Bill Jack Watkins

WACO - After a courageous battle with cancer, Bill Watkins passed away peacefully on May 31, 2010. His wife Connie was at his side throughout his struggle against the disease. Bill's doctors were amazed at the fight that he put up against the cancer and Bill's participation in the experimental treatment trials at MD Anderson will benefit those that will follow him as they to fight their own war against the insidious disease that took Bill from us.

A memorial service to celebrate the joy that Bill brought to us all will be 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, at First Presbyterian Waco, 1100 Austin Street. Love, laughter, and tears will be all be shared at the service and the family welcomes all that knew and loved our Bill.

Bill was born in Pasadena, Texas, on Oct. 7, 1942. Shortly thereafter, the Watkins family moved to Odessa, Texas. Bill graduated from Odessa High School in 1961 and it was in Odessa where Bill met the love of his life, Connie Jean Cary. Bill met Connie when they were both teenagers and Connie became his high school sweetheart. After graduating from Odessa High, Bill attended Texas Tech University and in 1966, Bill graduated with a degree in accounting.

The most important event of Bill and Connie's young life together was June 6, 1964. This was the day that Bill and Connie were married. What followed was a lifelong commitment to each other and to the family that they would create. Bill's wife and family were the most important thing in his life. It is no surprise then that Bill always placed the needs of his family and others before his own. To those that knew him, the description of Bill was the same. Bill was the kindest, most gentle and most thoughtful man that they had ever met.

From Lubbock, Bill and Connie left West Texas, and moved to Houston where Bill began his career in the Oil and Gas industry. Bill started his career with the Shell Oil Company. After six years with Shell, opportunity knocked at his door and his upward career path took him to Dow Chemical. Bill spent the next twenty years at Dow and from there he retired in 1993. Retirement from Dow became a spring board for Bill to start his own successful business.

In 1994, Bill and Connie moved to Central, Texas and Waco became there new home. While in Waco, Bill continued his hobby of gardening and soon discovered that his beloved roses would thrive under his careful attention. Bill's dream to own his own business soon became a reality. Bill and Connie established an accounting and tax services company for small businesses in the Central, Texas region. Bill faithfully serviced his clients for the next fifteen years and was still crunching numbers and filling out forms up until a few weeks before his untimely death.

Bill was a man of faith and his commitment to God and church was without question. He was a member and elder at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Houston and he was a member and elder at First Presbyterian in Waco.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, G.C. and Yvonne Watkins; and his sister, Gloria Burkhalter.

Bill is survived by a large and loving family. His wife of forty six years, Connie Jean Watkins. His children, Melissa Watkins Riley and husband, Kevin; Kelly Watkins Riggs Donald and husband, David; son, Jeffery Jack Watkins; brothers, Johnnie Watkins and wife, Delories, Tommie Watkins and wife, Sylvia, Jerry Watkins; sister, Sandra Ann Ritchie and husband, Gerald; grandchildren, Kaleigh Riggs, Brianna Riggs, Steven Watkins, and Sammy Watkins. Bill is also survived by a large number of very dear nieces and nephews, including Catherine Smith and husband Gary of Spearman.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas or to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030.
