L.A. Turnock Jr.
FORT WORTH -- L.A. "Lew" Turnock, Jr., 77, beloved husband, father and registered professional engineer, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at home among family and friends in Fort Worth.
Funeral: Private.
Memorials: American Cancer Society, Camp Sanguinity (a camp for children stricken with cancer) in care of Cook Children's Medical Center, Office of Development, 801 Seventh Avenue, Fort Worth 76104-2796, or a charity of choice.
L.A. Turnock, Jr. was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Elkart, Ind., but was a Texan by choice since moving to Fort Worth in 1958. He served during World War II as an Army Air Corps aeronautical engineering instructor at Chanute Field, Ill. He also served at Kessler Field in Biloxi, Miss., where he met and married his wife of 55 years, Marian Marie Trochesset. Towards the end of the war he was assigned to the South Pacific.
In 1950, he graduated from Purdue University, obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering and later in Electrical Engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in both Indiana and Texas.
His professional specialties were jet propulsion design and flow mechanics. His career included major contributions to some of the 20th century's most important defense and space exploration projects, including positions as senior design engineer on the Apollo Command and Service and Lunar Landing Modules for North American Aviation in Tulsa, Houston and Cape Canaveral. Among other activities he conducted classes which were attended by such aerospace notables as Wernher Von Braun. He was also a jet propulsion engineer for the B58 Hustler program at Convair Fort Worth, the Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, Redstone and surface-to-air heat seeking missiles.
In later life he worked for the City of Fort Worth Water Department as a water treatment engineer and for the City of Houston Health Department as an environmental engineer.
His principle philosophy on which he based his life can best be summed up by a favorite quote he kept in his personal papers: "God has established natural laws in the universe, and He expects them to operate. He has given you consciences and minds, and He expects you to use them. If you abuse them He will not set His world topsy-turvy in order to rescue you from the consequences of your deeds."
Lew loved dogs, a well-crafted handgun, working on his own automobiles, motorcycles, which he rode until he was 75, and the movie "Lonesome Dove" for its uncomplicated view of life and death. He was a bit of an eccentric, known to file his phonograph albums by publisher and serial number. He played them in the same sequence so they would "all wear out at the same time".
In addition to his many professional honors, in 1987 he received an award for Outstanding Service to the Youth of Tarrant County for tutoring troubled teens in mathematics.
The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care provided by Vitas Home Hospice Care Team Number 4.
He was preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewellyn Turnock of Cincinnatti, Ohio, sister, Mary Lou Greenen of Toledo, Ohio, and great- granddaughter, Rylie Nicole Green of Fort Worth.
Survivors: Wife, Marian; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jeanne Turnock of Baltimore, Md. and Chet and Sue Turnock of Fort Worth; grandchildren, David Green of Fort Worth, Christy Page of Burleson and Jason Turnock of Baltimore, Md.; six great-grandchildren; numerous other family members and his dog, Bunkie.
