James Leveree Ware
DENISON -- James Leveree Ware, 89, retired from the Texas Department of Highways, died Saturday, July 19, 1997, at a Denison hospital.
Memorial service: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home.
James Ware was born Jan. 30, 1908, near Altus, Okla. He was a descendant of Rowland Ware, an American Revolution veteran, and Hamilton Price Ware, a Civil War veteran. He was an active supporter of the Constitution and was a member of the National Rifle Association.
He was actively involved in farming and ranching until just recently and still held interest in these activities.
Mr. Ware was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Arietta Anderson Ware; parents, James Lee and Sinie Ware; and granddaughter, Gloria Jean Ware.
Survivors: Wife, Louise Ware of Denison; son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. and Gloria Ware of Arlington; granddaughter, Janet Vermillion of Memphis, Tenn.; sister, Ora Jenkins of Littlefield; and several nieces and nephews.

James D. Wilmeth
FORT WORTH -- James D. Wilmeth, 86, a retired Army colonel, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, in Fort Worth.
Funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park.
Col. Wilmeth was born Oct. 30, 1910, in Ballinger. He was a graduate of Fort Worth Central High School, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the University of Texas at Austin. Col. Wilmeth served in World War II in North Africa and in Europe and was also a member of the U.S. Military Mission to Moscow. He also served in Korea and Japan.
He was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal, European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and the Army of Occupation of Japan Medal.
After his retirement from the military, he was a professor of Russian at the University of Texas at Arlington for 17 years and established the Russian Language and Soviet Studies program.
After his retirement from UTA, he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Mr. Wilmeth was a member of Hemphill Presbyterian Church.

TYLER -- Orville E. Ballard, 72, a retired postal carrier, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at a local nursing home.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth.
Orville E. Ballard was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Stephenville.
He was a member of First Pentecostal Church, Masonic Lodge 525 and Moslah Temple Shriners. He was a longtime resident of Fort Worth and moved to Tyler in 1993.
Survivors: Son, Michael Ballard of Tyler; daughter, Carol Ballard; and eight grandchidlren.

KELLER -- Obie Charles Benge, 71, a retired assemblyman for General Motors, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at home.

W.A. "Dub" Carter was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Azle, the son of Atlas and Beatrice Gipson Carter, and was a lifelong resident of Azle. He had been married to Nell Carter for 38 years.
Mr. Carter retired from American Cyanamid after 33 years. He served in the Philippines during World War II and was a member of Azle VFW Post 2137 and Ash Creek Baptist Church of Azle.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy, and a brother, Allen.
Survivors: Wife, Nell B. Carter of Azle; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Billy Johnson of Azle; daughters by previous marriage, Virginia Briedwell, Victoria Lee and Diann Stewart; brother, Jimmie Carter; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Jerry Lynn Chesshir was born Dec. 7, 1941, in Quitaque. He owned Doughnut King in Saginaw and was a former DeSoto resident.

Katherine Cowand was born Nov. 18, 1930, in Megargel, Texas. Mrs. Cowand was the 6th daughter and 7th child of Paul Louie Kreiter and Ida Helen Nulisch Kreiter. She graduated from Forest Avenue High School in Dallas in 1947. A court reporter, she worked for The Honorable Judge John Orvis and The Honorable Judge Cass Dunlap. Mrs. Cowand was a faithful member of the Mansfield Church of Christ. She enjoyed growing flowers, traveling and watching her grandchildren grow.
