TSGT Stephen E. Van Sant passed away on September 20, 2002 at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He spent 21 years in the Air Force as an operations specialist. He was the son of Col. and Mrs. Edward R. Van Sant U.S.A.F. (RET) now living in AF Village II in San Antonio, TX. He also has a son A/lC Michael Van Sant now in the Air Force; also a sister Patricia Van Sant now living in Dallas, TX.
Otto Wick, Jr.

Otto Wick, Jr., age 74, passed away on August 1, 2002, after a valiant fight with Leukemia. Otto, born in New York City, moved to San Antonio at the age of 11. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, he began working at the San Antonio Light Newspaper as a copyboy in 1945. What started as a summer job became a lifetime career. Otto was never able to get the ink out of his blood and worked at the San Antonio Light while attending business classes at St. Mary's University. He married
Dolores Winters in 1950, and continued to work at the Light in Classified Advertising Sales. In 1953 through 1955, Otto served active duty military service in the U.S. Army Reserve in Metz, France. While in France, he was an editor for the "Stars & Stripes" Armed Forces newspaper covering U.S. Army news throughout Europe. In addition, he was a member of the ADSEC Com Z five-man sharp shooter rifle team, winning first place in the USAREUR championships two years in a row. Upon returning from France, Otto worked for two years in Retail Advertising Sales at the San Antonio Light. From 1957-1962, he was the Regional Sales Manager for Central Distributing Co., but returned again to the Light to become Assistant Advertising Manager, Retail Advertising Manager, Advertising Director, and Assistant to the Publisher. In 1981, Otto and his wife, Dolores, moved to Edwardsville, Illinois, where he became Publisher of the Edwardsville Intelligencer. After four years in Illinois, they moved to Midland, Michigan, where he became the Publisher of the Midland Daily News until his retirement in 1995. Otto gave a great deal of his time, talents, and energy to every community in which he lived. While in San Antonio he was President of the Texas Newspaper Advertising Managers Association, Director of Mid-West Advertising Managers Association, and President of Bexar County Arthritis Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Baptist Memorial Hospital, the San Antonio Cancer Society, and United Way. In addition, in 1980 he was honored as Ambassador of the Year for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. In Edwardsville, Otto served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was active on the Advisory Board of the University of Southern Illinois, Advisory Board Chairman of the Y.M.C.A., and was the Director of Economic Development of Edwardsville Advisory Council. In Michigan, Otto served as President of Michigan League of Home Dailies, was on the Advisory Board of the Inland Daily Press Association, Membership Chairman for the Michigan Press Association, and was an active member on the Advisory Board of the American Legion of Michigan. His contributions to the Midland community included: sponsor of "Matrix Midland", an annual spring Arts and Entertainment Festival, membership on the Board of Directors of Midland Junior Achievement, Board of Directors of United Way, Midland Music Society, Salvation Army, and Midland Literacy Council. Also, he spearheaded and organized for six years the "Hole in One" Charity Golf Tournament for the Midland Medical Center. For nine years in a row, Otto was asked to represent the Hearst Corporation at the American Legion Annual Convention where he spoke and presented the William Randolph Hearst Americanism Award. Otto became a Rotarian in Edwardsville, Illinois in 1981, then transferred his membership to the Midland Rotary Club in 1985 where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1995. After his retirement as a Publisher for the Hearst Corporation, he and his wife, Dolores, returned to San Antonio in 1997 where he became a member of the Downtown San Antonio Rotary Club, and the Cadillac Men's Club. Otto was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman, and shared his love and appreciation of the outdoors with his family and friends. He never met a stranger, and his bright blue eyes saw the value of every person. He will be remembered for his joy of life, his sense of humor and his stalwart courage in coping with his illnesses. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dolores, three children: Steven and his wife, Annette, their children, Lindsay and Evan; Christopher, his wife, Lucinda, and son, Benjamin; Julianne and her son, Jordan; his sister, Marga Perry and her husband, Ernest; sister-in-law, Drucilla Wick; two nieces, Denise Wick and her son, Lucas, and Verneda Fike, her husband, George, and their sons, Robert and Stephen. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elsa and Otto Wick Sr., and his brothers, Richard Wick and Fred Wick. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice San Antonio, the Leukemia Society, and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Debra Lynn Obriotti, age 48, passed away July 31, 2002, after a short illness. She was a resident of Dallas, TX, where she recently celebrated her 20th anniversary with Club Corp. She was a loving and caring person and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Patricia Obriotti and Andrew A. Obriotti. Debra is survived by her brother, Andy Obriotti; sisters, Pamela Elkins and husband, Darrell, Diana Kay Burks and husband, Robert, both of Kingwood, TX; nieces and nephews, Jason, Jeffrey and Jonathan Elkins, Christopher and Jennifer Burks, Angela Burke and husband, Brad, Lauren Obriotti and Andrew Obriotti, Jr.; grandnephew, Blake Burke.

Diana Marie Clanton passed away on Saturday, August 10, at the age of 80. She was born in Laredo, Texas, on June 22, 1922, to Peter and Jovita Coussoulis. Diana was preceded in death by her beloved husband of Fifty-five years, Lt. Col. David L. Clanton. Diana was a very loving mother and grandparent and is survived by her three daughters, Diana Hughes and Geraldine Clanton of San Antonio and Jane Clanton Bick of Austin; her two sons-in-law, Steven Hughes and Theodore Bick. Diana’s three grandchildren are Tamara Boomer Slowey of Kenner, LA, John Dustin Vollmer of Savannah, GA and Cassandra Marie Bick of Austin. She also had two step-grandchildren, Jacquline and Michael Hughes of San Antonio. Diana became a great-grandmother on July 18th with the birth of her first great grandchild, Amanda Leigh Slowey of Kenner, LA. As the wife of a career Army officer, Diana lived in Kansas, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Panama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Taiwan, Louisiana and Texas. She was a meticulous homemaker, avid golfer, and bridge enthusiast and shared ranch work with her husband for many years on their “OK Corral” near Poth, Texas. Diana was a longtime member of the Brackenridge Women’s Golf Association and received awards for her two “holes in one”. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a very engaging and gracious presence. Diana was also a devout Catholic and had been a member of St. Pius X, St. Thomas More and St. John Neumann parishes. The family extends special appreciation to Julia Santiago and Susan Doane for their years of loving and devoted care for Diana during her extended illness.

Alfred “Al” J. Froelick of San Antonio, age 71 died Friday, August 9, 2002. Al was an active member of Church of God Fellowship in San Antonio and served as their Treasurer for many years. He is survived by his wife, Pauline “Scottye” Froelick, Al and Scottye celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on August 3rd; daughter, Rhonda Coston and husband, Scott; grandchildren Lisa Schemm and husband David, Lane Coston and Lyle Coston; great grandchildren, Clay and Luke Schemm; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 o’clock until 9 o’clock at Porter Loring.

Ellen E. Austin, age 86, of San Antonio died August 10, 2002. Her husband, William Boyd Austin, preceded her in death on April 11, 1988, after 54 years of marriage. Ellen was born in Gardendale, Texas and lived most of her life in San Antonio. She was an energetic homemaker who was very involved with her family and enjoyed traveling and entertaining family and friends during the holidays, especially Christmas. Her home was always full of welcoming warmth and was the familiar gathering place for many, many years. She was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Texas Chapter No. 35 O.E.S., N.A.R.V.R.E., and the Girl Scouts of America/Silver Trefoil. She will be missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Ellen Crowe of Hilton Head, South Carolina and Kathleen Dawn James and her husband John of San Antonio, Texas, four grandchildren, Eric Crowe and wife Michelle of Knoxville, Tennessee, Dawn Crowe of Dallas, Texas, Megan James, and Cody James of San Antonio, Texas; one great grandson, Quillan Crowe of Knoxville, Tennessee; one sister, Lynn Warlick and husband Darwin of Granbury, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.) Nicholas Philip Obzut died on December 7, 2002 at the age of 70, after a long illness. Lt. Col. Obzut was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and George Washington University. He was a 21-year veteran of the United States Air Force, serving posts at the Pentagon, in the Strategic Air Command, overseas in Japan, Vietnam and Thailand; and in the Security Service here in San Antonio. Originally from Waymart, Pennsylvania, Lt. Col. Obzut and family made their home in San Antonio, after his last assignment at Kelly AFB. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in real estate with the Guy Chipman Company and Century 21. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy Carol Obzut; his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and John Judson, San Antonio; his son, Paul William Obzut of Austin; and two grandchildren, Andrew Nicholas Judson and Katherine Marie Judson of San Antonio.

Virginia Dawkins Fishel, age 82, passed away December 10, 2002. Virginia spent her life first as a devoted mother and wife of a career Air Force officer and secondly as a schoolteacher in Charleston, South Carolina and San Antonio, Texas. She attended public schools in Columbia, SC and graduated from Columbia College. Her daughter, Virginia Lynn, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Col. Martin D. Fishel Jr., along with her children Martin D. Fishel III, and Rita M. Stroud, grandchildren James S. Stroud, and Daniel L. Stroud, and sons-in-law Dwight S. Stroud and Gary M. Strickland. There will be visitation at Porter Loring Mortuary from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 12, 2002. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Saint Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Regent Care Center for their loving care and attention during her illness. Memorial contributions may be made to the American cancer Society or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Nicholas G. Melvin, age 49, of Schertz, TX, born April 30, 1953 in Boston, MA, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2002, in San Antonio, TX.
Nicholas graduated from John Marshall High School and received his Masters Degree from Trinity University.
He was employed by Century 21 United Action Realty and active in St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Lawrence Melvin of Schertz, TX; parents, Dr. Walter W. Melvin, Jr. and wife, Phyllis D. Melvin of Fort Collins, CO.
