SPEARMAN - Oscar Velez, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Hansford Cemetery with the Rev. Neeley Landrum officiating.
Mr. Velez was born in Fronteras, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Survivors include two stepsons, Henry Flores and Hector Flores, both of Spearman, two stepdaughters, Diana Flores of Biloxi, Miss., and Mary Pacheco of Columbus, N.M., four brothers, including Manuel Velez of Alamosa, Colo., and Lencho Velez of Oklahoma City; two daughters and a son; and 26 grandchildren.
Bob Covington
SHAMROCK - Bob Covington, 74, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Martin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors.
Bob Covington was born Dec. 28, 1934, in Gassville, Ark., to Don and Edna Lamb Covington. He grew up in Borger and graduated from Borger High School in 1953. Bob married Obie Adams on Feb. 6, 1954, in Raton, N.M. He attended West Texas College in Canyon and was a four-year starter in football for Coach Kimbrough. He was a member of the 1957 Tangerine Bowl Championship team and graduated in 1957. Bob and Obie moved to Shamrock in 1964, and he was involved in the oil and gas business as well as farming and ranching.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he was involved in the Awana and prison ministries. One of his greatest joys was the relationships he had with his family and friends. He was an avid fan and supporter of his grandchildren. Bob enjoyed fly fishing and the mountains in Colorado, as well as working on his farm with his family. He was a man of strong convictions and deep compassion and was an unselfish and generous giver. He helped many in need whether a friend or stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Edna Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Obie Covington; three daughters, Dayna Carpenter and husband Wyatt of Turpin, Okla., Tami Hargrove and husband Rick of Spearman and De-An Turner and husband Dale of Clovis, N.M.; three sisters, Donna Lee Scott of Fritch, Murrel Denbow and husband Bill of West Columbia and Fern Edwards and husband Wayne of Dumas; a brother, J.D. Covington and wife Frances of Big Lake, Mont; a brother-in-law, Ron Adams and wife Linda of Odessa; nine grandchildren, Ashli Peery and husband Patrick, Justin Carpenter, Coby Carpenter, Chalen Carpenter, Kade Carpenter, Dustin Turner, Dayne Hargrove, Brody Hargrove and Gena Hargrove; and two great-grandchildren, Kalen and Skye.

Nick Holt
GRUVER - Nick Holt, 81, died, Monday, August 10, 2009.
Burial will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Gruver Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Brad Reeves officiating. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Gruver United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors.
Nick was born June 10, 1928, in Dalhart to Coy and Eva Holt. He married Trixie Stout, his only love, on May 26, 1963, in Seymour, TX. He was a resident of Gruver all his life.
Nick graduated from Gruver High School in 1945 and rode bareback broncos in his younger years. He was devoted to the family business of cattle ranching and farming his entire life. He was a charter member of the American Quarter Horse Association and bred and raised horses for over 60 years.
Nick proudly served his country during the Korean conflict from 1950-1952 as driver for General James Van Fleet, commander of the U.S. Eighth Army and United Nations forces in Korea. He obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class and earned a Bronze Star and Air Medal for bravery.
Nick fell ill with an infection early Monday morning. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Survivors include his wife, Trixie, five daughters, Paige and husband Tom Speck, Holly and husband Jerrell Key, of Gruver; Sally and husband Joel Meek of Prattville, AL; Brooke and husband Joe Ruhlin of Eden Prairie, MN; and Roxane Holt of Dallas. He is also survived by two sisters, Comfort Winders and Elizabeth Holt, and two brothers, Pat and wife Georgia Holt, and Coy Miles Holt, all of Gruver. His grandchildren are Maggie, Nicholas, and Colton Key; Hannah, Ella, and Thomas Speck; Samuel, Rachel, Kathleen, and Patrick Ruhlin; and Nilani and Wen Meek; and many wonderful extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Ashley, and an infant son.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be for Gruver United Methodist Church or Gruver Scholarship Fund, c/o Amarillo Area Fund, 801 S. Filmore St., Ste. 700, Amarillo, TX 79101.
The family extends their gratitude to the faculty and staff of Baptist Saint Anthony's hospital of Amarillo for their compassionate care this summer.
Joe Harry Reiswig
BORGER - Joe Harry Reiswig, 83, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 in Borger.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Lieb Cemetery with Dr. Don Travis, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Joe was born on January 19, 1926 in Booker, TX and had been a Morse resident for 61 years. He served in the US Army as a PFC. He was with the tank destroyers and served as a clerk typist, was stationed in France and came home on board the Queen Mary. He was a mechanic for Morse Implement. Joe married Maxine Dortch on October 19, 1947 in Morse. He loved to fish, play computer games and work crossword puzzles. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Reiswig of the home, two sons - Gary Reiswig of Fritch, Travis Reiswig & wife Milana of Morse, two daughters - Judy Bouldin and husband Ted of Stratford, Gayle Crawford and husband Scott of Gruver, six grandchildren - Traci Sanders, Kim Bouldin, Shelby Reiswig, Becky Long, Mikala Luginbyhl, Kalee Duncan and eight great-grandchildren.

Sammy Don Jones
SPEARMAN - Sammy Don Jones, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel in Pampa with the Rev. Jim Medley, pastor of First Baptist Church in Spearman, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Pampa.
Mr. Jones was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Dallas. He married Edrie Morrison on May 28, 1955, in Pampa. He had lived in Spearman since 1959. He retired from Northern Natural Gas in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was a Navy veteran, serving in the Korean conflict, and a member of First Baptist Church in Spearman.
Survivors include his wife, Edrie Jones; a son, William A. Jones and wife Dianne of Odessa; a daughter, Wanda Adams of Pampa; and three grandsons, Travis Jones, Michael Jones and Daniel Jones.

Wanda Grace Smith
SPEARMAN - Wanda Grace Smith, age 85, died August 7, 2009.
Services were Monday, August 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Spearman with Reverend Neely Landrum officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery under arrangement by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Grace was born on January 5, 1924 in Hooker, Oklahoma. She married Donald H. Smith October 6, 1946 in Spearman, he preceded her in death in 2006. She was a homemaker and piano teacher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Spearman.
A daughter, Kathryn and her husband Darrell Edwards of Strongville, Ohio and a son David Smith and wife Marilyn of Amarillo, seven grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren survive her.

Felix L. Lopez Jr.
AMARILLO - Felix L. Lopez Jr., 55, of Amarillo died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spearman. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. Lopez was born July 10, 1954, in Bryan to Felix and Mary Jane Lopez. He had worked in construction.
Survivors include two daughters, Mirna Reyes of Hurst and Rose Emily Lopez of Spearman; a son, Felix L. Lopez III of Spearman; six brothers, Victor Lopez of Gruver, Juan Lopez of Spearman, Rick Lopez and Danny Cazarez, both of Borger, David Cazarez of Washington and Leroy Cazarez of Amarillo; two sisters, Sylvia Rivera of Borger and Lisa Cazarez of Lubbock; and four grandchildren.
Jerry DeSha
AMARILLO - Jerry DeSha, 66, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009.
Burial was after visitation Friday, August 7, 2009 in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mr. DeSha was born April 26, 1943, in Santa Anna to J.D. and Jennie DeSha. He married Joy Cole on June 5, 1964, in Olton. He received his bachelor's degree from West Texas State University and worked at the Texas Department of Health in the immunization department. He was a member of Shots Across Texas. He will be missed dearly.
Survivors include his wife, Joy DeSha; two sons, Johnny DeSha and wife Jerry of Spearman and Craig DeSha and wife Tammy of Amarillo; his mother, Jennie DeSha of Amarillo; a sister, Pat Stroud and husband James of Amarillo; seven grandchildren, John, Sarah, Madison, Lacie, Mike, David Joe and Shelby; and two great-grandchildren, Paisley and Paiden Joy.

Ada Joyce Stedje
GRUVER - Ada Joyce Stedje, 85, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in Spearman.
Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009 in Oslo Lutheran Church with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Oslo Lutheran Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon, Okla.
Ada Joyce Spivey was born to John and Jessie Spivey on June 18, 1924. Ada Joyce had a sister, Anna Marie, and a brother, Hix. She attended Gruver schools and graduated in 1942. In 1944, she graduated from secretarial school in Huntington Beach, Calif., and was employed by Gruver Elevators prior to her marriage. Ada Joyce married James Stedje on Feb. 3, 1946. They lived in the Oslo community northwest of Gruver. They had three children, Mike, Lynn and Marilyn.
Ada Joyce used her exceptional energy to help others. She was an active member of Oslo Lutheran Church. She loved music and was a lifetime member of the Gruver Music Club. She was active in the Golden Age Center in Gruver and enjoyed other senior citizens groups in the area. Ada Joyce shared her sewing and quilting talents with family, friends, church family and many charitable causes.
In 2004 Ada Joyce moved from Gruver to Whiterock Court Retirement Community in Dallas to be near her daughter. Returning to this area in 2006, she moved to Hansford Manor.
Her faith in God, love of family and friends, wisdom, sense of humor, integrity and generosity created a legacy of lives touched and enduring relationships. Ada Joyce was an inspiration to all who knew her.
The family is deeply grateful to Ada Joyce's caregivers, the devoted staff at Hansford Manor and Hansford Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Jessie Spivey; her beloved husband of 57 years, James Stedje; and a sister, Anna Marie Stedje.
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Hix and Charlene Spivey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Judy Stedje and Lynn and Jan Stedje, all of Gruver; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jack Doege of Dallas; eight grandchildren, Roy Don and Tamra Stedje Gammon, Tim and Julie Stedje, Brent and Julie Stedje, Steven "Buster" and Krista Stedje Davis, Sam and Jill Stedje Watson, Lee and Becky Stedje, Preston Doege and Mica Doege; and 15 great-grandchildren, Heath and Ashley Gammon, Megan, Travis and Kaitlyn Stedje, Callie, Bailey and Tyler Stedje, Michaela, Blaise, Luke and Jobi Davis, Lori Watson and John and Reed Stedje; and many other loved ones including nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, church family and neighbors.

BONHAM, TX - David Monroe McGuire, 67 died on August 3, 2009.
Graveside services will be held at Willow Wild Cemetery on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, TX.
David was born on May 17, 2942 in Bonham, TX, the son of Marvin Othle McGuire and Lorene McGuire.
Survivors include three children, Patty McGuire of Scott City, KS, David McGuire and Tammy McGuire, both of Corpus Christi, TX; one grandchild, Calvin Jarmer of Scott City, KS; his mother, Lorene McGuire of Spearman, TX; a sister, Joyce Davidson and a brother, J. L. McGuire, both of Tyler, TX.
Clifford 'Ikie Jo' Burl Griggs, Jr.
DUMAS, TX - Clifford 'Ikie Jo' Burl Griggs, Jr., 66, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009, in Dumas, TX.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Morrison Memorial Chapel Graveside services and burial will follow in Gruver Cemetery, Gruver, TX at 1 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Rusty Hancock, pastor of the Lincoln Street Baptist Church in Dalhart, TX.
Ikie Jo was born on January 31, 1943 in Iola, KS to Clifford and Elsie Mae Griggs. He had been a Gruver resident for 18 years before moving to Hartley and Dalhart for 23 years. He and his wife moved to Dumas about a year ago.
He had worked in cattle feeding all of his life, before retiring from Hartley Feeders in March of 2004. He married Patsy Winn on October 20, 1962 in Aztec, NM.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy, of the home; two sons, Charlie Griggs and wife Rhonda of Dalhart and Bobby Griggs and wife Sammie of Dumas; four daughters, Sherry McCormick and partner Jack Vandiver of Dalhart, Sandra White and husband Ronnie of Sulphur Springs, TX, Shelly Kelling and husband Alex of Dalhart and Amanda Dorsett and husband Sam of Dalhart; three brothers, John Griggs of Dalhart, Calvin Genn of Clayton, NM and Scott Genn of Pueblo, CO; a sister, Brenda Gallaway of Texline, TX; fifteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

C. Ralph Blodgett
SPEARMAN - C. Ralph Blodgett, age 88, died July 28, 2009. Services will be Friday July 31, at 2 PM in the Spearman First Christian Church with Reverend Beverly Cook officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery under arrangement of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Ralph was born August 23, 1920 in Ochiltree County. He married Johanne Studer on December 27, 1946 in Canadian Texas.
Mr. Blodgett served as Mayor of Spearman from 1976 until 1988, served as President of the Texas Municipal League in 1984, and past president of the Texas Tech ex-students association. He owned and operated B & B Grain and B & B Farm Industries for 50 years, was a staunch Democrat, and had three generations of Texas Tech graduates in his family. He was a pilot and owned his own plane for many years, was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church in Spearman and was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps.
Johanne Blodgett, his wife, a son DVM Glenn Blodgett and wife Karen of Guthrie Texas, and a daughter, Marilyn Cline of Spearman survive him. Three granddaughters, Buffie and husband Michael Guynes of Keller, Texas, Brandie and husband Mike Mustian of Weatherford, Texas, and Bethany Cline of Spearman and one grandson Grady and wife Heather of Elkhart, Kansas also survive him. Six great-granddaughters, Claire Guynes, Rebecca Guynes, and Catherine Guynes all of Keller, Texas, Shelby Sasser, Cambry Cline, Myla Mustian of Weatherford and one great-grandson, Rhys Cline of Elkhart survive him as well.

Melanie Marie Howell
BORGER - Melanie Marie Howell, 40, died Sunday, July 26, 2009.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Gateway Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Rawlinson, pastor, officiating and Steven Tarpley, youth minister, assisting. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mrs. Howell was born Dec. 5, 1968, in Borger. She married Jesse Howell on Dec. 31, 1988, in Porterville, Calif.
Survivors include her mother, Helen Sibley of Borger; her husband; a son, Kyle Howell of Borger; two daughters, Brittney Howell of Oklahoma City and Candice Howell of Borger; and two brothers, Shannon Sibley of Borger and Damon Sibley of Spearman.

Burl McClellan
GRANBURY -- Burl McClellan, 78, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009, in Fort Worth.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2009, at Granbury First Baptist Church. Burial: Glenn Cemetery in Hood County. Visitation: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Wiley Funeral Home.
Burl was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Commerce, Texas, to Arthur McClellan and Gladys Lorene Burns McClellan. He married Beryl "Day" Davis, July 16, 1955, in Memphis, Texas. Burl was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from East Texas State College, now Texas A&M at Commerce, with a degree in Journalism. He was a member of the Bluff Dale Baptist Church.
Burl was employed at the Hood County News and wrote a regular column, "The Tall Texan." He had previously been the news editor at the Memphis Democrat and the Winnsboro News, farm and ranch editor at the Amarillo Globe News and farm editor for KGNC-TV in Amarillo. He and brother-in-law, Jim Davis, started the Hansford Plainsman newspaper in Spearman, Texas, and the Village Weekly in Granbury.
Burl was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Day McClellan of Granbury; daughter, Luanne Carpenter and husband, Randy, of Bluff Dale; grandchildren, Chandler Carpenter, Maurley Carpenter, Kendall Carpenter and Landry Carpenter.
