramling; sister of Ray, Rob, Jon, Mark, Karl and Molly. Cathy is survived by six nephews and nieces, Chris, Matt, Meagan, Mason, April and Zachary. Catherine was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Roy Nice

Roy Allen Nice, age 56, born to Frank Allen and Murian Stafford Nice, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 9, 2003. He was a longtime resident of Houston, TX. Roy graduated from Lamar High School in 1965, received his Bachelor Degree at Texas Weslyn in Ft. Worth, TX. Roy was an Agent with Farmer’s Insurance Group for the past 10 years in San Antonio, TX. He was preceded in death by his mother, Murian Stafford Nice. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Vickie Nice of San Antonio, TX; daughters, Lisa Molina and Lucetta Boulware both of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Thomas Molina, Isabella Molina and Joshua Johnson, all of Austin, TX; father, Frank Allen Nice and wife, Yvonne of Lafayette, LA; and sister, Brenda Nice Croom of College Station, TX.He had a great love for his family, cruising the world and his dogs.

Mike Blackwood, age 41, of San Antonio, died on January 5, 2003.
Born in Houston Texas, Mike was an undergraduate of Texas Tech University and received an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Mike was a commercial real estate broker with Grubb and Ellis Company and is a member of CCIM.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and past vestry member.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Blackwood; son, Thomas Blackwood; daughter, Meredith Blackwood, all of San Antonio; parents, George and Corky Blackwood, of Bellaire, TX; sisters-in-law, Kathy Miller McMahon and her husband, Clay, and Janice Miller, all of San Antonio; brothers-in-law, Rick Miller and his wife, Suzanne of St. Louis, MO, and Greg Miller and his wife, Rochelle, of Saginaw, MI; nephews and niece, Scott, Chris, Brian, Ashley, Caden, Jared, Brandon and Evan.

Ella Person, age 80, died on Thursday, January 9, 2003 in San Antonio, TX.
Ella was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church.
In 1985, she retired after 25 years from Federal Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Almer Lavoy Person; and her granddaughter, Kimberley Lynn Laurie.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lea Laurie and husband, Robert of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Doctor Scot Laurie and wife, Doctor Louba Laurie; and Todd L. Laurie; sister, Johnnie Marie Waber; several nieces and nephews.

Rosa Williams Asher, age 74, born March 11, 1928, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2003 in San Antonio.
She was preceded in death by her son, Buddy Fosler.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her daughters, Amber Kostenbader, Kathleen Cruz, Nolaine Dillon, Beth Lopez, and Robin Fosler; her sons, Chris Fosler, Gary Fosler and William Fosler; and their families.
Sam Raymond Nelson

Sam Raymond Nelson passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at the age of 85. He was born on November 25, 1917 in San Antonio, TX, to Frank C. Nelson and Birdie Kaufman Nelson.
He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1935. Thereafter, he attended St. Mary’s University and played football pursuant to an athletic scholarship. However, after one year, he left college because his Uncle Gene and Aunt Anna Lewenthal needed his help in their small but growing business, Joykist Candy Company.
In 1942, he was drafted into the Army and was sent to England. In 1943, he graduated from OCS and took command of a transportation unit supplying bombs and ammunition to air wings flying missions over Germany. After D-day, his unit moved to France and then eventually to Germany.
He returned to San Antonio in 1946 and resumed working at Joykist. In 1947, he married
Augusta “FiFi” Fitzsimon, who passed away in January 1986. They had four children, Patricia, Sam Jr, Joan and Margaret. In the years that followed his return from World War II, he continued to work at Joykist, and also was a referee at high school football games for nearly 30 years. His aunt and uncle passed away and Sam became President of Joykist. Under his direction the company continued to grow and became one of the largest wholesale distributors to convenience and grocery stores in South Texas.
In 1989, Sam sold the family business to GSC, a national distributor, and he retired. During 1990, at a class reunion, he became re-acquainted with Hazel Astin Buchanan, whom he knew in high school. She was a widow and they began seeing each other. They were married
in September 23, 1990. He enjoyed his retirement years traveling, attending activities of his and Hazel’s grandchildren, golfing and having fun with family and friends. He was a member of the Laurel Heights United Methodist Church and was a faithful attendee at Sunday worship services. He was also a member of the K Supper Club, Vice President of the Businessmen Dinner Club, Treasurer of the Friendship Forum/Aldergate Sunday School Class, and a member of the Double Nickel Club.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Louis K. Nelson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, Hazel Nelle Nelson; daughters, Patricia Du Terroil and her husband, Jerry of San Antonio, Joan Nelson of Wellington, Florida, and Margaret “Peggy” Nelson of San Antonio, TX; son, Sam “Bubba” Nelson, Jr of Marathon, Florida; grandsons, Gennaro Du Terroil and wife, Jacqueline and great-granddaughter, Isabella of Ann Arbor, MI, Jason Du Terroil and his wife, Sara of Glasgow, Scotland; granddaughter, Ginger Meehan and her husband Mike, and great grandchildren, Trey, Elizabeth and Amy of Marietta, Georgia; nephews, Louis Nelson and his wife, Ann of San Antonio, TX, Clark “Corky” Nelson and his wife, Judy of Belton, TX, and Richard Nelson and his wife, Pat of San Antonio, TX; his life long friend John “Bubba” Reeves and his wife, Marion of San Antonio, TX; stepchildren, Nelle Buchanan Still and husband, Don of Wimberly, TX, Albert Bill Buchanan of Dallas, TX, and Barbara Buchanan Walski and husband, Peter A. of Chino Hills, CA; 7 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great grandchildren
Frank Manuppelli

Frank Manuppelli, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2003.
He attended Jefferson High School, University of Texas, Engineering, Hampden Sydney, Engineering, and St. Mary’s School of Law. He served in the U. S. Navy in World War II.
Mr. Manuppelli was a Special Agent of FBI, Personnel Director for the City of San Antonio, General Manager of Howard Areo, General Manager and Executive Vice President of HemisFair and Executive Vice President of Ellison Industries. He served as Chairman of San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Brotherhood Award for the National Association of Christians and Jews and Chairman of Firemen’s and Policemen’s Civil Service Commission for 22 years. Mr. Manuppelli was President of San Antonio Homebuilders Association, Life Director of National Homebuilders Association, Chairman of Development Board of Incarnate Word College, Founding Member of Bexar County Hospital District, Chairman of Ex-FBI Agents Association, President of San Antonio Golf Association and Director of PGA Seniors Tour and promoted it to a $1, 000, 000 purse and many other boards too numerous to mention.
Mr. Manuppelli was predeased by his son, Stephen and his parents, Col. Daniel Manuppelli and Ora Hogan Manuppelli. Survivors: wife, Lauretta; children, son, Jeffrey and wife, Sara; daughter, Laura and husband, James; grandchildren, Isabella and Jake; brothers, Daniel and Mike; sisters-in-law, Kelly Manuppelli and Elinor Buschell; cousin, Martha; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family’s deepest gratitude goes to Dr. Thomas O’Neil, Dr. Robert Schnitzler, Dr. Susan Diamond and the staff of the North Central Dialysis Center.
