Thelma B. Park
ARLINGTON -- Thelma B. Park, 96 years young, a renowned local artist, died Wednesday morning, July 23, 1997, after several weeks at an Arlington hospital.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Graveside service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home. The family will be pleased to see you there.
Mrs. Park was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Forrest L. Park, in 1971. He affectionately referred to her as "Freckles." They were not only husband and wife, they were friends.
Mrs. Park is well known in Southwest art circles for her watercolor pictures, large scale murals and ceramic mosaic wall hangings. One, in the Oklahoma City Petroleum Club, depicts a cross section of the earth with typical oil bearing strata. Brass derrick silhouettes on the ground surface are connected by brass well casing to oil pools below. This work is internationally known among oilmen. Hundreds of her paintings are in private and public collections across the country. She was a member of the American Artist Professional League, Southwest Watercolor Society, Texas Fine Arts and Artists, Craftsmen of Dallas and the Southwest Watercolor Society.
A favorite comment about herself was "Painting is a part of me. It is my life. I feel a closeness to my creator as I try to convey my interpretations of his handiwork."
Mrs. Park and her deceased husband became members of Broadway Baptist Church in the mid 1930s and remained lifelong members. She taught several classes for decades and was always a devoted Christian exemplified in her personal life, gifts of her time, and her financial resources.
She was preceded in death by a grandson several years ago.
Survivors: Sons, David L. Park, Jimmy F. Park and Robert B. Park; three daughters-in-law; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of additional relatives and friends.
