Hazel spent most of her life in Baytown, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1941. She was active in school affairs as a twirler in the Lee Brigadiers and as a vocalist for the school orchestra. She graduated from Lee College in 1945. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968, graduating with honors from the University of Houston.
She married Lt. James B. Nelson, a Navy pilot in 1942. He was reported missing in action in 1944, shortly before the birth of her only daughter, Patricia Fitch of Nacogdoches. In 1952, she married Robert E. (Bob) Bletsch who passed away in 1995. Following his death, she moved to Nacogdoches to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, George Fitch.
She had a long and varied career. Her earliest job was as a cashier at the Texas Theater on Texas Avenue in Goose Creek, later named Baytown. She additionally worked for DuPont, Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation, Lee College, teaching in the GED Program, and part-time at Exxon Chemical. She taught 4th grade at Baker Elementary in LaPorte and as an executive secretary for the LaPorte ISD.
She was a member of the 39 Study Club, a long time member and Sunday School teacher at Memorial Baptist Church. She did beautiful china painting and was an avid reader of history. She never lost a quest for learning and she was admired as an astute businesswoman. She enjoyed traveling, with Europe and the Orient being some of the high points of her travels. Once moving to Nacogdoches, she began volunteering as a substitute Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church. Hazel was known for her wit, charm and being a gracious lady. She was never at a loss when it came to the social graces.
She is survived by her beloved daughter and husband, Patricia and George Fitch of Nacogdoches; granddaughter and husband, Holly and Stephen Takach of Baytown; grandson and wife, Ross and Carrie Batson of Carrollton; great-granddaughters, Morgan and Rebecka Takach of Baytown; sister, Marguerite Chandler of Brenham; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Harrison of Conroe and Norma Jean Ferguson of Honolulu, Hawaii; exctended family, Pam, Alan, and Reagan Fitch of Nacogdoches; numerous cousins, neices, and nephews.
