Arvella B. Vowell

SAN ANTONIO -- Arvella B. Vowell, 93, who dedicated her lifetime to the nursing profession she loved, died Monday, July 21, 1997, in San Antonio.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Funeral Home. Officiating: the Rev. Dwayne Willoughby. Burial: Sunset Memorial Park.

Arvella B. Vowell grew up on a Coleman County farm, a middle child in a family of 12 youngsters. She attributed her early interest in nursing to her role as caretaker for younger siblings. Later, as a young widow with two small children to support, she entered nurses' training at Sealy Hospital in Santa Anna, Texas, graduating in 1932. The training program included a stint in San Antonio, to get experience with sick children at the R.B. Green Hospital. This led to her return to San Antonio to practice as a new graduate, bringing her two young children with her. She served as an occupational nurse at Kelly Air Force Base and later as a school health nurse at Trinity University. For many years, Mrs. Vowell practiced private duty nursing, providing individualized care to patients in hospitals and their homes. Physicians often sought her to care for their patients because of her notable nursing care. She struggled, along with her nurse colleagues, to achieve an eight- hour workday for private duty nurses, which was finally accomplished in 1937. Mrs. Vowell was well known in San Antonio for her strong commitment to maintaining the history of nursing and that of the lives, works and struggles of women. She was frequently recognized and honored for this. The San Antonio Women's History Coalition named her as an outstanding contributor to women's history. The "Collection" of nursing history that she initiated and promoted is named in her honor as the "Arvella B. Vowell - District 8, TX Nurses Association History Collection." She was a member of the American Nurses Association for over 50 years and had been named "Nurse of the Year" in 1980. In 1993, the `San Antonio Express-News' named her as a "South Texas Spirit" for her contributions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chalmer Vowell, a daughter, LaVerne V. Alexander, great- granddaughter, Katie Vowell, and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors: Son, Weldon Vowell of Carrabelle, Fla.; brothers, Ralph Bentley of Roseburg, Ore., and Roy Bentley of Hartsfield, Ga.; sister, Laura Smith of Pampa; grandchildren, Carol Cromer of Fort Worth, Mike Vowell and Janice Montalto, both of Carrabelle, Fla., Rick Alexander of Baton Rouge, La., and Kathy Alexander of Fort Worth; great- grandchildren, Kim Tschirhart of Castroville, Ed Everett of Dallas, Michele Montalto and Nicholas Montalto of Boston, Mass., Heather Vowell and Mike Vowell of Dallas, Rebecca Alexander of Fort Worth and Jack Montalto of Carrabelle, Fla.; great-great-grandchildren, Austin Wood of Fort Worth and Ian O'Donnell of Castroville; and many other family members and friends.
