David K. Rice
David K. Rice, 54, of Dayton was born April 3, 1954 in Baytown and passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009. He was a 1972 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, where he was a National Merit Finalist his senior year and he attended Texas A & M University. He was a member of the Baptist faith and the NRA. He managed the DVA division of National Oilwell/Varcol. An avid hunter, he belonged to several hunting organizations and had been the hunting lease manager for the Northrup/Pipe Creek Ranch for 26 years.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William J. and Nora Rice and Henry C. and Elvina "Belle" Schroeder; brother, Michael Lawrence Rice; and nephew, Donald P. Hamby. He is survived by his wife, Carol S. Rice of Dayton; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Anita Smith of Nixon and Kenny and Krystal Smith of Houston; parents, Gerald L. and Elaine S. Rice of Baytown; sisters, Anne C. Rice of Houston and Elizabeth Rice Davis and husband Ray of Lafitte, LA; grandchildren, Ryan and Kelsey Smith and Kalista and Kloey Smith; nieces & nephews, Rachel A. Davis of Houston, Cara E. Davis of Boulder, CO, Dean M. Davis of Houston, Art B. Davis of Hammond, LA, Autumn Hamby of Houston and Johnny Paul Hamby II of Pasadena; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Polly Hamby and Lyndia and Clint Odom, all of Pasadena; uncle and aunt, Joe and Sue Hardee of Lovelady; and extended family and many, many friends.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Naron officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Creek Cemetery in Houston County near Austonio.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Kenny Smith, Dean M. Davis, David Smith, Ronnie Thomas, Todd Weiner, Marshall Cox and Johnny Paul Hamby II. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Rice, David Macaluso, Carl Gold, Ray Davis, Stuart Perry, Clint Odom, Johnny Hamby and Joe Hardee.

Josephine Ybarra Avalos
Josephine Ybarra Avalos, 93, of Baytown, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. She was a loving mother of 21 children, wife, grandmother and great grandmother. She lived to see five generations of life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Florenzo C Avalos and children, Diane Preston, Jack Avalos, Robert Avalos, Alex Avalos, Johnny Avalos, Ted Avalos and Ramon Avalos.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Eva Carney of Rusk, TX, Patsy and Troy Reagan of Baytown, Janie and Peter Givens of Highlands, Delia and Charlie Barnett of Mansfield, TX, Alice Lizcano of Houston, Lucy and Gene Edwards of Porter, TX, Annie and Bob Hatchet of Vevay, IN, Stella Avalos of Kerrville, TX, Lupe and Lu Seagrace of Arkansas, Rosemary Avalos of Houston, TX, Joe and Linda Avalos of Highlands, TX, Raymond Avalos of Texas City, TX, and Andrew and Billie Aguilar of Baytown; 73 grandchildren, 137 great grandchildren and 49 great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m., at Earthman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at 11 a.m., at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 800 South Main St.; Highlands. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jessie Martines, Oscar Gonzales, Paul Estrada, Brad Cadett, Bryan Adams and Jose Porras.

Claude Herbert “Hub” Bounds
Claude Herbert “Hub” Bounds, 86, of Baytown, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009. He was born Sept. 18, 1922. He was a longtime resident of Baytown. He served in the US Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist’s Mate. After the war, he started work at Humble Oil and retired 28 years later. He was a member of the Exxon Annuitants and a member of the Baptist faith.
He was a very positive and supportive person. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Ellis and her husband Jon of Woodland, WA; grandchildren, Jay Ellis and Lisa Nagel and her husband John and long-time caregiver, Janell Wilson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Earthman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at 10 a.m., in the funeral home chapel. He will be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery.

Jose Guadalupe Ramos
Jose Guadalupe Ramos, 64, of Baytown, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2009, in a Houston hospital, with his loving family at his side, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 12, 1944, in Valle Hermoso, Mexico, son of Joaquin and Maria Reyes Ramos. Mr. Ramos was employed with Zachry Construction Corporation, at the DuPont-LaPorte Facility, where he worked for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Rosa Maria Ramos; daughters, Rosa Nelly Ramos and Marisela Ramos; brothers, Luis Ramos, Juan Ramos, Raul Ramos, and Rodolfo Ramos; sister, Ramona Mireles; one granddaughter, Isabelle Kayleigh Ballard; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends who will miss him.
The family will receive friends at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral home on Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2009, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1124 Beech Street, with Rev. Jesus Guerrero as celebrant. Interment will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.

Lt. Colonel Donald Burke Hicks
Born May 2, 1940 to Afton Burke and Mary Elizabeth “Tunnie” Hicks, Lt Colonel Donald Burke Hicks USAF, ret, died peacefully Jan. 4, 2009 at his home in Schertz, TX.
With him during his sickness and death was his wife of 48 years, Sandra.
Don was raised in Baytown, graduating from Robert E. Lee in 1958, attended Lee College and graduated from Lamar University, Beaumont, TX in 1963. During the early stages of his Air Force career he received his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. For five years he served on the faculty at the USAF Academy in Colorado and later served at Defense Intelligence in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. After a 20 year career in the USAF, Don served for 11 years as the Director of the Computer Center at Trinity University, San Antonio, TX. After retiring once again, he and his wife spent the next 9 years in Christchurch, New Zealand volunteering for prison ministry, church and bible study. He was recently heralded for his volunteer work as Ambassador from the City of Schertz’s Chamber of Commerce.
Don is survived by his wife, Sandra Sherrill Hicks: two sons and their wives Darryl Dwayne and Betty Hicks of Apple Valley, MN, Dustin Sherrill and Airin Hicks of Grapevine, TX, granddaughters, Trinity Michelle, Angelica Winter and Josephine Isabel Hicks. Also, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Judy Hicks of New Braunfels, TX
Don was a true and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend and will be missed by all.
Geronimo Barrientos
Geronimo Barrientos, 31, of Baytown, departed this life early Monday, January 26, 2009, from injury sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico, he was the son of Juan Manuel and Yolanda Ibarra Barrientos. Geronimo was a graduate of Ross S. Sterling High School, and worked as an electrician for J.V. Piping in Texas City, at the Valero Refinery. He is survived by his parents; brother, Juan M. Barrientos and wife, Imelda; sisters, Norma Fuentes, Diana Rosas and husband, Gil, Belinda Morfin and husband, Fernando, Mayra Hernandez and husband, Jaime, and Melissa Flores and husband, Jesse; grandparents, Geronimo and Maria de los Santos Barrientos, and Juan and Concepcion Ibarra; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday January 28, 2009, with rosary at 7 p.m. at the Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home, 6123 Garth Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be noon, Thursday, January 29, 2009, 1124 Beech St., with Rev. Jesus Guerrero officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.

Sandra Ellen Bellmyer, 65 of Baytown, Tx. passed away on January 17, 2009 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital.
She was preceeded in death by her Father, Hiram M. Mott and Grandparents, J.R. and Nannie Davis.

Jack Wallace Gilbert
Jack Wallace Gilbert was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on January 10, 1925.
Jack is survived by his wife, Julie M. Gilbert; sons, David M Gilbert of San Antonio, TX and Reverend Tobert (Chuck) Gilbert of Leenehy, Olkahoma; 5 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.
Jack was a member of and a Past President of the Texas Stamp Dealers Assoc., member of The American Philatelic Society and member of the Texas Postal History Society.
He was an international sales representative for Caterpillar Engine Division, Peoria, IL. Later he was Manager of the Engine Division for Fabick Caterpillar in St. Louis, Mo. He formed Power Associates Intl. with Jim Hodde, Houston, TX.
He donated his body to medical science at the U.T. Medical School.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at Second Baptist Church, 400 E. Wallisville Rd., Highlands, TX on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
Eric Balinski
Eric Balinski, 31, of Crosby, was born July 11, 1977 in Baytown and passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 in Houston.
He was a lifelong resident of Crosby, graduated from Crosby High School in 1995 and worked for his family’s business, Shimek’s Dirt yard, in Crosby.
Eric was a family man, spending all of his spare time to become as close as possible to everyone that was related to him.
He is survived by his wife, April Balinski; son, Cameron Balinski; daughter, Jewel Balinski; parents, Gary and Kerry Michalsky and Stanley Balinski; brother, Cody Michalsky and his wife Heather; sisters, Kacy Browning and her husband Skyler, Melissa Balinski and Paige Balinski; grandparents, Billy and Lucille Shimek, Helena Balinski and Annie Michalsky all of Crosby; in-laws, Sue and David Cameron of League City and Jimmy Johnson of San Marcus, brother-in-law, Andrew Johnson of Taylor and nieces and nephews, Matthew, Landon, Weston and Brooke all of Crosby.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 27, 2009 at the Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Andrew Provazek officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2009 at the funeral home.
