Ladell Bradshaw – August 23, 2011

Ladell Bradshaw, 84, of Amarillo died Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 27, 2011 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Scott Davey of Grace Calvary Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mrs. Bradshaw was born on November 18, 1926 in Naples, Texas to Clarence and Bonnie Brunett. She married James Bradshaw on September 30, 1944 in New Boston, Texas. Mrs. Bradshaw was a member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile and attended Grace Calvary Church.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Kay Warwick.

Survivors include her husband, James Bradshaw of Amarillo; daughter, Jimi Lanette Ricketts and husband David, and son, James M. Bradshaw, Jr. and wife Vicki, all of Amarillo; sisters, Geneva Hall of Texarkana, Arkansas and Patsy Albritton of Humble, Texas; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mother, we will miss you every day. Our love is forever, your loving family.

Michael Henry Williams – August 22, 2011

Michael Henry Williams, 54, formerly of Amarillo, died Monday, August 22, 2011 in Denver, CO.

Services will be held Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5005 I-40 West, in Amarillo with Rev. Brian Hesse officiating. A brief graveside ceremony will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Michael H. Williams was born June 13th, 1957, in Rantoul, Illinois. He has resided in Denver, Colorado since 1994. He grew up in Amarillo, TX, graduated from Tascosa High School in 1975, and served 5 years with the Amarillo Police Department. He went on to graduate with high honors from the University of Texas in Austin. He made a career with Farmer’s Insurance where he helped develop the company’s fraud investigation program. He loved fishing and hunting, music, and spending time in the mountains of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Kay Williams; and his brother, Steven R. Williams.

Michael is survived by his wife, Meg; his two sons, Jeremy and Jonathan; his brothers, Bill, Don, and Tim; his sister, Mary Berryman; and his niece and nephews, Katherine, Timothy, Aaron, Benjamin, Corey and Carley.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Denver Hospice, www.thedenverhospice.org, or the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.

Visitation will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Mary L. Howard – August 23, 2011

Mary L. Howard, 97, of Amarillo died on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with David Brown officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Howard was born on April 9, 1914 in Malta, Texas to William and Laura Elliott. She worked in alterations for Colbert’s Clothing Store.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Howard.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat Parker Jones of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Richard Frank, Pamela Ellis, James Parker and Michael Parker; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Garland Ward Rattan – August 22, 2011

Garland Ward Rattan, 78, of Amarillo, died Monday, August 22, 2011.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday August 25, 2011 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. Howard K. Batson of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at 6:00 p.m. in East Mound Cemetery in Matador, TX. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Rattan was born in Lamesa, TX on June 15, 1933 to Ward and Pearl Rattan and was raised in Matador where he graduated from high school. He played football for four years at West Texas State and earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s in education. He was a member of the T-Club and Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities.

He worked at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch from 1955 to 1992. At the age of 28 he was the youngest school superintendent in Texas and served the Ranch in that capacity for over 30 years.

Mr. Rattan was a member of Palo Duro Masonic Lodge in Amarillo and Khiva Shrine Center. He was a life member of Amarillo Chapter #787 and Dumas #653. In 1992 he served the Grand Chapter of Texas as Worthy Grand Patron, an honor he cherished because of the beloved members throughout the state.

He held memberships in numerous education societies, and at one time was an active Gideon.

He is survived by wife of 57 years, Shirley Rattan of Amarillo; sons, David Rattan and wife Lee Ann of North Richland Hills and Chris Rattan and wife Dena of Amarillo; grandchildren, Andy Rattan and wife Caitlyn, Courtney Rattan, Mackenzie Rattan and Zachary Rattan; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Bobbie Schmidt of Perryton; two brothers-in-law of Texarkana, Jack Porter and wife Cindy, and Jerome Porter; and beloved nieces and nephews.

The family suggest memorials be made to the Garland and Shirley Rattan scholarship fund to benefit Boys Ranch Alumni, in care of Bob Sarpalius, 133 Springhill, Hurst, TX 76053; or to the ESTARL scholarship fund to benefit students training for the ministry or church music in care of Mrs. Alma York, 7407 Dreyfuss Dr., Amarillo, TX 79129; or to the charity of your choice.

The family extends special thanks to Lorry Parker and the loving, caring staff at The Cottages in Amarillo.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Mauna Loa Calliham Cleek – August 22, 2011

Mauna Loa Calliham Cleek passed away on August 22, 2011, at the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veteran’s Home in Amarillo.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Panhandle on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. The family will have a private graveside service preceding the memorial service. Military Rites are by DAV Chapter 26. She will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Boxwell Brothers in Panhandle.

Born on March 24, 1922 to James Paul and Marion Proctor Calliham at their home near Conway, TX, Mauna Loa became a part of one of the Panhandle’s pioneer farming and ranching families. Her early school years were spent at the Conway school and in 1938, at barely 16 years old she graduated from Panhandle High School. She attended Texas Tech for two years before transferring to her beloved University of Texas in Austin. After graduating in 1942 she taught high school English in Phillips, TX. In 1944, feeling the call of duty, she enlisted in the WAVES of the United States Navy. After basic training in New York, she was stationed in San Diego. She was very proud of her years of service during WWII and took delight in participating in many 4th of July parades in Panhandle.

At the end of the war she returned to Panhandle and was a secretary for the Federal Land Bank office. She soon met Louie Cleek who had returned to his hometown after serving in the Army Air Corps during the war. They were married on November 17, 1946, and spent the next forty-eight years in the farming and ranching business. She taught English for many years in the Panhandle secondary schools.

Mauna Loa was a faithful member and choir member at First United Methodist Church in Panhandle. She was a past member of Atheneum Club, Panhandle Country Club, and 55 Plus club. Bridge and crossword puzzles were her passions with the daily crossword puzzle being the first section of the paper she was interested in followed by the sports section. She spent many hours playing games with family members.

Mauna Loa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Lola Sue Peck and Mary Nell Franklin Cox.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Connor and husband Bill of Georgetown, TX; her son, Les Cleek and wife Jan of Panhandle; one sister, Paula Vance and husband Don of Panhandle; grandchildren, Paul Connor and wife Cristi and Cynthia Elden and husband Neal, all of Houston; Clay Cleek of Santa Fe, NM; Shea Shiel and husband Byron of Ft. Lauderdale , FL; Cole Martin of Tahlequah, OK and Lindsay Martin of San Antonio; great-grandchildren, Ainsley and Will Connor and Danica Elden of Houston; seven nieces and nephews; numerous grand-nieces and nephews and extended family.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Meredith House of Pampa and Ussery-Roan Texas State Veteran’s Home of Amarillo for the care they have given to Mauna Loa these last few years.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Panhandle, 600 Main, Panhandle, TX 79068; or to Alzheimer’s Association, 415 S.W. 8th Ave #300, Amarillo, TX 79101; or to a favorite charity.

Lewis Kenneth Copeland – September 18, 2011

Lewis Kenneth Copeland, 86, of Ehrhardt, South Carolina, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 in Amarillo. Services will be held at a later date at the Herndon, Brice & Sons Funeral Home in Ehrhardt, South Carolina. Burial will be at the Mount Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery. Local arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Lewis was born on October 22, 1924 in Ehrhardt, South Carolina to Lewis and Mary Copeland. He had worked in security as a police officer at the Dupont Savannah River Plant for over 35 years. He loved to raise pigs and farm.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Castleberry Copeland on December 10, 2010; and a brother, T.W. Copeland.

He is survived by a son, Fred Hammond Copeland and wife Annette of Henry, TN.; two daughters, Mary Copeland Gray of Ehrhardt, South Carolina and Kathy Wheeler and husband Scott of Amarillo; a sister, Miriam Barrineau of Andrews, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, Adam Chaimowitz, Eric Wheeler, Nikki Toulouse, Heather Wheeler, Katie Leach, Rebecca Wheeler, and Sarah Wheeler; and a great grandson, Kayden Wheeler.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, 1173 Mt Pleasant Rd, Ehrhardt, SC 29081-9285.

Jack L. Erikson – September 17, 2011

Jack L. Erikson, 81, of Amarillo, died September 17, 2011 at Ussery Roan State Veterans Home, Amarillo, Tx.

No services will be held. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Jack was born on June 4, 1930 in Fowler, Kansas. He was number nine of ten children born to George and Ethel Stewart Erikson. He was a member of the Air Force for 3 years and served in the Korean War. Jack worked for the Texas Department of Agriculture until his retirement.

Jack is survived by his younger brother Arlen (Joe) of Sedona, Arizona, many nieces and nephews and special friends Max and Elaine Jordan.

Roberta Cox Cooper – September 15, 2011

Roberta Cox Cooper, 65, of Amarillo, died Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 19, 2011 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Dr. G.A. Roach officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Roberta was born July 24, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to J. Bob and Edna Cox. In 1949 they moved to Dumas, TX to open Cox’s Jewelry Store. She attended Dumas schools. After attending Howard Payne College and Texas Tech University, she took nurses training at Dumas Memorial Hospital. Upon graduating, she was employed by Meredith and Wright Clinic. After a few years, she moved to Amarillo where she made her home. She was employed at Amarillo Urology Clinic and retired from there in 2000. She married Corky Cooper in May 1993.

Survivors include her husband, Corky Cooper of Amarillo; mother, Edna Cox of Amarillo; a son, Barton of Lubbock; and a brother, Doug Cox of Longview, TX.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Lubbock State School Chaplain’s Fund, Box 5396, Lubbock, TX; or to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.

Vannie Beauchamp – September 14, 2011

Vannie Beauchamp, 78, a life-long resident of Dumas, TX, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011, in Dumas with family by her side.

Rosary will be said at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 10th and Maddox, Dumas, TX on Friday, September 16, 2011 evening at 7:00 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., also at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church followed by burial at Dumas Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 500 N. Maddox, Dumas, TX.

Vannie was born on September 19, 1932, in Dumas, the sixth child to J. A., Sr. and Sallie McMurry. Her six siblings include Gladys “Short” Baer, Aline Morrison, J. A. McMurry, R. O. McMurry, Sue Lewis and Doris “Dink” Neie. She graduated from Dumas High School and attended McMurry College in Abilene, TX. She married Lloyd Beauchamp, July 24, 1952, in Taos, New Mexico, and together they established their home west of Dumas. Vannie was a homemaker and a partner with Lloyd in his farming and ranching operations and continued to farm after his death.

Vannie was active in many church and community events. She enjoyed working outside in her yard; she enjoyed all sporting events, and painted in her spare time. Her coffee pot was always on and her door was always open to family, friends, and visitors.

Vannie was a wonderful Christian, her life exemplified her faith, and at her death was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Her immediate family includes her children, Joe and Penny Beauchamp of Dumas, Janet and John Drake of Oklahoma City, and Kathy and Dan McDowell of Sunray, her five grandchildren, Susan and Chris Jones, Cody and Ezzy McDowell, Jay and Hilleary Drake, Casey McDowell, and Josh and Amanda Drake, and her great grandchildren, Emily and Ty McDowell, Maggie and Colt McDowell, and Jolee and Rylee Jones. She is also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Sue and Gordon Lewis, and Doris and Durwood Neie and many other family members and friends.

The family suggest memorials be to Memorial Hospice, 224 E. 2nd St., Dumas, TX, Texas Oncology, 1000 S. Coulter, Suite 100, Amarillo, TX, or to your favorite charity.

Ruby “Juanita” McClure Sutton – September 11, 2011

Ruby “Juanita” McClure Sutton passed away on September 11th in Amarillo, Texas. She was 87 years old. Born on July 23, 1924 in Butlerville, Arkansas to Lyle and Elora McClure, she grew up in Ulm, Arkansas and moved to Little Rock and Jacksonville, Arkansas and later to Detroit, Michigan to work in munitions plants during World War II. She moved with her family to Amarillo, Texas where she worked as a hairdresser at The Carousel Beauty Salon until finally retiring in 2001. She was a hard working and fiercely independent woman who was respected and admired by everyone who knew her.

Juanita was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who was cherished by her family. She loved Jesus, her family, her country, the Arkansas Razorbacks, the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Cowboys, and her dog, Maggie – although not always necessarily in that order. She clipped the television sports schedule from the newspaper every morning so she did not miss any opportunities to cheer for her favorite players and teams. One of her favorite memories was winning the Arkansas State Girl’s Basketball championship during high school with her father as her coach. She was devoted to her daughters, granddaughters, brothers, sister and extended family.

Juanita is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Susan Clawitter Hixson and Jay Hixson of Paris, Arkansas, and Deborah Clawitter Hansen and Randy Hansen of Amarillo, Texas; three granddaughters, Leslie Hixson Herrington and her husband, Austin, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Marcie Hansen Bunch and her husband, Trey, of Dallas, Texas, and Lindsey Hixson of Hot Springs, Arkansas; a sister, Pate Stanphill, of Denison, Texas; two brothers, Denver McClure of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Frank McClure and his wife, Una, of Searcy, Arkansas; a sister-in-law, Betty McClure of Cedarville, Texas; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. She was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Alton McClure. Memorial Services will be held at a later date at Lone Tree Cemetery in Suttgart, Arkansas, officiated by Juanita’s great-nephew, Russell Stanphill of Humboldt, Tennessee. Arrangements are being handled by Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

Phyllis A. Askew – September 14, 2011

Phyllis Althea Askew was a remarkable woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who passed away just a week before her 94th birthday. She will long be remembered for her loving and adventurous spirit. She possessed an engaging persona and a positive, strong attitude which touched many lives.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Barry Loving officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Phyllis was born in Peoria, Illinois to Willis and Nellie Johnson. In 1945 she came to Amarillo with her husband, William Burke Cline who passed away unexpectedly. In 1950 she married Middleton L. Askew with whom she shared many wonderful years raising her daughters and enjoying their friends and relatives. Together, they delighted in numerous activities, including taking friends water skiing, traveling in their camper trailer to many marvelous places, meeting other Good Sam Travel Club members, and enjoying Rotary International events.

As a young woman she attended the Chicago Institute of Art as an interior design student yet found herself taking every drawing and painting class offered. She followed this passion her whole life. She was instrumental in bringing Tole painting to Amarillo. Finding her real talent and passion as an artist, she created exceptional oil paintings depicting Hill Country bluebonnets, New Mexico landscapes and adobes, floral still life arrangements and other works of art.

As a home maker, Phyllis became an expert seamstress, picking up one of the talents she learned while working in one the Chicago’s early department stores. She loved supporting her daughters’ activities by becoming a Girl Scout leader, poster maker, costume maker and all-round supporter of many school and church activities. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had many opportunities to experience Phyllis.

Phyllis was a life-long member of the First Christian Church, joining when she first arrived in Amarillo. She was a member of the Rachael Group.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzy Zimmerman of Amarillo and Linda Askew and husband Scott Mathis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; granddaughter, Stacey Zimmerman and husband Sean Pittman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandson, Mark Askew Zimmerman of Katy, Texas; and great-grandchildren Colton Farley, Cade Zimmerman and Caitlin Zimmerman.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to a favorite charity.
