Dean L. Church

Dean L. Church, 86, of Amarillo died Sunday, June 7, 2009.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in United Methodist Church of Vega with Jim Watkins officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Laurel Land Cemetery in Fort Worth. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St.

Mr. Church was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Carmen, Okla., and raised in Spearman. He married Mary Morris in 1949 in Fort Worth. She preceded him in death in 2003.

Mr. Church was in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He and Mary moved to San Antonio in 1953, where he worked for Kelly Air Force Base as an air plane mechanic.

They moved to Vega in 1964, where he farmed until 2006. He attended United Methodist Church of Vega and was a member of American Legion of Vega.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Max Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Church of Fort Worth; three nephews, David Rankin, Gary Zimmer and Mike Adams; and four nieces, Pat Johnson, Tamara Adams, Linda Rankin and Jana Zimmer.

The family suggests memorials be to Alzheimer's Association 322 Eighth Ave., seventh floor, New York, NY 10001.

Morgan Skyler Ross

GRUVER - Morgan Skyler Ross, 19, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, on the Venneman family ranch northeast of Gruver.

A memorial service were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spearman with Rev. Jose Gomez and family members participating.

Morgan was born on February 11, 1990 in Amarillo, Texas. She graduated with honors from Gruver High School in 2007 and briefly attended West Texas A&M until the interference of her 2 1/2 year struggle with brain cancer. She fought an amazing fight throughout her illness and never once complained or quit smiling. Her wonderful, selfless attitude was exemplary to all.

She will be sorely missed by everyone, especially her little cousins who called her "Mo-Mo".

Morgan was greeted in heaven by "Gramma Cracker" Janet Ross who passed away nine months ago.

Survivors include parents: Traci and Klint Venneman of Gruver and Vivian and Kenny Ross of Las Vegas, New Mexico; siblings Kennedy, Alexx, Liz and Jordan; grandparents Linda Koch of Amarillo, Loy Ross of Springer, New Mexico and Linda and Joe T. Venneman of Gruver; great grandmother Ollie Smith of Springer, New Mexico; and many cousins, aunts and uncles from all sides of the families.

The family suggest memorials be to The Morgan Ross Memorial c/o Gruver State Bank or to a favorite charity.

Wayne Flowers

CANADIAN - Wayne Flowers, 57, died Saturday, May 30, 2009.

Graveside services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009 in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Monte Kreis officiating. Arrangements were by Hughs Funeral Home.

Wayne was born Jan. 23, 1952, in Canadian to the late Joseph Gilman Flowers and Lois King Flowers. He was a 1971 graduate of Canadian High School.

He married Sally Jahnel on Aug. 13, 1989, in Las Vegas. Wayne was a lifelong resident of Canadian and was a rancher. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dustin Flowers and a sister, Sandra Sue Flowers.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Flowers of Canadian; three sons, David Flowers and wife Natasha of Clovis, N.M., Danny Flowers and wife Dawn of Canadian and Donnie Flowers and wife Stefanie of Lubbock; two brothers, Joe Flowers and wife Sammie of Gage, Okla., and Roy Flowers and wife Ann of Spearman; five sisters, Francis Newell of Canadian, Zella Meeks and husband Bob of Richardson, Pat Schaef and husband Larry of Boswell, Okla., Vickie Bolin and husband Bob of Chandler and Dixie Cook and husband George of Canadian; six grandchildren, Chantal, Cydnie and Casity Flowers, all of Clovis, Ethan and Tyler Flowers, both of Canadian, and Mackenzie Flowers of Lubbock; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

James 'Raye' Gibson

SPEARMAN - James 'Raye' Gibson, 100, died Sunday, May 24, 2009.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 36, 3009 in First Baptist Church of Spearman with the Rev. John Scott and the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home at Spearman.

Raye was born July 28, 1908, in Chillicothe. After graduation from Canute High School, Raye held several jobs including a school bus driver, a grocery clerk, an apple and orange picker in California and a construction worker on the building of Route 66.

After marrying the love of his life Helen Ruth Smith on Altus Oklahoma in 1942 he worked in Montgomery Wards for a while before landing in Spearman Texas in 1944. He worked at Russell Dry Goods for a short time before starting to work for Pete Fisher at the Cut Rate Grocery Store. While working there he was proud to be recognized as the Employee of the year by the Rotary Club of Spearman.

He retired from the grocery store after 42 years at the age of 85. However retirement was not to his liking so he started a used furniture business and also became the peanut and pumpkin peddler in the fall. He continued to sell peanuts until he was 100.

Raye was also a gardener and would grow vegetables just so he could give his friends and neighbors the fruits of his labor.

He had lived in the area since 1946, moving from Duncan, Okla. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spearman.

Rave loved meeting and talking with people. He loved living in Spearman and thought it was the best town in Texas. Above all he loved his family and was proud of each and every one. He would delight in our family celebrations and get togethers. He will truly be missed.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gibson; a son, Ronald Gibson; two daughters, Karen Cargill of Denver City and Cheryl Salgado and husband Frank of Spearman; four grandchildren, Connie Gibson of Lubbock, Ronda Jennings of Amarillo, Jennifer Jennings of Merkel and Jason Cargill of Denver City; and six great-grandchildren, Trae Dixon, Tarryn Dixon, Megan Jennings, Madclaine Jennings, Julia Cargill and Jared Cargill.

The family suggests memorials be to Stationmaster's House Museum, 30 S. Townsend St., Spearman, TX 79081; or Hansford Manor, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Nova Schubert Bair

Nova Schubert Bair was born January 5, 1911 in Iberia Mo. She died May 19, 2009 at Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville, TX.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo.

She resided in Amarillo and later moved to Garland Texas.

Nova graduated from West Texas State University in Canyon TX with a music degree and from Bible College. She taught piano at the Amarillo Conservatory of Music until she retired and still taught private lessons in her home. She composed music and was a poet having published several books, one such book is 'Journey to Jerusalem'. She was a world traveler gathering material for her poetry. She can be found on the internet under Nova Schubert Bair.

Nova was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she played the organ and hand bells. She will be missed by all of her family and friends, but we know that she is in heaven directing and singing with the choir of angles, composing music and writing poetry.

She is survived by 2 nephews, Burton and wife Suzie Schubert of Spearman, TX, Jerald and wife Becky Caldwell of Sachse TX and a niece Marilyn Schubert Groves and husband Fred Groves of Greenville TX, numerous great, nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 2 bothers, 1 sister and 1 nephew.

Aida Guadalupe "Lupita" Lozano

SPEARMAN - Aida Guadalupe "Lupita" Lozano, 51, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009.

Services were at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2009 in Union Church with the Rev. Don Baltazar officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Lozano was born May 18, 1957, in Morelia, Michocoan, Mexico. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Alfonso Lozano of Amarillo; a son, Edgar Lozano of Tulsa, Okla.; three daughters, Linda Pina of Lubbock, Diana Salcedo of Tulsa and Amelia Lozano of Amarillo; her mother, Lucia Diaz Barriga of Spearman; a brother, Hector Diaz Sr. of Spearman; three sisters, Bertha Ortiz and Araceli Camocho, both of Spearman, and Norma Llanas of Perryton; and five grandchildren.

Lorene Kunselman

SPEARMAN - Lorene Kunselman, 86, died Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Services were at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009 in First Christian Church with Jim Reeves officiating. Burial was in Texhoma Cemetery in Texhoma, OK, by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Lorene was born July 10, 1922. She married Darius Barnum in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1973.

She married Don Kunselman in 1975. He preceded her in death in 2004.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Spearman.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Freeman, in 2002.

Survivors include a son, Bill Barnum and wife Delma of Stratford, OK; two stepsons, Carl Kunselman and wife Janie of Spearman and Jim Kunselman and wife Verla of Plainview; two stepdaughters, Karen Clawson and husband Larry of Sudan and LaVon Reid and husband Randy of Denison; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church, P.O. Box 637, Spearman, TX 79081; or Hansford Manor, 707 Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Peter Frank Vigna

ANTIOCH, CA - Mr. Peter Frank Vigna, born December 8, 1918 and died May 3, 2009 at the age of 90.

Mr. Vigna, a native of Hibbing, MN, moved to the Bay Area in 1930; married Alice Pownell from North Dakota and settled in Antioch in 1946. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice of 50 years; and at the age of 82 remarried to Jeannette Infelise Bort who also preceded him. They made their home in Gruver Texas.

He was involved in many organizations and golf clubs. An active member and 3 times Man of the Year of the Antioch Chapter of YMI, past President of the Eagles. and past President of the Local 342 Golf Club. He made significant contributions to the Catholic churches in Antioch and Spearman Texas.

He worked as a welder/fitter and used his skill to create artistic furniture and play ground equipment; and patented a Christmas tree stand. Often described as a "character," there were rumors he was commissioned to build a couple of stills during prohibition. He built a home in Antioch with his two sons Frank and Gordon, passing along his many skills.

He touched numerous persons with his teaching, wisdom, compassion, understanding and humor.

Mr. Vigna leaves behind two step-brothers and a step-sister; his two sons Frank Vigna, Gordon Vigna; a daughter Karen Ribeiro-Soliz; daughter-in-law Judy Chandler Vigna; grandchildren Anneliese Ribeiro, Adam Ribeiro, Jennifer, Tommy and Traci Rasor; great-grandchildren Tyler and Alexis Ribeiro, and Brecker and Caleb Bort. Also his extended family, Steven and Jean Bort, Robert Bort, Anne and Ted Sykes, and Arthur and Elena Bort; grandchildren Lee, Akiko, Yuki and Daniel Bort; and several great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions in his honor should be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 901 S. Roland, Spearman, Texas 79801.

Juanita Lavern 'Grandma' Foster

SPEARMAN/KONOWA, OK - Juanita Lavern 'Grandma' Foster, 78, died May 12, 2009.

Funeral services will be held in the First Assembly of God Church of Spearman on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. with Maebell Travis officiating. Cremation will be by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

'Grandma' Foster was born in Holdenville, OK on October 18, 1930, where she grew up. She married Delbert Foster in 1948. They moved to California and raised their six children. Delbert preceded her in death in 2006.

Juanita moved to Spearman in 1998 and then to Konowa, OK in 2007. She lived her life enjoying her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her three sons, Gene Foster and wife Vickie of Brawley, CA, David Foster and wife Becky of Imperial, CA, Roy Foster and wife Debbie of Brawley, CA; one daughter, Linda Travis and husband Jim of Spearman; twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie and Frank Foster.

Lorene Kunselman

SPEARMAN - Lorene Kunselman, 86, died Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Christian Church with Jim Reeves officiating. Burial will be in Texhoma Cemetery in Texhoma, Okla., by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Lorene was born July 10, 1922. She married Darius Barnum in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1973.

Sammy Robert Arnold

GAINESVILLE - Services for Sammy Robert Arnold, 61, of Gainesville, were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Geo. J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Arnold officiating.

Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Geo J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Arnold died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.

Sammy is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Lori Prestage of Gainesville and Brad and Mary Arnold of Whitesboro; daughter and son-in-law, Brandi and Noel Gonzales of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Perry and Molly Arnold of Louisiana and sister and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Pat Jackson of Arkansas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ailene Arnold and his wife, Patsy Arnold in January 2005.

Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help with the funeral expenses.

Charles Leon Eaton

SPEARMAN - Charles Leon Eaton, age 70, died May 6, 2009. Graveside services will be in Hansford Cemetery Friday, May 8, 2009 at 2 PM with Reverend Jim Medley officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Charles was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma on May 15, 1938, he moved to Hansford County in 1960 from Dumas. He married Joanne Nelson, June 11, 1960 in Dumas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spearman, had served the area as a painting contractor and was a loyal O. U. fan. His parents, John and Veryl Eaton and a son, Chuck Eaton preceded him in death.

Joanne Eaton, wife, two daughters, Johnnie Fuller and husband Kelly of Lubbock, Cayla Schroeder and husband Don their sons Blayne and Brock of Spearman, three brothers, Jack Eaton and wife Cathy of Edmund, Oklahoma, Bill Eaton and wife Billie Dean of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and Tommy Eaton and wife Keithie of Newalla, Oklahoma survive him. Grandson, Brant Fuller of Amarillo, granddaughter Kaysha Fuller, grandson Bryson Fuller and granddaughter Kiersan Fuller of Lubbock, granddaughter Abbe Pierce her husband Kyle and son Preston of Fort Worth are survivors. From Dallas, granddaughter, Micah Eaton, granddaughter, Carrissa Hernandez, her husband Nathan and their daughter, Ava Hernandez, granddaughter, Cassie Holmes, and great-grandson Kylen Fuller, great-grandchildren Kyla, Kara and Cyson Wright and Mother in Law Marguerite Nelson of Spearman are survivors.

Nathalie Bernice Turner

SPEARMAN - Nathalie Bernice Turner, 85, died Friday, May 1, 2009.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in First Christian Church with Brent Thornton officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Turner was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Lipscomb County to Dallas and Mattie Reynolds. She married B.J. Turner on July 27, 1942, in Perryton. They made their home on their farm near Waka for 52 years. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church in Spearman.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Evelyn Yancy; a brother, Cecil Reynolds; three grandchildren, Adam and Sabrina Coffman and Jennifer Turner; and a son-in-law, Charles Cudd.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Cudd of Waka; two sons, Phillip Turner and wife Molly of Spearman and Larry Turner and wife Alesia of Abilene; three brothers, Olanda Reynolds and wife Anita of Borger, Leslie Reynolds and wife Billie of San Antonio and Gene Reynolds and wife Ramona of Gruver; a sister, Dallasene Reynolds of Spearman; a grandson, Mike Cudd of Waka; four granddaughters, Teressa Creswell of Perryton, Stormy Richardson of May, Okla., Deana Shields of Weatherford, Okla., and Cinda Wolf of Ulysses, Kan.; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Manor, 707 S. Roland, Spearman, TX 79081; or Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland, Spearman, TX 79081.
