Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home Amarillo, Texas.

Mrs. Sanders died suddenly, unexpectedly and without pain after a long series of debilitating illnesses, any one of which would have killed an ordinary person.

Eleanor Pearl Barnes Seedig Sanders was born July 3, 1939, in Shattuck, Okla., to Pearl Marie Fox Barnes and Frank Dalcolm Barnes. After her parents divorced in 1947, her mother married Louis Lee Seedig in 1949, and he adopted Eleanor. She attended schools in Follett, Higgins and Perryton and graduated from Spearman High School in 1957. Eleanor was a survivor of the Glazier-Higgins-Woodward F5 tornado of April 9, 1947. She, her mother, and four others rode out the storm underneath the back pews of the First Baptist Church in Higgins.

She married Emmett R. Sanders on Sept. 2, 1961, in Spearman. Although they divorced in 1975, they remained lifelong friends until his unexpected death on Dec. 13, 1990.

She received her associate's degree from St. John's College in Winfield, Kan., in 1959. She graduated from Panhandle State University in 1971 with Bachelor of Arts in social studies and English. She worked on a Master's in social work at West Texas State University and took many classes at Amarillo College. She loved attending classes and studying and earned 226 college hours.

After staying home with her children, who were born in 1962 and 1963, she started the Planned Parenthood office in Spearman from scratch in 1973. In 1974, she began her career with the Texas Department of Human Services, retiring in May, 2001. When asked in a StoryCorps interview in 2006 what she was most proud of, she said, besides her children, it was working for the same agency for 27 years.

She was a lifelong Democrat. She was on the boards of the Domestic Violence Council and Amarillo SPCA. She loved all animals and Las Vegas. Eleanor was a strong and independent woman long before that was popular.

The family wishes to thank the many medical professionals who helped them through this journey, including Dr. Pam Banister, Dr. Samuel Needleman, Dr. Assadour Assadourian, Dr. Prakash Desai, Northwest Texas Hospital, Triumph Hospital, and the excellent and compassionate care provided by the entire staff of Heritage Convalescent Center, where she had resided since June 4.
