Cecil Nathan Pearson was born April 2, 1903, in Wooster, Ark. He will live forever in the hearts of those who have had the privilege of knowing him. He lived through one of the most dynamic periods in the history of our country.
At age 17, he began a career in the oil fields, rapidly moving up from a roughneck and driller to a tool pusher, then on to operating his own drilling company. In 1929, he drilled a well in Oklahoma City, which was the biggest producer in the state at the time. He worked all the major oil strikes throughout Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Illinois, until retiring from the oil business in 1970. To listen to him speak of his oil field days was to hear the lusty, adventurous tales of our oil heritage in Texas -- of bunk house living and high-stakes card games that rivaled the high stakes games of life in the fickle boom or bust oil fields.
Cecil also loved horses. His pride and joy was "Miss Very Unique," a world's champion 5-gaited mare. Later, Cecil developed a string of Quarter Horse and thoroughbred horses that made frequent appearances to the winner's circle at tracks in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and California.
In 1988, he established and endowed the "Cecil & Alice Pearson Pediatric Emergency Center" at Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. In addition, he contributed to Southeastern State University in Durant, Okla., as well as contributing to scholarships for equine studies at Texas A&M University.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice.
Survivors: Daughter, Maurine Pearson; son, Cecil N. Pearson II; eight grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.
