Jarry DeWayne Nix

Jarry DeWayne Nix was born in Athens, Texas, on Nov. 11, 1941, to Evert and Nadine Greenhall Nix. Jarry passed away at his home in Kaufman on July 23, 2003.

Jarry was raised in Eustace and lived in the Mabank area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict and worked for Tri-County Ford for 25 years. On Feb. 13, 1970, Jarry married Fannie Parsons.

He is survived by his wife, Fannie Nix, of Kaufman; sons Jesse Nix and William Nix, both of Kaufman; daughter LuAnn Morton of Kemp; numerous brothers and sisters; grandchildren Neeley Morton, Elizabeth Nix and Jesse Nix Jr.; other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held Friday, July 25, 2003, at Dallas/Fort Worth National cemetery in Dallas with Rev. Darren Harvey officiating.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

O. B. Gronewald

O. B. Gronewald was born on Dec. 6, 1910, in Kaufman to the late Fred F. and Georgia Irene McCormick Gronewald. He passed away July 25, 2003, in Kaufman.

O. B was married to Alta Mae Valentine on Jan. 8, 1933, in Kemp. She preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 2002, after 69 years of marriage.

O.B. lived his entire life in Kaufman and was a member of the Wilson Chapel Methodist Church. He was a farmer and cattleman for many years and also worked as manager of the Fair Store department store and K Wolens department store in Kaufman. After his retirement, O.B. enjoyed fishing, tending to his cows and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Billy Mack Gronewald, Maurice Gronewald and Fred Gronewald Jr. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and David Neal of Kaufman; son and daughter-in-law Edward and Joyce Gronewald of Lake Fork; grandchildren Mark Neal of Kaufman, Melanie Graves of Henderson, Nev., and Cyndi Garner and Melissa Knapp of Arlington; great grandchildren Scott and Sean Neal, Jessica and Jonathan Graves, Ashley and Garrett Garner and Jennifer Knapp; brother Robert Gronewald of Littlefield; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Brannon officiating. Interment followed in Wilson Chapel cemetery with nephews serving as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Allen Mangham

Funeral services for Allen Mangham, 91, of Kaufman were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at the Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Kaufman with Rev. Jerry Griffin officiating. Interment followed in the Kaufman cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Allen Aubrey Mangham was born on Aug. 1, 1911, in Kaufman. He was the son of the late J.N. and Lela Clayton Mangham and passed away on July 26, 2003, in Athens. Mr. Mangham lived in Kaufman all his life and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Kaufman.

He married Florence Patton on Dec. 29, 1936, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1988. He then married Jan Loftin on June 30, 1990. She preceded him in death on April 9, 2002.

Mr, Mangham is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends and relatives.

Robert A. Carter Jr.

Services for Robert A. Carter Jr., 82, of Kaufman were held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in Granite Falls, N.C. Local arrangements were under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kaufman.

Mr. Carter was born April 18, 1921, in Granite Falls, N.C., to the late Robert A. Carter Sr. and passed away Sept. 11, 2003, in Kaufman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Carter, and son Mike Whitener as well as his parents.

Survivors include his sons, Jeff Carter of Kaufman, Steve Whitener of San Antonio, and Danny Whitener of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Veta Kerr Trail

Veta Kerr Trail, 86, passed away Nov. 20, 2003, at the Summit at West Lake Hills in Austin, Texas, where she had been a resident for the past two-and-a-half years.

Veta was born on May 4, 1917, in Trent, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Andrew Kerr and Alice Polk Cotton Kerr, four sisters, Estelle, Pearl, Nannie Belle and Mary Kate; and one brother, Robert.

Her family was important to her, and it always saddened Veta that her own mother did not live longer.

Veta spent her early years in Kaufman, Texas. After she married , she lived in numerous locations, finally settling down in Dallas in 1953. She was always proud to call Dallas her home.

In Dallas she began her long, successful career with the National Board of YMCA where she spent 29 years working with outstanding professionals and making lifelong friends for whom she had the utmost respect. Throughout the years she loved to reminisce about those days, the job and the people.

After retiring from the National Board of YMCA, Veta continued to live in Dallas where she enjoyed weekly bridge games at Highland Park Presbyterian Church and Highland Park Methodist Church. Nothing pleased her more than bidding and making a slam!

Veta was also one of the original Dallas Cowboy fans. Through good and bad seasons, she attended the early Cowboy games at the Cotton Bowl, and later she never missed the broadcast of a game from Texas Stadium or wherever the Cowboys were playing. Veta moved to Austin in 1999 to be near her family, but she always longed for her home in Dallas.

Veta is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Larry Buller; her four grandchildren, Greg Walling of Austin, Allison Walling of New York City, Jamie Buller of San Francisco and Brett Buller of Austin; one sister-in-law, two nieces, one nephew, and their families, and Bill and Chrissie Walling.

The family wishes to extend their special thanks and gratitude for the kindness and support of the staff at the Summit at Westlake Hills, Dr. Matthew Masters, Laura Eisenberg, and Lone Star Hospice. Having conquered a number of serious illnesses during her life, Veta requested that her body be donated to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas so that future research might benefit others. The family has honored her request.

Billy Ray Shaw Sr.

Billy Ray Shaw Sr., the son of the late Jack and Lawrencie Brown Shaw, was born in Van Zandt County, Texas, on April 21, 1932, and passed away Nov. 22, 2003, in Terrell. He lived most of his life in Terrell where he worked in the trucking business for 50 years.

Billy was married to Margie Johnson on Sept. 23, 1953, and is survived by his wife of 50 years; three sons, Eddie Ray Shaw and Billy Shaw Jr., both of Terrell, and Tony Shaw of Dallas; two daughters, Debi Shaw Smith of Dallas and Monica Shaw Brock-way of Kaufman; one brother, Malcomb Shaw of Terrell; two sisters, Mary Dodson of Terrell and Janice Wood of Ferris; grandchildren Don Smith, Ryan Smith, Casey Brockway, Cyle Brockway, Catey Brockway, Krysta Shaw, Kyler Shaw; great-grandchildren Cole Smith, Chase Smith, Jett Smith; and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Pat Shaw.

Under the direction of Goggans Funeral Home of Terrell, funeral services were held at the graveside at Elmo cemetery on Nov. 25, 2003, with Rev. Larry Burden officiating.

Theodore R. Goolsby

Theodore R. Goolsby was born July 20, 1908 and passed away Nov. 17, 2003. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at the Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel.

Edna Tidwell Callaway

Funeral services were held for Edna Tidwell Callaway on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at First United Methodist Church in Haskell, Texas, with Rev. John Gondol and Rev. Greg Richards officiating. Burial was in Willow cemetery under the direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Our beloved Mother, Nana, Sister, Aunt and Precious Friend to many went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003. She was born Jan. 17, 1918, in Haskell, Texas, to the late Darling Gilbert and Carrie Bishop Tidwell. She married Garland Callaway Dec. 31, 1936, in Haskell, Texas. She has been a resident of Kaufman for 23 years. Edna was an active member at First United Methodist Church in Kaufman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland, daughter Judy and great-grandson Mark. She is survived by daughters Gayle and husband Lonnie Bounds and Selda and husband Jerry Loe, both of Kaufman; sister Mary and husband Arvil Jarman of Dallas; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Our dear Nana loved and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchidren. Her physical presence will be deeply missed, but as Christ reassures us in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” (NIV)

She was a true blessing to all her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in her name to the American Cancer Society or M.D. Anderson Hospital of Houston.

Pauline L. Reed

Pauline L. Reed was born in Forney, Texas, on June 29, 1913, to John and Juttie Howe Reed. Pauline passed away in Terrell on Feb. 21, 2003.

Pauline moved to the Becker Community and attended Kemp Schools. She moved to Kaufman her senior year of high school. She graduated from East Texas State University.

Pauline was a member of the Methodist Church all of her life and a member of First United Methodist Church of Kaufman for more than 60 years where she taught Sunday School, was church treasurer and leader of the Ruth and Martha group.

She was also a member of the Kaufman Hospitality House serving as secretary/treasurer and vice-president.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Gondol officiating. Interment followed in Kemp cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Lee and Thomas Reed, sister Jennie Bell Kiser and nephew Bobby Reed. She is survived by a niece, Ida Jo Reed of Garland, cousins and friends. Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church of Kaufman.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Rosemary Brumley

Rosemary Brumley of Scurry passed away at her home on May 25, 2003. She was born in Howard, Kan., on Sept. 23, 1936, to Ray and Irene Neeley Hauf.

Brumley was raised in Stillwater, Okla., and moved to Dallas in 1957. On Oct. 28, 1956, she married Bill Brumley in Gainsville, Texas. She moved to her home in Scurry in 1974.

Brumley was preceded in death by a sister and she is survived by her husband, Bill Brumley of Scurry; sons Mike Brumley of Scurry and Steve Brumley of Scurry; brother Gene Hauf of Stillwater, Okla.; and grandchildren Jared, Sarah, Adam, Anna and Bill Brumley.

Memorial services will be Thursday, May 29, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. John Brooks officiating.

Memorial arrangements are under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

James Luther Steelman

James Luther Steelman of Kaufman passed away May 20, 2003, at his residence. He was born Dec. 24, 1938, in Sulphur Springs to Luther Bennett Steelman and Daisy Violet Hall Steelman. He was a retired mechanic for Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Steelman is survived by his wife, Mona Nell Morgan Steelman of Kaufman; son Matthew Steelman of Wills Point; daughters Delila Steelman Hickman of Quitman, Melissa Steelman of Wills Point; mother Daisy Violet Hall Steelman of Lavon; brothers Kenneth Steelman of Wylie, Leslie Daniel Steelman of Mesquite, Jerry Dan Steelman of Copeville, Archie Ben Steelman of Copeville; sisters Mamie Lois Watson of Dallas, Pauline Davis of Irving, Susie Simmons of Wylie; step-children Vic Eubanks of Kaufman, Monzetta Shoemaker of Kaufman, Alfred Aleman of Irving, Ace Aleman of Dallas; and nine grandchildren.

Steelman was preceded in death by his father, Luther Bennett Steelman, and sister Lou Ellen Steelman Dunan.

Services were May 23 at Allen Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Jenkins officiating. Interment at Wylie cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Allen Funeral Home.

Isaac Sipriano Sr.

Isaac Sipriano Sr., 84, passed away on May 24, 2003, in Dallas. He resided in Kemp and Kaufman for many years.

Sipriano was born June 3, 1918, in Santa Anna, Texas. He retired in 1983 from Gardner-Denver Industrial Machinery. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He had a special gift for never meeting a stranger and always offering a helping hand to those in need. He touched every person he met in a very special way.

He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, a very active member of the St. Pius X Catholic Men’s Club and a very active volunteer for 25 years in the Love for Kids Foundation of Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vicente and Teofila Sipriano; brothers John and Teofilo Sipriano; sisters Angelita Sanchez and Paula Sipriano.

Sipriano is survived by Lucille, his devoted wife of 59 years; daughter Mary Helen Sipriano of Dallas; son Isaac Jr. and wife Melba Sipriano of Biloxi, Miss.; grandson Isaac Sipriano III and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Austin and Elizabeth Sipriano of Dallas; grandson Vincent B. Sipriano of Gulfport, Miss.; brothers Sabino, Florentino, Bartolome, Martin and Antonio Sipriano; sister Isabel Sipriano; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited May 26, 2003, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass was celebrated May 27, 2003, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Dallas, Rev. Don Zeiler presiding. Interment at Calvary Hill cemetery in Dallas.

Helen Ruth Marusak

Helen Ruth Marusak of Kaufman passed away in a Dallas hospital on May 24, 2003. She was born in Kaufman on July 17, 1936, to John and Lillie Havlik Reznicek.

Marusak was raised in Kaufman and attended Kaufman Schools. She attended nursing school, was an LVN for Colonial Hospital in Terrell for many years and worked at several area nursing homes.

Marusak was a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church of Kaufman. On Aug. 4, 1956, she married Henry Marusak in Kaufman.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Marusak of Kaufman; son Michael Marusak of Kaufman; daughter Benita Stewart of Kaufman; grandchildren Lana Gent, Mike Marusak Jr. and Jeremy Stewart; and mother Lillie Reznicek of Terrell.

Rosary was recited May 26, 2003, at 7 p.m. at Parker -Ashworth Funeral Home and Mass of Christian Burial was held May 27, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Kaufman with interment in Kaufman cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Starr Clyda Gallegos

Starr Clyda Gallegos was born in Atoka, Okla., on Feb. 19, 1940, to Charlie and Dama Johnson Mansell. She passed away in a Dallas hospital on May 17, 2003.

Gallegos was raised in west Texas and moved to Kaufman in 1970. For many years she was self employed.

On Nov. 4, 1961, she married Alex Gallegos in Las Vegas, Nev. She is survived by her husband, Alex Gallegos, of Kaufman; daughter Liza Freeman of Garland; grandson Brandon Barnett of Garland; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. D. G. Council officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Clara Lee Narramore

Funeral services for Clara Lee Narramore were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the First Presbyterian Church of Kaufman with Rev. Bob Lam and Rev. D.G. Council officiating. Interment followed in the Wilson Chapel cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kaufman.

Mrs. Narramore was born Sept. 15, 1920, to Claude Carlisle and Josephine Garlitz Birdsong and passed away Aug. 30, 2003, in Richardson. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kaufman. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Olen Birdsong and Raymond Birdsong; son-in-law Jim Vaughan; and grandson-in-law Tim Jaggars.

Survivors include her daughters, Allene Vaughan of Richardson and Linda Hamilton of Carrollton; son Rick Narramore and wife Pam of Rowlett; grandchildren Leeann Schisler, Angela Frazier, Ryan Narramore and Blake Narramore; great-grandchildren Trey Frazier and Madison Jaggars; sister Mildred Bailey of Jiba; several other relatives and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were Les Bailey, Jimmy Toney, Jimmy Howard, Tim Taggart, George Hussong, Jeremy Kuipers, Randy Toney, and Mike Wilson.

Family visitation was held Monday Sept. 1, 2003, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
