Joseph Smith

Elder Smith was born Nov. 2, 1934, in Paris, Texas, the son of Ownsby and Emma Doughty Smith. He grew up in and attended public schools in Paris. He lived several years in Leonard. His early religious training was in the Baptist church. In 1969, he was filled with the Holy Ghost, baptized and added to the church, and in 1971, he was called to the gospel ministry. Elder Smith founded Sunrise Holiness in Bonham in 1979, and later founded and pastored New Beginnings Holiness Church until his death.
He married Joyce Milton on July 8, 1962, and they shared 35 years of life together, as well as a shared Christian ministry until his death.
Elder Smith was a truck driver for Kimbell Foods for several years, and later worked for Green Bay Packaging. He formed his own business, Smith Pallet Manufacturing Co., several years ago.
Survivors: Wife, Joyce Smith of Fort Worth; sons, Joseph Smith Jr. and Ronnie Eugene Smith, both of Fort Worth, Melvin Smith of Sherman, Lonnell Phea of Houston, Joe Ownsby Smith and Larry Smith, both of Bonham, and David Lee Smith of Euless; daughters, Rosie Adams of Sherman, Ira Mae Johnson and Elisabeth Lashan Smith, both of Fort Worth; brothers, James Smith and Willie Lee Smith, both of Fort Worth, Jim Smith of Big Spring; sisters, Gertrude Nettles of Big Spring, Katherine Wetherspoon of Midland, and Rosie Matthews of Fort Worth; 19 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Zelma Tanner was born Feb. 12, 1907, in Chickasha, Okla., and had lived in Handley since 1941. She loved gardening, quiltmaking and crocheting.

BEDFORD -- Edith Lois Hooker Weems, 88, a homemaker and retired retail sales clerk, died Sunday, July 13, 1997, in Bedford.

Edith Weems was born July 14, 1908, in Nashville, Ark.
Her parents were Harvey Lonzo Hooker and Lillie Belle Oakley Hooker. She graduated from Nashville High School in 1927. She taught school in southwest Arkansas for three years.
She married Joseph Dewey Weems of Idabel, Okla., in 1930. Mrs. Weems was a member of Hampton Road Baptist Church in DeSoto at the time of her death. Prior to her move to Texas in 1991, she had lived in Nashville and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Mrs. Weems was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Weems, in 1989.
Survivors: Son, Burt Weems and his wife, Linda, of North Richland Hills; two daughters, Mary Raines and her husband, Harold, of Niceville, Fla., and Linda Cantwell and her husband, Sam, of Fort Worth; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Wattie Donald Hooker and his wife, Willa Mae, of El Dorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
