George Marion Johnson
George Marion Johnson, 91, lifelong Texhoma area resident, passed away July 14, 2009 at the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart, Kansas.
George was born on March 10, 1918 in the Oslo Community to George Herman and Alta (Hitt) Johnson in which he was the first born of his generation in the community.
George was married to Joye Belle Turpen on March 8, 1941 in Guymon, Oklahoma.
He served his country proudly during World War II as Fireman 1st Class in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Bowditch during the Okinawa campaign where he was honorably awarded the Battle Star and the Asiatic and American ribbons. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on December 28, 1945.
He worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Western Gas Company, Southern Union Gas Company and the Southwestern Electric Company and retired with Texas County District #3 of Oklahoma in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years; an infant daughter, Donetta Belle; a son, Marion (Skip) Johnson; two granddaughters: Lindsay Ann and Lacey Lynne Loosemore; one brother, Russell Faye Johnson and one sister, Opal Mae Irwin.
Survivors include two sons: Walter (Jeep) Johnson and wife, Beverly of Altus, Oklahoma and Francis (Frittz) Johnson and wife, Susie of Maysville, Oklahoma; three daughters: Linda Schreiner and husband, Randy of Texhoma, Oklahoma, Mary Bankston and husband, Glen of Straight, Oklahoma, and Deann Loosemore and husband, Raymond of Texhoma; and daughter-in-law, Pat Johnson of Texhoma. He is also survived by one brother, John Johnson of Amarillo, Texas; four sisters: Elsie Ritter of Hugoton, Kansas, Myrtle Ann Hedgecoke of Irving, Texas, Grace Pierce of Amarillo and Nancy Bruner of Louisville, Kentucky; 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17th at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Guymon. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18th also at St. Peter's Catholic Church with Father Roberto Quandt, celebrant. Graveside services with U.S. Navy honors will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Texhoma Cemetery.

Shane Allen Vela
PERRYTON - Shane Allen Vela, 32, died Saturday, July 11, 2009.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Monsignor Joe Bixenman officiating. Burial will be in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.
Mr. Vela was born Dec. 1, 1976, in Perryton, where he had lived for 28 years, moving from Spearman. He was a pumper and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Survivors include his parents, Junior and Judy Vela of Perryton; a stepson, Alex Baca of Perryton; a daughter, Pricillia Vela of Perryton; a son, E.J. Vela of Perryton; a brother, Jayme Vela of Perryton; a sister, Mandy Hernisillo of Perryton; and his grandparents, Eusebio Vela of Rio Grande City and Pauline Bright of Cache, Okla.
Phyllis Owens
SPEARMAN - Phyllis Owens, 94, died Saturday, July 11, 2009.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hansford Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mrs. Owens was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Shattuck, Okla., and had lived in Spearman since 1936. She married Claude Owens on Nov. 13, 1938, in Clovis, N.M. He preceded her in death in 1989. Phyllis was a bookkeeper. She and her husband owned and operated Owens Sales Co. in Spearman for 21 years until 1973. She loved to crochet afghans and sew.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Elliott and husband Bill of Amarillo; two grandsons, Darren Elliott of Midlothian and Trent Elliott of Flower Mound; and four great-grandchildren, Garrett Elliott of Midlothian and Elizabeth Elliott, Drew Elliott and Wade Elliott, all of Flower Mound.

Robert Carroll Reed
STRATFORD - Robert Carroll Reed, 75, formerly of Stratford, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in Bakersfield, Calif.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009 in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Stone, pastor, officiating. Private burial was in Stratford Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Carroll was born March 5, 1934, in Stratford to William Glenn and Mildred Ione Reed. He was one of four children.
He graduated in 1952 from Stratford High School, and in 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Gamble.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and then went to college at Texas Tech University. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in mathematics. He then pursued additional graduate studies in math from the University of New Mexico.
After college, he worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory for the United States Energy Department from 1959 to 1962. He primarily worked on the IBM computer. It was a joint effort pioneering the way for computer evolution over the next two decades.
Carroll served in many technical and management capacities in the corporate world. He worked for several companies including Computer Sciences Corp., Citicorp and Bank of America.
While in the banking industry, he was one of the key contributors to the research and development of the modern ATM and the credit card machine at gasoline stations. He left the TTI/Citicorp to become one of the original founders of Teradata Corp., heading up research and development.
Carroll was a very private person and his family always came first in his life. He instilled core values in his children and grandchildren which were passed on to him by his parents.
For the last 48 years, he enjoyed life with family and friends while living in California. He had been a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes for more than 40 years before retiring to Bakersfield.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia Schoenhals.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Cynthia; a son, Larry Reed; a daughter, Cari Burnett and husband Ian; two brothers, Jack Reed and wife Gwen of Spearman and Bill Reed and wife Margaret of Stratford; four grandchildren, Krystal and Stephanie Burnett, Marine Pfc. Robert Thomas Reed and Michael Reed; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Timothy Andrew "Tim" Buschman
PERRYTON - Timothy Andrew "Tim" Buschman, 49, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009.
Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009 in Community Worship Center with the Rev. Michael Waterbury and the Rev. Kit Buschman officiating. Burial was in Ochiltree Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.
Mr. Buschman was born Oct. 26, 1959, in Perryton, where he lived all his life. He married Tina Bates on May 23, 1981, in Hooker, Okla. Tim was a farmer and rancher. He was a member and elder of Community Worship Center, a member of Gideons International, served with Kairos prison ministry and as associate pastor of Full Gospel Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Buschman, in 2003.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Andrew James Buschman and wife Angela of Amarillo and Austin John Buschman of Perryton; a daughter, Anita Joy Nine and husband Caleb of Slapout, Okla.; a granddaughter, Hallie Ann Nine of Slapout; a grandson, James Isaac Buschman of Amarillo; his father, Alvin Buschman of Perryton; and four brothers, Job Buschman of Lubbock, Kit Buschman of Amarillo, Terry Buschman of Spearman and Mark Buschman of Perryton.

Guillermo 'Will' Vera
BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV - Guillermo 'Will' Vera, 41, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, formerly of Spearman, died Monday June 22, 2009 at the UVA Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home Chapel Winchester with Chaplain Mark Ransom and Lt. Scott Sturdivant officiating. Burial was at a later date in Texas.
Will was born June 30, 1967, in Spearman, TX to Pete and Toni (Ramirez) Vera. He married Delilah D. Mays on October 31, 2008 in Winchester, VA.
He was a Correctional Officer for NRADC, in Winchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of Berkeley Springs, WV; a daughter, Bailey D'Anne Vera-Williams of Valley De Oro, TX; a granddaughter, McKenna; two sisters, Isabell McLeod and husband Freddy, and Elvira Hill all of Amarillo; three brothers, Pete Vera, Jr. and wife Kim, Johnny Vera and wife Brenda and Ruben Vera and wife Sybil, all of Spearman; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Selma Marie Dahl Reneau
SPEARMAN - Selma Marie Dahl Reneau, 91, died Saturday, June 27, 2009.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Faith Lutheran Church in Spearman with the Rev. Charles Meyer, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Hansford County Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mrs. Reneau was born Nov. 8, 1917, in the Oslo community, northwest of Gruver, to John O. Dahl and Jensine K. Rasmussen Dahl, who were immigrants from Norway and Denmark. She was baptized and confirmed at Oslo Lutheran Church in the Norwegian language.
She attended public schools in Oslo and Gruver and attended college at Clifton Junior College in Clifton and Amarillo Business College.
During World War II, she worked at Hansford County ASCS office, and later was a carrier for the Amarillo Globe-News.
Selma served as Hansford County treasurer for 12 years, retiring in 1978. She married James Windell Reneau in Spearman on Oct. 24, 1948.
The family wishes to thank the Seville Estate Assisted Living Center and Odyssey Healthcare for their wonderful and loving care of our beloved mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, John O. Dahl.
Survivors include three sons, Willie and wife, Cyndy, of Tomball, Gene Reneau of Amarillo and John and wife Becca of Wichita Falls; a daughter, Linda Short and husband Mike of White Deer; three grandsons; three granddaughters; a great-grandson; three sisters, Ingeborg Sogn of Guymon, Okla., Betsy Ward of Gruver and Doris Schibler of El Dorado, Ark.

Michael Andrus Adams
Mike was stolen from our hands but not from our hearts. Born December 6, 1958 to Fred and Maurine Adams, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He died June 28, 2009 at his home in Chandler, Arizona. Mike married his best friend Sharon Nollner May 5, 1978. They have one son, Ryan Michael Adams and new grandson, Declan Michael Adams who most unfortunately will miss getting spoiled by Grandpa Mike. Sadie, his best four legged friend, will just have to catch up to him someday in heaven. Mikes infectious smile lit up his face, he was a true friend in every sense of the word, a devoted husband with all of his soul and a proud father and grandfather with every fiber of his being. A son, a brother, an uncle a friend. If you are one of the lucky ones who have crossed paths with Mike at one time in your life you will be forever blessed. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at their cabin in Show Low, Arizona. He loved his family, he loved his life and lived it how he wanted, please share in our grief and celebrate his life as he would want us to. Floetta Virginia Harman
AMARILLO - Floetta Virginia Harman, 77, of Amarillo died Thursday, June 11, 2009.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in South Lawn Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Kinch officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Texhoma Cemetery in Texhoma by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Floetta was born Nov. 25, 1931, to Enis and Ella Riggins. She graduated from Gruver High School in 1951. She met Lyle Harman, and they married in 1952. She and Lyle lived in Texhoma from 1962 until 2004.
She was a homemaker and was very proud of her home and her family. While living in Texhoma, she worked in the church nursery, rocking sweet little babies during the services. Mr. and Mrs. Harman joined South Lawn Baptist Church after moving to Amarillo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include her husband, Lyle; three children, Glen Harman and wife Kendall of Amarillo, Beth Pearce and husband Steve of Seminole, Okla., and Nancy Pearson and husband Mike of Balko, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Ryanne Harman, Isaac and Ella Pearce and Chrissy, Sarah and Joshua Pearson; and four great-grandchildren.

Cecil Clarence Hodge
BORGER - Cecil Clarence Hodge, 82, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. James Berry, pastor of Southside Baptist Church, and Gary Sams officiating at graveside service. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mr. Hodge was born Aug. 2, 1926, in Athens to Robert and Emma Hodge. He married Ella Mae "Jackie" Jones on Nov. 11, 1944, in Altus, Okla.
Survivors include three sons, Cecil Kerry Hodge of Lefors, Thomas Robert Hodge of Borger and Lanise Dale Hodge of Gruver; three daughters, Peggy Jean White, Pam Leinen and Kathy Berry, all of Borger; 20 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

Ralph Herald McCune
SPEARMAN - Ralph Herald McCune, 96, died on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Hansford Manor.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Midway Church in Beaver County, OK with Rev. Harrol Waterbury and Jerry Howard officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Logan, OK by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Ralph was born in Beaver County, OK on April 18, 1913. He married Marjorie Howard in 1941. She preceded him in death in 2008.
Ralph was a dedicated farmer and rancher his whole life and began working the land with his Dad at the age of nine. He helped his father and brother raise some of the first wheat crops in Beaver County. Ralph's roots run deep in Beaver County. In fact, he lived within a three mile radius of his birthplace until 2008 when health reasons made him and Marjorie move to Spearman, TX. The number of time she has left his farm could probably be counted on two hands. As far as Ralph was concerned, the grass was never greener than in his own pasture.
Ralph has always been there to support his family, friends and community. He served on the Garrett School Board for over twenty years and was on the Beaver County Election Board for over thirty years.
Ralph was a faithful man and he believed that honesty was the most important virtue a man could possess. He came from the era that a handshake and his word was a bond not to be broken. He truly was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Although he may be gone, we all have wonderful memories never to be forgotten.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Bonita and Phil Scott of Bayfield, CO and Claudine and Bob Hardy of Spearman; two grandsons, Allen and Leslie Gardiner of Frisco, TX and Chad and Tara Gardiner of Frisco, TX; and a granddaughter, Allen and Leslie Hunzeker of McKinney, TX; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Nettie McCune; his wife of 67 years; a brother, Raymond McCune; and two sisters, Jeruscha Palmer and DeAlva Clark.

Edna A. Bassel
SPEARMAN - Edna A. Bassel, 93, died on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Hansford Manor.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Hansford Cemetery with Burl Buchanan officiating. Internment was under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman, TX.
Edna was born in Hansford, TX on November 15, 1915. She married J.D. Bassel, who preceded her in death in 1988.
Edna graduated from Spearman High School and Scott and White Hospital School of Nurses. She was an operating room nurse and a member of the American Red Cross Nurses. She joined the Army as a nurse in San Antonio. She served as a First Lieutenant in the 91st Evacuation Hospital over seas in WWII. Later she was a real estate broker.
As a member of the First Baptist Church in Brenham, she served as church librarian for many years. She was a member of the Jabez Deming Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo where she lived with her sister from 1988-2006. She supported the First United Methodist Church since moving to Spearman.
Survivors include a sister, Louise Vaught of Amarillo, TX; caregivers, her nephew and his wife Burl and Nellie Buchanan of Spearman; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Anita Bassel in 1955; four brothers, J.B. Buchanan, Paul Buchanan, Monroe Buchanan and J.W. 'Buck' Buchanan; four sisters, Virginia Cates, Helen Fisher, Lucille Allen and Ruth Tipton.
