Berniece Sullivan
Berniece Sullivan was born in Lone Star, Texas, on Jan. 21, 1919, to Walter and Ina Mae Baldwin Wilkinson. She passed away at her home in Scurry on March 4, 2003.
Berniece was raised in Kaufman and attended nursing school at Charity Hospital in Shreveport. She met John Sullivan, and they were married
on Feb. 5, 1947, in Kaufman. They moved to Dallas in 1955.
After 20 years at Gaston Episcopal Hospital, she retired as night supervisor and moved to Scurry, continuing her service on a volunteer basis with the Hospice VNA. She attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Scurry.
Berniece is survived by her husband, John William Sullivan of Scurry; sons Bill Sullivan and his wife Terri of Sylvan Beach, N.Y., and Wayne Sullivan and his wife, Rosemary, of Scurry; sisters Mary Jane May of Houston, Ima Jean Steward of Mineral Wells and Josephine McGowan of Shreveport; grandchildren Greg Sullivan, Michael Sullivan and Mark Sullivan; great-grandchildren Heather Sullivan and Nicklaus Sullivan.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. Garris Baggett officiating, and interment followed in Morrow Chapel cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
Homer H. “Bud” Brooks
Homer H. “Bud” Brooks was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Dallas to Homer Sr. and Dottie Brasher Brooks. He died on Aug. 9, 2003, in Kaufman.
Bud was raised on his family’s farm in the Jiba community. He attended schools in Jiba and then Kaufman. Not being especially fond of farm life, he joined the Navy and entered World War II as soon as he could talk Mom and Dad into signing papers for him.
He married
Betty Jean Doggett on Jan. 22, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. They shared 49 years and together retired from the military in 1972.
Bud is survived by his wife, Betty; son Michael Alan and wife Tammy of Cedar Hill; grandchildren Austin Thomas Brooks, Forrest Benjamin Brooks and Dominique Alvarado; sister Mary Harmon of Petal, Miss., sisters-in-law Elaverne Doggett and Golda Dixon; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at the First Baptist Church where Bud was a member of the V.I.P. Class. Interment was with full military honors at Dallas/Fort Worth National cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
A.L. “Coot” Murphey
A.L. “Coot” Murphey, 89, of Kemp died Aug. 7, 2003, in Kemp. He was born Allison LeRoy Murphey in Kaufman on June 9, 1914, to Jeff and Betty Tharp Murphey. He lived all his life in Kemp and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kemp.
Murphey retired from LTV as an aircraft engineer. He married
Ruby Z. Young on June 9, 1934, in Kaufman. She preceded him in death April 13, 1986.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law LeRoy and Sharon Murphey of Kaufman and Victor and Lucy Murphey of Kemp; daughters Wilma Whitehead, Wanda Patterson and Willa Ransdell, all of Kemp; grandchildren Donna Rawdon, Jeff Patterson, Sonia Rose, David Murphey, Steven Murphey and Harvey McDougald all of Kemp, Diann Walker, Cindy Stribling, Sherry Strempke, Christy Abanilla, LeRoy Murphey Jr. and James Scott Murphey all of Kaufman, and DeAnn Danielson of Mesquite; 15 great-grandchildren; sister Leona Haney of Mabank and numerous other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, with Rev. Dub Henry officiating. Interment followed in the Kemp cemetery.
Linda Ruth Spurlock
Linda Ruth Spurlock of Scurry passed away Feb. 16, 2003, in Brownwood, Texas. Linda was born in Dallas on Aug. 29, 1948, to Lonnie and Alma Deshazo Erwin. She was raised in Grays Prairie and was a member of the Styx Church of Christ.
Linda worked for Farmers Insurance for 14 years. She married
Jimmy Spurlock Sr. in Grays Prairie on Aug. 4, 1967.
Linda is survived by her husband, Jimmy; son Jimmy Spurlock Jr. of Scurry; daughter Sandy Mathis of Scurry; brothers Lonnie Erwin, Michael Erwin and Ricky Erwin; sisters Kay Lawrence, Patricia Tatum and Linda Gayle Erwin; grandchildren Ashley Spurlock, Bailey Spurlock and Lukas Spurlock.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at 10 a. m. at Styx Church of Christ with John Gragoski officiating. Graveside services were held at Mt. Olive cemetery in Goldthwaite, Texas, at 4 p. m. Wednesday. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
Betty Jo Tuttle
Funeral services for Betty Jo Tuttle, age 74 of Kaufman, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp with Rev. Denny Gorena officiating. Interment followed in the Morrow Chapel cemetery near Kaufman under the direction of Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home of Kaufman.
Betty Tuttle was born on Nov. 22, 1928, in Minco, Okla., a daughter of the late Henry and Jessie Cookston Gabehart, and passed away on Feb. 9, 2003, in Marble Falls, Texas. She had lived in Kaufman most of her life and was married
to Guy Tuttle on May 27, 1947, in Kaufman. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1992. Also, she is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Taunya Tuttle, a brother, Carl Gabehart, and her parents.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Tuttle of Round Rock; son Wayne Tuttle of Marble Falls; daughter Delma Harris of Texas City; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren; sisters Frances Stone of Seven Points and Wanda Kollhoff of Myrtle Springs; brother Roy Gabehart of Grove, Okla.; half brother Earl Smith of Jefferson, Texas; and half sister Ernestine Hurley of Dallas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives.
Hollis Ray Young
Hollis Ray Young was born in Wise County on July 28, 1928, to Grady and Mary McKinney Young. Ray passed away in Kaufman County on June 26, 2003.
He was raised in Rhome and Paradise, Texas, and entered the U.S. Army during World War II. After the service Ray moved to Arlington and then to Canton in 1968.
He married
Melba Pyron in Weatherford on June 20, 1952. In 1977 Ray and Melba moved to Kaufman where Ray was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.
Ray was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Ray Young, and is survived by his wife, Melba Young, of Kaufman; son Michael Young of Kaufman; daughters Sharon Jennings of Midlothian and Pat Brown of Kaufman; brother Wayne Young of Fort Worth; sister Jo Ann Henson of Benbrook; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Sunday, June 29, 2003, at the First Assembly of God Church of Kaufman with Rev. D.G. Council officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
Michael Glenn Gayler
Michael Glenn Gayler, was born Feb. 17, 1957 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He passed away June 14, 2002. He was a resident of Kaufman.
Mr. Gayler had many interests and was known as Red Gayler in the Kickboxing circuit. He was a 4th dan Black Belt in Karate and taught at his own Karate school. He loved to sing in his church and to write music and poetry. He wrote many songs and was the lead singer in his own band. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved motorcycles and bull riding.
He dearly loved his grandsons and affectionately called them Papa Dylan and Michael Wayne.
Mr. Gayler is survived by his loving wife Cindy Gayler; children, David and wife Season Gayler, and Doyle Gayler; grandsons, Dylan Gayler and Michael Wayne Gayler; and parents Glenn and Jean Gayler.
Other survivors include three sisters, Arliss Cunningham, Carliss Stewart and Sharron Menary. Numerous other family embers and friends are left behind to cherish his memory.
Services will be held Thursday, June 20, at 11 a.m. at Cottage Heights Baptist Church in Kaufman. Family and friends paid their respects to the family on Monday, June 17, at the Roselawn Funeral Home in Seagoville.
Ida Carolyn Reed
Ida Carolyn Reed was born Sept. 26, 1946, in Caddo, Okla., to Carrell and Sadie Love Braudrick. She passed away on June 11, 2002, in Kaufman.
Ida was raised in Irving and lived her life there until she moved to Kaufman in 1999. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Kaufman. On June 10, 1961, Ida married
Harold Reed in Grapevine.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Reed of Kaufman; sons, Ricky Reed of Seagoville and Randy Reed of Kaufman; daughter, Rindi Trainer of North Richland Hills; brothers, Carril Braudrick, John Braudrick, Wendell Buckmaster, Jerry Braudrick and Troy Buckmaster; sister:, Charolette Keller; nine grandchildren and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15, 2002, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Kaufman with Rev. Brent Gentzel officiating.
Interment followed in Wilson Chapel cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman. .
A.C. Harris
A.C. Harris was born June 24, 1923, in Carlisle, Ind., and passed away June 14, 2002, in Kaufman.
Mr. Harris was retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was also retired hom the US Army Reserves and a member of the American Legion of Kaufman.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay Harris, and one daughter, Patricia L. Harris.
Also surviving Harris are his brothers and sisters, Charles “Andy” and wife Helen Harris of College Station, Orville and Cassie Harris of Newcastle, Ind.; nieces and nephews, Bruce and Claudia Harris of Augusta, Ga., Nan and Chet Bussert of Indianapolis, Ind., Jill and Mike Morris of Newcastle, Ind., Brenda Haisley of Newcastle, Ind., and Chuck and Donna Harris of Bryan Texas.
Services were Monday at 10 a.m. in Roselawn Chapel. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Park.
Jonathan Paul Houk
Jonathan Paul Houk was born in Mobile, Ala., on Aug. 12, 1976, to Floyd and Brenda Adams Houk. He passed away in Kaufman on June 27, 2002. Jonathan was raised in Mobile, Ala., and lived a short time in Georgia. He moved to Kaufman in 1991. Jonathan loved reading, movies and horses. He was a member of the Luthern Church in Mobile, Ala.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother: Brenda Houk of Kaufman, parents: Nick and Naomi Bird of Brush Prairie, Wash., brothers: David Lee Houk Jr. of Kaufman and Seth Bird of Brush Prairie, Wash.
Memorials services will be held at a future day and time. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
