Verna Ivan Vernon-Allen
SPEARMAN - Verna Ivan Vernon-Allen, 90, died Thursday, June 19, 2008.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Ivan was born May 18, 1918, in Bullard. She moved from Texas to Oklahoma several times and had settled in Littlefield when, at 16, she made the decision to become a hairdresser.
She attended school in Lubbock and upon graduation relocated to Amarillo to begin her career.
Floyd Hays owned a barbershop with an area perfect for a beauty shop and perfect for a girl just like Ivan. So one day, Floyd walked into the shop where she was working and said he needed someone to go to Spearman to work in his shop. And Ivan said, "I'm your girl!"
The very first night Ivan spent in Spearman, she went to a dance escorted by a handsome barber from Floyd's shop. They danced all night long! Two months later, Ivan married G.N. "Pete" Vernon, who was 18 years her senior. They were happily married from 1941 to 1978. Ivan and Pete had three children who were the pride of their lives, Jan Sheets, Eldon Vernon and Terry Vernon.
Ivan remarried in 1982, to Delbert Allen of Gruver.
Ivan also worked as a hair dresser in several of her own beauty shops, as well as many others for 70 years, retiring at the age of 87. She was an employee at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home as a hostess for 20 years, retiring at age 89.
She had many talents as well, such as creating beautiful beaded jewelry and hand crocheting delicate doilies. Many family members and friends treasure these gifts from Ivan.
It has been said that every lady in Spearman and the surrounding counties must have at least one piece of Ivan's hand-beaded jewelry. Probably several pieces!
Ivan was a lifetime member of First Christian Church in Spearman.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Pete in 1978 and Delbert in 1989; her parents, two sisters; four brothers; and a grandson, John Banister.
Mamaw, we love and will miss you, but now release you to a glorious new beginning, until we meet again.
