FORT WORTH -- Ernest B. Lawrence, 86, a professional classical and opera singer, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at home.

Ernest B. Lawrence was born June 22, 1911, in Nacogdoches. He was the son of Jesse P. and Ora Alma Lawrence. He went to New York City in 1937 to study voice with Edgar Schofield. He met Telete Zorayda Lester there, another student of Schofield. He then studied voice with famed tenor Paul Auldhaus, the first American-trained tenor to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. He was associated with Billy Rose's Aquacade and sang for many years with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. He sang numerous leading tenor roles with the San Carlo Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Pacific Opera Company before accepting appointment to the faculty of the school of fine arts at Texas Christian University. He was, for many years, director of music at Magnolia Avenue Christian Church and later was tenor soloist at First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Lawrence was always a leading tenor and sang hundreds of performances in the Italian repertoire. His phenomenal ear for sound resulted in flawless Italian dialect. In later years, he worked for Banker's Life of Des Moines (now The Principal) and retired as senior agent. He was active in Rotary, being a lifetime member. He was active in civic activities including serving several terms as president of the Fort Worth Retarded Children's Association. He was also a member of the Southside Rotary Club, serving two terms as president.
In 1939, he married Telete Zorayda Lester, now professor emeritus of speech pathology at TCU.
Survivors: His wife, Telete Zorayda Lester Lawrence; son, James Lester, senior vice president and dean of the College at the College of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughter, Valerie Alma, of St. Coletta School in Jefferson, Wis.; and twin sister, Berenice, of Federal Way, Wash.
