Marvin States

Marvin States, 88, of Amarillo died Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Gruver Cemetery in Gruver with the Rev. Danny Logan, pastor of Bell Avenue Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. States was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Marshall, Okla., to Arthur and Attalena Kaiser States. He married Vyneta Haynes in Gruver on Aug. 15, 1970.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to his private nurse, Teresa Hayes, and to all his caregivers from Home Care Connections, BSA Hospital and BSA Hospice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Attalena States; a son, Leroy States; and a brother, Troy States.

Survivors include his wife, Vyneta States; three daughters, Anita States Cowan and husband Dewayne of Balko, Okla., Rose Hopkins of Midlothian and Kay Chisholm and husband Bob of Greenville; two sons, Larry Haynes and wife Ruby of Vernon and Dale Haynes and wife Betsy of Greenville; many nieces, nephews and grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Idolina Garcia

GRUVER - Idolina Garcia, 84, died Sunday, March 30, 2008.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008 in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Gumfory and Isabel Martinez officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Garcia was born April 1, 1923, in Chihuahua, Mexico. She married Ramon Garcia in 1959. She was a homemaker and a member of the Primera Iglesia Bautista Church of Spearman

Survivors include six daughters, Eustolia Simental of Juarez, Mexico, Ramona Sota of El Paso, Josefa Granados of Gruver, Soledad Favela of Sunland Par, NM, Herminia Aguilar of Gruver, and Sandy Franco of El Paso; a son, Ramon Garcia Jr. of Gruver; a brother, Lalo Ochoa of Chihuahua; a sister, Socorro Morales of Juarez; 26 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

Orville Hill

Guymon, OK - Orville Carmen Hill, 79, lifelong area resident, passed away Wednesday, March 19th, 2008.

The son of Jennie (Jensen) and Lars Hill, he was born December 4, 1928 in Hansford County, Texas. Orville was confirmed and baptized in the Oslo Lutheran Church and graduated from Gruver High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War with honorable discharge in 1953. He was united in marriage to Mary Smith on April 3, 1965. Orville had been a farmer and had previously worked for Adam's Hardfacing, Guymon Sheet Metal and McCullogh Tool Company.

Survivors include his sons, Larry Abla of Harvest, Alabama; and Chris Hill of Guymon; two sisters, Emma Gebhard of Guymon; and Ruth and husband, Marvin Pierce of Bartlesville, OK; two brothers, Clifford Hill and wife, Ruby; and Richard Hill and wife, Linda, all of Guymon; and a grandson, Justin Abla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Hill, who passed away in 1980; and two brothers, Arthur Hill and Leonard Hill.

Funeral services will be Monday afternoon, March 24th at 2:00 PM at the Henson-Novak Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mark Wescoatt, of Trinity Lutheran Church, Guymon, officiating. Interment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.

Memorials may be given to a charity of choice, c/o Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.

Louis "Louie" Cluck Bretz

AMARILLO - Louis "Louie" Cluck Bretz, 52, of Amarillo died Tuesday, March 18, 2008.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Gruver Cemetery in Gruver with Jim York, minister of Church of Christ in Stinnett, officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Bretz was born Aug. 15, 1955, in Perryton to Louis and Mae Bretz. He graduated from Gruver High School and attended Wentworth Military Academy in Missouri. He had worked as a chemical sprayer for Terminix.

He will be missed by his family and his "Poker Buddies."

Survivors include two sons, Casey Bretz and Jesse Bretz, both of Amarillo; a daughter, Amy Bretz of Amarillo; a sister, Fern Bretz of Brevard, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Top of Texas AA, 1301 S. Taylor St., Amarillo, TX 79101.

Joe Hataway

DUMAS - Sheriff D. 'Joe' Hataway 65 passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 in Dumas, Texas.

Services were be held at 2:00 p.m., March 19, 2008 at the Sunray Church of Christ with Joe Mitchell of Green Bay, Wisconsin officiating, assisted by Johnathan Zerby, minister of the church. Burial was in Lane Memorial Cemetery with flag detail by the Lubbock County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors.

D. Joe Hataway was born March 26, 1942 in Sunray, Texas to Homer Jay and Edith Marie Hataway. He was the middle child of seven children but was his mother's favorite. He graduated from Sunray High School with the class of 1960. In 1961 he joined the National Guard. On November 22, 1963 he married Yvonne Farris in Dumas. He was actively involved helping with Cal Farley's Boys Ranch for many years.

He joined the Amarillo Police Department and worked in Amarillo for five years. Joe graduated from the Department of Public Safety Academy in 1967 and was the Driver's License Trooper in Borger for a year and then transferred to Knox City, Texas. He stayed in Knox City for two years and then transferred to Perryton. He remained a DPS Trooper in Perryton from 1971 to 1980. On August 1, 1980 Joe was elected to his first term as sheriff of Ochiltree County. He remained in office until his retirement on March 31, 2007.

Survivors include; his wife Yvonne of Sunray; sons, Joe Vaughn Hataway and wife, Tammie of Trinidad CO. and Jayson Lee Hataway and wife, Jennifer of Borger; daughters, Joy Dawn Blundell and husband Jim of Iowa Park, TX and Jana Marie Newman and husband Wilson of Graford, TX; brothers, Harold Hataway and wife, Annis and Jim Hataway and wife, Barbara all of Sunray, Donnie Hataway of Joplin, MO, sisters, Darlene Keeton and husband Buster of Enid, OK, Collene Seright of Albuquerque, NM, Marlene Irwin and husband Al of Midwest City, OK; ten grandchildren, many nephews and nieces.

Pallbearers will be Sheriff James Robertson of Lipscomb County, Sheriff Bo DeArmond of Moore County, Sheriff Gary Evans of Hansford County, Sheriff Don Copeland of Gray County, Sheriff Jack Haile of Sherman County, Sheriff David Medlin of Oldham County, Sheriff Gary Henderson of Hemphill County and Sheriff Joel Richardson of Randall County. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Sheriff and Deputies of the Ochiltree County Sheriff's Department.

Marie E. Jones

TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Marie E. Jones, 88, died Sunday, March 2, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008 in First Baptist Church with the Rev. David England, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery by Dunn Funeral Home.

Marie Jones was born Sept. 11, 1919, in Logan, N.M., and was a longtime Tucumcari resident. She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Stewart of Gray, Ky., and Clara Russell of DeLeon, Texas; six sons, Walter "Sonny" Jones of Morse, Texas, Bobby Jones of Fort Worth, Texas, Bennie Jones of London, Ky., Jessie "Butch" Jones of Tucumcari, Billy Jones of DeLeon and Tommy Jones of Tucumcari; 32 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Dwight Delbert Thomas

WHEELER - Dwight Delbert Thomas, 37, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Lubbock.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008 in Country Chapel Church with the Rev. Randy Stalls, pastor of McLean Cowboy Church in McLean and the Rev. Alan Morgan, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.

Dwight Delbert Thomas was born Oct. 3, 1970, to Delbert and Jane Helm Thomas in Memphis. He graduated from Wheeler High School in 1989. He attended one year at Clarendon Junior College, attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University and graduated from Frank Phillips Junior College in Borger with an associate degree. Mr. Thomas was self-employed, working in the oil field business. He received the gift of life May 20, 2000, with a kidney transplant.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Dude Helm of Memphis; and his grandmother, Ann Thomas of Pampa.

Survivors include his parents, Delbert and Jane Thomas of Guymon, Okla.; a daughter, Kylie Thomas of Gruver; a brother, Drew Thomas of Wheeler; his paternal grandfather, Jerrold Thomas of Pampa; and his maternal grandmother, Honeria Helm of Memphis.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Kylie Thomas Scholarship Fund, City National Bank, P.O. Box 1228, Guymon, OK 73942.

The family will be greeting people from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruth Jeoffroy Roper

Ruth Jeoffroy Roper (86) was born April 29, 1921 in Drummond, OK and passed away in her home in Flower Mound, TX on Feb 25, 2008.

Ruth was born in Drummond, OK to Roy and Grace (Lindley) Jeoffroy. Ruth moved to Perryton, TX with her parents and brothers, Ray and Archie. Ruth attended First through 12th Grade at Perryton. College followed, attending Texas State Women's University in Denton, Tx (2 yrs) and West Texas State University in Canyon Texas (1 Yr).

Ruth and Roy Roper of Darrouzett, TX married July 23, 1941. During the years of service in the Air Force, Roy and Ruth were stationed in La Junta, CO and Riverside, CA. Roy served during World War II in the Pacific.

Roy and Ruth lived in Amarillo, where their four children were born. The family moved to a farm near Gruver, TX in 1956. In 1971 Roy and Ruth moved to Guadalajara, Mexico. In 1974 they moved to Arlington, TX, followed by a move to Dallas in 1975. In 1992 they moved to Flower Mound, TX. Roy and Ruth attended Valley Creek Church in Flower Mound.

Ruth served as Beta Sigma Phi Council President in Amarillo. She was responsible for organizing other Beta Sigma Phi chapters in the Texas Panhandle. Ruth served as 4-H leader and Boy Scout leader for many years in Hansford County.

Ruth was an expert seamstress, making many of her own clothes in high school, and later sewing for her children and grandchildren. Ruth had a sewing and alteration business while living in Dallas.

Ruth had the gift of hospitality. She was always sharing her exceptional dishes with others. She also enjoyed landscaping and growing flowers.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Roy Roper of Flower Mound, 4 children, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren and many wonderful neighbors and friends. Her children include Jeff Roper of Carrollton, TX.; Jan and husband, Lynn Stedje, of Gruver; Rick and wife, Judy of Granbury, TX; and Ronda Roper of Dallas. Grandchildren are Krista and husband Steven Davis, of Gruver; Jill and husband Sam Watson of Gruver; Lee Stedje and wife Becky of Gruver; Angela Roper of Granbury; Natalie Roper and Austin Roper of Dayton, TX, and step-grandchildren Andy and Randy Elliott of Granbury. Great grandchildren include Lori Watson and Michaela, Blaise Luke and Jobi Davis and Peyton Pinson.

Graveside services will be held Friday, February 29, at 10:30 am at DFW National Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Odyssey Healthcare Foundation (Hospice) of Dallas.

Dixie C. Tracy

SPEARMAN - Dixie C. Tracy, 87, died on Monday, February 25, 2008.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Hansford Cemetery with Rev. Jim Medley and Jay Tracy officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Tracy was born July 25, 1920 in Liberal, MO. She had lived in the area since 1957. She married Everett Tracy on December 28, 1941 in Lamar, MD.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Twentieth Century Club, the Gladiola Flower Club and a former board member of the Hansford County Historical Society. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spearman.

Survivors include her husband, Everett, of the home; a son, Richard Tracy of Waco; a granddaughter and her husband, Amy Kathryn and Aaron Abel of The colony, TX; and a grandson and his wife, Jay Franklin and Jennifer Tracy of Waco.

The family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 399, Spearman TX 79081; Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland, Spearman TX 79081; or one's favorite charity.

Jean Byrd

Jean Byrd, 76, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2008.

Graveside services will be held at Hansford Cemetery on February 23, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bob Elder officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman

Jean was born on December 28, 1931 in Caddo County, OK to William and Laura Ballard. She moved to Spearman in 1958.

She married Red Byrd in New Castle, TX on December 25, 1948. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Laura Ballard.

She is survived by her husband, Red Byrd of the home; a daughter, Tuwana Trout of Elkhart, KS; two sons, Dean Byrd of Amarillo, and Gene Byrd of Arpelar, OK; a sister, Billye MAckey of Bessemer, AL; a brother, Doug Ballard of Van Alstyne, TX; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials to Hansford Manor, 707 S. Roland, Spearman TX 79081.

Bobby Lee Hicks

GRUVER - Bobby Lee Hicks, 71, died Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Spearman.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2008 in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Price officiating. Burial was in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mr. Hicks was born Oct. 28, 1936, in rural Grayson County. Bobby graduated from Hale Center High School. He participated in the Hale Center Summer Baseball League and was an active member. He married Carolyn Ballard on Sept. 5, 1954, in Hale Center. In 1963, Bobby and Carolyn and children moved to a farm near Plainview. He was a member of the Evening Lions Club.

In 1967, the family moved to Gruver, where Bobby enjoyed playing on the men's volleyball team. He also participated in the American agriculture farm strike. He was an avid fan of his children's school activities. Bobby's favorite pastime in later years was going to the domino parlor and the Dairy Queen with the coffee bunch. He was a member of Gruver United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two infant sons.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry Hicks and wife Rhonda of Gruver and Bobby Dale Hicks of Amarillo; a daughter, Susan Lancaster of Amarillo; a sister, Linda Mahagan of Hale Center; three granddaughters, Brandea Allen and husband Mark of Spearman, Chelsea Hicks of Perryton and Amanda Lancaster of Lubbock; two grandsons, Jordan Hicks of Gruver and Austin Lancaster of Amarillo; and two great-grandsons, Max Wright of Perryton and Matt Allen of Spearman.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Weldon Green

GRUVER - Weldon Green, 83, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 15 at 3 p.m., in the Gruver Church of Christ with Gaylord Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Gruver Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Weldon was born to Coleman and Vivian Green on August 30, 1924 in Calisburg, Texas. He graduated from Gainesville High School and Abilene Christian College.

He married Elene Harland on July 27, 1948.

Weldon served the Lord as an Elder of Gruver Church of Christ. He served as a Hansford County Commissioner for six years and Hansford County Auditor for 29 years. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy.

He is survived by his wife Elene; two sons, Dee and wife Susan Green of Childress and Ron Green of Plano; two daughters, Genna Dunlap of Amarillo and Mittie and husband Dale Blackburn of Abilene; two brothers, R.C. and wife Betty Green of League City, TX and Bo and wife Becky Green of Abilene; three sisters, Adeline Wheeler of Albuquerque, NM, Virginia and husband John Alley of Springfield, MO, and Glenda Renner of Gruver; seven grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

The family request memorials to be to High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo TX 79114.

Cecil L. Reynolds

SPEARMAN - Cecil L. Reynolds, 86, died Tuesday, February 12, 2008.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 16, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Christian Church with Jim Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Cecil was born on October 29, 1921 in Booker, TX. He married Ellen Hash on February 4, 1947.

Cecil was a member of the First Christian Church of Spearman. He farmed and ranched for a few years before becoming a licensed plumber in 1953. He was a plumbing contractor until his retirement in 2000. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dallas & Mattie Reynolds; his wife, Ellen Reynolds; a son, Virgil Reynolds; a daughter, Becky Peterson; and two sisters, Evelyn Yancey and Gertrude Reynolds.

He is survived by one daughter, Katherine and Mark Coventry of St. Charles, MO; three granddaughters, Michelle and Danny Griffith of Camp Hill, AL, April and Jason Stephens of Amarillo and Tasha and Rudy Rodriguez of Fort Worth; one grandson, Barry Goodall of St. Charles, MO; three great-granddaughters, Katherine Griffith of Camp Hill, AL, Bonny York of Amarillo and Rane Rodriguez of Fort Worth; 11 great-grandsons, Brian and Brandon Ahlstrom of Camp Hill, AL; Kurtis and Jake Griffith of Camp Hill, AL, Chase Stephens of Amarillo, Christopher Goodall of Kansas, Camron Goodall of Indianapolis, IN, Alex, Rane and Nickolas Rodriguez of Fort worth; three brothers, Olanda and Anita Reynolds of Borger, Leslie and Billie Reynolds of San Antonio and Gene and Ramona Reynolds of Gruver; two sisters, Nathalie Turner and Dallasene Reynolds, both of Spearman.
