Louis F. “Lou” Droll, Sr., Major, USAF (Ret) was born in Boscobel, Wisconsin. He attended elementary and high school in Illinois where he lettered in five different varsity sports. He furthered his education at the University of Southern California and extension courses towards a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He was drafted into the Army in 1941, and was accepted in Aviation Cadets in 1942. He graduated as a P-38 Fighter Pilot and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. His distinguished flying career included 35 combat missions with the 8th Air Force in B-17’s, missions during the Berlin Airlift, special missions with the Nevada Atomic Tests Program in 1957, advancement to Command Pilot, Flight Instructor, Instrument Check Pilot, and piloted VIP personnel such as Associate Chief Justice Robert Jackson, Allied Prosecutor at Nuremberg Trials (1946-1947), over Europe. During his Air Force career he piloted the P-38 Lockheed Lightening, C-54 Cargo/Passenger, B-25 Billy Mitchell Bomber, C-47 (DC-3) Cargo, and the B-17 Boeing Bomber. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, and other awards. After retiring from the Air Force in 1961, he joined American Founders Life Insurance Company in 1965, joined Jefferson Pilot Insurance Company as a General Agent in San Antonio. He received numerous Company honors and awards from Jefferson Pilot and was a life member of the prestigious Million-Dollar Roundtable. He was active in support of the community as a member of the Northside Lions Club. He served on the Board, was a Melvin Jones Fellow, Lion of the Year in 1978, and Lion Citizen of the Year in 1980. He was directly involved with the Battered Women’s Shelter for Bexar County, Volunteers in Probation, and Full Gospel Business Man’s Fellowship International. He attended church over the years at Churches of Christ, Revival Temple, and Cornerstone Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Catherine Droll, and his sisters, Barbara Harris, and Lois Wikert. He is survived by his four children: daughters, Catherine Davis and husband, Jim of Boerne, TX and grandchildren Jimmy and Stephanie Davis and great grandchild, Brendan; Jonathan and Danielle, Cynthia Edwards and husband, Don of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and grandchildren, Traci Beth, Christopher and Leigh. Constance Beth and family. Louis Walter Droll and wife, Jeannette; and grandchildren, Benjamin and Kelsey; sister Ruth Meredith of Ottawa, Illinois and brother-in-law, Frank Harris also of Ottawa, Illinois, also Betty McKamy; of Ottawa, Illinois; niece Margie; nephew, Bruce Lewellyn, of Seal Beach, California. James Marvin Boring passed away Sunday, September 22, 2002, at the age of 89. Marvin was born November 28, 1912 in Zwolle, LA and lived most of his life in San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olga Mae Boring and his son-in-law, Donald L. Smith. He is survived by his children, Barbara Ann Smith, Mary Jane and Ed Briggs, and Jim and Joyce Boring; his grandchildren, Clint and Rhea Smith, Tom and Liz Rock, Roger and Colleen Briggs, Laney Smith, Mike and Andrea Boring, Cara West and Jeanette Boring. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Katy and Rachel Smith, Lucas Rock, Cheyenne and Chantry West, Elyse and Ethan Briggs and many other relatives and friends. Marvin was known as a master mechanic, loved hunting and fishing, was an avid bowler and loved his motorcycle. On September 20, year of our Lord 2002, the soul of our beloved Ernestina R. Garcia was received in heaven to the open arms of God our Father and Jesus Christ. Born on March 2, 1919 to Alonzo Rodriguez and Francisca Perez, in Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, Ernestina was the eldest of eight siblings. As the eldest she shared with her father the daily operations of running a farm. At an early age she showed accomplishment in business, mathematics, and a marked compassion for her fellow man, sacrificing her needs for the greater good of her siblings, parents, neighbors and strangers. In 1947 Ernestina came to Uvalde, TX to seek a better life for herself and family. Upon becoming a resident of the United States she immigrated her siblings to the United States, assisting them in setting their own businesses. Long before the women’s movement, Ernestina became an accomplished business woman, owning her own battery shop, restaurant and apartment complex. She was preceded in death by her parents Alonzo Rodriguez and Francisca Perez, brother Hugo Alonzo Rodriguez, and husband Frank Warren Garcia. She is survived by her daughter Mayla S. Juarez; sisters Juanita Rojas and husband Alberto, Diamantina Rios and husband Rev. Ramon Rios, Evangelina Ascencio and husband Jesus, Sylvia Rodriguez; brothers Ernesto Rodriguez and wife Felicia, Alonzo Rodriguez and wife Mary, and Hector Cesar Rodriguez and wife Noemi, numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Monday (9/23) evening from 6 o’clock until 9 o’clock at Porter Loring.

Brig. Gen. James Sykes Billups, Jr. U.S. Army (Ret.) of San Antonio, born on July 21, 1918 in Columbus, Mississippi died at the age of 84 on Saturday, September 21, 2002 at home. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point – Class of 1939. He was one of a select few military officers appointed by General Dwight Eisenhower, then President of Columbia University, to complete the Masters Program in International Affairs. During his many years in the military he received the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal With Cluster, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-American-Middle Eastern Campaign (5 Bronze Stars), Croix de Guerre (France), Croix de Guerre (Luxembourg), WW II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Department of Defense Identification Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Office of the The Secretary of Defense Identification Badge and the Order of Ulchi (Korea) In 1991, he was honored in Chartres, France for having been instrumental in saving the Cathedral from destruction during WWII. Some of the different organizations that he was involved with was the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Metropolitan Club (New York), The Argyle Club (San Antonio) Doubles (New York) Spouting Rock (Newport), Rolling Rock (Ligonier, PA), Club Giraud (San Antonio), San Antonio Country Club (San Antonio), Joshua Creek Club (San Antonio), Confrerie Des Chevaliers du Tastevin (San Antonio), and the Order of the Alamo (San Antonio). Survivors include his wife, Frances; one son James S. III and wife, Nancy, of San Antonio; four daughters, LeAnn Billups, Austin, Liza Lewis and husband, Jack, III, of San Antonio; Francesca Mannix and husband, John, of San Antonio, Marcella Symington and husband, Fife, Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren, Fannie, Sallie and A.J. Tom Rowan, age 72, of San Antonio, died on Saturday, September 21, 2002. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and the University of Texas in Austin, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. During the Korean War, he served on a carrier with the U.S. Navy. He was the owner of Rowan Lumber Company in Karnes City, TX and Rowan Home Center in Victoria, TX, and on the Board of the Texas Lumbermen Association. He was a residential and commercial builder for 30 years. Most recently he was self-employed as a commercial real estate broker. Tom was an avid tennis player. Ed Rowan, his son, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Bettye Sue Rowan; children, Fran Walter and Susan Rowan; grandchildren, Leigh Rowan, Chase Rowan, Ed Walter, Ethan Walter and Allison Walter; and brother, Jack Rowan.

Harold L. Morris of San Antonio passed away on September 12, 2002 at the age of 74. He was born in Chilton County, Alabama on January 27, 1928 to Durvie and R.C. Morris. He joined the Alabama National Guard in 1944 and later transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1946. He retired from the United States Air Force in June 1970. Harold was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Wayne, both parents, a sister, Myra and brother Amos. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Eva Morris; daughter, Colleen Edgecomb and husband, Raymond of San Antonio; son, Harold (Pete) and wife, Laurie of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Mabel of Montgomery, AL; brother, Virgil of Verneba, AL. Harold worked until he became ill for the law firm of David Carter and later for his son Paul Carter.
