Jerry “J.J.” Etheredge
Jerry “J.J.” Etheredge, 56, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Southwest Baptist Church. Burial was in Llano Cemetery by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.
Jerry was born Jan. 22, 1955, in Lubbock to Waymon and Wilma Etheredge. He was raised and went through school in Spearman. Jerry loved to work and has been a hard worker since he was a young boy. He started branding cattle with his father when he was just 6 years old.
As he grew up, work became even a bigger part of his life. He was a heavy equipment operator for many years, he worked for Old Pal Construction before owning his own company. He loved horses, going dancing, cooking, barbecuing and spending time with his friends and family. He will be remembered for his willingness to help others and his big heart.
Survivors include two sons, John Etheredge and wife Laurie of Amarillo and Jim Etheredge and his wife Kristie of Lindale; his wife, Vanessa Etheredge of Amarillo; his parents, Waymon and Wilma Etheredge of Burkburnett; two sisters, Cindy Blume and husband Ray of Henreitta, and Connie Millard of Cedar Park; a brother, Joe Etheredge of Leander; aunts and uncles Charles and Frankie Skinner of Childress and Carl and Willa Condron of Waco; and five grandchildren, Jake, Heather, Rhiley. Max and Billy.
Dennis Earl Brooks
Dennis Earl Brooks, 56, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2011.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 in the Brazos Trail Cowboy Church off Sharla Smelley Road. Interment was in the Bethesda Cemetery. Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Dennis was born April, 21, 1955 in Pampa, Texas. He was a graduate of McLean High School in 1974 and was currently a welder. Dennis was also a member of the Brazos Trail Cowboy Church and the Southwest Team Penning Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and LaVerne Brooks and his nephew, Kennith Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Letha Brooks of Weatherford; two sons, Chris Brooks and wife Amy, of Grandview, Texas and Cody Brooks and wife Kacie, of Cleburne, Texas; one daughter, Catrina Kidd and husband Mark, of Weatherford; six grandchildren, Trevor, Tucker, Trentin, Tayler, Rendyn, and Colton; one sister, Cindy Walton and husband Joe, of Stamford, Texas; one brother, Ed Brooks and wife Heather, of McLean, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
E. Joy Crooks Mitchell
AMARILLO - E. Joy Crooks Mitchell (83) entered the arms of Jesus August 21st. She leaves behind her son, Mike (Debbie), granddaughter Christie (Ryan) Black, grandsons Erik (Alana), Bradley, Karl (Casey), and Kirk, daughter-in-law, Stephanie, brother Harold (Joyce) Crooks, sisters-in-law, Mary Joyce (Vernon), and Kathleen (Howard), numerous nieces and nephews, and scores of friends from church, golfing, bicycling and bridge. She was preceded in death by her son, David, her parents, Harry and Flossie Crooks, brothers, Howard Flint and Vernon Crooks, and sister, Ruby (and brother-in-law J.F.) May.
Joy was born near May, Oklahoma, but the family moved to the panhandle of Texas before she was three, when Pop bought a half section of land near Spearman, Texas. She told stories of listening to programs on the radio, living through the Dust Bowl, herding sheep, plowing corners “neater than anyone,” stacking feed, having three brothers in the service during World War II, milking cows, driving a tractor, and hauling grain to the elevator. After graduation, Joy attended West Texas State Teacher’s College (now West Texas A & M) in Canyon, Texas. She didn’t quite complete her college education because she married Donald Mitchell. They welcomed two sons, Mike and David, and lived in Amarillo, La Junta, Colorado, back to Amarillo, before moving west to Albuquerque in 1966. Though she lived in Albuquerque the rest of her life, Joy always called herself a “tough old Texas gal”.
Following her retirement, Joy traveled, eventually making it to nearly 30 countries, besides going throughout the US. Many of those trips were bicycling tours.

Estella Elizabeth Morris
AMARILLO - Estella Elizabeth Morris, 89, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, in Amarillo. A graveside service were at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2011 in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Jones, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Estella was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Austin County, the fourth child and only daughter of Basil Jon and Ella Garnett. The family moved to Hansford County in 1931 and Estella graduated from Spearman High School in 1940 as valedictorian of her class. She received a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, and while attending the university she met Tom Morris, a law student. They were married June 14, 1943, in the middle of World War II, while he was serving as a Naval aviator. She continued her education at the University and graduated in 1945 with highest honors, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics and nutrition. She was a member of the Omicron Nu Honor Society.
When World War II was over and Tom returned to the University to complete his law degree, Estella worked as a laboratory technician for the Texas Health Department for two years, and when she and Tom moved to Amarillo in 1949, she worked as a laboratory technician for the Amarillo City Health Department until her first child was born in 1952. Thereafter, her primary focus was on her family but she continued her interest in education and was an active member of the American Association of University Women, serving one term as president and hosting the state convention in Amarillo. She did volunteer work at the Amarillo Museum of Art for nearly 20 years, was a member of docents and was chairwoman of that group for one year. She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school while her children were in school.
Estella loved her friends, too numerous to name, but she wanted to express her appreciation to some special friends, Lynn and Irvin Wall, Betty Sterquell, Gwen Patterson, Enid Bates and Allegra Bush, and to the staffs at Bivins Memorial Nursing Home, Childer’s Place and BSA Hospice who cared for her in her last years of declining health.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Stanley Garnett, Wesley Garnett and Howard Garnett and their wives.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Morris; two daughters, Linda Willard and husband David and Vicki Fineran and husband Martin; five grandchildren, Sheena Fineran, Mallorie Benjamin, Skye Fineran, Autumn Fineran and Auroelle Fineran; three nephews, Howard Stanley Garnett, Wesley Garnett Jr. and Jon Michael Garnett; one niece, Lynn Riley, and numerous grandnephews and nieces. On Tom’s side of the family, she is survived by two brothers-in-law, Minter I. “Jack” Morris and Ennis R. “Tut” Morris; two sisters-in-law, Alice Willis and Lois Morris; four nephews-in-law, Jimmy Morris, Dean Morris, Keith Morris and Thomas Willis; and six nieces-in-law, Elizabeth Roof, Lynette Morris, Patti Noel, Alice Link, Deborah Escobar and Leigh Ann Roma.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
Flavil Shirley Ayers
SPEARMAN — Flavil Shirley Ayers, 88, of Spearman died Wednesday Sept. 7, 2011.
Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2011 in the Church of Christ with Calvin Chapman officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mr. Ayers was born July 23, 1923, in Macomb, Okla. Mr. Ayers was a mechanic and owned and operated his own shops in Spearman and Gruver. He was well respected in the communities he lived in and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Ayers was a missionary in Faith, S.D., for more than 12 years. He had a major influence in the growth of the Church of Christ in the Dakotas and surrounding areas. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and preached part time, performing numerous weddings and funerals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Ayers; a daughter, Shirley Marlene Nesbeth Ayers; and two sisters, Oleta Thomas and Theresa Raugh.
Survivors include a son, Glen Edwin Ayers of Plano; two brothers, Vance Ayers of El Reno, Okla., and Altus Ayers of Oklahoma City; a granddaughter, Kasandra Harris of Canyon; and two grandsons, Glen Scott Ayers and Trevor Austin Ayers, both of Garland.
Mildred V. Smothermon
SPEARMAN — Mildred V. Smothermon, 93, of Spearman died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011.
Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 2011 in Santa Cruz United Methodist Church, Espanola, N.M., with the Rev. Cecelia Lorenzen officiating. Burial wasin Holy Cross Cemetery, Santa Cruz, by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Spearman.
Mrs. Smothermon was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Blooming Grove. She married Ches Smotherman in 1941 in Lefors and taught in junior and senior high school for many years in Espanola.
Survivors include a sister, Wanda Archer of Spearman; and a brother, Raymond Vaughn of San Antonio.

Dara DeNee’ Bridwell
PAMPA — Dara DeNee’ Bridwell, 20, “God’s little angel on Earth” went back to heaven on Aug. 27, 2011.
Celebration of life services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, in First Baptist Church in Skellytown, with Brother Fines Marchman officiating.
Dara was born in Amarillo on April 9, 1991, to Earl and Loretta Bridwell. She had been an employee of Dominos Pizza since 2007.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Argues and Genelta Poole, Uncle “Butch” Poole; and paternal grandparents, Raymond Bridwell and Vennie Petty.
Survivors include her parents; her husband, Joel Hornsby of Pampa; three brothers, Brent Bridwell and wife Carol Puga of Torrance, Calif., Brian Bridwell and finacee Patsy Nichols of Pampa and Wyatt Bridwell of Spearman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Isidora “Lola” Martinez Salgado
STANTON, TX - Funeral services for Isidora "Lola" Salgado were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Tim Schwertner officiating and Deacon Clemente Villa assisting. Interment followed at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Isidora, age 89, passed away in Stanton. She was born in San Antonio del Bravo, Chihuahua, Mexico, on April 4, 1922. Her parents were Felix Martinez and Lyz Prieto.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Salgado; son, Abelado Salgado; and her parents, Felix and Lyz Martinez.
She married Jose Salgado on February 3, 1942. She was a homemaker for her family all her life. Isidora was also a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Irma Porras of Odessa, Maria Antonia Pena of Greenwood, Elodia Bravo of Stanton and Linda Garcia of Odessa; three sons, Frank Salgado of Spearman, Jose Salgado of Greenwood, Guillermo Salgado of Spearman; sisters, Cruz Sanchez of Stanton, Sophia Townes of Kermit, and Gloria Torres of Des Moines, Iowa; two brothers; Benjamin and Jose Martinez of Odessa. She also had numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The pallbearers were her grandsons, Stephen Santiago, Joey Salgado, Edgar Pena, Eric Pena, Anthony Bravo and Mathew Garcia. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Stanton Memorial Funeral Home & Chapel.
Cone Wilson Johnson
HAPPY - Cone Wilson Johnson, 97, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, in Tulia.
Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 in First Baptist Church in Happy with the Rev. Paul McQuerry officiating. Burial was in Happy Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors.
Cone Wilson Johnson was born July 21, 1914, to Wash and Ella Redding Johnson in Caldwell. He married Edith Marie “Sweetie” Miller on June 17, 1942. In 1934, he moved from Honey Grove Texas to Happy. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in England from 1942 to 1945.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Marie “Sweetie” Johnson; sons, Randy Miller Johnson and Larry Jim Johnson; his parents, Wash Wilson Johnson and Ella Roxie Johnson; and siblings, William Fagan Johnson, Arch Washington Johnson, Dorothy Grace Johnson, Helen Ethel Johnson and Walter Keat Johnson.
He is survived by a son, Ronnie Johnson and wife Jeanne of Happy; a grandson, Jay Wade Johnson and wife Bilynn of Happy; a granddaughter, Roxie Johnson and husband Rex Ralston of Gruver; great-grandchildren, Saxton Ralston, Texann Ralston, C.W. Johnson and Lynnlea Johnson; a brother, Reggie Johnson and wife Connie of Happy; a sister, Bernice Johnson Jennings of Moore, OK; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Viewing and receiving of friends and family will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in Happy’s Memorial Chapel.
