Florence DuBose Boothe

Florence DuBose Boothe passed away Friday evening, May 30, 2003 at her home in Gonzales. Born in Uvalde, Texas January 10, 1905, she was the daughter of William Oscar and Carrie DuBose.

While attending The University of Texas, she served as president of Delta Zeta Sorority and was elected to represent them as a Blue Bonnet Belle. After graduating in 1927 with a degree in English, she taught algebra and later seventh grade English for 29 years.

She was married to Robert Ragsdale Boothe of Gonzales on June 30, 1932. He served as Gonzales County Clerk for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on September 24, 1969.

A member of First Baptist Church, Florence was also a member of various organizations including Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Huguenot Society and the Gonzales Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Robert Ragsdale Boothe Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama, and a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Joe Bradley Cox of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren, Robert Scott Boothe, Kimberly Boothe Collette and Michael Darrell Boothe, all of Huntsville, Alabama; Joe Bradley Cox, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia and Susan Marie Cox of Frisco, Colorado. Great-grandsons include Robert Scott Boothe Jr., Jordan Patrick Boothe, Austin Bradley Boothe, William Sharp Boothe, Parker Alexander Boothe and Carter Michael Boothe, all of Huntsville, Alabama. Also surviving her is a sister, Lennis Cleo Ervin of Gonzales.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 5, 2003 at Seydler-Hill Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. with burial in Gonzales Masonic cemetery. Dr. Bill Nichols and Mr. Bob Burchard officiating.

Pallbearers will include Scott Boothe, Michael Boothe, Brad Cox, Tommy Ervin, Barry Boothe and Billy Boothe.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gonzales or the Hospice of South Texas.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003.

Elvin Steemer

Elvin Steemer, 74. of Gonzales, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003. He was born January 30, 1929 in Dilworth to the late Jimmy and Beatrice Pullin Steemer, of Dilworth, respectively.

Survivors include one son, Michael English; one daughter, Pam Clack; three sisters, Vera Green, Elizabeth Moore and Jerelean Smith.

He was preceded in death by four sons, Elysh Steemer, John Henry Steemer, Ellis Steemer and Willie Steemer; two daughters, Jackie Steemer and Tamarashae Steemer and one sister, Mary Alice Williams.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 2, 2003 at Providence Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with Dr. Don Taylor officiating.

Harris Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.

Roger Schautteet

Roger Schautteet, 53, of Ozona, Texas, died Monday, July 7, 2003. He was born November 16, 1949 in Gonzales to the late Louis and Elsie Kocurek Schautteet.

Survivors include his brother, David Schautteet and wife Shirley of Gonzales; one niece and one nephew.

Graveside services were held Friday, July 11, 2003 at the Gonzales City cemetery at 10 a.m.

Buffington Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.

Lorine Johanna Voigt

Lorine Johanna Voigt, 79, of Gonzales, died Monday, August 18, 2003. She was born March 27, 1923 in the Dilworth Community to the late Gerhard and Matilda Honzel Hoyer, of Flatonia and Shiner, respectively. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. James Catholic Church. She married Melvin Oscar Voigt on May 7, 1949 in Gonzales and he preceded her in death on February 11, 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Vera Staggs of Gonzales and Doris Cuvelier and husband Emil of Seguin; one sister, Elaine Woytek of Hallettsville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

A funeral mass was held at St. James Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 2 p.m. Burial followed at the Hermann Sons cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. James Catholic Church.

Pallbearers were Donnie Staggs, Nathan Moczygemba, Jack Albrecht, Gary Woytek, Eric Cuvelier and Ashley Alsobrook.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Commie Hisey, staff of Sievers Medical Clinic and A. J. Staggs.

Seydler-Hill Funeral Home of Gonzales was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Roy Elizabeth Galo

Ruby Roy Elizabeth Galo, 85, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2003 in Laredo. Liz, as she was affectionately known was born in Gonzales.

She attended Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, where she was an R.O.T.C. sponsor. Following her graduation she attended Our Lady of the Lake College, also in San Antonio.

Mrs. Galo was a pupil and later became an instructor at Mrs. Frank Bonner's Dancing School in San Antonio. Before coming to Laredo to make her home she held dance classes in Alice and nearby towns.

She was the director of the Galo School of Dance and for years she presented her pupils not only at the annual recitals, but also in programs for charity and civic clubs. Liz was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher of dance, yet she always found time to help in many civic projects.

She was first vice president of the Rehabilitation Center, a member of the Society of Martha Washington where she worked on various committees and served as president in 1964, a member of the Women's City Club, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Altar Society of Blessed Sacrament Church and assisted in the Civic Music Association and Community Chess Drives.

In April of 2000 Liz was one of four recipients of the Texas A&M; International Terpichorean Award for her remarkable impact in the field of dance, and for her contribution as one of the pioneers of dance in Laredo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frederick Bressi Galo; her son, Frederick Bressi Galo Jr.; and her parents, Mary Edith Kleczka and Albert J. Sauer.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Michael and wife Patricia V. Galo, Bradford and wife Reenie Galo of San Antonio, Patricia Elizabeth Galo, John C. and wife Anna Galo; grandchildren, Katharine Kane Galo of Dallas, Kristen Galo Peters, Michael and wife Blanca V. Galo Jr., Lisa Marie and husband Jason Westmoreland, Bradford Galo, Jr., Ashton Galo, all of San Antonio; four great-grandchildren, Claudia Kane Peters, Frederick Macallen Peters, Michael V. Galo, III, and Kelsie Elizabeth Westmoreland, also of San Antonio.

Mrs. Galo is also survived by her sisters, Cleon Sauer and Jackie Vangunten of Floyd, Va.; nephews, James and wife Kitty Vangunten of Simsburg, Conn., Tom and wife Laura Vangunten and their sons, Henry and Bobby Floyd; also numerous friends.

A rosary was held Sunday, February 23. 2003 at 7 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel in Cortez.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 24, 2003 at 8:40 a.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a holy mass at 9 a.m.

Interment followed at the family plot in the Calvary Catholic cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel in Cortez.

Edward Frederick "Eddie" Scheske

Edward Frederick "Eddie" Scheske, a kind, sincere soul, departed this world Tuesday, August 12, 2003 after a brief illness. Born in Gonzales, Texas May 11, 1954 to Fred A. Scheske Jr. and Mary E. "Goose" Scheske. Eddie attended public schools in Gonzales, graduating from Gonzales High School in 1972. He attended Texas A&M; studying Electrical Engineering.

For some time Mr. Scheske worked in Houston and Austin. He returned to Gonzales and founded his commercial refrigeration business, Maintenance Masters, which he operated until his untimely death. He was a member of the Gonzales A&M; Club, The Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gonzales.

A dedicated public servant, Eddie served two and one half terms on the Gonzales City Council. He was a longtime member of the Gonzales Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Scheske is survived by a brother, Robert (Bob) Scheske of Gonzales; a sister and brother-in-law, Claudia and Ralph Parr of Houston; two nieces, Daisy and Mary Scheske of Gonzales; a nephew, Richard B. Parr of Houston; an aunt, Jean Garrison of Texarkana; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Goose Scheske.

A graveside service was held Friday, August 15, 2003 at the family plot in the Masonic cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Doug Forshagen Jr., Elgin Heinemeyer, Dale Carleton, Andy Rodriguez, David Shelton, Steve Garrison, Tommy Davis, Jody Scheske, Jack Thurmond, Richard Yates and Rob Hyman.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The family thanks Dr. Joseph McCracken and his staff for their kind attention and care.

Bill Edward Myers

Bill Edward Myers, 74, of Delhi, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003 in Luling. He was born in Willis, Texas on December 13, 1928 to the late Frank Thomas and Bonnie Belle Smith Myers, of Willis and Bryan, respectively. He was a Master Mason of Park Place Masonic Lodge #1172 AF & AM, York Rite & Scottish Rite, Park Place Eastern Star #731, and he owned and operated Myers Transportation from 1947 to 1977.

Survivors include his wife, Leda Belle Myers of Delhi; his sister, Bonnie Lou Myers of Pasadena.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Myers; two sisters, Mary Catherine Locke and Betty Jo Hinds.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Delhi Baptist Church in Delhi. Burial will follow at the Delhi cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Brzozowski, Joe McWhorter, Tommy Blackmon, Doug Young, Jerry Pantermuehl and Mark Hakemack.

Honorary pallbearers were Gary Myers, Jerry Locke, Larry Myers and Delbert Locke.

Memorials may be made to the Delhi Baptist Church.

Encarnacion (Chon) Nanez

Encarnacion (Chon) Nanez, 90, of Gonzales, died Monday, August 18, 2003. He was born January 8, 1913 in Ojuelos, Texas to the late Silverio and Eduardo Ruiz Yanez. He was a foreman and a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Nanez; three daughters, Belia Pusquia of San Antonio, Emma Garcia of Seguin and Oralia Eldridge of Gonzales; two sons, Reynaldo Lopez and Carney Zambrano, both of Gonzales; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services was held Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Martin Leopold officiating. Burial followed at the St. James cemetery.

Pallbearers were Nicolas Nanez, Gilbert Perusquia Jr., Vincent Garcia, Felix Gonzales, Sabas Lopez and Sam Melchor.

Honorary pallbearers were Sean Zambrano, J. C. Eldridge Jr., Javier Garcia, Robert Perusquia, J. R. Eldridge and Cindy Garcia.

Lacy Troy Fryer, Sr.

Lacy Troy Fryer, Sr., 60, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2003 in Houston due to injuries from a fatal car accident. He was born June 13, 1943 in Gonzales. He was one of eight children born to Bessie Hopkins Fryer and Brack Fryer, Sr. He was raised in the Lone Oak Community in Gonzales County.

Lacy was a graduate of Edwards High School in Gonzales. After high school he attended Prairie View A&M; University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture.

Lacy was one of the first two African-Americans to join the Texas National Guard and Army Reserves from 1966 to 1972, where he was in charge of the Fire Fighters Engineering Unit. Lacy was the Regional Director of the Texas Department of Agriculture, where he retired after 36 years. He was the first African-American to be employed by TDA. During his tenure, he received numerous accolades for his outstanding service to the State of Texas.

He was currently employed with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a Program Administrator of Agribusiness, Land and Minerals. He was also a member of Love United Methodist Church, where he held many offices, including Financial Chairperson.

He was also a member of The United Methodist Men, Men's Chorus, and was on the Board of Trustees.

Lacy loved the outdoors, especially deer hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling, other sports and working on the farm.

He was an inspiration to many. He was a devoted father, a loving brother and a friend to everyone. Being a man of great integrity, he touched many lives with his warm genuine affection for others.

He was predeceased by a loving wife, Carolyn Sue Lindsay Fryer; his parents, Bessie and Brack Fryer, Sr.; two brothers, Brack Jr., and James Elmo Fryer.

Survivors include one son, Lacy Troy Fryer, Jr. and wife Vickie of Katy; one daughter, Tracy Lynn Fryer of Houston; sisters, Joycesteen Ruffin of Fayettville, North Carolina, Cloteal Lott and husband Floyd of Runge and Bobbie Courett of Houston; brothers, Lawrence Fryer, Sr. and wife Clara and Frank Fryer Sr. and wife Florence, both of Gonzales; two grandchildren, Lacy Troy Fryer, III, and Kennedy Fryer; mother and father-in-law, Dorothy and Benjamin Lindsay, Jr. of Hallettsville; brother-in-law, Benjamin Lindsay III and wife Josie of Houston; God daughter, Kachelle Kelly; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church West Campus in Houston with Rev. Michael L. Bowie, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at the Brookside cemetery in Houston.

Brookside Funeral Home of Houston was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence "Larry" Trigo

Lawrence "Larry" Trigo, 48, of Nixon, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 in Luling. He was born September 27, 1954 to the late George S. and Manuela Cardona Trigo. He was a farm worker and a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Ann Ybarra of San Antonio and Mary Alice DeLeon of Nixon; 10 brothers, Ralph Trigo, Lusio Trigo, Armando Trigo, Jesse Trigo, Alex Trigo, Mark Trigo, Ernest Trigo and George Trigo, all of Nixon; Mario Trigo, of Seguin and Adolph Trigo of San Antonio.

Graveside services were held at the Latin American cemetery in Nixon on Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Father David Tarlizzo officiating.

Memorials can be made in the way of Mass Cards.

Carolyn Sue Lindsay Fryer

Carolyn Sue Lindsay Fryer, 59, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2003 in Houston, due to injuries she received from a fatal car accident. She was born August 3, 1944 in McAllen. She was the eldest of two children born to Dorothy Valentine Lindsay and Benjamin Lindsay, Jr.

She grew up in Hallettsville and graduated from Steven Mayo High School. After graduating from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. She served for 13 years as a government/history teacher and a physical education instructor at Forest Brook High School in the North Forest I.S.D.

She was also a government teacher with Humble High School in Humble I.S.D., where she retired after 12 years. She was actively involved with the Close-Up Foundation, where she took students to Washington DC. to visit legislators, and observe all facets of government.

Mrs. Fryer was a member of Love United Methodist Church, where she served on the Usher Board, United Methodist Women and Mass Choir. She enjoyed reading, movies, traveling, being called 'Nana' and hanging out with the grandkids. She was an inspiration to many. She was a devoted mother, a loving sister and a friend to everyone. She touched many lives with her smile and genuine affection for others.

She was preceded in death by a loving husband, Lacy Troy Fryer, Sr. Survivors include her parents, Dorothy and Benjamin Lindsay, Jr. of Hallettsville; one son, Lacy Troy Fryer, Jr and wife Vickie of Katy; one daughter, Tracy Lynn Fryer of Houston; brother, Benjamin Lindsay, III and wife Josie of Houston; two grandchildren, Lacy Troy Fryer, III and Kennedy Fryer.

Also left to cherish her memory is a nephew, Benjamin Lindsay, IV,; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; two aunts, Iris Steen Dukes of Inglewood, California and Margaret Sue Lindsay of Sugarland; her God daughter, Kachelle Kelly and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church West Campus in Houston with Rev. Michael L. Bowie, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at the Brookside cemetery in Houston.

Brookside Funeral Home of Houtston was in charge of arrangements.
