AMARILLO - Austin H. Bowes, 79, of Amarillo died Saturday, July 3, 2010.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in First United Methodist Church in Canyon with the Rev. John McClean and the Rev. Manish Shirley officiating. Private family burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Mr. Bowes was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Grady County, Okla., to Austin and Lela Mae McNeely Bowes. He graduated from Kress High School in 1949 and attended West Texas State College on a football scholarship, graduating in 1952. He married Patsy Key in 1952 in Canyon. He then received his master's degree in education in 1957 from West Texas State.
Austin was a teacher and a coach in Quitaque, Kress, Spearman and Amarillo and was a farmer in Childress and Randall counties. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Canyon and the Crusaders Sunday School Class. He was a charter member of the Buffalo Club at WT. Mr. Bowes served in the Texas National Guard for 13 years during the Korean conflict in Company G. He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy; two daughters, Lynn McPherson and husband Bob of Amarillo and Ann Clark and husband Joe of Baird; four grandchildren, Lisa Weiss and husband Casey, Travis McPherson and wife Rebecca, Chelsa Wilkinson and husband Jason and Jud Clark; five great-grandchildren, Hunter and Austin Weiss, Claire McPherson, Alli and Ashton Wilkinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Jesus Ortiz Espinosa
SPEARMAN - Jesus Ortiz Espinosa, 83, died on Friday, July 16, 2010.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Sacred HEart Catholic Church with Father Ed Sweeney officiating. Interment will be in Hansford Cemetery under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Jesus was born in Ocampo, Guanajuato, Mexico on May 29, 1927. He married Catalina Matchuala in Ocampo, Guanajuato, Mexico on February 16, 1949. He had lived in the area since 1965.
Jesus was farm laborer and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Bracero Program and came to the U.S in 1952. In 1968 Claude Smith sponsored him and brought his whole family here. He worked in the ag sector his whole life and worked for Deakon Clement, Claude Smith and Don McLain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Candelario and Juana Espinosa; a daughter, Esperanza Puentes; and sons Candelario Espinosa, Francisco Espinosa and Jesus Espinosa.
Survivors include hsi wife, Catalina Espinosa of Spearman; four daughters, Guadalupe Ortiz of Spearman, Rosa Blan of Waka, Bertha Espinosa of Spearman and Margarita Espinosa of San Antonio; three sons, Carlos Espinosa of Mexico City, Mexico, Miguel Espinosa of Spearman and Ricardo Espinosa of Borger; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Shirley Maxine Link Wyssmann
SPEARMAN - Shirley Maxine Link Wyssmann, 81, died Thursday, July 8, 2010.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Covington Community Cemetery in Covington, OK. Interment will be under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman, TX.
Shirley was born on September 23, 1927. She married John D. Coombs, and later married John R. Wyssmann.
She was a super sports fan. Following the OU Sooners in football and KU Jayhawks in basketball.
Shirley was employed by Anthony High School as a secretary from 1964-1970. In 1970 she moved to Hereford, TX with her family and was employed for 20 years with Plains Insurance Company.
11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren will miss Grandma Shirley very much. She had made many friends during her four year stay at Hansford Manor, not only other residents, but caretakers as well, who will miss her.
Survivors include three sons, Randy & wife Linda Coombs of Spearman, David and wife Linda Wyssmann of Overland Park, KS, and Bobby Wyssmann of Olathe, KS; a brother, Richard and wife Joan Link of Tulsa, OK; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Betty Savage
PERRYTON - Betty Savage, 88, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 in Ochiltree Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Waterbury officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.
Betty was born Nov. 30, 1921, in Canadian to Ernest and Althea Clark. She married Raymond Fay Savage on Aug. 23, 1941, in Pampa. He preceded her in death in 2007.
Betty was a member of Church of the Brethren in Waka. She was self-employed and owned Betty's Dress Shop.
She taught Sunday school and played the piano at Notla Church and Community Building.
When her children were younger, she drove the school bus and worked at Corner Drug. She loved to bowl and play bridge with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Althea Clark; a son, Dustin Savage; and a daughter, Betty Fay Savage.
Survivors include two sons, Don Savage of Spearman and Russ Savage of Perryton; a daughter, Sue Ann Kile of Perryton; a sister, Jean Jones of Lawton, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

B.L. Davis
WACO - B. L. Davis, 91, went to be with his Lord and Master Friday, July 2, 2010, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco. Burial followed at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 6 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home, 6101 Bosque Blvd. in Waco.
B.L. Davis was born on Oct. 24, 1918 in Murchison and grew up on a cotton farm near Chillicothe. He volunteered for the U.S. Army in 1938 at the age of 16 and he was honorably discharged in 1940.
He met the love of his life, Mary Ellan Gause in Abilene and they were married on March 29, 1941.
B.L. was drafted back into the U.S. Army in 1942 serving as Drill Instructor at Fort Knox, Ky., from 1942 until 1944. Sgt. Davis was ordered to the European Theater in May of 1944 and served until the end of the war in 1945. He served with valor as a tank commander in the Tenth Army.
B.L. fought in the Battle of the Bulge, The Relief of Bastogne and was seriously wounded on April 18, 1945, and was listed as missing in action. When the war ended, B.L. was still hospitalized in Nancy, France. He was awarded The Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and One Oak Leaf Cluster for his service in combat. He returned to the USA on a hospital ship during Christmas of 1945.
He surrendered to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1951 at Summit Baptist Church in Amarillo.
B. L. earned his BA Degree from Howard Payne University and BD Degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He served as pastor at Brooke Smith Baptist Church, Rocky Creek Baptist Church near Brownwood, East Cisco Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Seagraves, First Baptist Church Hereford, Alum Rock Baptist Church San Jose, Calif., and San Jacinto Baptist Church Amarillo and part-time pastor at Falcon Head in Marietta, Okla.
B.L. was the Director of the Amarillo Baptist Association from 1975 through 1986. During this time, he served as chairman of two city wide crusades for Amarillo.
He helped break ground for High Plains Baptist Hospital and served as a Trustee for nine years. B.L. lead and preached the Gospel in several world wide crusades, The Philippines1963 and 1968, Encounter California 1967, Japan 1972, Seoul, Korea 1973, 1975 , 1977 and 1984, Racife, Brazil 1981, 1982 and 1985 and Paris, France 1976.
He also led two area wide Latin American Crusades in Hereford. B.L. retired from full-time ministry on December 31, 1986. He moved to Waco in July 1998 and was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church at the time of his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Dixie Lee Davis, in 1944; and his wife, Mary Ellan Davis, on July 29, 2003. They were married for 62 years at the time of Ellan's passing.
He is survived by his children, Dian Taylor and husband Don of Waco and Mike Davis and wife Mary Kay of Austin; a sister, Mary Frances Ward of Amarillo; grandchildren, Doak Taylor and wife Pam of McKinney, Doug Taylor and wife Katherine of Aura, Uganda, Davis Taylor and wife Cortney of San Antonio, Evaney Priolo and husband George of Amarillo, Scottie Davis and wife Janeth of Morse, Kerry McGill and wife Mary of Austin; and great-grandchildren, Peyton, Holden, Dillon, Haven and Canyon Taylor, Kylie, Karis and Caleb Taylor, Kristlyn, Bryce, Mia and Kendall Taylor, Olivia Kirk, Hartley and Presley Davis, Greyson McGill and Ireland McGill.

Ruth Crawford
A casual gathering to celebrate the life of Ruth Crawford was held on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Chapel in Rockdale, Texas.
Ruth was born June 12, 1932 in Grimes, Oklahoma to R.Y. and Beaula Jones. She passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 at her home in Rockdale, reaching the age of 78.
On March 20, 1949, she and Robert Crawford were married in Shamrock, Texas. She lived the past 22 years in Rockdale where she was a member of Rockdale Christian Church, Women's Fellowship, VistaCare Hospice Volunteer, Rockdale Area Caring Friends and Thursday Reading Club. Ruth was retired from bookkeeping with their family farm store.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert on August 6, 2002 and a sister, Patsy Siefken.
Surviving; Son, Jay Crawford and wife Jayne of Austin and their son Mickey Crawford of Austin. Daughters, Sue Prince and husband Gary of Arlington and Linda Culberson and husband Jim of Yazoo City, Mississippi. Brother, Myrl Jones and wife Lorene of Radford, Virginia. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews including Stephen Jones and Vicki Ramsay.

Toni Alice Walker
Toni Alice Walker, 59, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2010 in Las Vegas, NM.
Toni was born in Spearman, TX to Roy Walker and Essie Belle (Tomlinson) Walker. Toni had lived in Las Vegas for four years. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Previously she lived in Gruver, Amarillo, Albuquerque and North Carolina then back to Albuquerque. She lived in Edgewood, Estancia, and Mountainair, New Mexico. She was married to Richard Klitzke for nine years in the 1980’s.
Toni was preceded in death by her father, Roy Walker.
She is survived by her mother, Belle Roberts and father David Roberts of Edgewood, NM; brother, Larry Walker of Edgewood, NM and brother, Allen Walker of Gruver,TX ; sister, Valerie Roberts Barns of Orlando, FL and nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 2700 Old 66 Highway in Moriarty, NM with Rev. Robert Hunt Officiating. Burial was held at Mountain Valley Cemetery in Edgewood, NM.
Arthur L. "Art" Born
PERRYTON - Arthur L. "Art" Born, 75, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Community Worship Cemetery with the Rev. Butch Herron officiating. Burial will be in Heart Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.
Art was born Aug. 28, 1934, in Garden City, Kan. He married Doris Bechtold on Dec. 21, 1956, in Booker. She died in 1996.
Art was a veteran of the U.S. Army. After spending two years in the Army, he returned to Booker, where he went into business as Gartan and Born Redi-Mix for five years and then Born's Redi-Mix until 1973. At that time, he operated Born's Furniture Store and Drapery. In 1978, he purchased Perryton and Spearman Redi-Mixes which he operated with his son, Leslie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Kathryn Born; his wife; and a daughter, Cynthia Howell, in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Lyndon Born and wife Olga Y. and Leslie Born, all of Perryton; two sisters, Esther Garton of Booker and Dorothy Lee of Denver; two brothers, Vernon Born of Dallas and Gerald Born of Booker; three granddaughters, Diana Mendoza of Perryton and Mandy Morgan and Lyndi Casas and husband J.C., all of Amarillo; and five grandsons, Jared Born and wife Valarie of Amarillo, Colby Born of Perryton, Bruce Howell, Brian Howell and Rodney Howell.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Edward Thomas Rafferty, Jr.
AMARILLO - Edward Thomas Rafferty, Jr. died June 24, 2010 in Amarillo, Texas.
Services will be held Monday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gruver. An additional memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 29, at 2:00 pm in Amarillo at The Continental, 1300 S. Jackson.
Ed was born July 8, 1923 to Agatha and Edward Rafferty in Liberal, Kansas. Ed attended the Pleasant Hill School located on the family homestead and he later graduated from Gruver High School. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1943 and was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. He served in Patton’s Third Army in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He married Margery Brewer in 1945 in Bryan, Texas. They returned to Gruver where he farmed and ranched until the end of his life. He established Palo Duro Feeders, one of the first commercial feedyards in the area. Ed was proud of his Irish heritage, of being a Texas Aggie but he was most proud of his country. Being a combat veteran, he understood the price of freedom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Colleen, and his daughter, Sandy.
He is survived by his sisters, Johna Bonnot of Edna, Texas, and Pat Rafferty of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his daughter Molly Rafferty of Amarillo, Tx and his son, Barney Rafferty and wife, Vickie, of Waco, and his former wife and friend, Margery Rafferty. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Trevor Cone, Sean Cone, Erin Hemelstrand, Stacey Smith, Jennifer McCormick, and Tommy Rafferty. He is survived by four great- grandsons, Dillon Cone, Carter Cone, Kaiden Cone, and Duncan Hemelstrand. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to Accolade Home Health and particularly, Eric Rodgers, Marilyn Kiser, and Denia James for their loving care of Ed during his last months. Betty Jane Bess
Betty Jane Bess, 82, died Sunday, June 20, 2010 in Spearman.
Services will be 2pm Thursday June 24, 2010 at Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Forsythe officiating and Philip Hudson, Pastor of Fellowship Baptist in Spearman assisting. Interment will be in "The Garden of Devotion" at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mrs. Bess was born on November 14, 1927 in Henrietta, TX and had been a Borger resident for 67 years. She was a homemaker and member of Bible Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband Happy Bess after 55 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by six brothers – Clayton Ennis Holder, Alva Elmer Holder, Floyd Benjamin Holder, Windell Ray Holder, Robert Ennis Holder, Eugene Paul Holder, five sisters – ruby Mae Holder, Mary Ruth Holder, Edna Evelyn Holder, Alma Lea Holder and Ida Belle Holder.
She is survived by her son – Donald Bess of Waco, daughter – Mary Catherine Moore and husband Donald of Spearman, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Christopher Scott Matherly
CHESTERVIELD, VA- Chris Matherly 18, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Chesterfield, Va.
Christopher Scott was born March 9, 1992 in Springfield, Mo. He loved his family, friends, music, and the colors black and red. He was goofy and a lot of fun.
As he was giving in life, he is giving with his passing. Two organ recipients’ lives have been changed forever because of Chris's gifts. In accordance with Chris's wishes, he was cremated.
The family wants to thank all the emergency responders, the staff at VCU, and LifeNet for all their caring and expertise.
Chris is survived by his Mom, Janna Schaeffer, and brother, Anthony Schaeffer, both of the family home in Powhatan; his stepfather, Jason Schaeffer of Chesterfield; his Grannie and Granddad, Ann and David Burch of Aurora, CO; Nana and Papa of St. Joseph, MI.; his great-grandparents, lovingly known as Ma and Pa, Estelle and the late Bill K. Jackson of Spearman, Greatgran, Papa and Bernadine, aunts, uncles, and cousins of Texas, including great-aunt Kay and Dan Wade of South Padre Island, great-uncle Jim and Frances Jackson of Amarillo, great-great aunt “Auntie” Mary Fern Terry and great-great aunt Barbara and Morris Rosser all of Spearman; Skooter; and friends everywhere who all loved him dearly and will miss him every day.
Celebration of Chris's much-too-short life was Saturday, June 19 at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Central Baptist Church, 1500 Courthouse Road, with Dr. J. David Turner officiating.
